Hi Danielle, I LOVE your channel - so beautiful and useful, so much knowledge and real life gardening information. Thank you for taking the time to making videos that help people like me - home gardeners who like to grow cut flowers in the landscape and not just in a farm-like configuration. Can you please show in one of the future videos how you replace the sunflowers in the ground after you cut them? How do you manage the planting areas for the sunflowers? Are you planting the same area with other kind of sunflowers or is it important to let the ground "rest" and plant something else in the same place? Thank you so much.
I needed this video! I have had such pest pressure I have no sunnys yet. I’m going to start a tray or two right now! I was trying to direct sow but it’s not working at all.
Try getting procut orange excel they’re faster than regular procuts. I’m also doing Queen lime series all three colors. Good luck this season! I planted two sunflower seeds in October and they came up in April like a hardy annual! I’ve tried using human hair around the sprouts and nothing bothered them. Try using human hair! Lol
Flower farming certainly is alot of planning and time management! Thank you for sharing your successes with us. Would you consider doing a video specifically on how you garden organically as a certified pollinator friendly garden?
wow, i loved this video! it was so useful for me to know how much land you are gardening on and how many bouquets you can produce a week. i love that you’re growing cut flowers in the landscape. your videos are so relaxing!
I don't have any luck to plant seeds indoors or containers. Do you need to have the lights to plant seeds indoors? I seem to have much better luck to plant the seeds directly in the ground. Thank you for your help!
This video is excellent!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and garden with us! Do you ever have a problem transplanting your sunflowers? I heard they don’t transplant well, but a family of quail is decimating every seed I plant, so I’m looking to start inside.
Hi Danielle! I believe I've heard that as well. I've never had a problem transplanting them. I only let them sit in the tray two weeks. Perhaps leaving them in trays too long is where that thought comes from.
OMG, I learned so much from you. just can't thank you enough. What are your thoughts about succession planting if we garden as a hobby, but not for biz? Should we do it less frequently or not at all? Thanks!!!
Thanks Danielle. You got me thinking about successive planting. Do you think starting seeds outside under shade would work? That way they would be hardened off.
I am wondering the same thing! Do you keep empty spaces in anticipation of upcoming succession plantings or do you time it so that you rip out previous plantings? How do you know what will be done?
I am in the same zone as you... probably live only about 30 minutes from you as I saw in one of your videos you went to Ken’s garden center which I love!! I put in 5 flower beds 26’ x 3’ and I wanted to know how often do you water?? I have sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos, snapdragons and poppy’s. But I’m so confused about “water 1” a week.” How often and how much do you water!!?? Thanks so much!!
Hi there neighbor. Such a hard question to answer, but I'll do my best. I focus my watering on newly planted things, and things I know are water hungry (sweet peas, ranunculus, dahlias, etc). I water everything in very well upon planting. Deep watering less often is better than shallow watering often. So much depends on weather. Not only how much it rains, but how hot and windy it is. A cool week without wind will not dry out the soil as much as a heat wave with strong winds. Since we are having a heat wave right now I'm watering more than normal. The plants will start to tell you if they are in distress. If anything even remotely starts to melt down I know I need to up the watering on that crop.
Thanks for sharing your gardening philosophy. The numbers you succession plant are super helpful too. One quick question, when you planted the sunflowers did you use seed starting soil or regular potting soil? Thanks again for a great video! 👍🏻🌼
Hi Marie! Are you in a zone similar to me? 6b? I have tried this with success. You just have to be careful that the seeds dont dry out. The cells dry out quickly outside. I really like to use the heat mat to get them going. It assures great germination.
@@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens Thanks Danielle . I live in zone 6 in Massachusetts . I think I will try seeds both ways, some inside some outside. Really enjoy your videos!
I’ve done a little succession planting, some of my 2 week successions stretched to 3....definitely a good idea to do gladiolus successions, since I have hundreds of corms! Loved this video, so informative. Can I ask, how on earth do you keep up with the weeds?
Can you just direct sow snaps in the ground or should you always start in trays indoors? I’ve never started sunflowers indoors but I may because I think some critters are getting some of mine likely birds because only a handful of what I planted came up.
Hi Danielle! I love watching your videos. They have so much great information! I have a small flower stand, we started growing flowers last year. I’m wondering if you have a certain seed starting soil you like to use? Thank you!
I have never done succession planting and I'm wondering what you think about direct sowing succession planting ... is this okay? ... I have the space to direct sow and in all honesty, I am intimidated about transplanting and the time involved with hardening off ...
Just curious...do you do straight sunflower bouquets at your stand? Or use fillers? And if so what are some of your favorite fillers for bouquets with sunflowers?
Hi there friends. I sell them mainly in mixed bouquets. I like to try and add foliage, spike, and sparkle. In late spring ladies mantel, snaps, and forsythia or in fall goldenrod, obendiant plant, and forsythia. I hope that helps! Sedum and celosia work well also!
First I thought succession planting was where you planted in the same area. It seems you plant in another area. What if you don’t have much garden area/space? Dig up the old? How do you know when the older plants will stop producing flowers? 😅
Is it possible to leave your seedlings outside (while waiting on germination) since it's warm enough now? I was hoping I was done with the heat mat and indoor grow lights for awhile
Hi Danielle, unrelated question but I'm not sure where to ask: has your vitex shown signs of life yet? I'm on season 3 and I think I remember that last year it was a little slower than other shrubs but can't recall for sure. I'm zone 6 in Ohio and similar weather.
Hi Stacy! Mine is about 1/2 leafed out here in 6b. It seems that they seem to leaf out around the same time as the crepe myrtle. One year it died all the way back to the ground. Any new shoots near the base? If you break a branch do you see green? Hoping it will leaf out for you soon.
I am growing procut sunflowers for the first time, I didn't realize you only get one flower per stem? Is that what you said? So how close do you plant them together? Does the plant not get as big as a regular sunflower or branching sunflower? Last year I grew a ton of branching sunflowers and the plants grew huge and took up alot of space for just one plant.
Thank you so much for this info! Just getting to sow a second wave of sunflowers due to rabbits mowing down my entire first wave 😕Where did you get your watering can? It seems to be a lot more ergonomic than the typical cans, including the one I have. Thanks again!
I'm definitely struggling with succession planting. The dang crows keep eating every seed I put out. 😒 ordered bird netting to put over the beds until the sunflowers get much bigger.
Hi Debra! For something that branches like a zinnia I will wait until it becomes hard to locate a good flower in the row. At that point I move on to the next succession. I practice crop rotation whenever possible. If and when I get powdery mildew on zinnias I pull them at that time. I will get a good number of cuts from each zinnia plant before they wane or become diseased. Things that will only produce one stem can be pulled immediately after harvest.
Do you have any probems having your cats using your bulb patches and garden beds as litter places? I have been having problems where my cats ruin all my recently transplanted plants and it's heartbreaking LOL
