I'm gonna do it for ten year old me who sketched and wanted to do it but didn't feel encouraged and gave up. I can do it. Thats what I'm putting out into the universe today
The privilege thing is so real, growing up back in west Africa , gives one a perspective and an overall crazy work ethic. Excited for the brands that are coming out of Africa especially Nigeria.
It would be good if he had said in English speaking countries because all of it has to do with colonialism so there is this belief that that's the only place things are happening.
Something I see that more successful designers have in common is that they're curious and independent. People always ask me where I learned X or where I found a plug for Y, but the successful creators around me search for those things themselves. That doesn't mean you should never ask anyone questions about anything, but researching it yourself is more beneficial than plainly getting it handed to you.
I think there are some questions that are more abstract that should be asked. But if you have done your due diligence and have research and still haven't found it then you can go to someone.
I know this is obvious but Trend forecasting is really a huge benefit, not only in creating a trend but also in fighting off one. For example, Dr Martens have been a Staple trend for a years, expanding business highly, but the product quality overall has been utter dog water. Now former Doc enthusiasts are moving over to Solovairs, who originally used to manufacture Docs. The trend has taken a toll on DrM's production quality. Thier enthusiasts no longer have a willingness to participate with the brand, endorsing a competitor that literally used to make the best version of the original products. This can too have a generational effect as enthusiasts tend to pass down to thier kids.
SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE. This has been and will always be my motto! Thanks Ayo for this video. Pretty encouraging as someone who's working on his fashion label!
I came to this video because I love the content on this channel. I’m going to start my own fashion label and I want to launch it in spring 2024. Wish me luck
The innovation aspect also comes from making the same simple stuff over and over util something clicks, or even something happens by mistake and you end up with something a little different. Don't waste you time thinking that you need to change the world in a day
Finding your channel so far has been amazing, I hope my dreams come through and my effort doesn't goes to waste, I loved every bit of this video and more❤
Thank you for this video I think it was honest and informative. I agree 100% working on building an audience is just as important as your studies, craftsmanship and show skills.
After looking at the Shein scandal, I think designers need to make clothes that are hard to copy. Like make designs that are too complicated/ avant garde/out of trend/ almost not commercial. Becuase the designs I've seen that are copied can be made by anyone and they can be easily sought after in any fast fashion retail.
this isnt going to work. there is one thing we are actually ignorant about which is Branding. The branding is actually the best thing to focus on. know your audience and master your branding because at the end of the day people are buying a brand. since you mention that anyone can copy the work, it is hard to copy personality and thats what branding can do.
Would love to hear you cover those looking to make it thats not anywhere close to a fashion capitol. Slow and steady wins the race but it's slower, steadier and $$ in small cities.
i am currently doung Art in school, ive applied to uni in the UK, but i want to learn transferable skills. I enjoy the creative purpose and i value my ability to be creative which drew me in. Also, looking pretty and how clothes is just a large part of that
Great video, Fashion Roadman. I truly think that mascot marketing is really cool. It may not be the most cost efficient way to market but if one has enough savings/capital then they can invest in a fashion mascot.
the private and public versions of yourself don't have to intersect! I do think it's important to sell yourself and your ideas, as customers want to build a sense of trust with a person not a brand. However, that person doesn't have to be a version of you on full display, you can be reserved, retain some anonymity, and build a version of yourself that's communicated the brand and all your other projects 😊
I feel like after you get yourself out there enough times it gets easier. But there will be some days where you may feel like being more private, and that is okay. Just be authentic
I have a question. As a person with a intellectual disability, not understanding the ropes of how to become successful and lack knowledge also. Can I just continue to give out my clothes free to celebrities, for showcase and exposure? I really don't understand the business side of knowing what to do. But the skillsets are there.
As a Nigerian living in Nigeria that's too creative for her own good and sees that my country isn't going to help me I get so frustrated with westerners when they don't take the opportunity that's in front of them. You don't know what God has done for you.
“There is no point in putting all your energy in being the best tailor in the world. cuz if people don’t know who you are, it’s really irrelevant” We should NOT base the succes of an artist on other people…. succes had nothing to do with the amount of instagram followers you have. lol
It’s about having an audience. That doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with followers on any platform. All the “great” designers you know are because they had an audience. There are definitely designers in history that could have been more skilled than the likes of a Dior or a Balenciaga but because no one knew who they were their work will never been seen. So no, there’s no point putting all your energy in being the best tailor in the world. It’s about balance. Learn about tailoring, pattern making, sewing etc as you also learn about marketing, brand development, business etc People like to have this ideological view on life that doesn’t work in reality because every “successful” artist you know has an audience. In art and fashion we need to stop glorifying the archetype of the amazing starving artist because anyone that is great at anything can always find an audience of people that will appreciate their skill.
I live in Cambodia 🇰🇭 and I just started college and when I tell everyone I study fashion designer everyone seen to look at it as a mistake when I haven’t started yet but I can also understand why people view it that way
I would definitely recommend learning how to sew. Designing is great , but useless when to don't have the sewing skills to bring your designs to life. It's better to make the products yourself before hiring someone else to do it for you , so that you can then be able to communicate clearly how you want you products to be made. Your'e putting yourself in hot water if you're clueless about construction techniques, especially if someone's doing the sewing for you. You can simply buy sewing books and pattern books/ magazines. Popular pattern companies include Vogue patterns and Burda. A popular book for making patterns from scratch is the Wilfred Aldrich book. If you want to be taught in a class , it's best to take short courses. Going to uni may teach you the basics of sewing, but you will be bombarded with other assignments so won't have much time to properly learn how to sew.
I am gonna do it for that little girl who used to love scissors and loved sketching little princess dress I wanna proove those who wanted me to pursue medicine. I am doing this i am manifesting it 🎉

How is it going? ✌️
Slow and Steady
Slow and steady really does win the race.
starting an IG page for your brand, even just getting your friends to repost it is a lot of exposure
Yes! Friends are great for exposure. I would also recommend having a story or a reason for them to talk about it, create some buzz!
Spot on man! A great strategy to audience building is collaboration. Collaborate horizontally and you will by default keep moving up vertically.
Yes Exactly!

I've always been curious but what would be the best way to build an audience if you're shy, or a private person overall?
If ur extremely shy or introverted the only way to build an audience is to have amazing pieces of work and let them speak for you.
@@shiylon thank you for the advice! 🙏🏾 I’m hoping that will be enough
