The story of Xiahouji would be more interesting if she was an enemy of Shu who was forced to marry Zhang Fei. During her journey, she attempts to either reunite with her homeland or facilitate a peace treaty between Wei and Shu (like her plot during Xiahou Ba's defection in real history). Instead of crafting a nuanced narrative, they merely transform her into a woman fixated on her abductor...
I prefer if Zhu Ran was more of a jerk, so it can strengthen him and Lu Xun’s rivalry. Thus, Lu Xun can prove himself at Yiling and they can work together and respect each other. You know? Character development. Instead Zhu Ran is just Lu Xun’s generic friend and sometimes rival. It honestly hurts both of their development.
That would be cool, similar to gan ning ling tong, start out as a hot headed jerk that comes around eventually, maybe lu xun saves him or something, like in DW5 with gan and Ling

Xiahouji is what happens when you add a character based on popularity(IIRC she was one of the top-rated DW Blast characters in Japan) but don't consider the how and why for her addition. As in, why is she popular, and how can she be implemented. What made her popular is something that doesn't hold much weight in an action game. When you look at the weapon they gave her, it was clear they had no real design idea for her, just made the Blast character 3D and dumped her into the game. it's particularly jarring when you look at Dong Bai, whose design also originated from Blast; there's a clear idea for her both in character and weapon, since she's basically meant to be Dong Zhuo's mini-me. She also has way more character interactions, including a one-way rivalry with Lu Bu for revenge, and is bombastic and entertaining.
Unfair comparison - Dong Bai gets a pass even in the West I've noticed despite also being a loli (a goth one though so she stands out). She was doted on by her grandfather but historically that's your lot that we have on her thus they went with "spoiled brat" and of course her dom elements to tie in with her grandfather and persona. Xiahouji? She was historically every young when Zhang Fei took her and she was mother to his kids - there was a clear blueprint to follow there from what we know - young & motherly. Obv it's not an M rated game so they sorted the obv issues but they wanted an accurate representation and gave her one.
This is why Koei needs to stop adding characters that had very little involvement to the 3 kingdoms storyline, that’s the main issue really, if only they added people like Liao Hua as a playable character who actually was in the story for a long period of time
Yeah its weird they add these characters when theres people with way more involvement but even then if you add them at least give them interesting things to do
Yet many like him didn't really do much - they're just as much filler as some of the list. Liao Hua was a yellow scarf - after they were put down he was rejected offering his services and when he does get accepted he heads off to help Guan Yu at Fan Castle. Basically he does nothing for vast majority of the battles the game covers... "He lived a long time" doesn't offer much really. Simply put MOST of the better options are in game already
@@TheNightowlGaming off topic but don’t disrespect Zhu Ran like that, his flame bow isn’t that hard to use, the bow has a lock in mechanic, kinda like the Dainsleif in Warriors Orochi 4, all of his attacks are based off that, and if there’s no one around to lock in then you don’t hit anyone; although in my opinion the worst character debut was Sima Shi in DW7 because of his rapier sword not doin as much damage as everyone else and it takes longer for you to rack up kills but that may just be me🤷🏾♂️
As Hua Xiong's biggest fanboy - really disagree on your assessment of the guy. The game makes it clear throughout his story mode that he isn't necessarily stupid, he's "simple" he makes one leap in logic and sticks to it. In fact, multiple times throughout the game, he shows off that he's an incredibly competent commander. First mission he mocks Zhang Lu's rebellion for their terrible supply bases, when he's defending Sishui Gate he holds the line and commands his archers from behind the gate, and even Cao Cao says that he was wrong to assume Hua Xiong was a 'mere barbarian.' I see him as being similar to Goku, he's stellar when it comes to warfare and combat, but he's far behind elsewhere. Plus, Hua Xiong says outright, that it was always a dream of his to lead an army, not to be a big bungus swinging a stick, but be a Commander. He's legitimately a good general, at least in his story mode. And I think he's actually one of the more interesting characters DW9 had to offer, one of my favourite things, that I feel like lots of people missed, is that the story suggests he might be 'one' of the strongest people in the franchise. When he's fighting Lu Bu, he was under specific orders to hold back, Lu Bu was also holding back in that fight, and they were evenly matched at first. When Lu Bu stopped holding back, he mocked Hua Xiong for not noticing, and saying stuff like, "If you couldn't tell that I was holding back, it just proves you're a weak insect." but Lu Bu didn't realize Hua Xiong was also- holding back. When Hua Xiong gets mad, he changes stance, he stops swaggering around slowly and cocky, and he rushes Lu Bu, he's actually taking it seriously now- But that's when the fight is ended, Hua Xiong and Lu Bu never actually fought 'for real' , and it's implied Hua Xiong is closer in strength to Lu Bu than we thought. My assumption for how he died so easily to Guan Yu, was he was just not taking it seriously, big inflated ego. Which, personally I think makes sense for him, Hua Xiong even in the source material is violent, boastful, and doesn't really think things through.
