  • WA Champion runs arguably one of the best races in history. After giving them a big start he beats a crack field of sprinters like they were country cups horses.

    I can't watch this race enough. Mount Eden had a great sense of the theatrical. What a horse.

    The mighty Mount Eden - still the greatest after all these years.

    Imagine how good he would have been if there was the number of mobile races as there are now. Years ahead of his time. He's still rated as one of the greatest standardbreds to have ever raced in North America.

      I was there that night with my brother. I was 17. Along with everyone, I booed Mount Eden after he blew the start....and cheered him at the end. It was a privilege to be there.

    Yeah Brian what a freaky pacer imagine if WA pacing had the mobile then how many world records would he have broke when you've had a bad day just watch this horse he will lift you up tell your children everyone he was from god this amazing horse

  • @bgardiner2000
    @bgardiner2000  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @myopic55 He paced a mile in 1:55 unofficial at the old Richmond Raceway in 1972. The mile race record there at that point was held by Radiant Oro and was outside 2 minutes. He was a generation ahead of his time. Even this pales into insignificance when you hear that Dan Patch paced the same mile (1:55) in 1906. That's faster than you could have driven it in those days. Beyond belief!

    Ah, the 'Bathurst Bulldog'. I watched the mighty Hondo Grattan win his second consecutive Inter in Perth in '74. He was a champion but few would argue he was a little lucky to win that night. His 15 metre handicap allowed him to sidestep a big crash at the start, which put the favourites, including Paleface Adios and Just To Good out of contention. As for Mount Eden, well everything that could be said about him has already been said!

    Yeah what would he have done menangle scientists could work it out but I've seen him do on a sand track 2.3 jacks track west Australia maida vale back then over 2500 and amazing freaky horse,so right just like phar lap

      +Terrence Walsh I've heard it claimed that Christian Cullen's track record in the 98 Miracle Mile 1:54.4 equated to sub-1:50 on Menangle. I have no doubt on the expanses he would have gone even faster. Village Kid ran 1:55 flat in timetrial at HQ as a 13yo, before the track upgrades. I'd hate to think what he could have run now, on Menangle, when he was a 5yo when he ran 1.55 flat at Albion Park over 2100m hard held in the 86 Interdominion final. Mount Eden... if he ran consecutive 28s quarters without any coaxing in this race 3-4 wide (through the first 1/4) I have no doubt he'd have been Pegasus on the 1400m of Menangle. It's speculative.... but he was just so much better than his opposition.

    Stanley dancer had him in America took him out one frosty morning hard held on his track he went 1.56 then broke down end of him and amazing horse

  • @bgardiner2000
    @bgardiner2000  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, I don't know how much courage he needed... he went past them like they were tied to the fence. Remember, these were the best mile horses around at that time. He was just so much better than everything else. Like Christian Cullen at 4. In my time the best few I've seen were Village Kid, Westburn Grant, Jack Morris, Christian Cullen, Chokin, Sinbad Bay, Our Sir Vancalot.... I could name a few others. Black's a Fake though trumps them all for utter dominance for such a long period of time.

      Harness racing's Phar Lap. What would he run over the Menangle mile?

  • @bgardiner2000
    @bgardiner2000  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure whether or not he was the best... but there's not been one better. If greatness was determined by dominance his record would be difficult to eclipse.

    We can all be hypothetical saying the kid christian Cullen all those,champions might have beaten him but look how he gobled up one of the fastest mile horse ever on a,small track reichman after losing the start

    My uncle was there the nsw people couldn't beleive it they were throwing their race books in the air wish I was there I patted him my late father knew jack a very nice bloke and bernie

  • @bgardiner2000
    @bgardiner2000  17 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes he was pretty amazing. He would still have been competetive today at grand circuit level if his racing manners had improved.

    I know Maori's Idol of course... I still don't think there has been anything to ever race in Australia with anywhere near the same raw talent as Mount Eden. If he had raced during the heady days of Harness Racing like MI did he would have won everything. Unfortunately there were still too many standing start events when ME raced. MI was a king in his era... Mount Eden has 20 years ahead of his time.

    Loved hondo he's my second best ever pacer but I'm pretty sure the mount a good start would have thrashed him like Phar lap these animals are from god different

      Pretty sure it wasn’t Johnny Tapp calling the race - this bloke was very difficult to understand - or is it just me getting old and not hearing too well !!!!!
