Well, the ONLY difference between hand and mechanical hammering (and I'm not talking about metal drawing; better known as "stamping") is that the latter is measured to give a more specific, tested sound. Hand hammering supposedly gives a more "unique" sound; however, there must be some singularity in auto-hammering as there is still a great range of tonal qualities among individual cymbals.
Just ordered a Mist X ride from them; it's awesome being able to buy a handmade, custom cymbal for the price of a stamped one (Plus most of the big companies reserve the custom order privileges for their endorsing artists, anyway)
lmao the heating and cooling slowing makes them brittle..Its when they drop the cymbal in water after it is fired for a longer period that makes it hard. Correct me if Im wrong. Or just watch the sabian factory tour.
asifineededaname: nah, only the eldest and most skilled are given this job, so they don't do it for very long and are so trained in drummer skills that they can operate their ears to shut and not let too much vibration in.
The name of that "cymbal-playing dude" is Leon Chiapinni, who has tested Zildjian cast bronze cymbals for the past 50 years. I have a 10" A series splash and an 18" A series medium-thin crash, and I wonder if he tested them.....
Damn....my kit had Paiste 302 Cymbals, and they sound decent for beginners. The 18" Crash Ride has a nice ride, and the crash is just as great as the ride. The thing is, they seem to lack in durability, it's been only like since Christmas(Like 6 or 7 months from now) and the Crash/ride has a HUGE crack, and now it sounds like a china. But the sound is as good as any other china cymbal lol
As for the "mass produced (STUFF)" comment... doesn't it suck when things are made more reasonably affordable. I mean, if only they made cymbals exclusively by the traditional methods we could all pay a minimum of $500 per cymbal. And even better: no-one could get paper-thin cymbals (like A's or K's) because the technology wouldn't be available. You're brilliant!! I'm a nostalgic for older times as well... the romance of it... but welcome to the 2K. Wake up ppl. Advancements WILL BE MADE!!
@drumsrule786 yeah They do sound sweet. Zildjian stoped makeing good cymbals. then made them cost about $100 more because the name ZILDJIAN was writen on it. JAKE
Depends how much money you want to spend. Paiste Alpha's are awesome, but i'm more of a Sabian guy. Sabian APX is more high-end B8. but still sound awesome. I would recomend Paiste Alpha, Zildjian ZHT, Sabian APX, and Sabian Xs20. Good luck choosing.
Paiste's are nice. believe it or not, i found most of what i have at yard sales. you never know what u can find for cheap. :) lol... well, at least you wont have to buy a china then.
Cymbals that suck massive balls: Pearls Rhythm Traveller Drum Kit. The Hi Hat cymbals collapsed the first day and the ride dented in less then 1 hour of playing. So i replaced the hi hat with zildjian zbt 14" and and add a z-custom 18" crash. Can't wait to replace the ride.
"So, now we will begin the tour of the factory." "Yay!" 4:58 "...and here is where we keep the finished cymbals-- Were you carrying that massive duffel bag the whole time?" *Runs with bag full of A Customs*
actually Leon Chaiappini has been doing that job for a long time I guess joedrums1 uploaded a vintage Zildjian video from 1990 and he was doing it back then (looking much younger)
4:05 she says "this guy has the best job" ..WRONG!!!!!!! the guy has probably been working there for 20 years and is totally deaf from banging them cymbals all day ! poor guy !
all cymbals become two brother who created zildjian for started and the next years the brother they separed and one of them created an new category of cymbale
haha, I use cracked Amati 16" crash or cracked and half-melted (during the process of repair :P) Istanbul Crash Rock for that trashy sound and it's groovy :D
@ stpepper1138 Kinda strange, I see guitars at yard sales constantly but I've never seen one piece of drum equipment anywhere, maybe they just dont want to sell them that cheap. meh from personal experience (and a friend) BTW, Zildjian cymbals both cheaper and expensive break very easily
I'm all in favor of Sabian. But I can't really say whether or not a brand sucks. In my personal expirience, Sabian is the best deal for their prices and quality. If you want a zildjian to sound desent, you've got to sink a lot of money into it. Some drummers like their cymbals to sound trashy (in a good way), but to me, it just sounds unprofessional to go for a trash sound.
@southpark990 lol yea id have 4 19'' A med thins 4 19'' k dark med thin 1 22'' a ping ride (1 cause it wont crack the way i play it) 1 21'' sweet ride (same reason) 18'' china and 4 14'' a mastersound
I'm drooling over all those shiny cymbals.
I'm amazed by that guy who carves the grooves into the cymbals. This guy must have trained so much !
Now I understand better why cymbals are so freagin expensive. Thanks guys!

I love this video... I suggest the Discovery channel to broadcast this video in "how is it made"... its awesome...
very informative/interesting -- long-time drummer here. Thanks!
lmao the heating and cooling slowing makes them brittle..Its when they drop the cymbal in water after it is fired for a longer period that makes it hard. Correct me if Im wrong. Or just watch the sabian factory tour.
that looks like the best place in the world! especially at the end with all those cymbals on the racks!
I have a 22" K custom Med ride, and I love it
I don't have any Zildjian crashes
hammering is placed by hand, regardless of whether it is a mechanical hammer... and the term is 'turning' not lathing.