Nothing wrong with disagreeing! Some good points! Alot of references you made were from his like non cutscene story pieces from DW9 which I don't particularly remember. But from his cutscenes in dw9 his cadence & speech pattern indicates a slower & lower intelligence person that I don't think needs to be hammered in so heavily. That's what I'm saying, if they dialed down the "xu zhu" effect, it would be more a grounded person, also my expectation for him was high which led to disappointment, I was expecting to see a representation similar to his DW7 self
- Cai Wenji debuted in Strikeforce 2 with Er-Hu as a weapon. Yeah, harp is so-so. - Ma Dai's weapon is so blah. Concept wise it's great but my god it's frustrating to play with. - I actually like Guo Huai's schtick. Please add more funny warriors like him. - I wish they add more craziness to Zhou Cang personality since he is a former Yellow Turban, he would pair so well with Wei Yan. - Han Dang's current design is so unique unlike the new cloned pretty-faced strategists of Wei. I hope they give him more personality in the future.
Yah CW in Strikeforce, but 7 for the main series, Interesting you see Guo Huai as funny but I respect it!! and I agree with Zhou Cang, Han Dang they don't need him to be pretty but better personality yes
Bro Xiahou Ji character debut is a travesty. Even better, the board room (don’t know who approves the characters to be made) and the developers of the game saw her character and they were like “she’s the one” out of all the female characters to add as a dlc/playable for Shu. Better yet character designed her the way she is in DW9. 😭
Completely agree with everyone in this list. Like so many of these characters just should not be playable. And the more characters they add they diloute from others. Unless they go back to DW5 where everyone has their own story which I doubt they would do again with so many characters. I think most characters on this list should just be non-playable. Like they appear in cutscenes and that’s it.
Xiahouji was definitely the worst, I 100% agree. Beyond the fact that I hate how she and Zhang Fei get portrayed as some loving happy couple, I absolutely do NOT understand why they thought it would be appropriate to portray her as a little girl. Before her reveal, I was worried that this was what we would get thanks to her card in Shin Sangoku Musou Blast. I hoped against hope that they would make her a grown woman, especially considering her children are in the game and look older than her. My hope was that, even if the Blast design was the inspiration, they'd aim for an older version that was less timid and shy, and more soft spoken and caring, in a similar vein to Cai Wenji. That type of personality contrasting with her weapon being a sword and shield, would have been far more interesting than a shy scared little girl. I just could not take it seriously hearing Xingcai and Zhang Bao calling this kid "mother" lmao
I was truly floored when I finally bought this game at the end of last year. I didnt know she was.even in the game. I could not believe that they not only put her in the game, but PORTRAYED her the way they did. Koei mustve been smokin' and sniffin' something serious to apporve that.
On contrary, I do miss Ma Dai Paintbrush, that weapon does make it "him" than being a Zhang Liao clone with Dual Halbert. 😂 Hope they make it back on next game.
I will admit to playing a significant percentage of the Lu Bu campaign in XL with Birds and Beasts as my secondary. It's not a bad weapon, just an unrealistic one.
I think Cai Wenji is an amazing character her musical weapon the harp makes her so fun!! I love her moveset!! Also her historical counterpart is very depressing i kind of want to see that added in the next game! She also needs her harp returned to her 💜💜💙💜💙💙
My list: 1. Bao Sanniang 2. Cai Wenji 3. Da Qiao 4. Xiao Qiao 5. Guan Suo 6. Xin Xianying 7. Han Dang 8. Pang Tong 9. Xun You 10. Guan Ping 1-4 just straight up didn't have any role whatsoever in the story of the games they were introduced in. Guan Suo was a fairly useless add, the fictional 3rd son of Guan Yu, and just felt very forgettable. Xin Xianying was severely underutilized in DW9, she has so much potential and I think they squandered in in DW9 by having her story end so early. Han Dang was just very forgettable and should have been Cheng Pu instead in DW8. Pang Tong literally shows up for 1 battle in DW3 (2 if you count his minor appearance at Chi Bi if he even shows up there that game), just very easy to forget he exists in that game. Xun You is just too redundant, he doesn't add or change anything that Jia Xu, Guo Jia, Xun Yu, and Man Chong can't already do, but better. Plus his personality was like watching paint dry he is so serious and boring. And Guan Ping was fine, but he really didn't add much besides Fan Castle, it just seems there could have been more important characters to add as early as DW5 that would have had a bigger role on the story or had more appearances in battles. Also since you asked I'll mentioned I'm a huge Guo Huai fan haha. Easily top 5 DW characters, same with Ma Dai. I just like that Guo Huai contrasts so many other Jin characters that exhaust their loyalty and betray, whereas he is a character who is so loyal to Wei that it exhausts his own body. Plus the cannon has sick crowd control and AoE.
Fair enough! Facts about Guo Huai's weapon, but my goodness do you find his coughing like appealing? It just needs to be dialed down, maybe he's a character who constantly smokes instead and thats why he coughs, that'd be cool. But everything else you said, fair points for suree, at least the older characters got better! Xin Xianying got's hope, hopefullly lol
