Satoshi Kon was also a founder of the Japanese Animation Creators Association who have been fighting for better conditions for animators as well as funding Young Animator training programs
The fact that he only has 5 works but is already in the upper echelon of the greatest anime directors is a testament to just how much of a genius he was. R.I.P Satoshi Kon.
"I'm so sorry I didn't bring you in this world with a stronger body" Goddamn man. Those words destroyed me. Despite his illness, she birthed a son with a beautiful mind. I hope their parents can hold themselves up with pride as they hold onto the things he created for the world. Amazing video.
Cool a mother is willing to apologize but not for something like that. Or not something a kid wants to hear. Cancer can affect us all, strong body or not. Nobody has the vision and talent that satoshi had who inspired movies like inception. He has the talent to be up there with Kubrick and Spielberg,
I couldn't help but just laugh out loud because... it is *utterly* alien to myself as a Western culture Canadian. To think in such a way. I find Japanese and other asian nation's concept of shame very fascinating. It is almost relatable in a way, but it seems very intensified compared to ours. To die before one's parents, the thought that that could be a disrespectful thing is unfathomable in a Western style of thinking... I have a hard time grasping it really. But that's the beauty of different cultures in the world.
@@Celestialbeing21 If this is your first time hearing about Satoshi Kon then that's your issue for not knowing, and not the weeb's that you just made up in your mind to blame...
Not only that, but traditional leaves so much more behind after the work is completed. The cels. True pieces of artistic history that collectors hold dear.
I bet if Satoshi was still alive, he would make a great adaptation of Goodnight PunPun. Hell, he’s probably the only one capable of making an anime adaptation of that manga.
Just want to give you credit in an area that gets overlooked. The thumbnail for this video is stupidly well made! The contrasting colours and how clean the images have been blended together. It makes for one hell of an eye-catcher.
I collaged it together myself before starting this project in a full i had a vision of it being like pealing back layers of Kon's work while capturing that atmosphere
Not an artist, but that's how I feel about any work I'm doing. If I screw it up, I know exactly who to blame. If someone else screws up, they're liable to obscure it
I don't know if this was intentional, but the way your narration constantly flits back and forth between yourself and quoting Kon without any indication is really cool considering his filmography.
Hmmm let's say I totally meant it to be interpreted that way haha , I was a little worried some might get confused but I made sure in the subtitle to always make sure people knew if I was quoting
@@Stevem the choice to maintain the same narrative tone but alter the visual to one of an....animatic? of Kon was also rly intelligent & subtle but made the delineation in implied voice distinct & demarcated~
This is not an in-depth documentary. It's slapdash and self-serving, impossible to sort out what one is looking at. Though I'm familiar with many of the works mentioned, I am left with little new information about them, other than the desire to go elsewhere to find out more -- and precious little in the way of clues about how to look for them. Everything in the way of source material is glanced at only in passing. @STEVEM, you love the material. I get that. You know the mechanics of editing; I get that, too. I wish you would partner this love of the material with someone who actually knows how to make a documentary.
In 2006 I think it was. I got to see Paprika at one of it's First Ever Premiers in Washington D.C., at the Cherry Blossom a Festival. And Satoshi Kon Presented it us Attendees. The Reception it got was Great.
I think it's because people didn't know how to process the fantastical when it came out. The reason why Nolan got success from his interpretation was probably because most audiences literally couldn't fathom dream machines and symbolism literally consuming real life. They had to have it simplified into 'we're in a dream in a dream'.
It still is, to me it's the greatest work of animation ever. The idea of animation being this boundless field of creativity and imagery is best encapsulated by the breakneck journey through so many different worlds and themes throughout the movie while somehow finding the throughline that pieces it all together. I think Perfect Blue has picked up a lot of steam in popular culture but Paprika still doesn't seem to have elevated to "must-see" status like Ghibli films have garnered.
the problem with satoshi kon is that we cant have any more satoshi kon films because of his untimely death seriously every time i remember that i get super sad.
Millennium Actress is my favourite Kon movie. I was so heartbroken when he died. I remember how an artist on deviantart drew a tribute to Kon where he was the astronaut at the end of Millennium Actress. Totally broke me. It's been 10 years but I'm still not over his death. He's the only celebrity I've mourned for this long. He an old have lived until 80 or 90. He deserved a long life
@@PureHoney_ASMR Right? I see the similarities and the very clear inspiration that Aronofsky took from Perfect Blue, but to say they are the exact same movie is petty and disingenuous.
I watched Perfect Blue at such a pivotal point in my life and it's been such an inspiration to me, crazy to think he thought it to be his least greatest work. Also, this was so beautifully done, had me in tears at the end.
I'm absolutely delighted that this video was recommended to me. I recently referred a bunch of my friends to Kon's work-the 10th anniversary of his death being a major reason why- and everyone seemed to love the projects they watched. All of his major projects have clearly stood the test of time; it's worth mentioning that the friends I mentioned aren't even all anime fans (some of them even had a slight aversion the medium) yet Kon's work broke through that barrier flawlessly. There aren't many still-working directors/writers in the industry left that have such a strong vision as Kon had (Masaaki Yuasa comes to mind) but perhaps the age of streaming may lead to more of those creators coming to the forefront in the future. This video is an excellent documentation of Kon's creative process and history, paired with some great analysis as well. I really hope that it blows up! Also, a fellow man of Trash Taste I see...
Kons influences were fairly Hollywood based and I thinK that makes him an easier starting point for people who aren't as familiar with anime. He's also a really great film maker in his own rights with a great collection of movies . The trash taste podcast is fun but I found them talking about how the movie effects them more convincing than me saying it considering they are famous , thank you for watching
@@Stevem That's definitely a fair point; his movies are weird as all hell but not weird in a stereotypical 'anime' way. I was pleasantly surprised to see that one of the people who I mentioned who generally disliked anime ended up binging Paranoia Agent in a day and loved it.
I've said it a thousand times about The VVitch and Perfect Blue: when it was over I felt like I had awoken from a night terror, I had to lie down for a while to recover.
The video... just _flows_ The work on this is just insane! I really feel like we passed a milestone on the quality to expect from the channel and the anitube in general.
Among other artists, satoshi kon might be the one whose lifetime works I've almost seen/read all. From his 4 feature films, paranoia agent, the ohayou short film, magnetic rose that he wrote, to the books like dream fossil, tropics of the sea and opus. The man's inspired me so much and I'm so glad you put the time to make this video to commemorate his decade passing and tell more things about him that I'd love to hear.
