Okay, okay I know it's late. I had to take a trip to the UK so I'm a week behind. But you can expect the videos to pick up big time very soon. I have a video ready for the second channel so head over and sub with the bell on! The name of the channel is going to change so don't get confused. I'm excited to have two channels going, anything none car-related will be going on the second channel. The machine shop I am using is pretty busy, so I might restore some of the other parts in the meantime to keep the videos coming. Enjoy!
I really admire what you're doing ... keep it up. Of course, for a tough job like this, at some point you're going to need a guy with tattoos to help ...
Hey, Steve! You're living your dream! Life is great--doing what you love in a shop you built from nothing! Your courage and determination is paying off. Sweet! You make us all want to venture out and live our dreams. So glad you can start posting more often. Take care, my friend.
Hey Gary! You just reminded me I need to reply to you! Life is so hectic at the moment, but you're right this is my dream. Thanks for the kind words as always Gary, means a lot.
@john jay only scary if you dont maintain the car properly. If this is scary I wonder what other non scary engine materials you might be thinking of. Are Glock making a plastic one these days?
It kills me inside not uploading. I am now on a mission to get close to posting every day across all of my channels (more channels coming also). Enjoy it King :)
Great job. Some activties require extra hands, glad you got one. The machinery shop does all the cleaning needed, but you helped them thats thoughtful of you. I love BMW's, but i dont own one , one day when i get one, im gonna watch your videos ten times a day. Keep up your good work. You sir ,are an inspiration for many people.
Thank you for such kind words, Shapoor, Its people like yourself that keep me motivated to keep going. Thanks for watching and taking the time to write a comment like this. Means a lot.
Just a tip @10:16, get yourself a power bar to loosen head bolts. A ratchet is not designed to loosen bolts torqued to that spec & will eventually fail. Same for the mains & big ends... It will also reduce the stress on your arms, wrists etc... If there is 1 thing I hate with my mechanical work, its to battle. Good work so far
I have never seen one of these engines that needed rebuilding. Mine has 500,000 miles on it and still runs great. I sold it to a friend that still drivers it regularly. It never had an alternator, Power Steering pump, or Clutch either. Transmission has never been removed from the car. LOL. They last an absolute lifetime.
Since I'm watching your videos I started developing an urge to just follow the same steps you do on my own car... It seems so easy, even though I know it isn't! And the precision and attention to details you have... it is insane :D Can't wait for the next video!
Best channel of TH-cam!! I am a brazilian guy and like so much your videos because you show step by step of the works. And, of course, restore only awesome cars (BMW E30). My english isn't so good, sorry.
Seeing all the parts on the floor at the end and knowing all the goods that are going to happen to them... I cannot wait for part 03 !! Great video, like always !
That also happens when you don't put oil onto the o-rings on the oil filters, but that's mostly on trucks and other big engines. Most people, as you say, uses tools to tighten the oil filters on cars for some reason.
Even with just hand-tightening filters onto these engines, i've found you still need tools to remove- am guessing heat from nearby manifold causes this.
I had the thermostat, timing belts, pulleys and water pump replaced on my E39 520i about 10 years ago for 1000 USD / 800 Pounds including parts and labour. It must have been quite the good price considering how much work it is. Thanks for the video and keep up the great work!
The part you identified as the "Bearing cover" over the oil pump drive gear is actually a plug for the hole the distributor occupied on engines before Motronic controls that started with the E30.
Loved watching this! I have an E30 (in the picture) and someone is keeping my old knackered M20 engine block so one day I'd love to restore it and the rest of the engine. Your video makes that more realistic!
I rebuilt a Chevrolet Truck engine once, with my bother-in-law. When we put it back together, there were two bolts left over that we couldn't account for where they went. It drove us crazy. The engine ran fine and we tossed them into a jar hoping we'd figure it out later. When I sold the truck a few years later, I passed along the two bolts with it.
Engines are definitely more complicated than the carburettor ones I last worked on, massive improvement in power and emissions though with turbocharger and EFI etc. Love the engineering of any engine though. Thanks for sharing and best regards from a warm Uak
Love it Steve! the montage at the end was like the exploded view diagrams in the very old Haynes Manuals I used to read as a child. You know, the ones with the drawings rather than the photos. Can't wait to see you getting through it. It will be like new when finished. You might as well knock out the frost plugs and replace them while you're at it mate.
An extremely easy tear down. I was surprised that you didn't break any bolts. Looks like you need some tools you don't have. I would recommend a set of "lady slippers". It's amazing how they're put together on an assembly line.
Lots more to come exciting, not looking forward to my next tear down i don't have spare garage space so turns into chaos. Also don't forget to do "Core plugs" on block for some reason i noticed heaps of BMW engine rebuilds miss them and good way to check outside of cylinder walls. Also please try make it higher compression if running NA for little more fun, once its apart there is only minor difference in cost
When putting back your conrods, you could cover the big ends with plastic or rubber. That way you won’t scratch up your freshly ground wall and/or crank.
Its kind of convenient for someone to take apart an engine so you can see how they work and stuff, but you miss out on getting dirty and stuff too, which is mainly the best part
Wow, all the bearings have almost no wear. I can't even believe it. With how dark that engine looks I figured they'd be trashed. Btw, never store a crank shaft horizontally--could introduce warp. Machine shops always store them standing.
Insanity alert! Having no sleep can spell disaster you need to plan carefull moves or else something would break like doing a restoration of a engine if you are so drowsy and made one false move then you know what happens next so please think and I know it's a humorous joke but I think it's not funny to me
19:20 - Wow, such a simple engine! You don't see that with more modern cars. THOUSANDS of components in them, with emissions control devices and sensors up the wazoo. Good luck with the restoration. Hope it's going well. :)
12:10 probably a oil pressure valve, when the pressurised oil circuit runs all the way through the system and reaches the end of the pressurised side, there's a restrictor which maintains a set oil pressure. It's like taking a water hose and pressing the end together to increase pressure.
Love these videos! I'm not much on foreign engines (I'm in America), but I think that bit you said might be an oil filter is an oil pressure sending unit. It's what sends info to the computer that sends info to the gauges on dashboard. But I could be wrong! :) Keep up the fine satisfying work!
Check that the idle valve elbow on the throttle body isn’t leaking. The factory epoxy cracks and it loosens up. I would heat it up, pull it out and re-epoxy just to be sure. Otherwise you’ll never have a good idle
Awesome video.. a suggestion if you don't mind.. dont use the ratchet too often when loosening bolts. I always use a breaker bar followed by the ratchet handle. So far, my ratchet handle has lasted almost 20 years.. other than that, you're doing a pretty good job.

