      @@hclyrics 🤣 the only tantrum I vivedly remember throwing as a kid was once when my fam stopped at McDonald's to eat and I specifically told my mom I wanted the grilled chicken sandwich, WITHOUT RANCH. She comes back and I open the sandwich and it was smothered in ranch dressing. I was like, MOM! I repeated a million times! WITHOUT RANCH! And I pouted and refused to eat anything even though I was super hungry 🤷🏽‍♀️
      My mom claims I never threw tantrums as a child, but I remember that one because I felt so bad afterwards and thought I should have just eaten it cause mom had already bought it and it was wasteful. Also, I was a pubescent, not a child, so maybe she's still correct that I didn't throw them as a young child, but I did throw a few as a teen. 🫤

    A few updates on the Climax Blue drama:
    1. Stephen Colbert did a segment on the controversy on The Late Show! There are some funny parts as well as some cringey, tired jokes (which I share my thoughts on on the first Patreon voice note podcast), but overall it's great to see this story getting even more mainstream coverage!
    2. The comments on the WaPo article are OVERWHELMINGLY positive and supportive of Climax. People are clearly on their side, sharing ways to order and support them, etc. I didn’t see one comment siding with the GFA (I’m sure they're there, I just didn’t see any). Another win for Climax in this 🧀stinky🧀 situation.

      @@thebowandbullet I agree with both points you made about Stephen Colbert.
      Have you seen John Oliver's implied criticism of slaughtering animals on his recent show about "Pig Butchering?"
      Colbert and Oliver were both reporters for The Daily Show when Jon Stewart was the host the first time.
      Jon is vegan and owns a farm animal sanctuary, so maybe he influenced Oliver?

      @@thebowandbullet And more importantly, stay vegan for life! So many celebrities dabble in a plant based diet, and when they go back to eating animals and what comes out of them, too many people assume it can't be done sustainably, despite all of the vegans who never go back. I am surprised how few people know that Jon Stewart is vegan. He doesn't hide the fact, but it would be nice if he more often used his show to promote veganism. An interview Jon did years ago with Jean Baur about his farm animal sanctuary may have helped Jon to go vegan and create his own sanctuary later on.

    That ending lmao. In the theme of "Is this good news?", I feel like the water crises in Arizona and on the Ogallala Aquifer due to unsustainable factory farming-often run by foreign or out-of-state entities-may hopefully spark some conversation on the inability to support animal agriculture at its current scale. Obviously locals running out of water is horrible news and heartbreaking, but I still think there is a disconnect between the presumed "need" to have these animal products and the very serious problems they are causing to local communities. I am a hydrologist and part of the reason I went vegan was because I could clearly see how animal agriculture was the major problem in water resources in my own research. However, most of my peers still consume meat and dairy despite seeing this themselves. I always find myself asking when is the tipping point for people to adjust their own behaviors. A great book related to these ideas is "Running Out: In Search of Water on the High Plains" by Lucas Bessire. I was able to talk with him about his research and it was a really great insight into the thoughts and feelings of locals affected by industrial farming and water resource problems. Great video once again!

      This was such interesting insight; thank you for sharing! The topic of large-scale animal-ag damaging our natural waterways is so depressing and I personally feel a bit hopeless that it will get people to care. I kind of lost hope when a global pandemic didn't seem to change anything about the way we operate and then, of course, the terrifying threat of H5N1 looming large but people still contorting themselves to figure out how they can continue eating their favorite animal foods. BUT I'm heartened to hear that you observing these natural crises was the motivating factor for you to go vegan!
      I didn't know about the situation in Arizona; thank you for calling my attention to it!

      @@TotallyForkable yes I am!! I see some intros in these, but an in-depth news-style intro where they talk about the situation with a brief overview of the entities is something. You already do the describing properly, it just needs the theming added in.
      As for what's next, some 'on the ground' live journalism is an extra step, but it's an extra effort one. So I feel - if you did add anything, it would be a research one - looking in-depth as to what's going on, almost documentary style like Vice or DW news - to really examine individual news pieces in depth - the history, strides, failures, successes - like the regular GVW pieces - but for news pieces that had a cliffhanger that needed closer. Yeah - that's the one.