Thank you so much for making this man. Having been a life long fan and sometimes animator/director now adrift in the horrors of this unending year, hearing this recollection not just of the man's work but of his struggles and his life touches me with inspiration I wasn't expecting, and many a tear in a story I thought I knew. The Satoshi Kon problem remains that his story isn't told nearly often enough, and I'm glad for you helping to rectify such a state. Cheers man, subbed.
It's kind of perverse to say, but the most inspiring aspect of Kon's life is how he died. He had work yet to do, but he achieved what he wanted, was content with his life, and faced death with as much dignity as he could manage.
The algorithm has blessed me by recommending this video to me. The writing and editing in your video essays is superb. That's gonna be an instant subscribe from me. Keep up the amazing work!
Satoshi Kon was a great filmmaker. His art style of depicting realistic characters is timeless and he was well ahead of his time with his ideas. Millennium Actress is my favorite film from him. That introduction song is just so innocent, beautiful, and sad.
I've never been moved to tears in such a meaningful way than by the actual magic that lives within animation. My fervent hope is for true animation to never die out.
He worked with so many of my favorites and I never even knew. Rest easy, Satoshi Kon, such a small number of works but every single one is a masterpiece.
Satoshi Kon is a legendary director. His worst movie is still an 8/10 and his passion in directing and animating are inspirational. His works are so beautiful and tell different stories of people who are heard. We will forever miss him and his legacy will never be forgotten. He is my GOAT and I hope his family and friends are happy knowing that even if he himself left feeling unfinished, he has inspired many and brings joy to those who enjoy animation, and proves that this is not a genre, but a medium that can be used to the fullest. Rest Well.
The first 60 seconds alone made me remember just how much I LOOOOOOOOVE this guy's movies!!! He was so talented, a VISONARY! He passed way too soon... T.T
I hate the fact not a lot of new anime fans don’t know about him. I feel like not a lot of people know him or the work that he did. Kon was such an amazing man, I will forever love all of him and his work
I have now watched every single one of your essays and being an animation director myself I would love to see a film inspired, or completely based on, your way of making these videos. I can’t wrap my head around what the hell it is you do to make them so hypnotic and fascinating! Who you are you? Do you memorize the whole script and then just present it in this way where we feel we know exactly what you’re about to say and what you’re talking about. It’s absolutely brilliant! Keep in this up please! I need more of you and your videos to keep me company while animating through the endless nights.
13:47 Yes! Perfect Blue is more relevant terrying nowdays than back when was released! I am still amazed on how this movie character has become a person that anyone can relate to.
@@danielijust8776 Well, rather than "can" relate, it would be better to say "might" relate. It was a pioneer on cyber-stalking and doxxing far before it's era, and nowdays anyone "can" relate in a sense anyone might go throught the same experiences
I'm sharing this to every fan of animation I know immediately!!! This video was such a labor of love for Satoshi Kon, and the analysis and presentation were great! Great video, Stevem!!
I already knew about his death, but hearing all his thoughts at the end of the video brought me to tears. It's so unfair that such a brilliant man suffered such a horrible and untimely fate.
A really inspiring mini-docu on Kon you've done here. Especially with how you used to the hand drawn segments, it really brought out some emotions in this retrospective. Job well done.
honestly the fact that he's no longer with us kills me me, i always liked his stuff but going back and seeing what he made and realizing how much farther he had left to go *KILLS* me
That's my Millennium Actress cel at 20:58! It made me happy seeing it unexpectedly, you did a nice job touching it up from my not-so-great photo. (One of these days I'll properly scan it!) This was a wonderful piece on Satoshi Kon, I enjoyed it and learned some things I didn't know previously. He is my favorite director and I'll always be heartbroken by his sudden, untimely passing, but I am incredibly grateful for the beautiful works he left behind. I'm so glad he was able to share his artistic vision with us while he was here.
Man this is excellent, your level of research and knowledge of Japanese animation is always phenomenal, but this is straight up enviable! Also, Knocked it out of the park with the roto-sketches too, really visually engaging! I think this is your best video yet, excellent work 👍🏻
I'd been thinking about Kon a bit more since that Trash Taste episode and I couldn't believe it when I saw you put their clip in. Makes me even happier that I've dropped everything to watch this video as soon as I saw it in my recommendations
Satoshi Kon is literally one of my favorite directors of all time (animation or live-action). All of his movies are masterpieces imo. Peak animation right there. He will be missed.
I think Murayama was right on not finishing someone's work as a tribute, considering the reception A.I. had. I know that that film was supposedly Kubrick's vision, but who knows how that film would've turned out if Kubrick could actually finish it.
I bet your cat’s just broken up about Kon’s passing. I really hope this video blows up - you’ve really outdone yourself! The most thorough research and best editing in the game, good luck being a full-time internet boy!
i've adored kon's work since i was a kid. my parents used to let me watch paranoia agent and paprika with them when i was little lol. seeing you talk about details of his life and his career that i didn't know makes me so happy. keep making content dude, i'll definitely be watching it.
Your analysis and appreciation was just lovely - how you felt about Kon and his work was as clear as the facts and measures. I like that because it feels in line with his work. Thanks, and I look forward to seeing more of your work, including working through the back catalogue!
Every Frame A Painting’s and Stevem’s Satoshi Kon videos really made me realize and appreciate the limitless possibility of animation. Pure unlimited artistry flashing in and out through the silver screen seamlessly. Rest In Peace.
Stevem, I am watching this again just after watching the new documentary "Satoshi Kon : the illusionist" that just came out in France in the theaters. You are really talented, I enjoy every second of it. I hope you get ine day a larger recognition, you truely deserve it.
Satoshi Kon and Ito Junji are my all time favorites. Its amazing that people can live in a different culture than me but really make me feel connected and empathetic to their characters and stories. I guess there really are things that are just human and always translate. Ahh that composer is so good i had forgotten his name
I just want to thank you for reading his goodbye-letter in the end in the way you did. I felt that it was him reading it. I can feel your thorough respect and understanding of this amazing film-maker. Thanks for taking the time to make this tribute.
Kon's letter at the end of his life is so haunting... the amount of injustified shame he felt on his last days of life just break my heart. I'll always hold dear his movies close to my heart. Life is unfair.

