    1971 - MOUNT EDEN
    1971 - 5th Craven Filter Miracle Mile (1609m)
    1st MOUNT EDEN (Jack Miles)
    2nd DEEP COURT (Joe Webster)
    3rd BAY FOYLE (Charlie Parsons)
    Then came: STELLA FROST (Doody Townley), NEUTRODYNE (Buddy King), MANAROA (Alan Harrison).
    Margins: 15 yards x half-head
    Winners Rate: 1:58.8
    CHAMPION WA pacer, Mount Eden, fresh from a number of sub two-minute miles during the Inter-Dominion series at Addington in Christchurch, New Zealand, was the star attraction of the fifth Craven Filter Miracle Mile on March 12, 1971. Basic prizemoney was increased to $17,500, with an additional $12,500 in time incentives.
    A record Miracle Mile crowd of 24,492 saw Mount Eden, driven by his trainer, Jack Miles, overcome difficulties to win brilliantly in 1:58.8, only .2 of a second outside the record held by Halwes.
    In a race of sensations before the biggest crowd at Harold Park since the 1960 Inter-Dominion Final, Mount Eden wanted to trot in the score-up then went into a wild gallop just before the field was released.
    Punters, who had backed Mount Eden into 6-4 favouritism, were given another chance, however, when the starter, Clive Salkeld, declared a false start. The field re-assembled, but once again Mount Eden wanted to trot a few strides in his hopples. Miles restrained him, but the champion broke into a gallop. This time there was no second chance. The starter went without him.
    Still in a gallop, Mount Eden was left a conservative 10 lengths as the Kiwi mare Stella Frost and Bay Foyle raced head and head into the first turn. Tailed off for some considerable distance, Mount Eden unwound an amazing turn of speed to catch the field, then swept to the front with three furlongs to go. He then careered away to beat Deep Court (16-1) by 15 yards, with Bay Foyle (8-1) a halfhead away third.
    Both Mount Eden and Stella Frost, which finished fourth in 2:00.4, were later sold to race in America to bring the tally of exports to the United States to fourteen [www.menangleparkpaceway.com.au...].

    Never seen this before and it might be the greatest performance ever by any horse any where.

      This was the biggest harness race in Australia at the time, so the horses that he beat were not second rate. Mount Eden just made them look that way.

    That truly was the greatest win of all time in the miracle mile, you had to be there to get the full affect... the place was packed out, Mount Eden had caused 1 false start so that's why he let them go the second time..... I went there to back Charlie Parsons and "Bay Foyle" but I can tell you I've never heard such a roar when Mount Eden started his run in the back straight... the strange part was me and most people there were cheering him on and we had bet on another horse.... one crazy night.

    There will never be another Mount Eden. I was fortunate to see his many wins at Gloucester Park which had to be seen to be believed.

    Cardigan Bay won the Inter Dominion off 36 yards behind.....as if that wasn't good enough, he did it at Wayville in South Australia, Wayville was only 3 furlongs in circumference, he went through the series winning all of his 3 heats from 36 yards behind as well, when you circle a field Wayville you are covering a lot of extra ground, and there would have been a field of a dozen or more to get around
    I was there when Mount Eden won the Miracle Mile, which was a relatively new race, about the 4th or 5th running, it was hardly a fair race, he had a lap on them, a very similar thing happened the year Gundary Flyer won about a decade later, he galloped in the score up for a second time and they let them go without him, he wasn't as far behind as Mount Eden though....and he won easy and broke the track record from memory, unlike Mount Eden who got a rest with cover during the race, Gundary Flyer circled the field, sat in the death, forced the record pace and still won, running about 2 seconds faster than Mount Eden(which would just about account for the extra ground lost by Mount Eden, I was more impressed by Gundary Flyer cos I had my wages on him(he was trained by Michael day, whose Dad Frank Day had won the Miracle Mile consolation that same night with Friendly Footman, I have a feeling Friendly Footman may have won the Miracle Mile the year before??
    There have been a lot of great performances, when all things are equal and the best horse wins by default, it's boring, I was bored with Winx and Black Caviar, like a movie you had seen many times before, now if their gate had opened 5 seconds after everyone else, we would have had a race on our hands, when you remember Wiux, what do you remember? it was a blur to me, I was never emotionally invested but races like Mount Eden and Gundary flyer doing the impossible, you never forget even the little details, there have been many Miracle Miles but a few stand out, well to me anyway!

    He wasn't "70 or 80 yards behind the field" after missing the start. 25 metres at most.

    • @timoshea1767
      @timoshea1767 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      first of all your estimate is how far he was behind the last horse not the starting leaders and secondly 70 or eighty yards is only about 60 metres and his was at least that from the leaders and if you know anything at all it was the miracle mile a sprint race and some of the best and fastest horses in the world stop down playing one of the greatest wins in harness racing history it was a sub 2 minute mile which was nearly unheard of , mainly because it is measured from the first horse not the last, AN ABSOLUTELY HERCULIAN PERFORMANCE .

    • @Baskerville22
      @Baskerville22 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@timoshea1767 The exact words of the over-excited race-caller were, "70 or 80 yards behind the others, at least" That means he was saying Mt Eden was 70 or 80 yards behind the 2nd-last horse.....AND HE WASN'T. By your strange logic, the 2nd last horse must have been 50 or 60 yards from the leaders when the race-caller made his exaggerated claim. AND what is your point about "70 or 80 yards" being "only about 60 metres" ? The race-caller said "70 or 80 YARDS".

    • @timoshea1767
      @timoshea1767 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      you are a poor listener , his exact words was seventy or eighty yards behind the others and secondly he crossed the line more than3 seconds behind which in a short distance is near impossible to make up having to sprint catch up go three wide and then have small settle down in pace than having to sprint to get to the lead and then tear away from the others like they were second rate if you knew anything about harness racing it was a one in a million performance and Jonny Tapp is a world renown race caller having done this for decades not a newbie getting exited over nothing that was and is one of the best runs ever@@Baskerville22

      p.s i have and many others have watched harness racing for more than fifty years and you do not know what you are talking about just look and some of the expert rate him he is always one of the first choices for best ever.

      @@timoshea1767 Our disagreement is not about how good - or not - Mt Eden was: it's about the race-callers' claim that he was "70 or 80 yards from the others".
