    Good explaining video about the Overdrive, which I have in my 740, 87’.
    Amazing when you just push the button and the revolution just come down a lot, and doesn't last strength

    Thank you for this very informative and easy to understand video.
    One thing I got only after a few watches is how the rotation of the drive shaft is transmitted if the OD is engaged: the planetary assembly is toothed as well at it´s inner diameter, so it is driven by the drive shaft. As the sun wheel stands still, the unidirectional clutch is overtaken.

    Hey Robert, great video. I’ve been having some difficulties with my m46 that I think you may be able to help me out with. The issue is that I can’t give my 740 any more than 25% throttle in all forward gears! As soon as I put my foot down the car revs up as if the main engine clutch is burnt out. I’ve replaced the main clutch but the problem persists. Reverse still works like normal so that’s why I’m thinking it’s something in the trans. Could it be that the conical clutches are worn? Or maybe the pump isn’t creating enough pressure? Maybe a stuck relief valve? Eager to hear what you have to say:)

      You need oil pressure only for OD. Take it apart and check internals for wear. Check the plate/dish cluch in OD section. Good luck!

      @@robertdeptula2003 Hi! It is impossible that overdrive can cause slip on forward gears while turned off, am I right? Because one-way clutch prevents slip and hard locks gearbox shaft with the output flange, right? So the guy's above problem can't be caused by overdrive unit, right? (the only way if you can install that unidirectional clutch inside out). But is it possible that overdrive unit can cause slip on reverse gear? Seems possible for me, correct me if I am wrong. Thank you!

    Very educational video, thanks.
    One thing i don't quite understand tho. What about engine braking? How come the unidirectional clutch is not overtaken on downhills?

    • @mikakumpulainen1246
      @mikakumpulainen1246 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I managed to figure it out. The other friction cone of the sliding clutch locks the sun gear to the ring gear, so the whole planetary gear unit rotates as one (when the od is disengaged), making engine braking and reversing possible. Phew.

    I got the chance to snap low mileage 740 sedan with 2.4dt engine and manual 4 speed overdrive gearbox, would you say it is as reliable as just a regular manual? Thanks

      If you can swap it with M90 transmission, no overdrive 5 speed. Volvo didn't sell cars with this option in North America. If you are in Europe you can find it.

    Is there a transmission that fits a non-original Volvo 740

    • @robertdeptula2003
      @robertdeptula2003  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't believe there is one that fits right away. You have to modify bellhousing.