What is your second channel?
@@maxhilton6819 Steve,s Workshop.Go to the restoreit home area and there is a heading 'channels' click on that and it is listed. no content yet

I had a question; way are you now restoring this bmw instead of your other bmw?
Crankshaft bolt 30NM, oil filter 160NM.
Whoever serviced this engine was a genius.
Oil filters are quite often hard to remove despite being tightened by hand at the service.
Seems perfectly normal to me.
Can't wait for part 3.

Anyone else love the satisfying sound of a bolt being broke loose after being tightly threaded for 10 years or more... just me ok
The simplicity of this engine is unique. It is a pity that there will no longer be such motor constructions.
Couldn't agree more.
Agree. Now you plenty of plastic parts even inside the engine!
@john jay only scary if you dont maintain the car properly. If this is scary I wonder what other non scary engine materials you might be thinking of. Are Glock making a plastic one these days?
Im glad you are sending the Block and Head out for professional cleaning and machining.
Looking at you doing this makes me want to pull apart the one I have in my garage...

My thoughts exactly. Almost fell off my chair when i saw that. Then the hammer on the harmonic balancer made me cringe a bit
Just disassembled an M20 for the first time- they are nice engines.
Love this M20 engine, i have 2 of them 1 boosted 450 HP and 1 natural aspirated, never had problem, love IT

yesssss i've found you recently and I bing watched your previous videos . i'm already in love with the series . cant wait to see the final product
