Hey I'm not in a position to argue with you, you seem to have a excellent understanding of how to raise cattle, and and I think by seeing your herd, you are doing it right!! Great job
Hey BP and was nice to see CP also! Glad she got her deer! It was informative what you said...I never thought about the older cattle not being able to chew as good as the younger ones...I can see your point! Enjoyed the vidjya as always my friend!
Good morning. I probably told you this last year. Neighbor was very short of feed last year. I sent him to watch your video on tub grinding. Told him what you'd told me in the past. He has a vermeer bale buster. Only ever used it for bedding. He used it and made a small pile of mixed. Then fed it in bale feeders. Said he could believe it. Cut his hay consumption in half.
Thanks for the video BP, congratulations to cp on harvesting her deer. Would be nice to see it . And also would have been nice to watch Fallon clean out the big grinder. But I know you had to do another job. Thanks again and keep your stick on the ice.
Good morning, BP and CP. Nice set-up. A farmer across here did some hay bales like that. He has his in an open fronted shed. Mostly because of the amount of rain we get, it wouldn't be that good quality if left outside. 👍
All of them grinding trucks around here has a crows nest that goes up and down and has a grapple fork that lifts the bales up and weighs the bales and put them in the grinder. They have 600 hp cat motors that runs the grinder. So all I do is stack bales on both sides so the truck can back in between them. Last time we had them grind it was 15.00 a ton. We never take the netting off. I have seen a cow crap out a little bit but it never have had trouble with it. And we have had some cows that has had 20 calves so the netting will not hurt them. Have you ever had a pile catch on fire? My best friend use to run a grinder and had a piece of steel pass through it and he went to pull the truck away and burned the grinder up and the next day the hay pipe went up and burned it up.
I've never had a pile burn up but I've heard of it happening...no one around here has that kind of machine with the grapple...I believe there's a couple in Alberta
I agree, them older cows raise the bigger calves. Kind of why we usually focus on buying middle age cows out of herd dispersals. They are proven by that point in their lifespan. The depreciation isn’t so bad, in fact we have appreciation on their value if we are buying them right. Heifers and young cows are not as proven and will lose more of them to not being bred back percentage wise as well. Only had 8 opens out of the 211 cows we tested the other day. We pulled out the crocks and bad attitudes, swing bags etc. out first, wasn’t paying to test them. Had 14 late ones out of the 211 as well that we will put through the bred sale cause I wanted to tighten down to a 2.5 month calving period from last years 3.5 month calving period.
@ a bit before that even, however I just bought 65 breds so who knows how they’ll shake out in the end, but these 190 that I have left should be done around the beginning of June.
@ bred 235 in all. Had 9 bulls from 2 to 5 years old. Maximum of 25ish per bull in each herd. One group of 50, one group of 70 and one group of 115. Try to mix their ages up so they don’t fight much in each herd. Worst year I had was when I’d bought 9 two year old bulls. All they did was fight and frick around. Now there’s a boss with each group and no more fighting.

Looks like the tub grinder operator may have had a bit of a rough night before he got to your place. Lol. A touch of the brown bottle flu, maybe.

211 in the pasture. Venturing to say 6 @2 year old bulls at a minimum???
