I doubt anyone born in the 90s and 2000s would be the hardcore anime and manga fans of today without Toonami it introduced me to Dragon Ball Z Naruto Yu Yu Hakusho and all the other classics. This amazing block is just another example of how the modern Cartoon Network will never measure up to the iconic CN channel from my childhood.

Pretty sure most people born in the 2000s were in preschool or Kindergarten when Toonami went under in 2008... (unless you count the 2012 revival, but if not, it's more of a 1990-2000 baby thing)

There was one time Tom paid tribute to C. Martin Croaker, who was the voice of Moltar and Zorak on Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. It was a great way to pay tribute to the original Toonami host.

despite we didn't have toonami in my country, i find discussing the channel history so fascinating as it shows how it spread the anime culture in the us.
heck, i think it even influenced channels that aired anime in other countries (my country included) somehow as i found some shows that aired on toonami got popular to the point that also aired at similar dates in the channel of my country.
    really nice and informative video.

This brought up a weird formative memory for me. I remember there being one night as a kid where I felt too sick to fall asleep, so my dad just turned on cartoon network. It was during the Toonami block, with the Big O playing. It was the only episode of the show I watched and the only thing I remember about it was the giant robot and its cockpit.

Like many others, Toonami had a hand in introducing me to anime, I like how no matter what show Toonami aired, they were able to make an awesome promo to get you interested in that show and having Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime narrate the promo was the icing on the cake

  • @Ema_Not_Emma

I started watching anime on Adult Swim in 2010 or so. I remember staying up at my grandparents' house watching adult swim on a crazy low volume when I first saw it. The first one I really remember was Durarara!!, and I only really knew it as 'the anime block' well into the Toonami revival because I was literally 9 years old when it came back on air. The two ones that I remember best though, those were Casshern Sins and Deadman Wonderland. I had the bell episode of Casshern Sins burned into my brain like a core memory, and I watched so much of Deadman Wonderland. I only even found out what Casshern was because apparently Wikipedia has an entire page dedicated to the history of their programming schedule.
After that, it was history. Soon I started torrenting subbed episodes on my ipod touch, as you did back in the day. Lots of memories on those bootleg anime streaming apps

Inuyasha is one of my favorite Isekai. The new world is sublime, the demons have differents designs and are scary like the birds with giant bodies or cute like Shippo and Kirara, the music is excellent and all the openings too; the action is good, the characters are likable. I love Kouga the wolf guy, he's loyal and vrave plus it's funny when him and Inuyasha are grumpy 😂The romance is well developped. It's cute to see Kagome and Inuyasha slowly liking each other, fighting together too.
One of the moments i dislike is near the end, before episode 100 i think. Kagome and Inuyasha were alone in her room and about to have their first kiss then her brother arrives, interrupt them. I was so angry at the kid i almost insult him! At least the couple could kiss later but that part was still frustrating.

    • @krasherom
      @krasherom ปีที่แล้ว +1

Inuyasha is definitely great, just one thing though... it was time travel to the ancient past, NOT another world, thus not an Isekai, which translates to "other world".

Cardcaptor Sakura was a WEIRD choice for a show, since it really leans into the "Shoujo" part of "Mahou Shoujo". They wanted an action series, but they decided the better option out of Sailor Moon, Pretty Cure, and "the show by the ladies that made Kakyoin lay an egg" was Sailor Moon and the Jojo fanfiction girls. I think they might have even had the manga out, if by piracy or otherwise, so fans of Cardcaptors that liked the edited down version that decided to read ahead in the manga were going to be in for one hell of a shock at the actual focus of the series in the manga. Pretty Cure also has an appeal that would have been similar to Power Rangers, with cast refreshes every season. Pretty Cure would have generally been a better choice, marketing-wise and overall, especially since they already had a deal with Toei animation for Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon.

Im a young teen, who's grown up in the anime spectrum where its sorta big, and with the Advent of streaming, it's sorta sad we won't have cool bumpers like this, I always like to check with Tom, (if I can), most Saturdays while I'm not into the huge shonens they air, it's still pretty cool, having any anime on tv at all, (and yes you nailed food wars right on the head), but I appreciate a block like toonami, for introducing so many millennials and some Early gen Z's to anime, which is awesome because of them we have it in such a Major spectrum today, I do kinda wanna wish I was little older before we cancelled cable because toonami seems awesome and the few times I've caught it, I've really enjoyed it.

You probably know this by now, but Toonami was originally a weekday afternoon, after-school block of programming. The Saturday evening block that eventually came about was adult swim anime, before eventually being rebranded Toonami as well.

I was growing up around the time of Tom 2 & 3, but had no idea he was still going to this day, and still voiced by the GOAT, Steve Blum!

I watched Toonami almost religiously. Why do I remember it being on weekday afternoons and not targeted towards adults like he say throughout the video? Around 2004-2005 it switched to Saturday evenings. But late night blocks before then were either adult swim or the more violent/mature anime like Inuyasha and FMA. That was never aired during the day. Yu Yu Hakisho was even aired late night originally before coming to the afternoon block with more censorship. It wasn’t until around 2007 when Toonami was ONLY late night.

When Toonami first aired in Australia in 2001, the first four shows it had were Dragon Ball Z (Which was up to the Funimation dub of the Android Saga at the time) Cardcaptors, Gundam Wing and Batman Beyond. Other shows i would watch would be Zoids, the 2003 Astro Boy Series, 2002 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Transformers Armada, Transformers Energon, Duel Masters, Pokemon Advanced, Hamtaro and One Piece. Toonami stopped airing in Australia in 2006, a year before Tom 4 appeared in America. However, during Toonami’s final years airing in Australia, I never got a glimpse of Tom 3. In fact I didn’t even know Tom 3 existed until learning about him when researching Cartoon Netwrok Fusion Fall. I watched the Total Immersion Events featuring Tom 5 and Tom 6 on TH-cam after discovering the sequels to the Intruder while looking up the Intruder on TH-cam. Since then I’m been keeping an eye on Tom and Sara’s adventures over the years and it was during my research for the block I learned of Tom 4’s existence.

A group of Girls who were Sailor moon Fans vs Dragon Ball Z Fan Boys
The teachers had a hard time to think about what they were fighting about

Here I am watching this 7 months later where Toonami got rebooted with Rewind. They have Dragon Ball Kai, Naruto and the VIZ dub of Sailor Moon ( best version I think). I do wish I got into anime earlier so I could see Fullmetal Alchemist airing.
