Try out, reinstall Sims 3, and start a game in Sunset Valley. Create a homeless looking character. Have to buy a lot, but leave there; and go live in Central Park! Make a living off of fishing out of the ponds and selling them in the grocery store, If I remember correctly.

I did this challenge once years ago, going to $0 by buying hedge plants and removing them. Never thought to use the magic town for the outhouse/sinks/food; I just peed on the ground and went hungry until I could get a phone and order pizza. Two ways to cheese this: you get the full value for items you sell if you sell them before midnight the same day, and the slot machine is a more consistent money maker than the genies. The trick is to buy art you DON'T like and look at it constantly, to bottom out your fun. Using the slot machine with an empty fun meter is a 100% win rate.

It sounded like a given name that an elderly lady might have. Ammonia ended up dying within minutes of the game, then everyone else died shortly after. It was only a few days later that I was taking this exam at school and I was reading through one of the questions, which featured a diagram in which one of the elements was labelled "pad with ammonia" and I was fighting back a few laughs when I saw that as it was then that I realised the error that I made. I still have a good laugh at that memory, it never gets old!

To be fair, I can't recall many people unironically using the term "pull yourself up by your bootstraps." It's more often used by critics. It's similar to how the phrase "trickle-down economics" is rarely used by those identified with the term, much like a socialist isn't likely to describe themselves as advocating a "command economy."
