Top Ten Iconic Toonami Anime

  • Toonami was a staple of anime anime fan growing up in the late 90s and 2000s. After covering some of the forgotten hits or short-run anime broadcast on the block, it’s time to cover the other end of that idea. We’re looking at the most iconic anime of the block. Not so much the most well-known of every anime they’ve shown, but rather the anime that felt synonymous with the block. These are the anime that got all the reruns since they were just so popular, or at least stick to our memory the most from nostalgia. Judgment Meter joins for this one, too.

Sailor Moon was VERY popular in its pre-Toonami run. However, it wasn't granted the best time slot in most of its regions by local channels (it aired on the same channels that aired the Disney Afternoon, so it was either relegated to coming on before that block at 2:30pm, which most kids were still in school or just getting out. OR early mornings at 5:30am or 6am.)
The only thing that stopped it is DiC only dubbed it up to the middle of the Dark Moon Clan arc. They only go up to where the Spectre Sisters get healed and then the series restarted. So there was no big fight with Rubeus and we don't even get introduced to Prince Diamond and the rest of them. So, basically, only half of the series got dubbed. And that's ALL that was dubbed until Toonami finally commissioned for it to be completed in 1999.

theres a Viz dub you know it's way better that is unless you like cheesey nineties localized anime😅

    • @jerfuhrer2581
      @jerfuhrer2581 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@ianbrooks3597 I'm aware of the Viz dub. But.....that wasn't available nor what made Sailor Moon popular in America in the 90s. The Viz redub is from 2016. And, honestly, I like both. I don't see a problem with the DiC dub, as I wasn't really a "subs only" purist growing up. Nor do I let everyone else talk me into thinking something is bad because it's "cheesy." Sailor Moon, by design, is cheesy, so that argument doesn't make sense. Yes, it was edited down for censorship reasons, but it still mostly respected the show and gave great performances. Honestly, there are some things I feel each does better than the other. For example, the DiC dub gives each episode a new title, which doesn't spoil what's happening in the episode. In the DiC dub, it's called "Day of Destiny" and in Viz/Japanese it's called "Final battle: The Tragic Deaths of the Sailor Senshi!" It just gives me a little bit more mystery so big moments hit harder. Speaking of that episode, if I'm watching the DiC dub, I HAVE to watch the final 2 episodes of the Dark Kingdom arc in the Viz dub, so I can see the whole battle. HOWEVER, as soon as Sailor Moon's battle with Endymion is over, I HAVE to go back to the DiC dub for the final showdown with Beryl/Metalia! It's not as long, but it feels so much stronger to me! Also, I think the DiC dub is funnier than the Viz dub.

