Is A £50 Smartphone Worth It? | Doogee X95 Budget Phone

  • Testing out a £50 (or $60 US) budget smartphone to see if this super-cheap mobile is great value, or best avoided. The Doogee X95 can be grabbed direct from the manufacturer and so far it's one of the cheapest handsets of 2020. But is it one of the best value phones for under £100, or a bit of a clunker?
It's an Android Go smartphone, using a stripped-down version of Google's OS designed for budget devices. You still have full access to the Play Store however, while some special Android Go apps come pre-installed to keep things running smoothly.
I had no problem streaming video on Netflix, TH-cam and so on, with a 720p HD display keeping things relatively crisp. Of course if you want to get gaming on PubG or Fortnite, you'll definitely need to look elsewhere.
Likewise, despite rocking a triple-lens camera, the Doogee X95 is basic at best for photo and video capture. It's fine for simple shareable shots if conditions are good, but that's about it.
Check out my reviews of the best budget smartphones of 2020 to see which alternatives might be best for you.

I'm on my second Doogee phone and I'm very impressed. I can't remember the model of the first on but the one I'm using now is the BL7000. That's a 7000 mah battery which lasts ages, although I can see a decline after two years. It cost about £150 from an eBay seller. There's no way I would stump up hundreds for an iPhone. This does all I need.

Been using this as a secondary phone and as an IP camera through Alfred. It's great for that. Also it is fairly easy to massively improve the experience by using custom app replacements. I used a different launcher and widget (Niagara + KWGT) and it feels almost premium. Lightroom or Open Camera will substitute the camera app very well.
Of course it is still slow and the speaker sucks, but for £50 I can't complain at all.

Something like that is all a lot of people need. Like a lot of my workmates I use my phone for calls (yes people under 50 ,they do that as well ) Texts,a bit of messaging ,e-mail and to catch up on the news/football scores. Phones these days ,apart from low spec ones, Motorola E's, low end Huaweis etc ,are very clever, massively powerful and do all kinds of things that are great if you need those features.....but not everyone does. Some turn their noses up at the cheapies but those who buy them know what they're capable of and it's all they want from a phone.

Ok so in the past few years I've been rocking budget phones like this. I went from iPhone 5 to the first doogee mix, which was goodneith AMOLED screen and small bezel. I wanted to support their brand so I then moved to doogee mix two, main sell was dual selfie and that's it, was nothing like the first mix. Anyway, so knowing that both those phone had fake additional cameras, or perhaps they were depth censors, I decided to movie onto umidigi f1 play, it was good for 2day battery 5000mah, nice full screen with tear drop front cam. All these devices had shit camers, they are good for media consumption and long batter life. I got the Umidigi f2 for my girlfriend, great batter, bad camera good for media and medium weight gaming.
I decided enough is enough and wanted to go back to a flagship with 2012 pricing and good cameras, so I'm currently using the REALME X50 PRO, it's good, really good across the board. The ONEPLUS NORD seems like it's taken a few ques from it after watching their reveal yesterday, maybe just coincidence. I got my girlfriend the Huwai P30 pro purely for it's cameras.
Moral of the story you get what you pay for but smartphone companies are just taking the piss out on its consumers because we eat everything up.

The first and cheapest was an x10, slow, needed high quality signal to work properly. But absolutely ok for 25£. Then a doogee shoot 2. Nice phone with nice size on the battery but it had a defect screen from the beginning, sad story. Then a x20, great phone but after 3G was given the emergency companies the phone became outdated. Then a LTE Y8. The Y8 can not be updated for some reason. Works ok still. When I see the x95 I think I am going to try this one too....For sale on aliexpress for 620,- Nkr

Thanks for this review. My current smartphone is about to die and I'm not due to an upgrade until January so I needed a basic cheap phone to last me for a bit. Ordered one from Amazon and I should have it by tomorrow, with a 20 percent discount code I got the phone for £55.99, which is an absolute steal.
However, the phone has Android 10 Go, which limits it a bit, but I found at least two custom roms for the Doogee X95. Lineage 17 and a AOSP custom rom, which I will attempt to install.
You also mentioned that this phone has only micro USB, but it has a 10 Watt charger and the phone supports fast charging as well. But if you want a phone in the same price range, with similar specs and it has the modern USB-C connection, I can recommend to check out Oukitel C19.

It's an older phone but you should look at the Umidigi Power, I've been using it for 7 months and no complaints even for a £90 phone, only possible complaint is power and it doesn't come with a galley app but the Simple Gallery app is a quick perfect fix, good cameras and battery life with a FHD screen

The camera tech doesn't look too bad for the price. I have a galaxy a11 and it was 220 Canadian and it has about the same quality..

It looks like a Nokia X20 which has 128mb internal memory & 6gb RAM, & the same pull out sim, memory card tray. I suppose you could defeat the face recognition security by sticking a photo in front of the camera?
