For decades, The Pomp Room ruled South Dakota as a venue for local & national musicians (Aerosmith, blink-182, GWAR) -- and a place for the wildest patrons in the area. It hosted chaotic shows for all ages with squishy carpet and no natural light. The happenings both onstage and backstage have become legend. Now, it's time to tell the full story. Cheers!

I only went there a handful of times, but I loved it each and every time I went there. My friend and I got in there on a DEAD ASS Monday night, both underage, and the only 2 people in the place, watching a band called The Lobsters. Good night. They played what we asked them to and they bought us drinks for hanging out with them. We had a lot of fun that night. Thanks for the memories in this documentary.

I miss it every weekend. Most fun ever!! We lived the greatest lives ever there and it was home. 🤘🏼I can still hear Johnny scream “GET THE FUCK OUT!! when the ugly lights came on. 😂

My band Touchstone opened for Head East at the Pomp in 1985. Sad to hear it’s no longer there.
What a great documentary! I spent many a fun night at the Pomp Room! Fell down the steps towards the front. Drank a whole bottle of Jagermeister with Wayne Estrada. Was there for Aerosmith and also the last night. That was a great place. So many good times and great people there!!
Shit always got drunk and tripped on the 2 x 4 or whatever it was between the front bar and then the stage
Great documentary about a place I loved. I was there at least once a week for ten years. I got a chuckle from some of the stories told, because most of them were kept clean for the kids. Unless you were there to witness it for yourself, you would never believe what happened there. RIP, Pomp Room.

I got there once or twice. I was only 21 in 1993 just before they closed. But got to watch Violet and Janitor Bob. I went to high school with Pat in Janitor Bob. It was a lot of fun.
This is a story that has been realized by a lot old clubs in probably every city. The Phoenix Hill Tavern in Louisville, the Antenna Club and The P&H in Memphis, and the list goes on. The 80s and 90s were a special time for live music. Sad it had to grow up and grow old.
Played at the Pomp back in the early -mid 90's. Had many friends in bands that did as well. John was the first guy I ever recall having outboard neve channel strips patched into a old peavey mixer. Was a very unique setup. I also recall the elevator from the roof that we used to load in. What a great room and memories.

Played there many weeks, with two different (Minneapolis) bands in the early 80’s. Sioux Falls was always a fun place to play and the Pomp always treated us real nice. Loved going there. Some great late night after-parties too… 😉

Yeah im from nc and there used to be a place called the ' sound vent ' in thomasville. The only people that knew about it were locals but that place was awesome.

Fantastic movie guys! It knocked quite a few memories out of the self-induced cobwebs. I still have some PTSD about those damn carpets... So many great interviews and so many of those legends that are in the pictures and videos are gone now. Thanks for documenting the debauchery of a legendary rock bar.
this is awesome, so glad it was made. very proud to know them all for years playing in Counter Attack from Mpls on rotation early 80's thru mid/late 80's. Good to see Jon hasn't changed a bit lol, love you buddy. great documentary i have a million storys i could add but i'll just relish them in memory

This is an outstanding documentary. It's still amazing after all these years to think about what an influence this club had and how it was known nationwide by so many elite music acts and TV networks. I am glad I am old enough to remember the Pomp Room. Today's generation will never understand what a glorious time it was back then. Sioux Falls desperately needs a club like the Pomp Room (or Buffalo Chip) to come back.
I went there when Aerosmiths went & played there after the arena. And I saw The band VIOLET with Rich Show. Killer place. Sad when it was no more.

Who remembers the L-shaped pool table in The Pomp? I know local news girl that got laid on that table in the day. I saw Martin Zellar and Son Volt there.

Awesome documentary! Love learning about venues throughout the country that helped the punk/ska/hardcore/metal scene of the 80's and 90's thrive. It's always a shame to lose them.
I loved tomato juice lemon juice and beer for breakfast back when I drank heavily. Sober now. Too much booze will catch up with you!
What a great documentary! Ive never been to The Pomp Room but i think everyone of a certain age went to a similar place which is no longer open. Im in Scotland, and although the Glasgow Apollo was our legendary "great bands, sticky carpet" venue, it was a huge former cinema..... thankfully the more intimate Cathouse is still going strong, bringing new bands to sweaty customers lol!

