  • @orbyfan
    @orbyfan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Their only road win came in their second-last road game, 5-3 in Oakland vs. the California Golden Seals. The Caps actually ended the season with a 1-game winning streak, beating the Penguins 8-4 in the last game of the season on April 6.
    This team was notable for having the second and third black players in NHL history. Mike Marson scored 16 goals and 12 assists in 76 games, while Bill Riley played 1 game, with no points. A defenceman named Bill Mikkelson was -82, which remains the league record. Rod Seiling, between playing for the Rangers and Maple Leafs, played with the Capitals in their 3-0 loss to the Canadiens on Halloween, and must have thought he was Rod Serling in the Twilight Zone.

  • @Tomatohater64

    In 1975, I saw the Caps play here in Pittsburgh. Pens won 12-1. Caps goalie Michel Belhumer coughed up a quick 7 goals. Ron Low relieved him and allowed 5 more. Their goaltending blew chunks. I'll never forget that game.

    • @Rockhound6165
      @Rockhound6165 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      According to Hockey Reference, Lowe gave up the 7 and Belhumeur gave up the 5. Not that it really mattered. Incidentally the Pens made history that season blowing a 3-0 series lead to the Islanders in the playoffs.

    • @Tomatohater64
      @Tomatohater64 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rockhound6165 The Caps must have pulled Belhumer after 5 goals instead of 7 - please excuse the specifics of my memory 47 1/2 years after the fact. And I listened to game 7 as Chico Resh outdueled Gary Inness in perhaps the Pens' only truly important game from 1967 - 1983. Cried my eyes out when Nystrom scored the only goal of the game with just 5:18 left in the third period. Ahhhhh, the hopes and dreams of a twelve-year-old all dashed to hell. 🤣🤣😁😁😃

    Forgot to mention Scott Stevens and Kevin Hatcher to help out on the blue line. Then, towards the end of the 80s, one of the better trades brought Calle Johansson, Mike Ridley, and Kelly Miller to the district.
    In regards to acquiring Hunter, the pick Quebec got turned into Joe Sakic.
    Along with Bondra, Dmitri Khristich was a prospect. He didn't pan out like Bonzai. A little trivia: I believe Khristich was the last Cap to wear 8. Until that Ovi guy came along.
    Yeah, if you haven't figured it out yet then yes, I am a Caps fan.
    At least they haven't given me 14 straight years of losing, and in a current rebuild state (that is the Orioles for the uninitiated).

    "It's hard to believe that any team in any sport can do that bad in any season".
    I'd like to introduce to you the 1976-77 Tampa Bay Bucaneers. 0-14 in 1976, 0-12 before winning their first game in 1977(2-12). Yes, they lost their first 26 games in existence. Shut out 11 of 28 games(including their first 2 games ever and 4 out of 5 games in a stretch in 1977). In 1977, before exploding for 33 points in week 13 winning their first game against the Saints, they scored a combined 53 points. Yes, 53 points in 12 games(a 4.4 ppg average). In short, as bad as the Caps were in 1974-75, the 1976-77 Bucs make them look like the Canadiens. The difference is, as awful a start that Bucs team had, by their 4th season they ended up 10 points from the Super Bowl.

    • @idontgivetkachuk
      @idontgivetkachuk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They were so bad. They were set up to fail from the start. The fact teams were able to protect basically their whole roster didnt help any team.

  • @31terreri
    @31terreri 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Capitals made a lot of bad early moves in that first season but it wasn't all their fault. They lost out on available talent to the WHA and the expansion draft was extremely weak that year. The NHL did make some changes to the expansion rules going forward because it was clear that the table was badly tilted and it didn't give new teams a chance to be competitive. As for the goaltending, the Capitals weren't able to acquire any prime defenders. All were past their prime or injured so their goaltending was badly overmatched. It wasn't that the goaltending was bad, rather they didn't have the necessary talent in front of them to give them a chance to hold games close. All of players had very high minus numbers in their plus/minus stats. They were doomed from the start and with no access to european or WHA talent they were screwed.