@@TheNightowlGaming Ehh, I agree that his coughing is over the top, but a lot of DW characters just fall into a trope that is overdone to death to the point of getting annoying, so I don’t mind it that much more than others. Like take Ma Chao mentioning justice every other word, Zhu Ran talking about fire, Zhang He talking about beauty, Guan Ping talking about his father, etc. So I don’t mind the coughing that much. I like that they incorporated some historical events into his persona (he was sick during Cao Pi’s coronation and during the early stages of Mt. Ding Jun), that he was one of Wei’s best generals, was fiercely loyal in contrast to a lot of other Jin characters, and has a fun weapon.
I think Cai Wenji is a fun character! I just think what they could do with her is make her a character who just wants the return of the Han in a similar way to DiaoChan. It would give her a reason to serve CaoCao beyond just being rescued by him and maybe she could plot and defect in a later part of the story as she grows to see him for what he truly is.
@@TheNightowlGamingI’ve thought about it even more and CaiWenji and Diaochan should interact and have a friendship it makes too much sense not to go in that direction with the character. Diaochan according to the encyclopedia was born in 176 and CaiWenji in 177. Both of them were in the capital at the same time and both were gifted performers with fathers with political aspirations in direct opposition to DongZhuo.
If I may interject, There actually is proof of them having a sort of friendship in one of the games as in Dynasty Warriors 7 extreme legends, if you play as either Diao Chan or Cai Wenji and have the other as an ally in battle, reinforcements for a battle, appoint them as your advisor to your town in legends mode or have them as an enemy officer or commander, they have unique interactions and dialogue with you. If I can remember correctly, If you have them both at maximum friendship and if they’re the enemy, they will show remorse about being forced to fight against you and will not be aggressive towards you even if it’s a battle where they are supposed to fight you aggressively. They will still attack you and be aggressive to any other officer, but not specifically to you.
List is kinda off. Where is likes of Xin Xianying? Wise old lady of Jin who saw through likes of Zhong Hui? Instead she is young hottie with aloof persona who doesn't participate in Jin campaign? (she is literally her father as an addition and timeline not her infamous elder self). Loli Dong Bai who gets a pass but Loli Xiahouji doesn't? When her debut and storyline was literally all just a dream lol. Xiahou Ba? he debuts but as neither Wei or Shu character lol. Oh and then there are the likes of Xu Chu, Wei Yan and Zhang Jao and what they did to THOSE lol Some of these characters were just really close to source including likes of Cai Wenji who after popularity in Strike force was heavily requested to cross into DW proper despite lack of material to go on. She was an adored poet and Cao Cao bought her from captivity but she was at least in the book (unlike many not on this list). Why do likes of Lu Lingqi get a pass? She not only added nothing to the fore but her inclusion has actively pushed Diao Chan out of the narrative.
just my personal list 😁😁 most of em on here are characters that I reacted to back when I first played each game, if that makes sense. Also, I was looking at DW4+ cause I consider DW3 to be the base, cause thats the game i started with plus back then it would be hard to say if they had a rough start cause we didnt really know the characters that well. Guan Suo shoul be a great, handsome, badass warrior with three wifes according to lore, but in DW is represented lik a child. I don't like that of him. I do like Hua Xiong, it's like the "Hunga Bunga" guy😅 When Han Dang says everybody forgets about him and doesn't pay him attention, he was talking about the developers
Not sure if you ever play Warriors all stars but Zhou Cang was pretty cool in that still had the speed thing and Guan Yu obsession. But he was less annoying and moveset was actually really good as it used a version of his moveset he would have had if they didn't change the combat in dynasty warriors 9.
I think Koei want to make Yue Jin & Li Dian to be the Gan Ning & Ling Tong of Wei (even more so in He Fei where they made the trio of Zhang Liao, Yue Jin, Li Dian be like a counterpart for Lu Meng, Gan Ning, Ling Tong), it just they did it half-heartedly it makes the Wei one dynamic don't hit the same as the Wu one, especially on Li Dian's part
I hope they add yan liang and wen chou. And of course yan shao should have a story of his own. I think they should have completely new reimagine scenario story mode like what if guan yu serve cao cao instead, pang tong serve sun quan and eventually one on one battle of dragon vs Phoenix against zhuge liang. What If Lu bu alive after xia pi (if player choose not to kill him) and become a lone wolf bounty hunter stalker nemesis type that pay by certain kingdom to hunt player where he up in pop up random stage.
For all of the characters on this list I agree that they all were disappointing when they debuted but, with the exception of those from DW9, some of these characters I have warmed up to a bit more. Basically, I can some every DW playable character up into 1 of 3 categories: I will play... 1. Yes. 2. Maybe. 3. No. With each new game and subsequent new character, I will play a few time both campaign and in free mode to test them, as any DW player will do. With these characters on your list I would put all of them into: 1. Ma Dai. 2 . Cai Wenji, Bao Sanniang, Li Dian, Guo Huai. 3. Zhu Ran, Zhou Cang, Hua Xiong, Han Dang, Xiahouji. For those in 1, Ma Dai has definitely grown on me over the years as has his move set. For those in 2, they are mainly here due to their weapon and moveset rather than story or personality. For those in3, well, they are a play to max level sort of thing then never again. Future games need to do better with them, but with the track record of how some characters have gone I'm not sure if they will change.

