- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 11 พ.ค. 2024
- In the last year, I meticulously disassembled, cleaned, and diagnosed the classic BMW R60/5 airhead engine from a 1970s motorcycle, embarking on a journey to restore it to its former brilliance.
Throughout the process, I repaired numerous internal components, ensuring their optimal condition for seamless reassembly.
Given the odometer reading of well over 90'000 miles on the original engine, an extensive rebuild became a necessity to revive this vintage masterpiece.
Join me in the fascinating restoration of this iconic motorcycle, where every part tells a story of its enduring legacy on the road.

Y ese motor, para que sirve y cómo funciona?
The print shows the cylinders staggered, Great job.
This engine features staggered cylinders and the blueprint highlights it well. The blueprint is a factory drawing from 1968 and it showcases an R75 which is a 750cc engine.
Thanks for your feedback!😃👍🏼
Those WW2 engineers really carried BMW into the 90's. That engine is beautiful and you can see the quality.
You are right! They left behind some great technology and great manufacturing methods.
There were numerous changes that took place between ~1960’s and 1995. I will share more details in an upcoming video series😃👍🏼 Regards Andreas
Parabéns pelo vídeo.
Amei 🤩.
Thank you😊
As a retired Dealership Harley-Davidson mechanic (not a damn technician) with over 55 years of service and repair under my belt it is wonderful to see young people doing work with the attention to detail as I have seen you preform on this engine. Nicely done. I wish there were more young people such as yourself in the shops in my years. With work ethic such as yours I know you enjoy doing it for year to come. I hope only the very best for you. God bless, Most Sincerely, Pops
Im doing all my engine work, slow and thoroughly, but the maddafackas bossing around with me hates it, ive never got a complaint from any customer yet though 😊.
I love doing my absolute best, every time and i take pride in learning from the elderly (or youngsters) who is proud, quality minded mechanics that do their best eeeeevery time doing engine work.
It is the absolute best feeling, to deliver a piece of work, that you just know, wil last a very long time and perform the same or even better than a new engine if taken care of proper.
@@user-wz8gm5rk9uIgnore that idiot of a boss, he is only focused on money. Your approach is the correct one, which will reward you handsomely during your career.
Job satisfaction is even more important than money.
Agree with people doing things the right way. Those engines last forever. There was one BMW motorcycle in Colorad with over 750,000 miles. That was back in the 80s.
I've always thought that these are some of the most beautiful engines of any kind and I'm not even a bike rider. Just gorgeous!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I fully agree with you on this...there is just something that makes these engine so beautiful. The castings, maybe the boxer layout, the simplistic appearance...it's hard to say! Thanks for tuning in to watch this video and leaving a comment. Regards Andreas
@WorkshopRebuild. where are you located?
That was absolutely meticulous……… well done Sir….
Thank you for your kind words, it's much appreciated! Regards Andreas
Beautiful..... It's like watching an artist creating a masterpiece. Therapeutic..... Precision Meticulous.
More videos please.👍🏻
Thank you for this comment! I’m glad you enjoyed it and I will definitely continue to share more videos like this in the near future.
Regards Andreas😃
One of the best engines ever made. Also it's very beautiful!
I can agree with you on that! Thanks for your support!😃🤟🏻
Regards Andreas
German over engineering with so many seals and precision fits. I rather look at US engines…
@@ArneChristianRosenfeldtNope, simple, and really reliable. I owned 3, plus 3 Harley's.
Smooth quietly better than Harley Davidson.
@@ArneChristianRosenfeldtoversure overprotective theirs attitude.
Looks like all the parts were 100% new ones 😎
Many parts needed to be replaced after 50years of use, and that’s why many parts look new. Major components were refurbished/repaired in order to be able to reuse them for this engine build.
I will have a few more videos about this engine where you will see what exactly went into this engine.