your video essays are some of my absolute favorite on youtube. you did kon's story so much justice, this was a great overview of his life and i cried hearing his final message
I really wish he can animated oyasumi punpun. I know it better not to be animated but i have hope this guy can animated it because he has a unique visual of life.
This retrospective is really good and well written, but I think it would have been nice if you'd made it more clear when you're using your own words and when you're citing Satoshi Kon. You go from talking about the movie yourself to speaking from the perspective of Kon almost seamlessly, which makes it confusing and jumbled up at times. That being said, I really enjoyed this video.
I bloody cried when the realization that this man is no longer alive and he was behind some of my favorite animated films from my childhood and today as an adult.
Not quite sure what brought me here, but man am I impressed. Not only captivated the full watch time, but your thorough research and well everything. Serious great job man.
Kon was my favourite anime director. Paprika is sooo epic & Paranoia Agent is the best anime series of all time for me. The episode with the suicide-theme... just wow.
I'll be completely honest. I found this video by complete accident, when i saw the upload date being only 5 days ago i knew that i didn't saw it. That research was amazing omg I loved every second of this video. Thank you for making this
Satoshi Kon was a big inspiration for my older brother and his sketches. After rewatching Paranoia Agent and Paprika i became inspired and drawn into his amazing work. I’m glad i saw this video💜

