I feel ya! My Dad was a career military man. 30 years in the Army deployed all over the world. He hardly noticed that we existed (or so it seemed most of the time). Even after I joined the Army myself we had little to do with each other. Today we are both retired. I moved to Texas 23 years ago after a big blow up fight with him. He did come to Texas for my wedding 11 years ago though. A couple years ago I went to Kentucky to take him on a fishing trip, and he kinda just blew that off. Last week, I drove up again to pick up an old RV that he decided to give me about 5 years ago. Just like Derek does give her a good once over, change or top off some fluids, air up the tires and hope for the best! 1800 mile round trip with my son in law! A trip he'll never forget! As always love your channel.
Watching has been inspiring for me. I have a 1968 Chevelle I bought and started to restore. After 4 years of work and the tons of issues you discover on the way, I stopped working on her and she sat for a year. Watched several of these videos and seeing Derek make vehicles run and drive, I decided if he can get these forgotten vehicles going, then I can get this Chevelle drivable. After a long 6 months of none stop wrenching I took her out on her first voyage and Fathers day car show with my dad. She looks like she belongs on a Road Kill episode and still working out issues. Just want to thank you for the videos of inspiration.
Brings back memories of my grandfather driving me around in his 1972 Scout II. I need to get it roadworthy, it has a brake leak and a radiator leak. Last time I toyed with it, I couldn't find where the brakes were leaking from but I'll give it another shot when I get the time. Perhaps I'll make a video out of it. It's been sitting since 2013 and the thing really is as mint as can be, not a spot of rust, no dents at all. Update: I replaced the rear brake hose, and the radiator. The new rad is slightly taller than the original, so I need to make a bracket for the fan shroud, then it’ll be ready to go. Really excited to drive it again.

The smiles you gave each other shows the love between you and the memories will be eternal!! It’s crazy how time seems to go slow when they are little but it goes by so fast, it’s great seeing you spend that time with your kids and I can guarantee when they have kids of their own they will talk fondly of the road trips with you.
As a former Scout II owner watch out for the upper tailgate hinges. They tend to tear out. Also, the body rarely gets hail damage as it's extra thick steel. They only had about 15 or 20 different key sets. Also, the drag link tends to get loose so your front end drifts a lot. I've known several teetotaler owners who got pulled over for suspected drunk driving.
We had a 78 Scout Traveler and it was the absolute worst handling vehicle I've ever drove. I don't miss that thing at all, but it was nice to take a trip down memory lane watching this video.

Have you thought of fibreglassing the rotten underside of these vehicles? You get structure and salt resistance in one. Or a few layers of mesh and bedliner, for a quick patch. And polycarbonate for window replacement as you can cut onsite with a saw or grinder. And stronger than the glass. And fill the rust pockets with spray foam so more mud and moisture can't get in there again. The rocker I would slide a aluminium pipe in and fibreglass it in. All dodgy but gets it done fast.
A guy really likes the wooshy zoom footage driving back home; but, you know what would make it cooler? One of them Oraygon Trail mapilators showing that there progress.

