    When pushing pistons back into the caliper I first loosen the bleed nipple. This avoids the need to draw fluid from the reservoir and avoids pushing fluid from the calliper back into the hydraulic pipes and worse the ABS pump. The fluid in the callipers may have been through many heat cycles and may contain contaminants from corrosion and degraded seals.

    • @AJB1
      @AJB1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've started doing this too these days. Avoids any tiny risk of debris in the fluid getting into the ABS unit, but I also find it less effort than drawing fluid from the reservoir, and why not drain out a bit of the oldest and dirtiest fluid (in calliper) rather than the newest and cleanest (in the reservoir)?

    It’s a good idea to do the stop at 35km occasionally to clean the shoes and the disc’s drum surface… they can corroded and pit if left for years only being activated when parked.

    If it was a TOYOTA it would never need brakes replacing as they last forever. Even in the outback here in OZ! I have a late model Toyota Hilux and a Prado across the road from my house and they never break ever ever ever...and they have a hammer and shifter in the glovebox, which does all repair work if required.
    I think Christian also needs a Tattoo that's says "I LUV TOYOTAS" and "COPPER GREASE"
    Vera , when Christian is asleep please write in on his arm in large Black sharpie/Nikko pen.......lol It will take at least 3 days for it to fade......Luv your work!

    Good stress free informative video, and yes it is not a difficult job replacing the brake pads, rotors and parking brake shoes. My son did my rear brakes including the rotors. I watched. My son is an apprentice mechanic. He did my front ones a little while ago. Now the inner front left CV boot is damaged. He will be replacing that also.
    On my previous vehicles I used to take the old rubber insert off the front wipers and chose the best for the rear - the rear wiper hardly ever got used. Nowadays I replace front & rears at the same time with new ones. Either I was a cheapscate or now couldn't be bothered as new ones are easier 😁

    Great episode this week guys , shame you have to take one side apart again to replace the wheel bearing. Bodsy’s brake Bible is the best guide on how to service the rear brakes ( I know you guys have mentioned it before ) , for diy viewers who would like a pdf download . But it’s much better to see it done like you have just shown , and we all forget to snip off that cable tie .
    I liked the coffee cups at the end to keep Toyota owners happy , though they must’ve been confused by the rubber mallet , as they are used to using a 5lb hammer or bigger lol ...
    Looking forward to next Sunday , take care

    I just did the brakes on my Jeep with Powerstops new rotors and pads. Those parking brake shoes are such a pain in the butt to replace and adjust. Jeeps do not have an external adjustment hole for the shoes, so you have to pull the rotor off every time that it needs to be adjusted. I wish mine had that little adjustment hole to finalize the park brake adjustment.

    Well I hope you have better luck with the Brembo discs than I did. They went rusty behind so badly that the steering wheel shook under braking. Took me a while to realise what was wrong. Replaced with Textar coated. Please don't sell the 4. Have you changed the cam and fuel pump belts? Much harder than on the 3, particularly if you have the stop/ start system. The fuel pump belt is timed as it's a two rather than three cylinder pump. Keep up the good work!

    Another great video. Question:
    On the front brakes, what would cause the disc brake (inner) Dust shields to be coming loose and start to rattle?
    This recently happened on my Ranger-rover Sport L320. The brake pads and discs themselves, are fine and do not need replacing.
    For the time being, so that I don’t need to take off the entire disc assembly, I have secured the front Dust shields with 3 strategically placed zip (cable) ties. It seems to have solved the problem. But what caused them to become loose in the first place?
    The rear disc brake Dust shields and still tightly secured.

    • @kristoffersmith8289

    • @garethdavies3220
      @garethdavies3220 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Christian and Vera (and David), it would be better to use Ceramic brake grease ,such as “Ceratec” on brake pad ends and the caliper carriers as copper grease causes electrolytic corrosion and actually makes the situation worse accelerating the corrosion. Ceratec contains no metal and also stays in place much longer than copper grease. I switched from using copper grease on my customers vehicles a few years ago and can see the difference it's made.
      Great video as usuall, those parking brake shoes look like a real pain to do.