      ACTUALLY--found this handy dandy blog post and it seems like they rival US-based airlines for vegan options! *Actually* having a "plant-based snack box" instead of "box where most of the things are vegan but oops there's one cheese item, too bad"? Also having a delicious-looking chickpea and mango wrap? Once again UK outshines the US in acknowledging vegans are not squirrels 🙃

    I think we should call vegan imitation products something trollish that at least sticks in people's memories. I don't know if I have any good ideas for names. Maybe something like chickless as an imitation egg product with messaging on the packet about how chicks are thrown in a blender in the egg industry. I think people interested in these sorts of products are smart enough to find them through their social networks.

    I'd love me some kokum butter 'cheese' - but honestly - imagine how many great foods that haven't been made GRAS that are just waiting to? Sad how toxins like yellow 5 and Orange B are GRAS - even though they were called 'coal tar colors' and now sourced from petroleum - which comes from crude oil (from what I know). But I don't see how kokum butter could be GRAS - due to the high saturated fat content. Not sure how even coconut oil is gras, but that is, so is cocoa butter, so we got to make up our minds.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I mentioned this in another comment, but there was this fishy line in the article: "Not all ingredients need a GRAS certification: The FDA grandfathers those that have common use in food." So basically, even though many ingredients aren't "regarded as safe," even "generally," the FDA will look the other way because they're "common." 🤔🚩🇺🇸

    • @extropiantranshuman
      @extropiantranshuman 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TotallyForkable ah - I didn't see it. I'll look harder next time. There definitely is something strange happening - since it might not be about safety, but even if the FDA isn't perfect, there might be some level of push for making everything as equally qualifiable as possible - so I can see why they raised this concern, and maybe it's the competition itself that might've not thought it through on letting any ingredient in, when they probably should've made it only GRAS for safety reasons. So I think it's a good thing to raise the concern, and every competition starts somewhere. This seems like a new one, so they'll likely refine it for next time, but it seems they're still not quite paying attention to it all. Maybe they will later? Who knows. At least there's others that are if they aren't, and with enough complaints will make the competition as fair as possible.

    I see how this competition makes sense that they're trying to keep out vegan cheeses, because the whole point of the competition is for real cheese. I don't really believe in injecting the vegan products into animal based initiatives, because it's too forced. Why not just have vegan competitions of one's own and call it a day? I bet veganism would increase substantially that way instead of waiting around for better, only to see 'better' being in reality 'worse'.

    The creators of that cheese deserve accolades (yes, pretentious) for their accomplishment. I certainly wish them and all other "vegan substitute food" manufacturers well. But I personally want to leave my animal product eating history in the past and not be reminded of it. I can't see myself buying vegan sausages, hamburger, and cheese. Okay, soy yogurt and soy milk have become breakfast staples for me. I guess that makes me a liar... a stupid question: Is your mother Andie MacDowell? I recently flew on United Airlines from Tokyo to San Francisco and had ordered the vegan special meal. Not only did I get my inflight dinner as soon as the seatbelt light went off after takeoff, it wasn't that bad at all! It was curry based with I believe puffed rice or barley and some roasted tofu bits. The salad was the same one that everyone got. But my poor non-vegan wife looked so longingly at my special meal while she waited for hers to be deliviered that I gave her a taste and she pronounced it edible!

      Your vegan in-flight meal sounds great! Better than what I had going to London on Delta--a tasty assortment of veggies, rice and curry sauce but...zero extra protein (chickpeas or tofu would have been obvious additions). But yes, given I had a "special" meal, I got mine before everyone which was a huge perk! I totally respect your wishes to leave animal-based foods in the past; I think everyone has their own opinions and journeys on this which I think is great. I personally appreciate how appealing some of these companies are making vegan foods look to carnists--my mom (not named Andie hehe), a huge dairy lover, actually expressed interest in the Climax Blue cheese 🤷🏻‍♀️

      "Good" is a bit of an ambiguous term. It could mean "good for you," or it could mean "tastes good," or "the practices to make it are good/ethical." Obviously there is a ton of humane-washing in these awards bc they act like ethics are so important yet a third of the categories are animal ag-centric 😑
