    I'm on about my 5th viewing of this video. I bought a '98 DS that runs good, but has had no service in about 20 years! I wanted to tune it up before we take it an hour away to the camp ground. New lights, oil change, new air filter, new gas lines & filters. Fuel does not seem to pump well (new filters just barely fill), although it runs. Going to do the fuel pump next. Might just do the belts too while I'm at it. Thanks so much. I've never done much work like this so this has been a great little project!!!

      Club Car fuel pumps don't move a lot of fuel when they are cranking. They really start to have fuel flow at higher RPMs so the fuel filters not filling is normal. There are times when the filters will look completely dry but it still runs. If its been that long since its been maintained, I would still change the pump. They are not that expensive.

    How does that fuel pump run? What is the 3rd hose do? Is it run by oil pressure? I didn't see any wires so it's not electric but I also dont see a return line if it run by oil. New to carts. I have a 2008 club car ds would love to know what problems I should look for on this model. She runs great right now.

    Kevin, another great video. I have a 1999 club car with hydraulic valves. New carburetor and pump. Compression 110. The issue that I am having cart starts only runs short distance and bogs down like it’s running out of gas. When I crack the air box open slightly it runs great. I completely checked for any blockage from choke button to the carburetor and there were none. Can you please steer me in the right direction? Thanks Larry

      If its the vertical engine, there is a service mode switch somewhere under the seat. it should be on driver's side. If its the OHV engine, pull the yellow knob out on the back side of the forward/reverse lever and rotate it 180 degrees. This will put it in service mode.

    Another great video Kevin, thanks. I just completed a tune-up on my dad's cart. While he was using it though, it quit on him. Turns out a push rod came off it's rocker arm. I put it back in place and it started ok, but I'm concerned something serious caused it to come off. Any thoughts if just doing a valve adjustment will be good enough, or if I should look at something else? I agree with the other comments, audio sounds great.

    • @Kevinsgolfcarts
      @Kevinsgolfcarts  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check valve lash for sure. Its possible the rod is bent slightly and causing it to jump off.

  • @jws3925

    You did not show adjusting the air/fuel jet that you ran in until it bottomed. You stated you would do so on the cart when running. My understanding of this jet is that it is an idle/low speed jet (service manual referred to it as a pilot jet). How do you adjust this since the cart really doesn't idle per se? The manual has this jet turned out one turn. I'd just like to know how to set it when the cart is running. I work on lawn mowers so this type of thing is very common for me but, as I said, these carts don't really idle so I am kind of at a loss. Any suggestions? Love your videos and they have been a tremendous help. Thank you.

    What should the gap be on the new spark plug?

  • @mm-jx7gf
    @mm-jx7gf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the video. Question: is there any maintenance to the ignition system such as changing the spark plug wire, etc. Is there a distributor on these engines with a cap and points, etc..? Or do these have some type of solid state distributor..? I see these use a drive belt which you changed and i suppose a clutch assembly. Is there any actual transmission that needs service such as fluid changes..?? In other words how does the drive axle get power...? Comment: I would probably change that oil drain plug washer occasionally as it looks like a crush washer. Also the gap on the spark plug is .030 or anywhere between .028 and .032. And I think the crankcase holds a maximum of 1.2 qts of oil. But I just assume 1 qt. so as not to overfill as you mention. With a new filter it may be slightly more... But best to fill gradually and recheck...

    • @Kevinsgolfcarts
      @Kevinsgolfcarts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I'm aware, Club Car, EZGO and Yamaha have been electronic or magneto ignition since the beginning. There's no distributor system. Columbia-Harly Davidson had a points and condenser system. Others may have as well but I'm not aware. The drivetrain on gas carts is a CVT, continuously variable transmission. Similar to how some ATVs and snowmobiles work. Yamaha has grease zerks on their older G series carts. The newer Drive and Drive2 clutches don't have this provision. The rear differential is known as a transaxle. It has the forward and reverse gearing. Older Yamaha and EZGOs do not have forward or reverse in the transaxle as these carts use a standard differential and the 2-cycle engine rotates in both directions. Both systems, the standard rear and transaxle get their power through the drive belt. Fluid should be changed, but fluid and interval varies depending on year, make and model. Oil drain plug washers are changed out if damaged, worn or every 3-5 oil changes. As for oil capacity, this engine is a Kawasaki FE290. It gets about 1.4 quarts. After the oil filter is primed, it sits right at full. I've been doing this long enough that I know when its just right.

    I have a similar cart (club car ds gas), it runs good for a while (maybe an hr.) and then will suddenly just crank, but engine won’t fire. After I leave it for a few hours it will run good again, meaning I can drive it with no issues. I’ve cleaned the carb and changed the spark plug, also tried jumping solenoid like you did in one of your videos, but that doesn’t get it to fire so don’t think it’s the solenoid. Any suggestions?

    • @Kevinsgolfcarts
      @Kevinsgolfcarts  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ignition coil and/or igniter is failing. Depending on the year, the coil and igniter are all-in-one or separate components. If they are separate, I would change them both. If they are all-in-one, then its only one component that needs to be changed. The ignition coil is located under the blower housing. The easiest way to remove it is to unbolt the engine from the frame so you can access the blower housing bolts on the bottom side of the engine.

      Kevin's Golf Carts - I think I may have the same issue. I’ll be driving along, and suddenly my engine will bog down to almost a stop, and then it will rev back up and I’ll blow heavy dark smoke, but start moving again. Then in about 50 feet, it will do it all over. I just bought a new carb and fuel pump. Already had the oil changed and a new oil and air filter. Once I get the new fuel pump and carb in place, if I’m still having the issue, I’ll move to ignition coil.

    • @love2beachbum
      @love2beachbum 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I work on boats. We call those transfer pumps. You can buy cheap hand pumps, we use them to pull oil out of Hard to drain oil situations when doing a oil change. They work for just about any kind of a job like draining anything. You might want to check that out. You will find that pump very helpful in many situations.

    I just picked up an 02 DS, have a new battery and new solenoid and when I peddle it in neutral the starter generator turns but not full speed and slows way down on compensation stroke every time and keeps doing so. The brushes are even with the guide when I open covers, should I replace the brushes before I replace the starter generator? I didn’t find any lose or corroded wires

    • @Kevinsgolfcarts
      @Kevinsgolfcarts  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. Try new brushes first. Though, if you are in neutral and not in Service mode, the engine should not crank at all, only in forward or reverse. If you are in service mode, then it should crank and run.