Almost the same here. but for the last 12 years, I have been talking to my dad everyday for hours per day and we have been catching up , he's 77 and I'm 55 . I feel you sir! it is never to late , It does bring a tear to my eye , but it is better than nothing , and some never get what we even have . You sir , keep on trucking.
I'm lucky my dad and I were like two peas in a pod. Same sense of humor. Pretty much the same person just 18 years apart
Break the mold and scatter the pieces! I include my kids and my grand kids and they love to include me!
The Father and Son moment part way through the trip was heartwarming and priceless.
My heart almost burst when you and your son gave each other that Smile, the one that speaks of all the love you have for each other. Your son is very blessed to have a Dad such as yourself that loves him that much and you are blessed to have a son that loves you equally. Not everyone has that. God bless you and your family Sir. John here, from the back-roads of Tennessee. :)>
1:03:11 ... Yeah, ya got a 60 y.o. man here wonderin' who's cuttin' onions.
Did a couple of road trips with my son when he was 10-12 years old. A little camping, a little fishing and lots of bonding. He calls me everyday…..he’s 35! Keep it up Derek.
I'm one of those kids who would would have loved this lifestyle my dad's brothers were identical to this and it didn't catch with my dad but once in a while I would sneak into the garage and get cut up on sharp exposed metal and 2 years ago that car that cut me to pecies in my hands and knees as a 5 year old was almost mint after a 6 year restoration in a local show and shine 3 decades later was a feeling that I won't ever forget even though I wasn't ever invited to be involved with them
Yep also gave a fella the warm and fuzzies like a big slug of black velvets
Hearty agreement
I nearly busted a gut at hearing Leaning on the Everlasting Arms playing after saying it had no oil pressure but you didn't hear any knocking on heaven's door. Talk about the humor on display.
My father died when I was three. I always had a hard time growing up on father's day watching other kids do stuff with their dads. Time with dad matters. Good on you Derrick.
Making dad & son Summer memories for a lifetime. That’s priceless
Being a single dad, it makes me smile to see you sharing your time with your boys. Taking my son on a 3 hr road trip to go watch some drag racing in the morning. Also I remember as boy myself, my father was a mobile service mechanic, and it was the biggest joy when he would ask me to jump in the service truck with him to go fix a grader or snow plow some where. You keep on being you sir, thank you.
Awesome- memories are everything
@@ViceGripGarage Its obvious you live that statement Derek. Your kids one day will be talking about you the way you talk about your grandpa. You are a great entertainer, but more importantly a great family man. Thank you for bringing that into so many lives on TH-cam.
I go through these phases where I watch your videos for hours and hours. I love watching you and your family do this together. I’m glad you all have love in your life and that you seem to have a good time doing all of this. Keep it up!
Lovely
That phase just hit me again this evening lol Watchin old episodes again that i haven't seen since they were uploaded. Almost like seeing them for the first time again 😄👍
The still shot of Dad and his boy brought a watering eye to this separated father currently without his younguns. I felt the love

I just blamed the pollen in the air and pretended it didn't happen....
There is a reason why Derek and Family have such a large following. IMO, this is must watch TV. Excellent content, funny as all get out, great music selection and the down home feel goods without all the nasty know it all vibes and F-bombs. 841,000 subs can't be wrong. Right on Derek.
Agreed however this isnt tv this is a guy doing his thing tv is garbage witha budget to send the car to the moon whereas a guy is just a guy living his life
@@coal_minergaming4376 TV was just a descriptive word I used. Just like Derek says spark-a-laters, fuel make it happeners and a Tonya Harding.
@@coal_minergaming4376 Derek is awesome and a true force to be reckoned with but he also no doubt doing ok with the TH-cam bucks coming in and deservedly so. Ever watch a live stream? They make bank.
UK based here but the humour from over the pond with Derek is spot on. Really enjoy the videos. Keep it up!!
Lmao a guy just being a guy raising his family up right! Love the father son moment at 55 minutes in
A great Dad, makes for a happy family. Blessings, Derek, for setting such a great example. It’s cool to see how wonderful your boys are turning out, after 2+ years of observing y’all. Keep doing what you’re doing. Thanks for sharing.
There is nothing better than watching VGG with a cold snack and enjoying seeing these old girls come back to life ..