Thanks for watching! Regards Andreas
You had my full attention for the full 30 minutes! What an absolute masterpiece you put together and the way you kept everything so clean was incredible. I love watching your videos!! Can't wait to see the next one
Thank for sticking around until the end Matthew! I will continue to share more videos about this engine and other aspects of the BMW motorcycle build. Thanks again and see ya soon
Double row timing chain with a master link is so vintage German style.
The engine models from the late 60’s featured timing gears and just a few years after this engine, they went away from a double row timing chain and installed a single row timing chain.
It’s always interesting to see how slight improvements were made over the years. Some which were better than others😉
Thank you for your comment! Regards Andreas
@@WorkshopRebuild Single row timing chain and black airfilterbox from MY82. Up to MY82 there has been a double row chain in all engines exept the R45/R65 and the round alu-cased airfilter. In the 1000cc with 24 holes in the box, that's the best sound ever. I ride a '79 R100RT...
BMW had designed an excellent engine, and you did colossal work when you were restoring it.
I fully agree with you! Thank you for your kind words and thanks for leaving a comment! Regards Andreas
An excellent job, thank you! It's a refreshing change to see every screw being installed without the aid of some sort of power tool or other.
I appreciate your kind words greatly! I rarely use an impact gun, and when I do, it's solely for nuts and bolts measuring 3/4 inches (19mm) and larger. This engine contains numerous M6 and M8 bolts that directly thread into aluminum. I prefer not to risk using an impact gun on them, as stripping the threads could lead to a challenging day, to say the least! Thanks once more!
Regards Andreas
VW divided by two.
Seriously, a thoughtfully designed engine.
Thanks for the great video!
That’s pretty much how you can look at this engine😁👍🏻
I agree this engine was very well designed on the inside and the engineers somehow made it look simplistic on the outside.
Thank YOU for tuning in to watch this video and leaving a great comment! Cheers - Andreas
...or the 911 x 3 - pushrods 🏍
Nice to see someone who knows how to use a torque wrench!
Thanks a lot! Regards Andreas
I especially like how you showcase that an engine is a precision machine. Strength does not equal a lack of finesse.
Thanks a lot Mariano! Despite the overall simplicity of this engine, the internals are a work of art. There are many parts that need attention and I did my best to showcase this in the video. Thanks for mentioning this and leaving a comment! Regards Andreas
Such elegance at work! I've had 6 airheads over 40 years, including two R65's. Definitely something to appreciate from a better understanding! Thank you
Thank you for watching and leaving a comment! You have had quite the collection over the years and the R65's already featured a few upgrades from the early 70's model Airheads.
Since you had two R65's, were they your favourite bikes?
Regards Andreas
@@WorkshopRebuild The R65s were very good smaller bikes and among my favorites. R100GS was a great bike too. Now ride R9T Urban GS, which is very good.
This video that you made is very well done and real credit to you.
That is a beautiful piece of machinery! Great work on the rebuild, nice clean shop, stand, and tools. I would love to have a job like that. I have been a small engine mechanic for over 40 years, and I loved working on bike engines. I was recently forced into retirement due to health issues, but I still work on stuff on the side when I can.
Thank you for a great video.
Well done, Andreas, I like your attention to detail, from, “what looks the vapor blasting of each piece”, and finished with what I am guessing is a Cerakote, to your “special” assembly tools, the initial assembly lubrication and temporary plugs, all these are signs of a good artisan.
Given the age of the motor, I am amazed at the perfect condition of the thread on the aluminum head exhaust port.
My 2c, as a firm believer in “copper slip grease”, I used to use that on the aluminum exhaust nut to aluminum head thread, as well as on the spark plug thread.
Your comment means a lot to me and it also keeps me going! You mentioned every step from the preparation to the final result, which means you have been watching many videos. Thank you for your support!!
The cylinder head threads were not reconditioned whatsoever, just cleaned and prepped for the coating. I was actually impressed by the condition, because many airhead owners have to build them up with weld and recut them!
I fully agree with you about copper slip grease (copper coating). This should be applied to all fasteners along the exhaust system, including the exhaust nuts. I will be doing this once I install a brand new exhaust system to this bike.