I remember reading something about this on discord I think that apparently eastern audiences really eat up characters like xiao qiao and xiahou ji this was a few years ago and Ive never been to asia so maybe it was just slander but I also find super concerning

This video is old but I have an Idea to make Han Dang Work. Han Dang has a decent career and I like that he is older so what they can do is turn him into a guy living from his old glory days. People do not respect him as much and he still thinks he deserves that glory but it had been too long to be connected to it. Then during one of his major battles they should hype him up again doing a great feat to get that old military respect back he once had. I think it would still be similar to the character today but in a much more different perspective.
100% agree with your list. And totally agree with Han Dang being one of the worst debuts in the series. I hated him every time he opened this mouth. Maybe I would also include Ding Feng, who was added in DW7, yet played literally zero role in story, had a weird personality and kept saying some cringy poetry-like stuff... And also I would 100% add Guan Yu's children, all but Guan Ping. Guan Suo is just poorly designed, completely hollow personality-wise and the only role he played in DW7 is him surviving Fan Castle battle. Also, nunchaku sucks. And while Guan Xing didn't even have anything like that, the only role he got is "Oh, I will avenge my father" and that's it. He also got one of the worst movesets in the series. Guan Yinping is a cutie, but man, I hate her personality. It's almost like she is there just for a meme. The way she breaks stuff with a finger touch, etc. Also, zero role in the overall plot. Guan Suo, Guan Xing and Guan Yinping are just irrelevant.
I like Ding Feng because he looks scary, but he has a passion in poetry. Also, his story is sad since he had to watch all his friends die and his kingdom fall to corruption.
Zhu Ran would be a lot of fun to play as if he had a better moveset. It was unique, but outside of that, it was horrible. Zhou Cang's dialogue was also mega cringe. It also brings in an issue i have had in bringing in fictional characters to take up spots from historically important characters. Same as the Guan children. 2 didn't exist and the other 2 didn't do much. And they are pretty mid characters to play as
I was honestly expecting some of the older characters on the list but this also just kinda shows how much I haven't touched the later games huh? Still if I were to list older characters I feel like I'd have to put down Xiahou Yuan who didn't really get to become a character until DW5. I love him too ofcourse but he had a rough start. Jiang Wei would also be there just because he has that typical shu issue of "I exist! But that's pretty much it!" that I saw pop up on this list a few times.
I forgot that these characters exist. It takes money, time and resources to make these characters. In the future, Koei Tecmo should just keep these characters as NPCs and really focus on the other main characters.

Ehhh, I like Guo Huai. I like that he was depicted as sickly and frail but had essentially a bozooka/machine gun hybrid. It is in no way historically accurate but I think he is memorable.
Guan Suo could always go for a 'Tenchi Muyo' route with his wives (Bao Sanniang, Hua Man, Wang Yue, Wang Tao) ; all personal and political marriages (Bao Sanniang exception as she rescues him) with all the wives competing for affection but never letting it put Guan Suo or the Shu Kingdom in jeopardy.
I do slightly disagree with on Zhu Ran. DW9 did try to fix him and tone down fire obsession bit. I think they stop adding characters or at one per character and that it. To fix ones we got first.
I thought Ma Dai was sick as hell and his painbrush was one of the most fun aeapons added in 7. Guo Huai is also cool because hes this horrible looking shambling man which really makes him stand out among the dw7 cast. Also the arm cannon is THE best dw7 weapon dont @ me
I actually like Zhou Cang. Could he use more development? Yeah, but he's actually one of the few things I like about DW9. IDK how to explain it, but I just really like him. I wouldn't say he's in my top 10, but he'd probably make my top 20
Thank you for making me relive the cringe that is 98% of this list 🥴 I wanted to love Li Dian so bad - and for a while I did - but then his constant “I’ve got a bad feeling about this” never ended and it’s like, sir, it’s called anxiety - we’re in a WAR, either give us actual solutions or keep your mouth shut. And I lowkey love Zhou Cang. I can see why his introduction was super disappointing to a lot of people and how 1-dimensional he is, but I thought he was a good fluff of personality/humor that Shu DESPERATELY needed. In that same vein, leave Ma Dai alone. He’s doing his best out there with his lil paintbrush - my only problem is that it did absolutely 0 damage, which was rude af to do to a character. Wholly in agreement on the rest of the list, though! Han Dang, Xiahouji, and Guo Huai are straight up travesties. It genuinely baffles and angers me that Koei was like “yeah, they’ll resonate with the audience!”. Great work, as always! 👏🏻
I like Guo Huais weapon. Feels like Mega Man to me and the caughing became a running gag to me kinda. For me Han Dang feels like a buffed farmer they picked up on a random field. Oh and Ma Dai (since i am german) i call him "Pinselschwinger" LUL
Just to be speaking the truth, Zhu Ran, Guan Suo, Cai Wenji, Guo Huai, Bao Sanniang, Li Dian and Han Dang are the least usable characters when I used to play Warriors Orochi 4 especially with their Sacred Treasure of choices.
LOL Those arent cowboy hats. I forget what they are called, but that was actually a style from ancient china to have similar hats to those. And there are non-game related paintings portraying Zhou Cang in those hats. And Ma Dai is portrayed with them in old RTK portraits from that game series. As for the tropes, yeah they can be annoying, especially to western fans who like things to be less campy and more serious. But there are a set of tropes that developers tend to use for every game and they just mix them up to make them appear more original. Been doing it since the early days of SNES RPG characters and I hear its done with anime. Sometimes, they will take something about a character and greatly exaggerate it, like Zhu Rans famous fire ambush, or Zhou Cang being a fast runner. Its just the style they do to template so many characters to save time.

