Vertical belt was not changed in the video which is behind on the crank gear so it must be replaced before the horizontal belt. Exhaust pipe removal from the horizontal cylinder is a must (on the 696) to get straight into the vertical belt tightener allen bolt. They strip quite easily at an angle if the pipe is left on and they're $10 each plus the wait of shipping from Italy . Ask me how I know.
Can't use the method with the 5mm and 6mm allen key for the older 2v engines as the belts will be too loose, so you have to set them by frequency, use a guitar tuner or Gates(cambelt manufacturer) app on ios or android, hole the mic up to the belt and pluck it with your finger along its longest length, measure the frequency using the app and set the tightness to approx 110Hz for new belts. He didn't show any of this, i doubt he did it using this correct method, probably just the 45 degree twist method which isn't good enough imo.
useless instructions.. you left out all the important bits.. tensioning, torque-specs, reason why the 110Hz method or 5mm Allen-wrench method doesn't apply for this specific model.. etc etc..People end up with a head rebuild if they follow your instructions! You obviously have no clue..
Awesome thanks! Also , , my Ducati 696 is running rich. I changed plugs a month ago and i had to replaced them again today because wasn’t idling and running ruff. I pulled the air filter out doesn’t look bad but im going to replace it anyways. Any suggestions on what could be or any thing i should do next?
It's because a Ducati mechanic usually uses special tools to block the camshafts in certain positions when replacing the belts. (One camshaft is always freed, when positioning the crankshaft on the mark and it can easily be de-positioned when removing the belt.) Since most people don't have such blockers they have to visibly mark the position of belt wheel, belt teeth and (to make sure) engine housing. Draw a line on each end of the resp. belt (meaning 4 lines all together), covering all three components. Then transfer the dots on the old belt exactly to the new belt and replace it exactly so you have the same lines again. When replacing the belt, most often you will need to correct the position of the wheel that moved away from its correct position. If now you don't have a mark, chances a very high to ruin your motor. Also make sure that you don't swap the belts, since the numbers counted between two marks most probably will differ between the vertical and the horizontal belt. And look out for a video explaining how to tighten the belts correctly, since Mana missed that part completely. And, lastly, free your rear wheel, put in a high gear, remove the spark plugs and SLOWLY turn around the wheel counter clockwise. If you made a mistake, a valve will touch a piston and stop you from turning the wheel any further, preventing any fatal damage. If the wheel can be turned around freely a few times, you should be good to go.
That's not 100% correct. Before removing the belts, you must place the mark in the pulleys with the mark in the crankcase, in this way the piston will be in the top dead center. Also the tensioning of the belts is crucial and must be precise, in ducati they use an instrument that measures the frequency of oscillation of the belt
Hi , I am about to buy 696 2010 and they did not change the belts, I am thinking to do it myself after this awesome explanation where can I find the belt on ebay? is there any article number should I check it ? in the video it seems hard to take them of do you need to lose something ?is there any balance that should be count if I loose them?
make sure you label the belts clearly with a bright marker. take your time and it should work out. www.ebay.com/itm/Belt-Drives-Timing-Belt-19mm-70T-BDL-696-Ducati-Triumph/313006515927?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 this is the link i used to get the belts
You missed tensioning the belts and making sure the pistons are at TDC when tensioning. Extremely important for the reasons you mentioned (interference engine, timing is off if the tension is not set correctly). Other people have mentioned this in the comments. bradthebikeboy has a good video on setting the tension on the 2v engines.

Hey, Nurin! I have some trouble with my Ducati Monster 900S 1998, maybe you could help me? Im a complete newbie when it comes to fixing bikes, but i keep trying and learning. My problem is that after I drive for like 5-10min the engine dies. It dies when it gets hot it feels like, and Im not sure if it gets hotter than usual. After it dies, for me to get it back home I have to put the choke fully open and never let go of the gass. As soon as I let go of the gass it dies again. Could it be something wrong with the air/fuel intake? Please help a Ducati Monster Brother out 🤘
it could be a few items. i would work on getting your idle stable first. there is and idle screw that sets your idle. it might be too low. this may be a band aid and could cause your bike to idle high. if that is the case then start working with your air, fuel or compression. valve clearances or fuel or clogged filter. good luck!!
Man wish you made this 2 weeks earlier. Just got my belts changed for $500 at the stealership. Could have just road down to your garage a few miles away lol
Hi ‘ just bought M696 . How i need to know if i need to change the timing belt ? I’m not quite trusty the seller . 😀 He said that 19,000 km he made all the checked up with his mechanic. Now is 22,500 km. I hope you can help me.
@@ManaMotors If you are on the Ducati forums you'll see there's literally no owners who have had a belt break, even when they're 5, 6,7 even 8 years old. If the bike is stood for a couple of years then thats much worse than if its been used regulary, the rubber in the belt excretes minute amount of natural lubricant each time it goes round the pulley almost keeping it supple.
@@urbanfireblade thanks good to know, I asked a ducati mechanic how critical it was and sadly although they dont break, they could stretch. Its an interference motor and if the belts stretch they could lead to the valves to hit the piston leading to a bent valve. found this out on a monster 620 i had years ago. the root cause being an old belt :( $1200 later
Nice work bro- Looking forward to see you do the valve work and the challenges that may be faced. You may just yet inspire me to do my duc scrambler myself!
Sometimes the journey of rebuilding the bike is plenty of motivation. Plus in my experience selling a smaller cc bike tends to get more potential buyers.
For the riding I do - the 696 is more than adequate. In fact, i looked up 0-60 and 1/4mile time for the 1100 vs 696 and the top speed and acceleration times are so negligible as to fall into a "riders race" category. That said, the 1100 does have a wider torque band, so should be more tractable in daily driving...My 696 has only had an issue with power - never. But I'm down a tooth on the front sprocket and not a fatty.
you cut the MOST important thing - tensioning of the belt-
I read you set the tension by the frequency sound of the belts. How did you set the tension?

How did you get the correct tension?
I would think it would be helpful to remove the exhaust, seat and tank cover to provide better access.
How did you get the top Allen key bolt off?
How you measure right tensioning?

Great job man. Very well explained. I just bought a 696 myself and will be following these easy steps! 😃
Glad it helped!
Counting teeth😂😂😂😂 crazy man. There is a oem spots markers😂😂

From where you started counting the tooth in the belt?
Mark the pulls and they tooth then count the teeth in between then mark the new belt with the same spacing
Awesome thanks!

I don't get why i need the marking on the belt if all the timing gears dont move..
