    When people say a bike doesn't have any "character" what that actually means is there's no corky flaws. If that's what people call boring then sign me up for something boring I guess a Porsche 911 is boring also because it just works. I don't want a bike with "character" I want a well made machine that does what I want it to and does it well. If I want something with character I'll go watch a comedy stand up show. I absolutely adore this bike. And once I'm done selling my house I plan on buying a base model in the gray sometime in early 2022 If not by late December of this year. I currently ride an MT09-SP and it's a great bike I just want something a bit more refined and mature and polished, but also with a bit of dad strength for the highway pulls when I do feel a bit frisky.

    Another great real world review. I don’t understand all the track focus reviews around super nakeds. Tim reviews these bikes were they will spend most of time on the road not sure why anyone would buy one to do loads of track days. Putting the Ducati last is going to upset a few but as a road bike that runs super hot has a very short range no fuel gauge or cruise control and looks like a crashed Panigale I agree. I also bought the Super Duke.👍

      People buy them for the track so they have something comfortable and fun on road and something they can a,so use at the track 5-6 times a year without having a dedicated track bike.

    My fave order when I tested them was:
    1) s1000r
    2) super duke r
    3) Tuono V4
    4) speed triple rs
    But some of this was swayed by the fact I already have an angry twin cylinder and want my second bike to be a bit different...
    My order for the BMW has now been placed 🙂

    Just discovered your channel and really am enjoying your reviews. I have an unusual comparison question. I have a 12 BMW F800R. Love naked bikes and wanna stay with BMW, so I am trying to decide between the S1000r and the R1250r. Have you spent any time on the R bike? Is there a big difference in riding position/comfort between the 2?

    Not sure which lithium battery BMW uses. I put an Anti Gravity lithium in my 2022 s1000r sport and can leave it sitting for two months with no issues when starting the bike.

    With you 100% Tim. I test rode the S1000R a couple of months back and thought it was an awesome piece of kit. Stepping across from my 'ickle 790 Duke it felt pretty bulky around the midriff, but very light and nimble on the move. Definitely a more sporty riding position.
    My test bike was identical to yours and the forged wheels made a lasting impression. I was dreading negotiating the big roundabout that leads out of town, but they made the steering sooooo light and easy that it caught me by surprise. I'd be ticking that options box for sure.
    Engine is so smooth. Almost electric. And I loved the massive display. Great bike, but I'd kill myself on it 😂

    It’s always nice to get a none typical/echo review. I’ve unsubscribed from many motorcycle reviewers because they all just say the same lame thing. I test rode the s1000 and your review mirrored my experience. The bike sounds amazing even scary at times. It totally has a Jekyll and Hyde personality. The S1000 can be a very sensible bike when commuting/touring but can go completely mad above 6k rpm. Versatility is why the S1000 series (IMO) is one of the best lines of motorcycles ever.

      Thanks! (And sorry for the late reply). Yeah, it surprised me because the S1000XR really did feel characterless and just not my bag at all. The single R though was mega.

    I think the reason for the quickshifter feel is that they use a stretch guage to allow better fine tuning of the shift at all engine speeds, but it does result in that slightly less mechanical feel as you say....

    I've had a BMW F900 for two years now, and will probably get a litre naked next year.
    It's my first BMW and I've been so impressive by how well it does the boring, day to day stuff that even though this might not be the most exciting option, I've just been so impressed by how good the general BMW ownership experience has been that it's going to be hard to look past this.

    • @timrodierides
      @timrodierides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure really - the Speed is firmer, and I think in the chase for power the triple's lost a lot of its character. The S1000R had a hooligan side that the Speed Triple didn't (you have to turn everything off on the Triumph to do wheelies, for example).

    I bit the bullet and traded my 2018 bike. Hated this model even in M trim. Mega underwhelming. After 2500 miles I traded it last month ... losing £1500 was irrelevant. The previous model was far more exciting. Lesson for me - never trust the magazine testers lol. Nice review

    Have BMW sorted out the buzz through the bars and foot pegs that the previous gen suffered from? I preferred the look of the previous gen with the asymmetric headlight. Thought it looked great on this bike as a naked, but not on the S1000RR. I agree with you that the SDR is probably still the best super naked. Wouldn't it be great if Triumph put electronic suspension on the 1200 Speed Triple RS and gave it a more compliant road mode ride.

    • @jmacknet2
      @jmacknet2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Improved but not eliminated. They changed the gearing in 4-5-6 so the engine doesn't rev as much when cruising. I think they also tweaked the rubber handlebar dampers and bar end weights. On my first ride of the new one I noticed the vibes, but once I adjusted my position and loosened my grip I can't say I've thought it was vibe-y since.

      I've got the 2019/2020 s1000r & yes it did buzz through the hand-grips. I had to get weighted bar ends to minimize the vibrations. It did the trick. I'm now at 11,500km's and no issues with engine/electronics etc. No buzz through the foot pegs. In my opinion BMW did miss the trick with new models. It should have 175hp as a minimum. Considering the s1000r engine is de-tuned from the big brother s1000rr, having 175hp would be simple for the BMW engineers. The biggest drawback is the lack of torque. You need torque down low & all the way through the rev range just like KTM has done with its SuperDuke. Having said all that, I've no regrets with my s1000r. It's a right peach & I'm a 100% road user not interested in track days (too expensive). For the money you get a hell of a lot of bike. I'm a previous Aprilia Tuono owner and the s1000r is the better 'every day' naked. If you're keen to buy one @alex morgan, take one for a test ride it won't let you down. If you have the cash, its KTM SuperDuke is my choice, all day & twice on Sunday, but for the price you get the BMW s1000r, it's a hell of a lot of bike that will keep you grinning ride after ride after ride.

    • @alexmorgan3435
      @alexmorgan3435 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@abcdefghijk5095 Sorry no S1000R for me. I'm not going to spend that kind of money on a giant vibrator ;@). Yes KTM SDR 3.0 is a very good bike, but I went for a Speed Triple 1050RS instead as Triumph have better reliability. It has more than enough power for the roads, lots of low down torque. The fully adjustable Ohlins suspension is sweet and Brembo brakes awesome. The howl of the triple engine is addictive. Happy days.

    Great real world review of a great usable everyday super naked. Funny what you said about the quickshifter. Chris from 44 teeth said it was probably the best in the business so a slight difference of opinion there. I am going to look [and try to blag a test ride] at one since I am in the market for a new bike this year. I did not like the headlight at first but I have got used to it now and think it looks ok. I prefer the red colour to the others but that's just my opinion. Anyway keep up the great reviews and ride safe.

      had this exact same choice to make. ended up going with the s1000r. test rode both of the bikes, the v2 was an absolute great bike to ride, but to live with its a lot to deal with. the seating position is aggressive so if most of your riding is canyons, it would be a great bike to go with. the s1000r had MILES better tech, more neutral seating position (still moderately aggressive) and better real world application. remember you can always ride a bike however aggressively (throttle wise) as you want.

    Agreed the KTM probably deserves to be the king still. I was massively disappointed in that front headlight from BMW when they released it, what a boring thing to do. They could have made the front look amazing or at least different, like the other brands have done but sadly no. There were some great CGI concepts being posted about online with a front end like a naked version of the RR. If only BMW had done that. The rest of the bike looks great, less the ugly welding.