Really like you delving into your thoughts and a lot of history of these show's Toonami run and yeah feels weird thinking back on stuff like The Rising Sun and Midnight run remembering wow Toonami had so much presence on Cartoon Network for at least like a good 5 years. And as a huge Toonami fan from back in the day allow me to go over my own thoughts and feelings on these shows.
    10. Cyborg 009 - Apparently June 2003 was a big Shotaro Ishinmori month for CN back in 2003 because not only did Toonami debut Cyborg 009, but Adult Swim meanwhile was debuting Kikaider on weekdays which was such a weird dynchomy because though both shows are made from the same creator and have his same design (well the original take on these shows/manga anyway) and are about evil companies who mix humanity with artifical life in some form... both had vastly different tones. The Original Kikaider series AS ran was much more a slow burn about asking questions and not as much about the big fights and more about the slower paced drama and though AS would also air an OVA of Kikaider that was more action packed it was the actual series people had some appreciation for before it had that more heavy action. Meanwhile Cyborg 009 was much more about the action and the speed of what was happening especially in it's first couple of episodes and only later would it start delving more into the characters. Though it's action oriented focus made sense why it went more towards Toonami though I think some of the dubbers may not have originally known that or thought it was going on some version of the midnight run cause yeah if you were there when the show first came out, there was actually a controversey due to it showing some blood and having more minor swearing which you didn't really see in the weekday Toonami run. Like maybe it was a rush job on the dub (this is also the dub where Joshua Seth voiced the main lead 009 but couldn't in two episodes for some reason so got pretty weirdly replaced by someone else's voice in them) but I do remember that causing a stir and maybe another reason it's second season got moved to late Friday nights. Either way I do remember enjoying the show though yeah even at the time I felt it had issues. The animation could be cheap and rushed at times and this wasn't like a major shonen series adapating super long arcs or anything and was pretty episodic at points so that's even more noticable. Also this is one of those team shows that really do put a lot of focus on it's main hero as a deterrement when he's one of the least interesting characters but also has one of the most broken powers. Like I much preferred say 006 or 007 or even more somber characters like 004, but 009 had that accelerate power that like a lot of the other villain cyborgs had to have to stand a chance at first so got too much focus. Also though I really like her character 003 is one of the biggest cases of "girls club having worst powers" series I've ever seen as she just gets the super sensing powers. That'd be like if in the Fantastic Four Sue Storm just always had invisiblity powers; That's cool for some missions but if that's your only thing it's lame. I'm not sure if I would rate Cyborg 009 a big series for Toonami considering it only ran half of it's episodes there and even in terms of later weekday series was overshadowed by the likes of say Ruouni Kenshin but was certainly a decent series and one I do have fond memories of. Much more then...
    9. Ronin Warriors - Not going to lie; of all the series lisited here this was the only one I remember never really watching any as a kid. I don't know why but a lot of the boys Power Ranger esque team up shows I couldn't really get into like Voltron and yeah this. At least i remember wanting to watch the parts of Vultron involving the big robot though but nothing clicked to me about this one which is weird as I am huge into Power Rangers (at least it's first few seasons) but didn't really see this one. Then again maybe this was because yeah it was an old school pick that felt like Toonami after getting Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon was moving away from or maybe it's just anime armor series I have a hard time getting into. Didn't really like Saint Seiya/Knights Of the Zodiac though that one I at least remember watching some episodes of while here I don't think I saw an episode in full of this show. I remember there was some woman with a kid and a tiger on the side that just felt like annoying commenting/save me characters and.... they had to upgrade their armor due to tougher enemies at one point but yeah nothing about this one sticks. If you do remember it and it was a big higlight on Toonami for you fair enough but this is my total blank on the list. There's a lot of other Toonami series even if they are more obscure I'd place over this one but I get it if you were a fan.
    8. Zatch Bell - I do appreciate MrTop10list pointing out why this is fits a list more One Piece or Naruto which are such huge series who aren't nearly as tied to Toonami (despite ironically being the big place still on US TV people can watch "new" episodes of those shows) thus why they didn't get the slot despite being bigger catches. And hey to be fair Zatch Bell though not as big a hit as say naruto must of still have been a big enough hit that they actually bothered making full on recap dub epsiodes for to remind people of the story between parts in the season something they also did with Naruto. Like Cyborg 009 there was also a controversey with Zatch Bell at the time it came out but a different kind entirely as yeah this had a huge hatedom for it because of the people pissed this was the show that was replacing Yu Yu Haksho before it had finished it's run and like MrTop10list pointed out went to eventually end it's run on late friday nights. Which wasn't Zatch Bell's fault as YYH just wasn't getting the ratings it was before (more on that later) and this was a new show that they felt would generate good buzz. And honestly I do remember that though there were still some detractors of the show it still being an overall well regarded series which makes total sense as this is a really good show. It is a very unique different kind of "human and monster partner join together to fight others" kind of show as the whole battle for Mamado King stuff allowed for some very unique kinds of characters and fights. I guess this is one of those series where to work a lot of focus especially in the first part is put on all of these random players showing up in Japan cause that's where Zatch and Kiyo live and only later do they take the fight elsewhere but eh most of these one offs and little arcs were good. Sometimes too reliant on shonen tropes of "not believing how far the main character had come" and "randomly getting this power up" (plus the filler episodes usually were bad if they weren't one shots. There's a specific filler episode I hate a lot but that would require too much explaining here to get into) but it works well as there's some great character progression for the main leads and the wacky world around them. And just how out there this show can get which does result in a lot of just uber off beat characters... some are even too off beat to really like looking at or getting into (like that little girl that bullies Zatch or this black lady who looks like a super insensitive uncool stereotype you wouldn't believe would get past in the 2000's but I guess Japan didn't still know better at the time) but there's a lot that are really funny and do have good arcs. From Kanochome learning to be brave and his powers to Ponygon's whole arc of trying to find his partner and the antics that led up to and yeah a lot of good drama as well. Sherry and Brago are some really solid rival characters and Sherry has a great backstory and heck I heard some argue THEY should be the stars of the show but... knowing more of ZB I get why they work for one big story but why Zatch and Kiyo are the stars considering the author's sense of comedy. BTW speaking of author the manga's the only way to see the full story. Sadly the anime didn't do well in it's last season in Japan and thus ended before the manga did thus the anime doesn't have the full story but the manga does and it's a solid way of wrapping things up and yeah ZB did do well on Toonami even if it was taken off the air in season 2 but hey for a weekly series around that time that was still good.
(PART ONE OF SUPER LONG COMMENT END).

