I use a round piece of parchment paper over what ever pie I was cooking. Allows me to leave the pie in longer to fully cook. Sometimes I double the parchment rounds. Finally, I also press down on the top of the pie maker with a kitchen towel for about 30 seconds (hot to the tough) with some force to ensure the top of the pie maker connects with the food. This work well for me.

Roll out the dough to makes it thinner and it will bake much more crispy. Also, press foil over the edges before closing the lid.

I have 2 solutions that might work for the crust. Cut out a ring with foil to keep edges from burning then remove to brown while it finishes cooking. For under cooked crust. Place crust in pie maker then close lid to cook the bottom first then add filling and top to finish. Let me know if you try this.

Know it has been a while but- tried this a few different ways- rolled foil ring cut out works while cooking the crust- then regular flat sheet ring for the filling and stuff- doing pumpkin pies- you may have saved pies for me. (yay not just frying eggs in it)

Try a piece of parchment paper. Crumble it up then flatten it out .place on bottom of maker, add crust, ingredients, then the top. Fold over the rest of the parchment paper on top. it helps so it does not burn. I also plug in once all ingredients are in and ready to cook not before

Thanks for the review. I just got one for only $5.99. It's a present but I plan to make mini pies on new years eve with the kids. I think we'll give the crust a few minutes on it's own before filling. We'll also make the filling ourselves so they will be thickened and hot from the stove before adding
    .

  • @chrisholds1

This unit doesn't get as hot a regular oven (the plastic housing would melt). It's really only two hot surfaces, somewhat like a waffle iron, to cook pie crust that's in direct contact. The pies in the pictures in the recipe booklet were probably partially cooked in the mini cooker and then finished in a regular oven.
The reason that the mini bundt cakes cook completely is because there's more surface area against the heating plates and there's less thermal mass that's not in contact with a heated surface to bring up to cooking temperatures.
If you use fully cooked fillings, it works really well. And pre-made pie fillings, apple butter or pumpkin butter works okay. Just keep in mind that any fillings that are cooler that room temperature may not fully heat through and it won't cook any raw fillings.

I think the problem with the lattice top is that weaving the lattice from strips of pastry causes high and low parts.
Two ideas would be to weave it on the counter top then roll it flat before cutting a circle for the pie top, or using one of the rollers that cuts lots of slits in the pastry and stretch that over the top. That way the crust will be an even thickness and should brown more evenly.

I am passionate about Cornish pasties. Your solution sounds a lot easier than making a “real“ one from scratch with chopped potatoes and rutabagas and turnips and stuff. About five years ago when we were in London and it was our last day and we didn’t have anything particular to do and we still had another day left on our rail pass we decided to take the train out to Penzance - a dash to Cornwall to have a true Cornish pasty. We had less than an hour in town to buy our pasties before the turnaround and we really needed to catch the return train because it’s a 6 hour train ride each way. It was a long way to go for a lark, but we had real lamb Cornish pasties in Cornwall. (I have to say that they were heavy with grease and salt and not what we’re used to here, but I could see that it would keep a Cornish miner nourished all day.)

My favourite pie, that we make in our pie maker sometimes, is tuna and egg pies.
Also, a tip for anyone who wants to watch their weight is instead of using pastry, make pizza dough and use that instead. It holds up very well to being taken on picnics as it is not as crumbly as pastry, but still tastes very good.

I think this would be great if you needed to make a lot of mini pies. You could start them in this for 3 or 4 minutes and then transfer to a sheet pan in the oven to finish baking. You get a perfectly shaped pie with crimped edges and no need for a bunch of little pans.

For the pumpkin & breakfast pies that are more liquid filling, you could try baking the crust for a minute or so before adding the filling, then bake for the recommended time. That might help with the undercooked crust. You may have to add pie weights to keep the crust from rising on the bottom. I'd be interested in baking meat pies in that li'l guy. Thanks for the review.

I had the same experience with this product! Crust was either under or over cooked and some of the fillings just didn’t cook enough. I did try a chicken pot pie that was probably the best one for this machine because the filling was pretty much precooked.

great review! especially happy to see the puff paste included for comparison, as well as no upper crust, regular upper crust, and lattice upper crust. my dash mini bundt and mini pie makers arrived today, so have not used them yet, but did watch both of your videos just now, as well as having done some research prior to ordering. i didn’t go through all 151 comments 😂 but i noticed a few suggestions here and elsewhere that looked helpful. i’m only commenting on the pie maker here because, as you mentioned, the mini bundt seems a lot more straightforward and just works!i’m sort of sorry i ordered the pie maker now. i might check out the cuchina pro which one of your other commenters said bakes a lot more evenly than the dash. also just noticed qvc had a vid on a dash pie maker which flips, like some waffle makers - don’t know if it’s still available, and did not catch the cost, but that might eliminate the underdone-in-places top crust.
    1. re burned crust edges on pumpkin pie, your idea of cutting the lower crust out smaller so as to not extend into the crimped edge area is great! as well as your suggestion to make sure to put enough filling in so that the whole upper crust is touching the top surface of the maker
    2. and cutting out aluminum foil to cover the crust edge before it overcooks makes sense.
    3. for undercooked crusts, the instruction booklet does say to roll the pie crust a little thinner than usual, specifically mentioning pre-made pie crusts, which you usually don’t have to roll at all, so that might help with the undercooking.
    4. and also for undercooked crust, you could pre bake the crust before filling.
    5. for undercooked filling, maybe get that nice and hot before pouring or scooping on top of lower crust.
but really, i think the pie maker is just too much trouble. looking forward to mini bundts though!

