      FFXIV does something similar already where each class/job have their guilds placed in certain city states, and it's all very much ingrained in the lore, so Riot absolutely could do the same for this.
      Hell, even WoW kinda did this back when weapon skills was a thing, where you could only learn certain weapon skills from certain cities. Like if you were Horde, the only place to learn how to use axes was in Orgrimmar.

    I personally think that a good model would to have the base classes(warrior, ranger, mage, rogue, etc.) and then allow every character to learn different sublclasses through quest lines, like having a mage learning blood magic in Noxus or time magic in Shurima. To distinguish between the different starting areas, allow the different races to have different armor and customization options, tattoos on Bilgewater humans or large beards on Freilordians.

    There's a MMO system I would love to hear opinions on, as the Riot MMO reminds me of it.
    In the MMO, players picked a region to start from, and this region influenced their class specialization (i.e. Tempest Thief in Region A vs. Shadow Thief in Region B) The best system I recall from this MMO was how it implemented skills through Skill Books.
    Skill books could be dropped from monsters, found in chests, and some even given by quests or bought at NPCs stores. Skills were then divided into two categories: Active and Passive. Passive skills were continuous buffs or abilities that applied to your character (like Silent Steps or Uncanny Dodge) and active skills obviously needed to be activated by the player to be triggered.
    Skills could also have requirements, such as specific class, level needed, or specific subclass (defined by Region you call home) for really unique skills.
    However, players only had 50 skill slots to equip skills (think 5 WoW hotbars), making it a unique resource management.
    As a light novel's creation, I know it may not be as perfect as it was portrayed in the story, but I am curious of its plausibility for something completely new I haven't seen in an MMO yet.
    P.S. For those that are curious: the light novel is "Rebirth of the Thief who Roamed the World"

    I do think allowing all races to start in all locations could even work to their benefit. For example, he stats that Vastaya probably won't exist in Demacia, but if you pick a Vastaya in Demacia, maybe your questline revolves around staying hidden and maybe changing the viewpoint of the Demacian's or just escaping etc.

    • @TheFoolishnoob
      @TheFoolishnoob 2 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      @@GhostMan407 but mages obviously still do exist within demacia otherwise mageseekers would need to be a thing. If your next counter would be that the lore wouldn't allow mages to change the Demacian view of magic, I'd say once the game is released, the lore becomes separate from League of Legends as it becomes a living land with people who think for themselves as apposed to the writers having a say in what happens.

    • @rowmein
      @rowmein 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@TheFoolishnoob I'd have to TOTALLY disagree about the separate lore thing, League already has like 4 different cannons with them being Arcane (which is a spinoff of the league lore meaning it's not canon and was adapted to fit a series), LoR (the card game which has some plot holes and weird cards that don't make sense in the canon lore but is in a weird place because it is and also is not canon, basically canon with a grain of salt) and then you have the Official canon with that being the universe lore and etc and then you have skin lines. So with so many stories already going on at once i wouldn't want the writing team and individual writers getting more confused then they've already been in the past. This gives us much better stories and consistent plot's with fewer loose ends and etc. My point is the MMO should definitely be canon, i can imagine the community or fans of league's universe getting upset once they find out none of it essentially matters, It's already happened with arcane.

      While that'd be cool, the bigger issue is you want your starting quest to be the same for either race, class or starting towns(Most do 2 of the 3 together). You can't have a unique race quest line that's also unique to the starting town, because that's a ton of work spread out creating dozens of starting quest lines when most developers will be smart and do 3-6.

      another thing about minotaurs that could sooth some peoples souls: remember when necrit said they have the annoying "sexual dimorphism trope"? it's true, there are female minotaurs that are petite and small, BUT that's just a small minority, there is canon artwork of a female minotaur that is just as big as the males (maybe even bigger), it's just that the one shown in the video is part of a secret cabal that is attempting to control Noxus from the inside, so you could see why she has a lighter build.

    I feel like they should do a seperate starting zone dependant on classes and origin, then making it easy to reunite later with friends. Like have a class questline where you learn the game and the class, and then at the end you choose your first specialization and get the option to either stay in that region questing or travel to another. For example: You pick the class warrior and origin Freljord. You do your questline and come to the end and pick your specialization, but you want to play with your friend who chose ninja and Ionian origin. Then you get the option to either travel to the Ionian main hub to meet your friend, your friend comes to Freljords main hub or you both travel to somewhere else entierly (with no travel time, or atleast a very short one).