      PART TWO
      7. Yu Yu Hakusho - Okay so why was Yu Yu Hakusho first aired on Adult Swim, then on Toonami then eventually taken off Toonami to only air on late friday nights? I think it's because of DVD sales. Like Funimation got Yu Yu Hakusho and though it's first season did well on AS they knew as a shonen series it's main appeal would be to younger kids but due to it's edge they felt at first removing that edge would ruin the show some thus putting it to AS. however when they really started pumping out DVDs of this show hit on an interesting idea; what if they put it back on Toonami censored as a way of promoting it also coming out uncensored on DVD? remember before sites like Crunchyroll sans places like Toonami a big way you saw anime was going to places that sold DVDs and purchasing/renting a few episodes at a time of those long running series. Like that's something I remember me and my friends doing in the late 90's/early 2000's all the time for a lot of various titles and even for series that did air on Toonami because sometimes they came to VHS/DVD first or because they were uncensored like say the Android Saga of Dragon Ball Z. That was especially something we did once Yu Yu Hakusho stopped nearly at the end of the finales of the Dark Tournament arc; we were enjoying it's run on there we started getting all the DVDs of that and Chapter Black and yeah watched them there first before eventually seeing them on Toonami edited down and that obviously provided Funimation with a huge sum of money. Well the unedited DVDs as the edited ones didn't sell as much so eventually Toonami stopped even making them which yeah if you only saw the episodes on Toonami there's a lot taken out or changed that ruin the experience. Not to the extent of a One Piece or anything but either the jokes or violence or even points don't hit nearly as hard so though Toonami is what helped make it more popular I feel the show at it's best worked outside Toonami because yeah YYH is a classic. I loved it from the first episode actually as I love starting out with Yusuke just as this seemingly punk middle schooler who you see a day in the life of then he dies but you're invested in him wanting a second chance and seeing how that leads to all sorts of shennigans and honestly this is a really well paced series. Especially for a long running shonen as this actually doesn't technically have filler (they extend some fights and bits and yeah change some of the ending elements but we're not given pointless plots like a lot of long running shonen do. Heck a lot of the stuff with Yusuke as a ghost from the manga actually ISN'T adapated to the anime probably to get to more the action stuff) and honestly to me most shonen can trace their roots to a mix of DBZ and this as though DB established a lot of tropes, YYH gave a lot of details be it differing kinds of powers and abilities, fleshing out secondary heroes and villains more and really delving into drama a level you didn't see in Dragon Ball. And YYH did it great. There are some minor gripes you have with this being a shonen (characters blathering about differering powers or techniques, over long builds, kind of pointless twists done for the moment that don't make sense in retrospect) but honestly between the characters and fights most of it is great. Like I do have some personal issues (wish Kuwabara my favorite got more wins for instance) but I think the major problem with this series is that it's last arc was super ridiuclously rushed. Like the 3 kings arc had this awesome set up in how it brought so many elements from previous events together but felt like Togashi the manga-ka was like "ehhh I'm not making this some super long 3 pronged war let's do a tournament instead and even then rush through a lot of it" but the rest is really good and is a classic you should check out... again oddly enough not as much on Toonami but still...
      6. Big O - Ah yes you gotta give major points as a Toonami show if Toonami inadvertingly helped actually save it and allow it to continue making episodes. As MrTop10list pointed out this iddn't do well in Japan but in america people really ate up so much of the "Batman plus mystery noir plus giant robot" action and yeah this had a huge push. I actually didn't really see it on Toonami for I don't know what reason but it was all over the ads. Especially music videos like advance robotics that made it feel like one of the big series despite only having 13 episodes and only being able to air so much. But yeah did so well that CN actually helped co produce 13 more episodes that yeah aired on Adult Swim. Granted I would argue that though kids could get into it that it's tone and themes made more sense for AS. Honestly it going to AS and being this big deal is how I caught it and yeah I watched all the episodes. I feel the first season probably is overall better as it has a better mood and focus on this noir world and keeping to that and though more episodic the one off adventures are still good. Season 2 has some really great episodes (the one with comedic villain Jason Beck may be my favorite in the overall series in fact) but it was obviously this trying too much to chase series like Evangelion or Raphexon by trying to have some deep meaning and commentary and got overly confusing and obtuse and meta in it's last episodes that in retrospect don't hold up as well. Still what's great about this show is great and yeah Roger and Dorothy have a great dynamic (I actually had them in characters in old fanfic of mine... which also do no hold up like in retrospect from 20 something years ago) and the robot designs and feel is really cool but I get why after season 2's ending it's not really talked about or has anyone clamoring for more. Cause that 0 Climax was not that satisfying.... yeah had to make one dumb joke like that, sorry.

