I've said it for years. "If Bulova makes a Precisionist that doesn't look like a dog's breakfast (and isn't the size of a saucer) I'll buy one." Good job Bulova!
Bulova is all over the place, some outstanding models and some crazy looking ones. I have three Bulovas. A clean dress watch, a Chronograph and a Precisiononist with a curved glass
Very cool movement in this one! Finally a watch with this movement that isn’t an over-designed 55mm monstrosity. In a way it’s like a budget spring drive 😂
This Jetstar and the Lunar Pilot are tops on my list of quartz watches. The ticking hands of a quartz don’t bother me THAT much, but I LOVE the smooth sweep on a mechanical. My Citizen Garrison is one of my favorites. I’m glad Bulova is leaning into their back catalog.
I love the Lunar Pilot white/blue dial but didn't want to spend that much money on that particular watch, I found the Accurist 7410 alternative, £80... Might he worth a look for Lunar Pilot fans?
The Bulova movement model number for this watch (96K112) is 'NM50'. There is a similarly named calibre 'NM50-Y8Z', but it's not immediately clear if these are identical.
I have 3 Bulovas: Bulova Automatic 97A136 (Aerojet) Bulova Wilton GMT 97B210 Bulova Precisionist 96b158 I love all of them, although the came wayyyy unadjusted. About 80s/day. But all of them are gorgeous.
The precisionist movement is amazing (gain or lose maximum 1 minute in a full year). I prefer an uncomplicated more simple look, so I don't go for some of the more modern Bulovas. I own and recommend the Bulova Lunar Pilot.
Call me crazy but I love the single second tick of quartz movements. Only thing for me is the second hand and indicies must align! That said this is a great review - Thanks!
I think if Bulova keeps doing what they are doing with their special editions they are going to get back to their reputation and status as a super respectable watch brand I felt like they lost their way in the early 2000s
Finally, a high beat quartz from Bulova in a reasonably sized case. Not a big fan of the current dial colors, but if they released one with a blue or green dial and white indices I’d be all over it.
@varanid9 I am the same way about gold cases except I dislike them for their rubbing through. Being old enough to have actually bought "gold" watches in the seventies and have this happen I am hesitant to buy any non steel watches, although maybe the new tech finishes hold up better?
The only quartz watches I own are the Jet Star and Lunar Pilot because they are so accurate. BTW, my special edition came with a small desk clock that matches my silver face Jet Star and my spring bar didn't break😁
Thanks for this episode. Initially I really liked the limited edition too, but as the video continued, the gold one grew on me and I think it would be my choice. I have a couple Bulova's, one with this movement and yes the battery life is a bit under 2 years. My other one is a 1951 tank style hand wind that looks great but doesn't really keep time.
I have the limited edition silver edition too and it is a stunner, I do get a bit intoxicated by how smooth the sweep second hand is, as I don't own a Grand Seiko Spring Drive (yet), it's the smoothest sweep I own.
All colours looked good, prefer the blue but my god not normally a gold watch lover but this one looked fantastic esp with the dial colours and leather strap. I used to own a original Bulova tuning fork and so regretted doing a swap with a orient bambino
About the lume. Just to check how well it works, I charged mine up before going to bed, and around 8 hours later in the dark I could still read the time. Mine works good enough for me. Its a very nice watch. The size is great. I also like the size of the date window. Some of the movements just make the date too small, but the date here is a good size.
I have always wondered why quartz sweeps were not done this way given they can adjust the ticking in powers of two. I LOVE THAT SWEEP. And for once I think I love all the colors even that mustard/gold/brown you are lamenting not purchasing. I really wish Shimano had not just released a mechanical 12 speed 105 because I love this watch and will have to choose between new bike guts or super cool and accurate 70s hotness.
@@slyfondle1885 As Jody spoke to. Yes, it does. I can’t speak for you. But for me, the tradeoff is not just worth it but WELL worth it. I really think Bulova doesn't utilize these Precisionist movements enough. Especially in watches like this. These are great. Not sure which color I like the most.
Great video Jody 👍. The re releases look great! Great to see Bulova not just going Richard Mille 😂😂. I was lucky enough to pick up 1966 Accutron in working condition cheap. The 360 hz sweep is silky smooth, although the Grand Seiko spring drive is even smoother apparently?? Cheers 😊
Jody. Cracking review as always and a great looking watch, a bit shiny for my taste but if pushed I'd go for the 3rd one in your lineup with the gold hands. Just a quick note on the yellow dial version. I noticed some brown spots in your macro shots at 5:18, 5:52 and 8:30 and wondered if it was marks on the crystal but it looks more like marks on the dial?