When my band toured, we went over there to Osaka in the 1980s, and I learned first hand just how different cultural perspectives are in the world, especially between the far east and the far west., What we laugh at makes them raise and eyebrow and vice versa. Still, I love their people and respect their culture even if sometimes we just don't get it lol!
I pretty much agree with u about all of them, never been a fan of Ma Dai him after finding out he killed my fav Shu Character Wei Yan didn't really like him at all move set was just weird kind of annoying. Guo Huai well, he was a bit of a let down after reading the novel, do like his move set although that's about it.
Yea at first it was Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun but the moment Wei Yan was introduced he's always been my fav didn't like his dw6 moveset loved the other moveset though, Also love that Guan Xing is playable, for Wei my man Xiahou Dun has always been my fav Wei character, Wu's all over the place, Gan Ning, the Sun Jian, then Sun Ce, now Cheng Pu.@@TheNightowlGaming

Xiahouji is what happens when you add a character based on popularity(IIRC she was one of the top-rated DW Blast characters in Japan) but don't consider the how and why for her addition. As in, why is she popular, and how can she be implemented. What made her popular is something that doesn't hold much weight in an action game. When you look at the weapon they gave her, it was clear they had no real design idea for her, just made the Blast character 3D and dumped her into the game. it's particularly jarring when you look at Dong Bai, whose design also originated from Blast; there's a clear idea for her both in character and weapon, since she's basically meant to be Dong Zhuo's mini-me. She also has way more character interactions, including a one-way rivalry with Lu Bu for revenge, and is bombastic and entertaining.

Unfair comparison - Dong Bai gets a pass even in the West I've noticed despite also being a loli (a goth one though so she stands out). She was doted on by her grandfather but historically that's your lot that we have on her thus they went with "spoiled brat" and of course her dom elements to tie in with her grandfather and persona.
Xiahouji? She was historically every young when Zhang Fei took her and she was mother to his kids - there was a clear blueprint to follow there from what we know - young & motherly. Obv it's not an M rated game so they sorted the obv issues but they wanted an accurate representation and gave her one.
This is why Koei needs to stop adding characters that had very little involvement to the 3 kingdoms storyline, that’s the main issue really, if only they added people like Liao Hua as a playable character who actually was in the story for a long period of time

