Thank you , Thank you ....this was fantastic. You answered so many questions that I had. This is my second year and I really wanted to be better with succession planting this year. I'm taking the leap and doing the paperwork for starting the business, which is a little scary, but l'm determined. I'm doing a little bit of everything, roadside, farmers markets, Subscription bouquets, and a u-pick in the late summer, maybe 2, just to see which I like doing best. Thank you so much again. Your video last year about the u-pick was so helpful too. ❤😊🎉
I only planted once my first year. I had no clue about cool season and warm season annuals. That said ,bIm in zone 3 and the season is so short that I think pinching back may just serve as a next succession . I'm going to try to get my cool season annuals in early including a batch of sunflowers and early Chantilly snapdragons.

Question for you, do you find that when you’re doing another succession planting, if you had ripped out the plants that had flowered already, that the new seedlings would not grow because they are blocked from the sun by the taller plants in front of them? Hi!! I am so new to flower farming - how many stems in a bouquet is good? How would i calculate how many plants i would need to have enough for a certain amount of bouquets? Would i need to count how many stems a plant gives me, like zinnias? Love this so much. I love the growing part as much as the calculating and tracking part
Thank you for all this great info! I also use drip irrigation, and have a question about how you lay it out. For example - when you have 9" spaced plants - 4 rows in a 3 ft bed - do you put in 4 rows of drip tape - one for each row... sometimes I've put in 3 and spaced the drip between the rows but that may not be best. Thanks for your help!!
How much drip tape you'll need in your flower beds really depends on the type of soil you have + the type of ground cover you may use. We have a bit of clay in our soil which retains quite a bit of moisture- so I can get away with fewer lines of drip per bed compared to someone who may plant in sandy soil where the moisture goes straight through. I also use less drip in beds which are covered in plastic mulch. The plastic helps retain moisture. And so in our annual field with 3 ft beds that are covered in plastic I can usually get away with just one line of drip per bed. Compartively, when I use landscape fabric- that seems to be much more breathable and often requires more drip tape. In areas of my field where I plant with landscape fabric I may have 4 or more lines of drip- it takes some experimenting to know what will work best for you!
I’m in zone 3 so succession’s can be tricky. Sunflowers and zinnia might work if you start your first succession in house and then when you put them out, direct seed another batch and that might work well n short season. We usually only have 90 days.
oof! I can see how that short of a growing season would be a challenge! Hopefully that means that you can grow lots of cold-loving flowers.. the longer I grow flowers, the more the cool season stuff steals my heart :)

We really don't use much flower food so unfortunately I don't have any suggestions for you- We find that with fresh, clean water + harvesting sunflowers at the right stage of harvest, we're able to get a good 7 days of vase life :)
While flowers like zinnias do bloom abundantly- they often don’t bloom indefinitely. At some point in the season the will start to slow their production and produce lesser quality blooms. When this happens it’s nice to have another succession of flowers ready to go. As time passes sometimes zinnias can become diseased with powdery mildew as well which again can slow production so we like to have multiple waves blooming 😀

We start 99% of our seeds inside before planting out into our garden (sunflowers we usually direct sow)