Great, thanks!
also here's an interview with a british animator who worked with Kon on his last film
www.mangauk.com/aya-suzuki/
Thanks for the reference
Satoshi Kon was also a founder of the Japanese Animation Creators Association who have been fighting for better conditions for animators as well as funding Young Animator training programs
The fact that he only has 5 works but is already in the upper echelon of the greatest anime directors is a testament to just how much of a genius he was. R.I.P Satoshi Kon.

Someone who brought so much joy and artistry and connected people across the world
Cool a mother is willing to apologize but not for something like that. Or not something a kid wants to hear.

I bet if Satoshi was still alive, he would make a great adaptation of Goodnight PunPun. Hell, he’s probably the only one capable of making an anime adaptation of that manga.
You're so goddamn right. But I also love Goodnight Pun Pun in its manga form.

Hmmm let's say I totally meant it to be interpreted that way haha , I was a little worried some might get confused but I made sure in the subtitle to always make sure people knew if I was quoting

@@Stevem congrats on 900k+ views! Its fully deserved 👏😸
God his last message broke me...
What a giant loss of a person as well as a creator...
I feel like Paprika was a vastly under appreciated film.
It got a remake by Nolan that got universal acclaim.
In 2006 I think it was. I got to see Paprika at one of it's First Ever Premiers in Washington D.C., at the Cherry Blossom a Festival. And Satoshi Kon Presented it us Attendees. The Reception it got was Great.
@@MemoContrerasf It just really sucks that practically no one knows that Nolan based it from Paprika
Satoshi kon was amazing. Perfect blue is one of the most craziest movie experiences I've ever had. Millennium actress too.

I'd go as far to say that Sir Stevem is youtube's very own best boy

The man's inspired me so much and I'm so glad you put the time to make this video to commemorate his decade passing and tell more things about him that I'd love to hear.
The part with his parents absolutely broke me. I can’t imagine how anyone in that room felt as his mother said that.

Kon pointing at his face with the pointer is the cutest thing I've ever seen
I really enjoyed the way you told his story, specifically his relationship with otaku culture. Lovely video on an incredible man.
It's kind of perverse to say, but the most inspiring aspect of Kon's life is how he died. He had work yet to do, but he achieved what he wanted, was content with his life, and faced death with as much dignity as he could manage.

Thanks for touching on Susumu Hirasawa's work. His music was a perfect companion to Kon's work.
Amazing video! I love Tokyo Godfather!
Sameeeee
That one is my favorite!!!
@@princessthyemis it grew on me a lot on the later viewings
I miss those days where manga and anime is more about the story and less about the harem
This is beautiful. Satoshi Kon and Susumu Hirasawa's work in anime have been important to me and I appreciate this tribute. I expect to return to it.
I can't imagine the crazy amount of work you need to make such a video but I'm really amazed!
your video essays are some of my absolute favorite on youtube. you did kon's story so much justice, this was a great overview of his life and i cried hearing his final message
I really wish he can animated oyasumi punpun. I know it better not to be animated but i have hope this guy can animated it because he has a unique visual of life.
I have to say this is one of the most thorough and heavily sourced videos I have ever seen.
Generally i tried to segment them , but i didnt want to overuse the quote format. Check the subtitles, It is all telegraphed on them
@@Stevem Yeah I get it, there are lots of quotes in there
@@dontpanic5278 also im pretty sure i only use first person language with Kon not myself
A true inspiration. Rest in peace. You live on in your beautiful work.
The episode with the suicide-theme... just wow.
yes that episode is a masterpiece i love going back to watch it every now & then
I'll be completely honest.
I found this video by complete accident, when i saw the upload date being only 5 days ago i knew that i didn't saw it.
That research was amazing omg
I loved every second of this video.
Thank you for making this
this video s amazing, Loved it, probably one of the best videos on Satoshi Kon.

Satoshi Kon was a big inspiration for my older brother and his sketches. After rewatching Paranoia Agent and Paprika i became inspired and drawn into his amazing work. I’m glad i saw this video💜