Yeah its weird they add these characters when theres people with way more involvement but even then if you add them at least give them interesting things to do
Yet many like him didn't really do much - they're just as much filler as some of the list. Liao Hua was a yellow scarf - after they were put down he was rejected offering his services and when he does get accepted he heads off to help Guan Yu at Fan Castle. Basically he does nothing for vast majority of the battles the game covers... "He lived a long time" doesn't offer much really.
Simply put MOST of the better options are in game already
@@TheNightowlGaming off topic but don’t disrespect Zhu Ran like that, his flame bow isn’t that hard to use, the bow has a lock in mechanic, kinda like the Dainsleif in Warriors Orochi 4, all of his attacks are based off that, and if there’s no one around to lock in then you don’t hit anyone; although in my opinion the worst character debut was Sima Shi in DW7 because of his rapier sword not doin as much damage as everyone else and it takes longer for you to rack up kills but that may just be me🤷🏾♂️
As Hua Xiong's biggest fanboy - really disagree on your assessment of the guy. The game makes it clear throughout his story mode that he isn't necessarily stupid, he's "simple" he makes one leap in logic and sticks to it. In fact, multiple times throughout the game, he shows off that he's an incredibly competent commander. First mission he mocks Zhang Lu's rebellion for their terrible supply bases, when he's defending Sishui Gate he holds the line and commands his archers from behind the gate, and even Cao Cao says that he was wrong to assume Hua Xiong was a 'mere barbarian.' I see him as being similar to Goku, he's stellar when it comes to warfare and combat, but he's far behind elsewhere. Plus, Hua Xiong says outright, that it was always a dream of his to lead an army, not to be a big bungus swinging a stick, but be a Commander. He's legitimately a good general, at least in his story mode.
And I think he's actually one of the more interesting characters DW9 had to offer, one of my favourite things, that I feel like lots of people missed, is that the story suggests he might be 'one' of the strongest people in the franchise. When he's fighting Lu Bu, he was under specific orders to hold back, Lu Bu was also holding back in that fight, and they were evenly matched at first. When Lu Bu stopped holding back, he mocked Hua Xiong for not noticing, and saying stuff like, "If you couldn't tell that I was holding back, it just proves you're a weak insect." but Lu Bu didn't realize Hua Xiong was also- holding back. When Hua Xiong gets mad, he changes stance, he stops swaggering around slowly and cocky, and he rushes Lu Bu, he's actually taking it seriously now- But that's when the fight is ended, Hua Xiong and Lu Bu never actually fought 'for real' , and it's implied Hua Xiong is closer in strength to Lu Bu than we thought. My assumption for how he died so easily to Guan Yu, was he was just not taking it seriously, big inflated ego. Which, personally I think makes sense for him, Hua Xiong even in the source material is violent, boastful, and doesn't really think things through.
Nothing wrong with disagreeing! Some good points! Alot of references you made were from his like non cutscene story pieces from DW9 which I don't particularly remember. But from his cutscenes in dw9 his cadence & speech pattern indicates a slower & lower intelligence person that I don't think needs to be hammered in so heavily. That's what I'm saying, if they dialed down the "xu zhu" effect, it would be more a grounded person, also my expectation for him was high which led to disappointment, I was expecting to see a representation similar to his DW7 self

- Cai Wenji debuted in Strikeforce 2 with Er-Hu as a weapon. Yeah, harp is so-so.
- Ma Dai's weapon is so blah. Concept wise it's great but my god it's frustrating to play with.
- I actually like Guo Huai's schtick. Please add more funny warriors like him.
- I wish they add more craziness to Zhou Cang personality since he is a former Yellow Turban, he would pair so well with Wei Yan.
- Han Dang's current design is so unique unlike the new cloned pretty-faced strategists of Wei. I hope they give him more personality in the future.

Bro Xiahou Ji character debut is a travesty. Even better, the board room (don’t know who approves the characters to be made) and the developers of the game saw her character and they were like “she’s the one” out of all the female characters to add as a dlc/playable for Shu. Completely agree with everyone in this list. Like so many of these characters just should not be playable. And the more characters they add they diloute from others. Unless they go back to DW5 where everyone has their own story which I doubt they would do again with so many characters. I think most characters on this list should just be non-playable. Like they appear in cutscenes and that’s it.

Xiahouji was definitely the worst, I 100% agree. Beyond the fact that I hate how she and Zhang Fei get portrayed as some loving happy couple, I absolutely do NOT understand why they thought it would be appropriate to portray her as a little girl. Before her reveal, I was worried that this was what we would get thanks to her card in Shin Sangoku Musou Blast. I hoped against hope that they would make her a grown woman, especially considering her children are in the game and look older than her.
My hope was that, even if the Blast design was the inspiration, they'd aim for an older version that was less timid and shy, and more soft spoken and caring, in a similar vein to Cai Wenji. That type of personality contrasting with her weapon being a sword and shield, would have been far more interesting than a shy scared little girl. I just could not take it seriously hearing Xingcai and Zhang Bao calling this kid "mother" lmao

I was truly floored when I finally bought this game at the end of last year. I didnt know she was.even in the game. I could not believe that they not only put her in the game, but PORTRAYED her the way they did. Koei mustve been smokin' and sniffin' something serious to apporve that.

Dynasty Warriors 9 really ruined a ton of characters
I will admit to playing a significant percentage of the Lu Bu campaign in XL with Birds and Beasts as my secondary. It's not a bad weapon, just an unrealistic one.