    • @TaIathar
      @TaIathar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Just gonna put a flipside idea out there: You pick a race, you pick a class, you get your basic starting area lore, you get your basic "this is what your skill does, now use it on this training dummy", then you get a Player vs. NPC battle, then the world is open to you. I think if they follow the way WoW's world works from this point on would be fine. A bit of travel and you're standing next to your friend. Also, NEVER INTRODUCE FLYING, PLEASE! Having the choice between using your "dash" skill to get from location A to location B or save it to escape from a stealth enemy should be a choice that players are allowed to make. Having a "Recall" option to go back to your starter city is fine, but exploring the world should always start from there. Allowing people to change their set home (such as with Hearthstones in WoW) is also fine as it lets people choose where they want to return to.

    • @ouwle6618
      @ouwle6618 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TaIathar So we both kind off said the same thing. Ofc the world should be open after the intro quest(s), but i like it when the game gives you options of starting places (like ESO does nowadays with the portals). I think this makes it easier for newer players aswell to find each other AND not having to worry what place they start in as it is easy to move to another place. However the place you move to after the beginner class questline should be kind of semi-permanent in early game. Like they should make it so if you start in demacia but you want to quest in noxus, you get the option to "betray" them (to make quest and lore out of it) and cost free travel with some mercenaries or something to the noxus capital. But if you want to go back to demacia or travel elsewhere with large travel services then it will cost a fortune compared to early game economy, so choices of travel matter. You can ofc walk there but seeing how large the map is, have fun walking for hours.
      Based af. No flying mounts. Recall "hearthstone" allowed on cd. Only means of travel should be ground mounts and travel services like airships, boats, horse carrige or similar. Could even be paying for a mage or hextech engineer to open a portal. And large travel services should be restricted between capitals and be instant. But smaller forms of travel like horse carrige or small boats in lakes should not insta teleport you to your destination so you are able to jump of whenever you want. And it should cost enough money where you actually have to plan out your early game economy. "Should i take the airship, or a horse carrige halfway or should i save up for a mount later and just ride over there?"

    I think a good option for the classes is to make it so each "subclass", which Necrit has shown is region based, is unlocked in that region. This way it makes sense to the lore, if you choose starting area you can get that subclass first while playing through and wouldn't need to travel to get your preferred subclass, would allow players to change their subclass in game with it making sense if you've unlocked it, and means for any future DLCs they just need to add the subclass system for that region and player could play as that subclass without having to make a whole new character. The main downside to this is that, when a subclass becomes meta (near 100% likelihood if the subclasses change ANYTHING gameplay-wise and aren't just aesthetic changes), people will start favoring starting in that region when making new classes (i.e. if Noxus warrior's subclass is faster at clearing before max level, almost every warrior alt will start in Noxus. Or if the Ionian mage's subclass gives a movespeed buff, mages will want to pick it up for faster questing travel even if it'd just save a couple minutes of traveling time)

    • @marcog.verbruggen674
      @marcog.verbruggen674 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      here's my idea for the classes in this game, and i'm not sure if it would be a feasible idea for an MMO of such a scale as Riot's planning, but it's what I feel would be the ideal marriage of game design, lore adherence, connecting back to LoL in a fun way, allowing the players to live out the fantasies they want to, and doing something new and unique. Note that this idea works off the assumption that they will have a more active skill-based combat in the vein of GW2 and Terra rather than classic WoW or FFXIV style tab-targetting, which i feel is a safe assumption to make given what they have said so far, their pedigree, and their aim for mass appeal. Here's the idea:
      make the classes very basic (probably the actual "classes" of champions in the actual league game: Tank, Fighter, Slayer, Marksman, Mage, Controller, Specialist; there's even proper subclasses you could use as advance classes or different talent trees for each: Tanks can be Vanguard or Wardens, Fighters can be Juggernauts or Divers, Slayers are Skirmishers or Assassins, etc). Make them mostly consist of passives, special modifiers, unique mechanics (ammo management, mana fatigue, berserk rage, stacking buffs, etc) or talent tree kinda things with maybe just a few active signature abilities.
      Then, make the weapons in the game limited, but completely unique, and its the weapon that dictates most of your active abilities and combat style, and have synergy with certain class(es) - like how in Bloodborne each weapon has a different move set so they're all unique, but they scale better with certain kinds of stat builds and pair well with certain items so you still have recognizable builds and good limitations on the player for balance.
      So instead of having a dual wielding gunslinger class like Miss Fortune and Lucian and a long range sniping class like Caitlyn, and a bow wielding ranger class like Ashe and Varus, and a cannon-wielding class like Jinx or Tristana, you just have a Marksman class that gives certain bonuses, passive abilities, talents and a couple unique ultimates revolving around fast-firing physical range damage, and then you have one pair of dual guns with a unique playstyle that works well with marksmen, one sniper rifle that has a unique playstyle that also works well with marksmen, one machinegun, one pistol, etc.
      And maybe the dual pistols work in such a way that they can be effectively used by Marksmen, Assassins, or Divers, in different ways, and you can even have more than one of the same weapon type (but still very few compared to standard MMO gear lists) with different aesthetics or unique signatures - imagine how much more special, unique and cool it would be if there were only, say, 5 whip-type weapons in the entire game, all had unique looks, and the newest raid boss has a chance to drop a brand new 6th whip that has a new look and a unique passive ability.