Have a fantastic day and I hope to see you in 2024. All the best - Regards Andreas
Ok Andreas, what an awesome assembly! I can't believe how detailed and dialed in you have that system! Well done I watched the entire thing with a look of awe on my face! Happy New year and great success to you in the future!
I’m glad you enjoyed this detailed engine assembly video, David! Thank you for watching until the end and I hope you liked the final results😊
On the same note, I want to wish you a Happy New Year and all the best in 2024.
I will continue to support your channel and want to see you grow as a creator! Keep it up buddy😎🤙🏽
Beautiful machine. I would love to have one just the set on my coffee table and to take apart and reassemble.
Thank you for your positive thoughts! A kit engine would be very cool, but to take one of these apart, many specialty tools are needed and therefore it‘s not very straightforward.
If it were just some office art, that would be just fine and that‘s actually a cool idea.
Maybe something I should look into😃
Let me know if you‘d be interested in that. Regards Andreas
I don't know which is better quality the video itself or the assembly of the engine !
Thank you so much, I appreciate your comment! I believe this is still up for debate😃👍🏼
After serious consideration, I'll go for the assembly. But it's a close call.
This is mechanical love. Beautiful work brother!
Thanks a lot man! I appreciate your support!! Regards Andreas
Has to be the cleanest engine build ever shown. Great job!
Die Wunder der deutschen Mechanik. Sehr schöne Arbeit, wirklich großartig. Gut gemacht.👍👏
Du hast völlig Recht! Danke für deine Worte😊👍🏼👍🏼 -Andreas
The older technology reminded me of rebuilding Nortons. I wish I had that nice fixture then!. Very nicely done. Everything clean and meticulous.
Oh yes, the old Nortons are wonderful machines! This fixture is completely custom made, but it did take some time to make. It will definitely come in handy for future projects😎👍🏼
Thank you for watching and leaving such a great comment. Regards Andreas
What a immensely satisfying conclusion to this wonderful engine project!
Thank you very much for your overly positive comment! I had a great time rebuilding this engine. Thank you for tuning in to watch this video😊👍🏽
Amazingly well done, so detailed. I will reference this often when I finally get around to putting my engine back together!!
Thank you so much, Chris! In a week I will have a detailed engine assembly video with timestamps, which might help you even more.
I will focus on separate parts and share a detailed view on everything.
Cheers😊👍🏽
This is gold! I would add torque specs - tool naming - and do's and dont's of steps. Amazing work!
Thank you for your comment, it‘s much appreciated!
I‘ve created a separate assembly video that focuses on the „How-To“ part of this BMW Airhead engine assembly. In that video, I also highlight the torque specs and everything needed to assemble this engine…let‘s just it‘s the nerdy version of this video😁👍🏻
Regards Andreas
I always wanted one of these bikes back in the day. I always thought it was so modern looking.
It’s never too late to get into this hobby😊👍🏼
Super cool to see this engine come together.
Thank you Jeff! It finally happened haha...as you know I ran into some issues, but maybe it's better that it took a little bit longer (who knows). Hopefully you can take something away from this video or from the upcoming "detailed" engine assembly video. Thanks for tuning in and all the best in 2024 for you. Regards Andreas
una verdadera joya el montaje y la pulcritud. Felicidades. Excelente trabajo.
Thank you very much!! Regards Andreas
У вас золотые руки. Я впечатлен!
Thank you very much!😊👍🏼
Beautiful job! At 9'40, I'm sure to see the blind plug in the oil canal between front and rear main bearing. If it is not here, you'll don't have oil pressure. 😉
Thank you very much! Don’t worry, the original flat-head oil plug screw has been replaced with a black oxide set screw. You can see it in place around minute 7:50!
Thank you for your concerns😊👍🏼👍🏼 Regards Andreas
Brilliant, long time since i worked o an bmw boxer engine, dont have the time to do so much like that nowadays, good to see it done nice and thorough.
