Fun fact: When they made this, on a shoestring budget, they didn't know about using sugar glass for breaking windows, so everytime they break a window, it's real glass breaking. Also, the car in this is the director's actual car, and makes an appearance in every movie he makes.

@Brittany Reusser They made a student film called Within the woods, with almost no budget. Somehow they, The Rami Brothers, and Bruce Cambell, convinced their friends and relatives to invest in the production of The Evil Dead. You have the correct movie and version. This is one of those movies where how it was made is as fascinating as the movie itself. There are a handful of movies in my lifetime that were made by a few "film students" with almost no cash and the movies went on to become instant hits and ultimately classics: Night of the Living Dead, The Evil Dead, Clerks, and The Blair Witch Project. The Evil Dead took years to film because they kept running out of money. HEY, before I forget, when you watch the sequel... they couldn't get the "rights" to footage from the 1st movie for a "recap" at the beginning of the 2nd movie, so they did a rewritten recap, and re-filmed certain scenes. So, don't be confused at the beginning of the sequel. You are seeing a "recap" of the 1st movie. The sequel is just as good as the 1st movie.

So lets look at what happened here. A bunch of kids who had training but no experience, raised funds by themselves from West Michigan sources, the bulk of which from a consortium of Dentist, and travel to Western TN to make a movie. What they produced was a small gem of a masterpiece. Sam lite, composed, and shot every frame and he had a true star in Bruce Campbell. It is as innovated a film you can make on a $1.25. To me it is, as all great horror films are, a great deal of fun. The sequels don't approach it. "Are these damn plants about to rape somebody" same thing I thought the first time I watched it. He's a master storyteller and funnier than you'd believe (but he has been appearing for a long time, so he's definitely learned the craft). The behind-the-scenes info on Evil Dead is really incredible....like when the actors wore the white contacts they couldn't see anything and they were in a lot of pain (contacts were WAY primitive back then) so every move had to be rehearsed a lot before they went for a take, because they were acting while essentially blind.

I believe some of the prosthetics were different actors because Raimi's friends were too busy to come back. They lost the original necklace at one point, and had to paint a gold replacement. I forget which sequel Alfred Hitchcock financed.

I first saw this on TV back in the mid 1980s when I was a teenager. It was the middle of the night, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I couldn't take my eyes off the TV, because I'd never seen ANYTHING like this before. I'll never forget how those howling demon sounds filled my bedroom, and to make matters worse, we lived in a quiet wooded area similar to the setting of the film. Your reaction was great, and you're correct to call this an absolute masterpiece in film-making. "The Evil Dead" still fascinates, inspires, and scares the @#$Q% outta me!!

It definitely makes you stand above most other reactors!
Also, since you mentioned The Ring, you should watch the original from 1998, it's much scarier imo (more weird/surreal and more subtle with its sound design and eerie look)

Actually a student film with a very low budget now considered one of the best horror / splatter movies of all time with some of the best gore effects ever (all manually prepared), great score and sound effects, fantastic cinematography etc.. This just shows the level of the talent Sam Raimi and his crew had / have.

Looking at the comments, all I have to add is that the team on this film was AMAZING. If you follow their careers, there's a lot of notables from a small scrappy student team. They helped each other professionally when the got to Hollywood, and did well (except for when they didn't). Other than that, TIGHT shooting schedule . . . shoestring budget . . . good, comedy-horror sequels . . . Cabin in the Woods.

There is actually a musical too. Evil Dead the Musical is one of my favorites and I definitely recommend listening to it. It's a mixture of the first and second movie so it is more of a horror comedy. Most performances of the musical have a splatter zone as well.

MellVerse this movie has two aspect ratios, 4:3 and 1:85.1 but it was shot in 4:3. The laserdiscs/DVDs decided to crop the 4:3 image into a widescreen format because of the rise of 16:9 tvs.

To get the shot of through the cabin at the end, a camera was attached to a dirt bike and they drove through the cabin. The other shots like it are a camera mounted to a board with handles and operators running through the woods holding on. I hope you watch the sequels. ED 2 is essentially this with a budget and more of a focus on the insanity stuff. Army of Darkness is just Bruce Campbell cheesy goodness.