Did anyone else catch Bentley's very polite and unprompted "thank you" when Derek handed him his pizza? Parenting done right. God bless you both.
I did!!!!
And I was THUROUGHLY impressed....good parenting is the product of genuine love combined with an ability to GET OVER ONES' SELF....And, apparently, Derek has nailed it
He looked and sounded like a smashing young man
This is weird the internet makes people weird
Well behaved and mannered kids is such a rarity these day.
Why name the child after a British car tho.
Your a good man Charlie Brown. Watch that in 20 years . GOD BLESS

Turbo diesel Scout - rare. Road trip with son - priceless.
A SCOUT??? With a NISSAN diesel????? I didn't even know Nissan made a diesel.
@@if66was99 yep. And international made very few of these with diesels. Thats why Derek said he was gonna keep it. He is probably gonna fix all the rust and make it run and drive perfect. Its so valuable in the amazing shape its in.
@@if66was99 Nissan pick ups came in diesel in the 80's
Why were the diesel variants so rare? From what I've read, a diesel engine produces more torque then a gasoline engine.
Torque is something that I would want in something that is made for off-road use.
@@mikeholland1031 Why don't they make a diesel anymore?
I recently lost contact with my 14 and 15 year old boys, we were close, they helped me restore my mini and worked on my t4. I really love what you have with your son. Reminds me of better times. Beautiful
What a sweet and cool shot where a guy put his hand on his son's shoulder to reast his head, then he looked at him and both smiled. Almost brought tears to this guy who also is a dad! My son is about that same age. Priceless memories your making. Your a good man and father!
I'm glad Bentley was able to go with you. That's a memory he will never forget.
Yup...how did Dad and I do this and not die? Got memories like this with my dad and uncles. All good ones, too. Tons of fun.

JUST REWATCHING SOME OLD VIDEOS, MAN BENTLEY HAS GROWN UP IN THREE YEARS. IT'S KINDA COOL TO VIZIT THESE OLDER VIDEOS. 👍✌
This Scout is so cool, I had no idea they had a Nissan Diesel powered Scout 2, unicorn material!
Never went on any road trips with my dad when I was young, but last summer we drove from Seattle to South Carolina...I might as well have been a kid again, that'll stick in the memory forever.
A kid's gonna remember this for the rest of his life. Another great one Derek, thanks.
I don't know what it is I like most about your videos, can't put my finger on it. Your way of interacting with the family, the wrenching, the unique vocabulary, or the road trips home. Every part is just awesome.
As a dad to a 18 yr old son 1:03:05 hits me right in the feels man! Cherish the days when they are that age man! Before you know it they will be moving out to go to college. Beautiful father and son experience for you both!
well, not everyone wants collage... sometimes they'll want to go to a trade school, and they'll be home longer.. and you'll have more time for projects w them
When the video paused it got me too.
I wish I had moments like that with my father... he had other priorities...
Man. Me too. Made me cry. That's what it's all about. The time spent is the most important thing
That's a great picture.

This video made me a bit misty...now I miss my dad. Thanks for “the feels”, this video really had some touching moments
The smile Dad would give me when he knew I was happy to be picking apples with him, feeding the chickens or helping him cut winters wood with his tractor saw rig. Oh God so many years ago. I’m 73 now.
It makes my heart glad to see a father involving his children. I do with my sons but my old man... well... he simply didn't bring on the thunder. Great job Derek.
Internationals were made in my hometown, of Rock Island, Illinois. 35 years ago, they closed the doors of the IH Farmall Works, Rock Island, Illinois, on June 27, 1986.
All good things have an ending
My father never once owned a new vehicle. My mother did. I remember him driving us to school in a 1964 Ford Falcon in the late 1980s. Chalked paint and holes in the floor board.
My dad would of loved your videos. I was your son in the passenger side back then. You would of liked my dad. Make the best memories with your kids. You remind me of my dad. I don’t really cry that often but man it’s getting dusty in here.
A guy and his son on their first rescue mission to save an SD33. I loved this episode! One of my favorites so far!
Does anyone else strictly watch him for his outstanding display of the vehicular commentary. Love it boss keep it up !
Yes and because he's crazy like me 🤣😅
Ya know they have 12 step programs for Simps like you
I can't tell if it's his style of humor that I like so much or the fact that i dont think you could put a vehicle in front of him that he doesn't know his way around. It's like he's a walking Chilton manual.