1-4 just straight up didn't have any role whatsoever in the story of the games they were introduced in. Guan Suo was a fairly useless add, the fictional 3rd son of Guan Yu, and just felt very forgettable. Xin Xianying was severely underutilized in DW9, she has so much potential and I think they squandered in in DW9 by having her story end so early. Han Dang was just very forgettable and should have been Cheng Pu instead in DW8. Pang Tong literally shows up for 1 battle in DW3 (2 if you count his minor appearance at Chi Bi if he even shows up there that game), just very easy to forget he exists in that game. Xun You is just too redundant, he doesn't add or change anything that Jia Xu, Guo Jia, Xun Yu, and Man Chong can't already do, but better. Plus his personality was like watching paint dry he is so serious and boring. And Guan Ping was fine, but he really didn't add much besides Fan Castle, it just seems there could have been more important characters to add as early as DW5 that would have had a bigger role on the story or had more appearances in battles.
Also since you asked I'll mentioned I'm a huge Guo Huai fan haha. Easily top 5 DW characters, same with Ma Dai. I just like that Guo Huai contrasts so many other Jin characters that exhaust their loyalty and betray, whereas he is a character who is so loyal to Wei that it exhausts his own body. Plus the cannon has sick crowd control and AoE.
Fair enough! Facts about Guo Huai's weapon, but my goodness do you find his coughing like appealing? It just needs to be dialed down, maybe he's a character who constantly smokes instead and thats why he coughs, that'd be cool. But everything else you said, fair points for suree, at least the older characters got better! Xin Xianying got's hope, hopefullly lol
@@TheNightowlGaming Ehh, I agree that his coughing is over the top, but a lot of DW characters just fall into a trope that is overdone to death to the point of getting annoying, so I don’t mind it that much more than others. Like take Ma Chao mentioning justice every other word, Zhu Ran talking about fire, Zhang He talking about beauty, Guan Ping talking about his father, etc. So I don’t mind the coughing that much. I like that they incorporated some historical events into his persona (he was sick during Cao Pi’s coronation and during the early stages of Mt. Ding Jun), that he was one of Wei’s best generals, was fiercely loyal in contrast to a lot of other Jin characters, and has a fun weapon.
I think Cai Wenji is a fun character! I just think what they could do with her is make her a character who just wants the return of the Han in a similar way to DiaoChan. It would give her a reason to serve CaoCao beyond just being rescued by him and maybe she could plot and defect in a later part of the story as she grows to see him for what he truly is.

Diaochan according to the encyclopedia was born in 176 and CaiWenji in 177. Both of them were in the capital at the same time and both were gifted performers with fathers with political aspirations in direct opposition to DongZhuo.

If I may interject, There actually is proof of them having a sort of friendship in one of the games as in Dynasty Warriors 7 extreme legends, if you play as either Diao Chan or Cai Wenji and have the other as an ally in battle, reinforcements for a battle, appoint them as your advisor to your town in legends mode or have them as an enemy officer or commander, they have unique interactions and dialogue with you. If I can remember correctly, If you have them both at maximum friendship and if they’re the enemy, they will show remorse about being forced to fight against you and will not be aggressive towards you even if it’s a battle where they are supposed to fight you aggressively. They will still attack you and be aggressive to any other officer, but not specifically to you.
Cheng Pu got done dirty. He was a main side character for Wu and he got stuck in DW9

List is kinda off. Where is likes of Xin Xianying? Wise old lady of Jin who saw through likes of Zhong Hui? Instead she is young hottie with aloof persona who doesn't participate in Jin campaign? (she is literally her father as an addition and timeline not her infamous elder self). Loli Dong Bai who gets a pass but Loli Xiahouji doesn't? When her debut and storyline was literally all just a dream lol. Xiahou Ba? he debuts but as neither Wei or Shu character lol. Oh and then there are the likes of Xu Chu, Wei Yan and Zhang Jao and what they did to THOSE lol
Some of these characters were just really close to source including likes of Cai Wenji who after popularity in Strike force was heavily requested to cross into DW proper despite lack of material to go on. She was an adored poet and Cao Cao bought her from captivity but she was at least in the book (unlike many not on this list). Why do likes of Lu Lingqi get a pass? She not only added nothing to the fore but her inclusion has actively pushed Diao Chan out of the narrative.

Also, I was looking at DW4+ cause I consider DW3 to be the base, cause thats the game i started with plus back then it would be hard to say if they had a rough start cause we didnt really know the characters that well. Not sure if you ever play Warriors all stars but Zhou Cang was pretty cool in that still had the speed thing and Guan Yu obsession. But he was less annoying and moveset was actually really good as it used a version of his moveset he would have had if they didn't change the combat in dynasty warriors 9.

I think Koei want to make Yue Jin & Li Dian to be the Gan Ning & Ling Tong of Wei (even more so in He Fei where they made the trio of Zhang Liao, Yue Jin, Li Dian be like a counterpart for Lu Meng, Gan Ning, Ling Tong), it just they did it half-heartedly it makes the Wei one dynamic don't hit the same as the Wu one, especially on Li Dian's part

I hope they add yan liang and wen chou. And of course yan shao should have a story of his own. I think they should have completely new reimagine scenario story mode like what if guan yu serve cao cao instead, pang tong serve sun quan and eventually one on one battle of dragon vs Phoenix against zhuge liang. What If Lu bu alive after xia pi (if player choose not to kill him) and become a lone wolf bounty hunter stalker nemesis type that pay by certain kingdom to hunt player where he up in pop up random stage.