5:00
man that is a lifetime supply of cymbals
Damn....my kit had Paiste 302 Cymbals, and they sound decent for beginners. The 18" Crash Ride has a nice ride, and the crash is just as great as the ride. Whoah, she certainly knows a lot about that cymbal craftsman. Is it just me or does she talk about him a lot more than necessary?
That was very cool, but they should show a better cymbal being made, like Paiste, or sabian. Now, those are some good sounding cymbals.
it's hard to believe that cymbals are started from a little circle piece of metal
Nicely put

the rack at the end is awesome.. i dont think my house can take the weight of it though. haha. it would probably fall right through the floor =X
@drumsrule786 yeah They do sound sweet. Zildjian stoped makeing good cymbals. then made them cost about $100 more because the name ZILDJIAN was writen on it.

OH MY GOD! My heart stopped when I saw all the cymbles in the factory at the end!
0:27 > LOL!!
4:05 > xD best job ever (testing drums)
I personally prefer Paiste cymbals, but, it is all just personal preference, everyone has their own opinion. Good Video anyway.
Zildjian A's are legendary.
i've never found one cymbal, or drum at a yard sale. it's really odd because I go to yard sales every summer you'd think I'd run into ONE
Good luck choosing.
hand hamoring sounds so much better. Zildjian stoped doing that so I stopped buying from them. Paiste
2:56 It's beautiful.....
Paiste's are nice. believe it or not, i found most of what i have at yard sales. you never know what u can find for cheap. :)
lol... well, at least you wont have to buy a china then.
I haven't listened to the sounds, but BETTER is a personal opinion.
That tester dude is crazzzyyyyy(good crazy),LOL!!

paiste rude! best cymbal for heavy music!
As soon as "Zildjian" is sponged on, it gets its $500+ price tag
Zildjian is a great cymbal company. As is sabian, paiste, Meinl, and my favorite - Istanbul.
I especially love the mehmet brand from Istanbul
Very interesting..
I like the lathing process the most.
"So, now we will begin the tour of the factory."
"Yay!"

Cool, I never knew 1 cymbal had t go through all that
sabian does it too their hhx line sounds amazing
i Love how they say these cymbals are being made in Turkey, but at 4:20 it says "Made in USA"
wow
ID LOVE TO HAVE THAT GUYS JOB
4:05 she says "this guy has the best job" ..WRONG!!!!!!!
the guy has probably been working there for 20 years and is totally deaf from banging them cymbals all day ! poor guy !
all cymbals become two brother who created zildjian for started and the next years the brother they separed and one of them created an new category of cymbale
i wanna see sabian cymbals mainly because of the wierd ridges on the surface
Cool!
haha, I use cracked Amati 16" crash or cracked and half-melted (during the process of repair :P) Istanbul Crash Rock for that trashy sound and it's groovy :D
wow this is cool
I use turkey cymbals, lots of protein and less fat than red meat.
it's weird that they didn't do Sabian since they usually choose Canadian companies.
man, i would love to break into that joint!
Yeah I love my Sabian cymbals too.
thats a good video
i'm gonna try that at home .... JK could be cool if you can build YOUR Cymbals when you break it" well, i'm gonna make a other one ..." lol
after seeing the video of this and the ones from sabian i am glad i play aax's. Sabians have much less machine work and more done by hand.
yeah, the way I look at it is all of the three major cymbal makers make good cymbals, and they also make bad cymbals.
@Neji1210 Both Zildjian and Sabian are equally good. the owners were brothers a long time ago.
haha, the guy with the best job in the place is probably damn near close to deaf.
Using machines =/= mass producing something.
4:23 WTF I didn't even know that was possible that's so legit
I just found out he's been there for over 40 years......WOW.
Trademark Turkey....Way to go
it's expensive because of all the hand work. all those steps was just to make ONE cymbal.
I love Custom A's =D
Wouldn't someone know the secret formula if they ran a Zildjian cymbal through a mass spectrometer?
5:56!!!!!!! So many cymbals!!!!
@ stpepper1138
Kinda strange, I see guitars at yard sales constantly but I've never seen one piece of drum equipment anywhere, maybe they just dont want to sell them that cheap.
meh from personal experience (and a friend) BTW, Zildjian cymbals both cheaper and expensive break very easily
wow since 1623
so really Zildjian cymbals should be the best of the lot...then sabin then piaste
People dint realize how much money it takes to drum. *looks at my broken cymbals... Sigh
Meinl Cymbals forever to me.
Ba Dum Tsss.
They squeeze them with a press.
interesting!
my 18" zildjian a custom rezo cracked.thanks zildjian!
Looks simple and quick, so why are the so expensive?
it's dumbed down for canadians
this is a canadian show

how manyyy"""!!!! I WANT THEM!!!!
So...I'm buying my "new" cymbals "used" because that dude tests them?! UNFAIR PRICING! xD
Wuhan's have the best cymbals! hahaha
i like there china's though.
@dazedanconfuzd Really? I knew it at least had to be a different part of the US. Canada eh? I wonder why the lack of contractions?
the giuy who does the quality control must be half deaf by now surely??
and you with them !
@southpark990 lol yea id have 4 19'' A med thins 4 19'' k dark med thin 1 22'' a ping ride (1 cause it wont crack the way i play it) 1 21'' sweet ride (same reason) 18'' china and 4 14'' a mastersound
do you know how many cymbals made zildjian, paiste or sabian by year?
now i know why zildjian is too expensive...
imagine, that was zildjian... paiste's factory would be more amazing hahaha
Who else thought the laser was cool!?
@justinlovespastry that must mean light sabers are real.
why is there a different narrator for the exact same thing on the discovery science channel version?
oh thats way these are soo expensive. The more you know
SHINY!
World's oldest company.
Saluda kicks Zildjian's ass =P those do look nice though
lol @0.35 - 0.45 !!! look at his arms go :)
AVEDIS CUSTOM RULZ FOR EVER !!!!!!
sabian is the only company with hand hammering cymbals
zildjian never do that