They dont't have to "all do the same damage", some weapons can do low damage but have powerful skills, others can do high damage but be very limited, others can provide mobility or utility at the cost of damage, others can be generally weak compared to everything else but have a damage over time, others can have unique quirks that make them good at specific situations. Flat stat comparison is a miniscule fraction of actual proper game balancing for both the players and the devs. Otherwise, every single team composition in league tournaments would be the exact same

    While i can see the point that player convenience is a driving factor for an MMO and it can make or break the player experience, i strongly disagree with the notion that we should completely disregard the chance to explore a world-building narrative that could emerge from a race originating from a specific place. I think from the perspective of someone who approaches the game like you do, narrative has little value, but for many people narrative can be very important and you cant just toss it aside.
    I would go a step further and argue that the player's point of view of a region specific or isolated race like the Ixtal people, is extremely beneficial in terms of game design for handling new players, who need to practice their tricks in a somewhat contained and controlled environment and then branch out to the wider world and learn about it together with their character.
    I think its unfair to approach new games with lore that has been under development for over a decade in the same cynical way as when replaying a 18 year old re-released game that has been already explored to death.

    I hope that Riot makes it so, each region/faction in the game, is one of your first choices when making a character. And have your character have different cosmetic choices in things such as ears, facial features, basic clothing and dialogue. Atleast then each character you make feels unique and has a story to tell.

  • @willbordy
    @willbordy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Something they could do since there is soo much possibilities and classes is to also make the regions be important in a unique way , you start as a basic class in a basic region and while you play you expend and learn new knowledge for each region. no need for too much of a bonus and downside , with time you Focus or channel a class of you desire, exemple: you start as a basic ranger in freljord , without ice powers or anything, but at some point you can became a ice ranger or you could migrate to Shurima and became a sand ranger , even though your starting region is Freljorn, after some point you can choose a class specialization and start using a rifle with ice instead of a ice bow .
    Or you could start as a Demacian warrior but them go to monte Targon and learn about the aspect of the war and start using "War magic" them go back to your home region in the oppose side and finish with a Noxus class becoming a bloodmage with war like power wielding a demacian blade of Petricite steel.
    This would be fantastic because if you are just roleplaying you could make a wild character but if you want min-max you could try to go full Demacia or Noxus and have a Unique class for when you build a character in a unique location. or have wild a Vastia tank from noxus with anti-magic demacian armor while using sand magic from Shurima.
    Making that would be the hardest one but also would make the most interesting gameplay.
    Roleplayer like myself would try to make a interesting character while meta player would try to find the most effective combinations while some people would have 1 character and try to collect one of each armor from every region or boss, a explorer could try to find each cave and hidden place to see if them can find a hidden clan to pick up a special class or aspect to be exclusive.
    You could make that every player and race could access almost every place but make that to be for exemple a Mage hunter you don't need to be from Demacia but need a demacian class while having no mage class. so you could make a human from Shurima that learn warrior class in Demacia , tank in Noxus and them became a mage hunter and finish as pirate in bingewater.
    So instead of having A race and a class you build your character up while exploring , so you could be 5 class for each character but classes can be combine or exclusive, A classic exemple would be to became a warrior/tank , at this point you could go wild and keep picking up classes or you could became a paladin or bruiser.
    that means you could have a thousand possible classes without locking people in places and also would be hard for them to find the Meta builds and even if they find and you see a core of players doing the same class combination you could make a small adjustment like they do in league and fix the broken thing instead of reworking a whole Unique Class

    I feel like pvp could be pretty dope if they had some crazy paladin "hammer of dawn" type magic like the GoW weapon, but it takes basically a whole battle to charge up, and the team has to work together to protect the user, in certain team compositions you might need a heavy staggering unit that can remove physical defenses, or as you said a spellbreaker class that can eliminate protective magics on the opposing side that might want to prevent the pally from charging up. I like the idea of classes having very specific uses that are designed around certain strategies. specs are nice but it's cool when MMOs allow for a broad team building experience. The general healer, tank, dps sometimes feels a bit shallow if you don't have a means of largely varied spells and abilities to tap into. I like the idea of some type of sandbox class builder, obviously balanced so you cant take too many spells or abilities are greatly useful over another unless your team can support you. In this case, the overall PvE experience could allow the player to utilize all skills, while the PvP narrows the ability tree and incorporates team specific abilities to encourage team interaction and support

GW2 I only started recently, so I can't say much on that one. WoW though, is entirely different from where it was at launch. When the devs started taking into account people having add-ons as part of the raid experiences, that alone is a sizeable change. People play WoW Classic because it's so different from retail WoW that it's considered a separate game by players and Blizz.
      I don't think that's the issue in this case, but I agree that some people look at games with too much nostalgia though.