Thank you very much! Engine rebuilds do take time especially if you want to do as much as you can by yourself and it's never a good idea to rush anything either. I'm glad I was able to share this assembly with you and thank you for tuning int. Regards Andreas
I looove your work, they are so thoroughly executed 😊❤
Thank you!😃👍🏼
I'm happy that this engine assembly video brought back memories of your beloved R75/5 from back in the day. It would be great to hear some stories from you and your trips!
Thank you for sharing your kind words, it means a lot to me. This work brings me joy and it will be a special bike once it's completed. More videos are coming soon and hopefully the end is near.
Greetings from 🇨🇦 Regards Andreas😃👍🏼
In the nineties I was team leader of the Police motorcycle team in Amsterdam. We had 35 solo motorcycles and 23 sidecar motorcycles. All R60/5. Lateron the K75 and sidecars from EML with R75/5. And in 1969 I learned to ride a motorcycle with the police with the R50, which at the time also had a sidecar. Great things to transport the detainees with their heads down in the sidecar during the student riots at that time.
Wow, what a story! Thank you for sharing this in the comment section, Sir!😃👍🏼
Besides the Police team, did you own a personal BMW Airhead or possibly a K-Bike?
Regards Andreas
@@WorkshopRebuild I have owned a K100RS twice myself. Lots of vibrations in the 4 cylinders. Oil consumption. I enjoyed the Honda VFR and the KAWA ZZR 600/1100 more. Later we had the K75 at the Amsterdam police. Less vibrations. Great for surveillance tasks. Never any problems. Nickname of the BMW Boxers; Warthog.
hahaha
Did you own the one of the early K100RS bikes with 2-Valves per cylinder?
Very interesting bikes, unfortunately I‘ve never been on one of them before. The K75 doesn‘t get as much love as it should, because everyone is automatically drawn towards the 1000cc engines…maybe that will change as time passes☺️
Thanks for sharing!
Was always fascinated by the look of these engines
They sure are built very well and they look so simplistic! Thanks for leaving a comment. Regards Andreas
Marvellous!
Pls make sure you have used Copper grease on the exhaust manifolds It makes it so much easier when you take them off I know this has been mentioned previously but it makes a ghastly job in the future absolutely easy later on
Thank you very much! Great advice here and definitely worth pointing out for other BMW collectors.
I will be using copper grease on the exhaust threads once the new headers go onto the bike.
Regards Andreas
This engine assembly is a true work of art! The precision and craftsmanship on display here are reminiscent of a fine painting, each component meticulously placed to create a masterpiece of functionality. I will be watching this more than once. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for being active right at the launch of the video and I'm pleased to hear that you enjoyed it. It's been a great journey to assemble this engine and it's finally finished! More videos are coming soon. Regards Andreas
Stellar work on that engine 🤜🏻 this will be so amazing to see the bike running again Happy New Year Andreas!! 🎉
Thanks a lot!!!🤛🏼 (fist bump back)
I’ve got a large order of parts that just came through the door and I’ll be able to mount more parts onto the frame. I’ve got a lot of content planned for the new year😃
Happy New Year Year to you too!! Thanks for your ongoing support, it means a lot to me😊👍🏽
what a wonderful syphony of parts, knowlage, perfection. it really was like watching a flower develop to perfection and beauty, more then nice work.
That is some overly positive feedback and I truly appreciate it! Thank you for watching this engine assembly develop from start to finish. Regards Andreas
Point ignition... a purist! Also, props for someone using a torque wrench correctly. No 2x,3x, bounce after values have been reached! Great stuff here.
Thank you for you overly positive comment! I was taught to never double torque a fastener and that‘s why I never do it. It‘s also a good thing to keep important measuring tools and torque wrenches calibrated for accurate measurements and values.
Thanks again! Regards Andreas
I've never seen a motorcycle engine with a brushed alternator before. I would imagine it has a very robust charging system. Outstanding work on the build!