I still see my Dad wrenching on the cars out in the driveway. He was always ready to help me work on the next car I dragged home be it a camaro, mustang, or Jeep To him it didn't matter
My dad has the pickup version of this truck with the same engine and transmission. I cannot wait until he decides he no longer wants it at this place and it can come home with me. His does not have much rust at all and the engine/transmission work great.
"Yep. She's higher than Willie Nelson" - I'm adding that one to the Sayings section in the Derek Wiki.
Best episode so far, the father son bond is so strong, my dad has been gone for 6 years and he taught me so much about cars/mechanics I miss him every sec. Thanks for the video!
Road trips with my dad when he was working were some of my best memories of him.Hes been gone 40 years now... this was an excellent episode!!
My dad passed 15 years ago and rarely a day passes when I don't think "dad would love that" or find myself saying things he said. I used to love just spending time with him, al his little jokes and those "don't tell mum" moments!
That little human will remember that trip for the rest of his life.

That sushi slicer must have been cutting onion's on the drive. You and you're son will remember that drive for ever. Made me miss my Dad, RIP 1933 to 2007 miss ya Pops.
I can't wait for when your son goes back to school , and has to write " What I did this Summer". I went with my Dad to pick up and drive back a 30 year Diesel powered International Scout 700 miles after sitting for 20 years in a field. He'll definitely get an A. Great video. And a very well behaved son.
Yahtzee, right there.
I’ve been commenting all over hell and back on your channel since I found it lately. This is the kinda stuff this country needs more of, just honest good ole American humor and topics such as this.
Too many idiots have gotten by with far too much lately. That’s all I’m gonna say.
Always love it when you bring a rig back to life but seeing you spend the on the road time with your boy was my favorite part and the song "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms " was also a real treat ! I hope and pray that you and your family know who's everlasting arms the song is referring to.
I came to Jesus Christ 16 years ago and it's the only decision in this life that has eternal results. As always love your channel.
Amen, Brother. That is my prayer, too.🙏🏻 ✝️
It’s just ridiculous how perfect this channel is.
Really excited to drive it again.
that is awesome
The "just gonna pretend i didn't see that" phrase never gets old
Just so you know, I subscribed after the first five minutes of the first video of yours I was watching, 100 plus video’s later your content only gets better! Had my daddy not died in an accident when I was 9yo I think this is what my life would’ve been with my dad! Bentley and Derek please stay safe and keep on trucking together!!!

Great to see the young man pumped for the road trip. Best part, I didn't see a device in his hand.
"Now we just sit here, for.....forever. That's fine" Love it, making memories with the boy. He'll remember this for the rest of his life.
I love when real personality pops through, especially when Chris is in the background and laughs. I wonder how hard it is for him to stay so quiet when on camera.
is chris the one in overalls and is he his brother?
@@harleyquinn2864 Yes. Derrek calls him Crang, but in other videos, he refers to him as Chris. I called him Chris as I assume his friends and family call him Crang and I haven't had the pleasure to meet him yet.
The 1:03:11 mark in the video hit me right in the feelers big time, as a father to three boys it reminded of road trips with my kids.
My father passed away over two years ago and I miss stuff like this. 😢
Unfortunately, the other half of the population, lets technology and ideologies raise their kids. You know the kind I’m talking. 😅
Derick and family are what America is all about! 🦅🇺🇸🦅 I still say You're doing God's work. 👌
And that's how memories are made good job
I want to thank Jessica for giving the thumbs up to Bentley's ride-along. He seems to have his uncle's quiet personality when in front of the camera.
Thanks Derek for providing some wholesome content. This is definitely motivating me to do some more day trips with the fam.
The most amazing part of that road trip home was the fact that the kid didn't have his face buried in a cell phone the entire way. Well done.
and how much he looks like his dad, mannerisms and all?
You can fix kids and cell phones by snatching as needed
