    The Mechanical Watch Movement Explained Simply
    Barrel? Double Barrel!? Escapement? Barrel Arbor? Arbor Hook? Keyless works? Motion work! What is all this?
    Today we will talk about the mechanical watch movement, and we will try to explain it simply. By taking you on a journey to the heart of a mechanical watch, we will see the different parts that make up a watch movement and how they all work together.
    Put simply, we have energy stored in the barrel, which travels through gears we call the going train, leading us to a funky-looking wheel. The escape wheel dances all day long with the pallet fork which swings left and right. The rhythm at which these contraptions dance with each other, is set by the hairspring and the balance wheel which turns back and forth. How does all of this work though?

    How the escape wheel was making the balance wheel move, through the impulse pin & jewels, is the one thing I was always wondering about. Thanks for the video.

    Excellent video. One tiny point: Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; rather, it can only be transformed or transferred from one form to another.

    A conventional watch movement is both crazy and brilliant. It's a miracle that such an apparently haphazard arrangement of components can actually work, yet alone keep excellent time. A striking clock movement (s) with going train, striking train and chiming train is even more insane. But it works! Nobody can look at this video and not love watches... Thank you for this! 👍🙂👋

      Nothing haphazard about the arrangement, but rather it is meticulously deliberate.

    That's a great presentation and makes understanding how a mechanical movement works fairly easy to understand. Despite watch movement technology being hundreds of years old it is still captivating and genius engineering. Many people are enjoying wearing mechanical watches, even in these digital times, because clearly a mechanical watch has something of a soul. In short it's man's attempt at constructing a beating heart.

    Very nice explanation. Though I like to explain the palet fork before bringing in the balance wheel into the picture. The pallet fork having two stable states (left or right) when torison is applied by the main spring through the train if wheels and that the main spring would maintain its potential energy forever unless something acts on the palet fork (enter the balance wheel).

    Thanks for this informational video! Could be added, that the wheels turn exactly how they need to turn to let the hands show the time 😉
    How long did it take to make all that animations?

    • @degriff
      @degriff  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Thank you very much for the kind feedback and the addition! 😄 This took around three weeks (full time days) to make, using Blender. I’m sure someone more experienced can do this much quicker, but this took me a ton of time as I don’t do this type of animation very often at all! I also spent quite some time on the sound design 😁
      Edit: I also have to add that it took several days just to render as I have limited computing power here. And I had to render quite often as I kept running into issues or mistakes which meant starting things over :-) As I said - I was not the most efficient with this!