Great documentary! Never went inside The Pomp Room (I was a child when I lived in Sioux Falls) but the history and legacy is fascinating.

This is a classic documentary! Thank you! Never was at The Pomp Room however I went to some places that were quite similar growing up in the Midwest. Similar places still existed out here in SoCal when I moved out here in the early 90's. Generally speaking, this already was the tail end for these kinds of places before making a slow 15 year descent into oblivion to be replaced by canned music and 50 television screens. I 1st started sneaking into bars in my late teens back in the late 70's to watch the rock bands and soak up all the craziness that usually happened at these late night scenes. My fondest memories are from the similar vibe of these drinking establishments and of course the energy of the live music not unlike what would go on at The Pomp Room. This doc also accurately tells the story about how stylistic changes from dance oriented rock music in the 70's also changed the dynamic of the crowds who came to frequent these places. Laughs and many good times were had!!! By 2008 or 9, most of the live music bars had closed their doors or changed to no more live music when the mortgage recession hit.

I absolutely remember going to the What's Up. Whenever people started jumping, I always half expected for the wooden floor to collapse. You could feel the give.

I love that “half the door” bit! 😂. This reminds me of some of the gigs/joints we played in Indiana in the late 80’s. Such as Gloria’s East End Lounge in Gas City. 😝

PLAYED THERE.... towards the end. LOST HORIZON, JOHN DOE we did band pics there one afternoon next to buckwheat zydecos bus...( E s wife did them) shared mgmt w/ Crash Alley. classic bar.

I'm the same age as Jon and I totally get it. Never was at the Pomp room, but there were tons of dive bars like this in the Chicago area with live music and it was a fucking blast. In fact my dad owned one after the place he worked at told him he couldn't drink at work. He said ok, I quit and bought a bar. This was mid 70s

I worked up the street from the Pomp and it just felt so wrong to watch it get torn down. The whole landscape of Sioux Falls changed.

I actually got to rock out at The Pomp Room way back when, Sioux Falls Rocks (or rocked)
I was in a band that played the pomp room, we followed the replacements. Apparently they had local girls giving oral to the band and the managers found out, from then on no non band members in the dressing room. Also new rules limiting the amount of drinking by the band. It was a nice room, good stage.
The 300 bowl Waterford Michigan rocked 7nights bands from all across the country in the mid to late 80s …
aerosmith, closest I've ever been to that band was at costco in lynnwood, they all signed my aerosmith book they just released, Walk This Way, I have a MINT signed by each member low number first pressing... yup, still in the plastic sack they sold it to me in, hale it cost me like $22 tax included... lol

Almost every City had their Jem Dive Bar with great Bands. The DMV had some great ones. Old 9:30 club. Zaxx/Jaxx/Empire. The Bayou. DC Space.

I loved that bar but the bouncers were assholes …they didn’t mention that the bouncers went across the street and killed a guy …my Bondsman’s son …..in the late 80s early 90s if there was a concert the bands would go to the Pomp after there gig….you could always count on the cops waiting for people to leave that bar ..like feeding grounds for sharks !

The bouncers were the BEST!!! They were the NICEST people at the Pomp Room! Only if you were an ass would you have a problem with them, and they'd warn you first. So if anyone got kicked out of there, they deserved it! MUCH LOVE TO THE BOUNCERS AT THE POMP ROOM! ❤

I was a roadie here in Australia, and saw how poker machines, thousands of the fucking things, killed great live venues here, right across the country. Every city over 50,000 people had a great gig, some were exceptional, but those fucking bastards of things, killed it. The owners of the venues were hit with new 'security' laws, one bouncer for x amount of people, fire laws, noise abatement, parking, all these shitty things, fucked it. Poker machines, you don't need the extra staff, or any of the shit laws they brought in. Each state here took a swing at it. 911, we got the fall out from that, then covid. But I was long gone by covid, I'd retired, an old man, with a broken body. But some of those bars, fucking awesome. Pipps, in Brisbane, Bondi Lifesaver, in Sydney, Corner Hotel, in Melbourne, Largs Peir, in Adelaide, Hernando's, in Perth. Shit fucking hot, tear arse rock and roll. Some stunning bands. All memories now.