Hi! I'm a fan and enjoy your reviews. May I suggest you precook the dough in the Dash baker before filling them? When I make myself deep dish pizzas, I precook the dough for 5 minutes in the oven before adding the sauce and cheese and then returning it to the oven to cook at the normal duration. So try precooking them for a couple of minutes. That may solve the issue of the dough being uncooked where it meets the filling.
Also, do you think warming up the fillings a bit (like the apple one) would help the fillings cook more quickly? My favorite is peach pie.
Edit: I just noticed Donna Ostrin's and Glinda Ford's comments. I think they definitely have the right idea! 😁

cover the edges with foil. if you cut out a piece of foil using the little pie crust cutter, the top part, and then using chop sticks score the inside to remove the portion you need exposed for the enter to cook and brown and you’ll have a perfect little open circle to cover the edges only. you can reuse it too. also cut out a strip of foil and place under the pie before assembling and when it’s done you have an easy way to lift it out of the device.

My daughter likes the grill maker/mini pancake maker. Looking at the cutter I don't know why they didn't make the top cutter bigger than the base. It would make more sense since the pastry will shrink when it cooks. Your right always fill more full than it says. Once you figure out the glitches it works fine.

I've always been kind of a fan of DASH appliances - cheap, single-serve, gimmicky. Could probably just use a little pie pan of the same size (which I do) and make something that turns out much better. That being said, I do keto and have had bariatric surgery so my stomach's kind of smallish, and these all seem to make about the right-sized meals - could work out using some of those recipes! Although it seems you ran into some troubles getting a positive result from anything other than a straight-up pie-crust against the cooking surface to work right. I get the feeling this thing doesn't work well with filling that needs to set up or doesn't have much surface contact in the cook process, which is disappointing. But that being said, DASH products are fairly cheap, and I'd probably use fillings like chili or other savory ingredients that aren't very liquidy - which I think would result in some pretty awesome eyes.
... PIES! It would make some awesome pies I meant!! Oh gosh😍

Dash has been around since 2010; I love their egg cooker as I hated boiling eggs and dealing with shells that tore up the eggs even as I followed the Professors ( Mom & Sister's) step by step instructions for dummies. I use the Dash griddle to heat up burgers ect; I wrap them in foil (microwaved heat up's are nasty) for some foods. I have purchased kitchen small appliances costing hundreds that are simply junk. I roll out the pasty & pie dough a little because it's too think and cover the rim (just like baking any pie) with foil or a store bought crust protector.

I would put shredded cheddar cheese on top of my apple filling. Think that would improve it, then add either heavy cream when I serve it, whipped cream, or Vanilla Ice Cream. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmy

You definitely have to play around with this mini-pie maker to figure out how to make it work for you. (Kind of like a bread maker in that regard.)
I always use parchment paper to keep the pie from burning on the outside before the dough cooks through completely.
I get best results by microwaving the fruit filling separately, and cooking the bottom dough for a minute or so with the top open before adding the filling and top layer of dough. You can use a little water, milk or egg wash around the edges to make sure the top adheres to the bottom crust. Press down gently on the top for the first minute to make sure the two halves of the pie dough adhere.
I've had no luck with puff pastry. The only way I've been able to use puff pastry is to roll it out flat, doubling the size, which just about kills the "puff", unfortunately.
For pumpkin pie, it's better to use pumpkin puree (precooked with egg, powdered milk, brown sugar and spices, cooked beforehand) rather than the liquid custard they'd have you use. Again, let the bottom crust cook for at least a minute before you close the top.
If you find your bottom piecrust getting soggy, you can put egg wash or powdered sugar on the crust before adding your filling.
I like that it's easy to put coarse sugar or cinnamon sugar on your pie for the last minute of cooking.
You can also roll store-bought piecrust just a little bit thinner, which seems to help it cook all the way through.
When you take the pie out, turn it top side down to cool so the bottom crust won't crack open.
Once I got the hang of it I really liked the mini-pie maker, but there was a bit of trial and error before I got it right.

Too bad this didn’t work better! I was hoping that it would because using the oven heats up the house so much. That wasn’t a bad thing when I lived further north, especially in the Fall and winter, but now it’s just so hot... 🥵

You made my two favorite pies, Apple and pumpkin. Thank you for showing the issues with this maker. Did you use canned apple pie filling? If so did you cook it first or put it straight out of the can? We’re the apples done or were they too crispy?

try cutting a piece of aluminum foil in a circle cut out the middle to fit just the edges. Like you would on a regular pie. I would spray the bottom with a butter flavor spray oil just to brown it. Cook the bottom crust a few minutes before you add the filling and top. See if that would bake it thoroughly.

I'm not very impressed with this product, from watching this video. Not that you did anything "wrong" - I probably would have tried the same things you did. These "Dash" mini apppliances are cute and all, but not very practical for "family" cooking. You'd have to cook them one at a time, and by the time you've made one for everyone, you could have just baked a pie in the oven. Might be better for singles/dorms/barracks etc? I see in the comments that others have discovered little "tricks" to get more even cooking and such - but I still think this just isn't a product for me (cooking for 3, at the very least). I do appreciate your review very much - it was honest and practical.

It’s my only mini Dash that gets zero stars. Good try, love Dash, but the bottom is raw while the top crust is burnt. I admit I only tried twice, but both were dismal failures. Was trying to make small mince pie for my husband since he likes them more than anyone else. Maybe we should cook it without the top crust on for a while and then put the top crust on press it quickly. Don’t know. But for the price it was a good try. I still love Dash. My fave is the mini Bundt cake maker. But I might have to try the egg cooker. It looks like you can do a lot of things in it. Or maybe the little grill. [belated edit for some egregious typos!]