I own three Precisionists. That's two Claremont and one Langford. Love them all. Wearing the Langford on and off (say about three weeks total) lost only ~6 seconds during a year-long trial. In this instance more accurate than the Seiko Spring Drive on paper (10 sec/yr) and approaching the Citizens T100 movement (1 sec/yr) and nowhere near the cost cost of either. I may need a 4th Precisionist; the Jetstar. Last word: hypnotic sweep at Bulova prices!!!
I will definitely pick up a Jetstar some time this year. I just bought 2 Bulova Surveyors with Precisionist movements (black dial and blue dial) and I'm hooked.
I absolutely love my Bulova Precisionist watch. The finishing is top notch and there is nothing close to the smooth second-hand sweep unless you drop $5K on a spring drive Grand Seiko.
Why not get rid of the sloping 8 figure or infinity sign and rep[lace it with the Tuning Fork and straighten up the 262 khz. Place the 262 on top and the khz under the 262 ?
Love the 1st one, the silver red and blue! But, my eye is leaning towards the gold watch with that nice brown and yellow strap. That's probably my favorite! Long live the 70's...
I was looking at these a few days ago and decided that i would be very tempted by the brown and gold one, because it is very 70s looking, my first ever digital watch was a brown and gold Timex LCD bought for me in the 70s when i was about 12 or 13. I like the idea of a quartz movement with a sweeping second hand like this, if I feel like getting myself another watch soon, this could be it.
Another great video Jody! I've been seriously tempted by the Merlot dial (sounds fancier than "red" 😂) since I saw it launch. Love everything about the Precisionist movement and now that it's in a more wearable and beautifully-styled package, it's only a matter of time before I'll pick one up.
It's almost a shame that Bulova don't make tuning fork movements any more, considering they still use them on the branding/logo. Sure, they're technically obsolescent but it would give Bulova some market differentiation. Especially after they spun off Accutron with their Electro-Static technology into their own brand... This could just be my own bias from owning a vintage tuning fork movement and loving it though!
agree that the B is all over the horological map but i have an orange devil diver, the 43mm lunar pilot and best of all the mil-ships diver and seriously they get as much wrist time as the higher end swiss items in my collection. i love 'em!!
Cannot believe that I missed this review from you Jody. I’ve just received the limited edition which is even better looking in the flesh. No issues with the pins when re-sizing fortunately. Thanks!
Haven’t bought a watch for 2 months because there was was simply nothing out there for me until this one caught my eye. Managed to pick up the Limited Edition for a reasonable price £426 to join my Lunar Pilot. Cannot wait for its arrival. Thanks Jody.
FINALLY! A 40mm. Precisionist! I'm interested, but I'm only 'Jomashop' interested. I'll check back in a year on these ones though. I sure do wish they'd shrink the 'Lunar Pilot' down to 40 mm.
Hey, I think you made a great color choice, Jody. I love something with a bit of blue. But I‘d also go for the brown. I love its nostalgic vibe. Tell you what… if you decide to get the brown would you consider selling me the silver?
I have the limited silver dial one on they way. Probably size the bracelet, then wear it on the leather strap. Think it looks better. Kind of excited about that quartz movement. Very cool! Thanks for the great review.

This is a really great looking watch despite the mediocre 50 meters of water resistance and not so good lume. The red version is the one I really want but 600 USD is a lot for a quartz watch. I would really love to see one in person but it doesn't seem like any retailers have them in store.
The Precisionist and Spring Drive quartz movements continue to threaten mechanical automatic movements like when quartz first came out and caused the original crisis. Great video Jody and beautiful watches. The limited edition red, white and blue is my favorite. 😊 🇺🇸🇦🇺
Hi Jody, I am between a dark green Bulova Surveyor, 290€, and the Seiko Presage Sharp Edge, also green dial, but 500€ more expensive. Is worthy pay for the second one or the Bulova is cool and with good quality enough? Sorry for my English and thanks
This looks amazing! I’v been silently begging Bulova to release this movement in a good looking watch and they finally have 🎉🎉. I would have preferred 38mm and maybe a little thinner but beggars can’t be choosers I suppose.
You are no beggar. You're a paying consumer! I agree, a little smaller, thinner case and better lume would be preferable. I still love these, especially the sweeping seconds🎉
I have 3 precisionist watches and you are right about the accuracy and battery life. I do love the sweeping second hand and it's grab and go nature. Been waiting for new models and this one looks good, but too pricey for what you're getting. Keep trying Bulova.