The alternator is quite robust and it feeds enough power back into the system. If one would want more lights or go above and beyond the original setup, then it’s well worth upgrading the alternator.
In my case everything will stay original as I’m aiming for an original restoration.
Thank you for your kind words! Regards Andreas
Thank you, how nice to watch, I thought the cut of the rings should be installed at 120º from eachoder
thank you for your feedback! the piston rings were installed 120º apart from each other, but necessarily shown in detail in this video. I have a full engine rebuild video about this engine, which shows every step of the assembly.
Fun fact: Piston rings rotate on pistons and within the cylinder bores. Even when installed 120º apart from each other there is no control over the ring gaps after that. It's very possible they line up after every now once the engine is running.
I have a 2003 airhead R1150 RT and I love it. It was a little getting used to after going with my V-Twin Harley that I came from. It's been very dependable and I've learned how to do all of the work myself well most of it anyway.
That’s such a cool bike with some great features, especially since it’s an RT!
It’s a really good thing to be able to wrench on your own bike, you never know what will happen on a road trip😉
I hope your R1150 serves you well for many more years😊👍🏼 Regards Andreas
Bu işi çok iyi yapıyor.

A very nice build. My OCD loved it especially. All the parts lined up very logically and in their place 🙂.
I appreciate your comment and I’m glad you enjoyed the way the parts were laid out.
Regards Andreas
That’s a lot of care assembling an engine with an aluminum crankcase so porous that its bottom always has oil on it - seeped right through the metal casting itself. I used to own a 1969 airhead and I was amazed that the metal quality of the crankcase could be so bad. The drive shaft housing was the same. Nice set of special tools used!
I heard about this issue with the early models from 69/70. Most engine castings would leak around the engine mounting stud bores.
They quickly made changes to the 70/71 model engines to improve the castings.
I haven’t heard of issues with the swing arm nor the final drive. Maybe it was just the gasket that was placed between these two parts.
Thanks for sharing your experience and leaving a comment! Regards Andreas

wow german and usa is so amazing sir
Thanks a lot! This engine was designed and built very well by the Germans and I had a fun time rebuilding it😃🤙🏼 Cheers
Took me back a long way. I never worked on that part of my R65. I put 200,000 miles on it and sold it. They say you can't wear a BMW out, but mine was wore down to the nub. But I took the engine for granted. Never had any problems but for the rocker arm assemblies wearing out. And I worked on it a lot. Clutch cables, brakes, forks, alternator problems, throttle gears, fairing mount welds cracking and those back sub frame welds cracking. Always cleaning those Bing carbs. But I guess they're one fine motorcycle all considered.
It sounds like you had quite the journey with your R65! Putting 200,000 miles on a motorcycle is a testament to both the rider's dedication and the machine's durability. Despite the wear and tear you encountered, it's impressive that the engine remained steadfast. Your experience highlights the maintenance and care required to keep a motorcycle running smoothly over the years. It seems like you've had your fair share of adventures and challenges with it, but as you mentioned, BMWs are renowned for their resilience. Thank you for sharing your story! Regards Andreas
To be truthful, the 200,000 miles is just a close estimate. The odometer stopped working at 31,000 or so miles. But I knew how many miles I had to buy a new rear tire, seems like it was close to 10,000 miles thoroughly worn out. I kept the old tires in a stack in the corner of my shed and when I finally sold the bike and hauled them off, it was close to a pickup load. The mufflers like to rot out on them too. Not inexpensive to operate. Seems like 45 mpg was about as good as I could get driving like grandma. The full fairing was probably responsible for the gas guzzling. In summer, feet get uncomfortably hot on long rides. If caught in the rain, the fairing would keep you dry with the right posture as long as you could keep moving. Boots would fill with water however. Hydroplaning would scare you into a coma. Once you get familiar with them, they're really simple to work on. But if you use one to commute, plan on working on it. Yourself. Unless you're rich. @@WorkshopRebuild

Weiter so.
Gruss Andreas