For all of the characters on this list I agree that they all were disappointing when they debuted but, with the exception of those from DW9, some of these characters I have warmed up to a bit more.
Basically, I can some every DW playable character up into 1 of 3 categories:
I will play...
1. Yes.
2. Maybe.
3. No.
With each new game and subsequent new character, I will play a few time both campaign and in free mode to test them, as any DW player will do. With these characters on your list I would put all of them into:
1. Ma Dai.
2 . Cai Wenji, Bao Sanniang, Li Dian, Guo Huai.
3. Zhu Ran, Zhou Cang, Hua Xiong, Han Dang, Xiahouji.
For those in 1, Ma Dai has definitely grown on me over the years as has his move set.
For those in 2, they are mainly here due to their weapon and moveset rather than story or personality.
For those in3, well, they are a play to max level sort of thing then never again. Future games need to do better with them, but with the track record of how some characters have gone I'm not sure if they will change.
I can respect that, also I agree Ma Dai grew on me to, not cause of weapon, I like his development, I think he became more important in dw9 and that was cool

This video is old but I have an Idea to make Han Dang Work. Han Dang has a decent career and I like that he is older so what they can do is turn him into a guy living from his old glory days. People do not respect him as much and he still thinks he deserves that glory but it had been too long to be connected to it. Then during one of his major battles they should hype him up again doing a great feat to get that old military respect back he once had. I think it would still be similar to the character today but in a much more different perspective.

Maybe I would also include Ding Feng, who was added in DW7, yet played literally zero role in story, had a weird personality and kept saying some cringy poetry-like stuff...
And also I would 100% add Guan Yu's children, all but Guan Ping. Guan Suo is just poorly designed, completely hollow personality-wise and the only role he played in DW7 is him surviving Fan Castle battle. Also, nunchaku sucks. And while Guan Xing didn't even have anything like that, the only role he got is "Oh, I will avenge my father" and that's it. He also got one of the worst movesets in the series.
Guan Yinping is a cutie, but man, I hate her personality. It's almost like she is there just for a meme. The way she breaks stuff with a finger touch, etc. Also, zero role in the overall plot. Guan Suo, Guan Xing and Guan Yinping are just irrelevant.

Guan Suo could always go for a 'Tenchi Muyo' route with his wives (Bao Sanniang, Hua Man, Wang Yue, Wang Tao) ; all personal and political marriages (Bao Sanniang exception as she rescues him) with all the wives competing for affection but never letting it put Guan Suo or the Shu Kingdom in jeopardy.

Thank you for making me relive the cringe that is 98% of this list 🥴 I wanted to love Li Dian so bad - and for a while I did - but then his constant “I’ve got a bad feeling about this” never ended and it’s like, sir, it’s called anxiety - we’re in a WAR, either give us actual solutions or keep your mouth shut. And I lowkey love Zhou Cang. I can see why his introduction was super disappointing to a lot of people and how 1-dimensional he is, but I thought he was a good fluff of personality/humor that Shu DESPERATELY needed. In that same vein, leave Ma Dai alone. He’s doing his best out there with his lil paintbrush - my only problem is that it did absolutely 0 damage, which was rude af to do to a character.

I like Guo Huais weapon. Feels like Mega Man to me and the caughing became a running gag to me kinda. For me Han Dang feels like a buffed farmer they picked up on a random field. Oh and Ma Dai (since i am german) i call him "Pinselschwinger" LUL

I like Guo Huai in terms of the personality; but it's True it is a bit different😅😂. I don't like his weapon, usually change it

Just to be speaking the truth, Zhu Ran, Guan Suo, Cai Wenji, Guo Huai, Bao Sanniang, Li Dian and Han Dang are the least usable characters when I used to play Warriors Orochi 4 especially with their Sacred Treasure of choices.

LOL Those arent cowboy hats. I forget what they are called, but that was actually a style from ancient china to have similar hats to those. And there are non-game related paintings portraying Zhou Cang in those hats. And Ma Dai is portrayed with them in old RTK portraits from that game series.
As for the tropes, yeah they can be annoying, especially to western fans who like things to be less campy and more serious. But there are a set of tropes that developers tend to use for every game and they just mix them up to make them appear more original. Been doing it since the early days of SNES RPG characters and I hear its done with anime. Sometimes, they will take something about a character and greatly exaggerate it, like Zhu Rans famous fire ambush, or Zhou Cang being a fast runner. Its just the style they do to template so many characters to save time.
Yeah I can understand that, there's ways to incorporate without going crazy or picking up a horse lol

Different culture, different sense of humor....I don't like it either, so we are on the same page, but I know why its done in ways like this and so I give them a pass. When my band toured, we went over there to Osaka in the 1980s, and I learned first hand just how different cultural perspectives are in the world, especially between the far east and the far west., What we laugh at makes them raise and eyebrow and vice versa. Still, I love their people and respect their culture even if sometimes we just don't get it lol!
I pretty much agree with u about all of them, never been a fan of Ma Dai him after finding out he killed my fav Shu Character Wei Yan didn't really like him at all move set was just weird kind of annoying. Guo Huai well, he was a bit of a let down after reading the novel, do like his move set although that's about it.

Yea at first it was Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun but the moment Wei Yan was introduced he's always been my fav didn't like his dw6 moveset loved the other moveset though, Also love that Guan Xing is playable, for Wei my man Xiahou Dun has always been my fav Wei character, Wu's all over the place, Gan Ning, the Sun Jian, then Sun Ce, now Cheng Pu.@@TheNightowlGaming