Ooh, I love that bracelet's design! Also, being a fan of 70s design school I like all of the watch variants. They should have a 100 m WR though, I mean is this a real problem these days? It's not like it is a strictly "dress" watch, either... To me, 200 m WR should be currently a standard for affordable divers (and G-Shocks), while 100 m is a norm for a "semi-dressy", sports watches. I can accept 30 m - 50 m WR only on those fragile, blingy dress watches, which are supposed to be worn only on special occasions. Funny thing is, I was born in '77, but it's not like I'm specifically after designs from that period. It's just whenever I see something I really like (a car, a watch, a radio, even a desk lamp or something) it only later turns out, that it's a design from 70s... Weird coincidence. So naturally I'm into these more conservative of Bulova's models, though you can still find some newer designs, which are quite OK. For example model Modern Millenia Ceramic, especially the black one with subdial, is partially skeletonized (and I'm not a big fan of these), but in my opinion it's still not overengineered, like some other of their newer watches, and it looks very decent. While I always liked chronographs and I'm OK with busy dials, I don't like when they are OVERLY busy, which is why I don't like much of Bulova's newer models. I think Lunar Pilot has just right proportions of everything, anything more starts looking a bit tacky. Also the Computrons D-Cave are a bit "meh" for me. Not bad or anything, but not really exciting, either. Personally, I prefer the "old" ones, namely the classic, golden one with red LEDs, and the silver with blue LEDs. Some of the Curve designs are pretty nice, too (though not all of them). For my personal collection, I'm definitely going with Lunar Pilot, or one of other, more "classic" Precisionists.
I want to see that movement in some micros. Nice job bulova. Please do some more brushing, and drop the 262khz from the dial, put precisionist or use the symbol.
Who doesn’t love a seventies reissue, beautiful sweep and styling. Am I unreasonable to expect colour matched date wheel at this price? I hate butterfly clasps…
I’ve been eyeing this one since I saw it. I own a Precisionist 3-gander already, but it’s a 42mm that’s just a tad bit too large for my puny wrists. See this one is smaller, so hoping to pull the trigger soon. I may spring for the red one, though I wish they had more color options. Edit: it looks like you get more color ways than I was able to find! That B141 looks really nice, wish it came with a bracelet though. Will still probably grab the red one down the line.
Hello Jody and thank you for another great review. The thing is I noticed lately that Bulova is being Citilova more and more... Anyway they all are still cute and curious too. Saludos!
I've been waiting for this 1, thank you Jody! I almost feel obligated to buy 1 after years of pleading with Bulova to put their smooth sweep into a reasonable sized case. Was it just weird reflections, or were there notable spots on the dials?
I've said it for years. "If Bulova makes a Precisionist that doesn't look like a dog's breakfast (and isn't the size of a saucer) I'll buy one." Good job Bulova!
This. I'd own a Precisionist if they made one with 100m WR, screw-down crown, and they weren't thicker than a stack of pancakes.

Both the limited and gold/brown are solid choices but leaning towards the limited on the leather strap 😁
Tq. Really intrigued by precisionist sweep. Will pull the trigger if they launch a model with rotating bezel. Haha
I have 3 precisionist watches and you are right about the accuracy and battery life. I do love the sweeping second hand and it's grab and go nature. Been waiting for new models and this one looks good, but too pricey for what you're getting. Keep trying Bulova.
I've got the marine star automatic. Lovely watch
wish they could figure out how to make a proper design with that movement. maybe its devil diver with that movement and proper lume
I think Lunar Pilot has just right proportions of everything,
anything more starts looking a bit tacky.
Saludos!
The mustard gold and brown nails the '70s style. If I was looking for that retro vibe, it would be the one.
Glorious! That sweep! Thanks, Jody!
this watch is so beautiful, I wish they hadn't put the 262 kHz thing on the bottom. Could have just left it at Precisionist.
Quite happy with my tubby little bulova hack now it’s on a decent military strap
I've been waiting for this 1, thank you Jody! I almost feel obligated to buy 1 after years of pleading with Bulova to put their smooth sweep into a reasonable sized case.
Was it just weird reflections, or were there notable spots on the dials?
Thanks Deepak from StarBuy!
Good to see this Bulova reviewed ♥
I have the gold one. It is a great change-of-pace piece for me.
Definitely no bad color combination here, but I like the limited one you got. That’s a stunning watch! Thanks for the great review as always.