All those shows made afternoons awesome, No wonder we were rushing back from school. Though, I barely saw Cyborg 009 because I was going through some things at the time and wasn't able to watch TV when it came on. Couldn't finish YYH until years later.
Ronin Warriors was one of the first anime I got into along with Sailor Moon. It used to play on Sci-Fi. Was able to actually finish the show on Toonami. I LOVED the music and the boys were cute, too. I want to learn how to play some of those songs soonish. The Ronin Warriors OVAs were some of the first we bought. They're not very good.
Sailor Moon was a turning point in my queer awakening.
I loved the end theme of Big O.
"And she's like, screw you... I'mma be a lady. In high society." LOL
20:40 gang, it's not that complicated, it's just "Flash" by Queen.

1:14 So jealous of kids now who not only have multiple people to talk about anime with, but potentially the whole world.

They did. I remember being so depressed as a kid cause that dude sacrifice himself to save her 😭 I forget his name cause I am going straight from 25 plus year old memories here but he went from like the most evil cliche henchmen from being one of the best forces for good. That is one of the things that still sticks with me about ronin warriors next to ryo gaining the white form and obliterating talpa at the end of the first half of the show. Damn epic if I recall it now

How is Naruto not in the Top 5? It was literally Toonami's 2nd DBZ from 2005-2008. Also how are Tenchi Muyo & Outlaw Star that high? I can agree with Gundam as #2 & DBZ as #1 as that is really how it was. #3 had to either be Sailor Moon or Naruto with the other being 4th in terms of iconicness. While I can accept Outlaw Star as 5th personally, I feel like Cowboy Bebop has been more iconic showing at least 3 Marathons (1 of which was as a contest winner) & I believe 7 full rerun cycles since the 2012 restoration.
Outlaw Star was only broadcast once all the way through on Adult Swim Toonami & interestingly Big O only broadcast its 2nd Season as part of the AS Toonami which is why I don't remember the 1st Season of it although Season 2 was great the 3 or 4 times it was broadcast. Still Big O is worthy of the #6 Spot. Likewise Yuyu Hakusho & Zatch Bell have their places well deserved as well. I have to say that I didn't remember either of your #9 or #10 pics, although Transformers Armada was an iconic part of Toonami when I was a child.
I don't really think much about the Moltar & Tom 1 Era stuff as I was too young to remember. If Tenchi Muyo were around at all from 2003-2008 or had a better showing than GXP during the Adult Swim revival maybe it could have been iconic. Tom 3 is easily the definitive host & Adult Swim was well aware of that in 2012.