I will admit it is a huge world so it's easy to get turned around in if you have no guidance, but my girlfriend just got the game a couple weeks ago and had a good time levelling from 1-48 with little to no help until she got to the Shadowlands content. Currently if you are on a fresh account after coming out of Exile's Reach you should be around level 10 and it should guide you into the BfA storyline as long as you are following the quests. The game gives you the option to PvP at a low level, but it isn't required. Levelling through dungeons is the path most people decide to take first time around. The thing I will agree WoW could do better is giving a "story" option for levelling that brings you through legacy content one expac at a time, in order, so you get the full story. You can do that yourself, but you will probably need some external guidance if that's the path you are looking to take. I wouldn't mind helping you out if you are still interested in playing.

    How cool would b if ur rewards for questing were the skills itself.
    I mean... U go to Noxus, meet vladimir, he give u task to kill someone for him. When u do, he teach u blood magic.
    That way u would b setted up for exploring the whole map to find all the skills for ur class and learning the rotations on the way.
    Better than finding pokemons and also making questing much more fullfilling.
    As long as the quest are different per each class it will never be boring to quest with a new character.

      I mean, I would rather prefear if them just set the class and origin but dont make a specific origin-class result...
      I think is far better if u just pick a class.. Lets say warrior. and start in frejilord as an example... U learn in frejilord some berserks stuff from Olaf or whoever and then u travel to Demacia and u help Garen with a dragon so he want u to join the Vanguard. U follow his questline and after some quests he teaches u some other stuff, making u choose also if u wanna join Vanguard or keep traveling or whatever...
      At some point, u will have many unique skills from diferent regions for ur class. Some of them can be only pulled off if u are wearing a shield, or a dual axe, or a trinket like Illaoi or a time device as Ekko...
      So depending wich weapon are u using and the skills u have learned u will have ur quite unique character...
      I think thats the coolest way to pull it off.
      Also, would b much more rewarding learning habilities than just earning gold for completing quests.

    Classes don't have to be just cosmetic. A Gunslinger could have a core set of abilities and very faint deviances from the core that sets them apart from other Gunslingers. Sentinels could for example not require ammo while a Warden has longer range and slower but stronger attacks, and a different cooldown and one different ability. Your Human could start in Demacia and be a Sentinel as a standard, and when you get to Piltover you could learn how to be a Warden. When you then equip a Warden weapon, you are now a Warden. Kind of like FF14 but classes are more locked and still similar.

Alods online did the same too with a tiny class pool reskinned for each race/faction and just changed some details about them.
    But they can inspire themselve from Rift mechanics too and give everyone a pool of specs to choose that will end doing your actual class when mixed toghether? It may help resulting with the possibility to create some heavy plate mages, some healer bowmans, some tank shooter, some dark magic healing, some light and dark characters, some pet masters, etc...
    There's a tons a cool stuff to be inspired of and help portray the insane diversity that LoL universe have to offer, and they already have been super creative to build that universe and tell stories about those awesome characters so i'm sure they will find a way to continue to amaze us :)

Inside of that, I could see them just adding a subclass like Void or something to figure out what skill trees you get access to. Games like D&D and Pathfinder already do this. You could have a Class, Background, and like 6-10 skill trees based around things that background would have access to and a respect option somewhere for later when you'd it up.

    Have story assigned to region and get rid of classes, spec whatever you want to.
    It's easier to optimize this for end game, if everyone has same skill tree and everyone can be any class that is needed!
    Then randomize the perks every week or month, to make it hard for min/maxing people and it's hard and rewarding to find a FOTM build.
    Then have mechanics in Group Content and PvP, so that makes it required for your team to have healer, tank, a controller and showcases their stuff.
    Have OG trinity, tank, healer and controller and do away with DPS class.
    Have ranked arena PvP and ranked world PvP with cool rewards.
    All those things would make a game more nounced, but at same time more accessible so more people would play it.

    Trying to make classes for this will be really interesting, just looking at the possible warriors. Then I was thinking about mage/spell casters. Sand/Earth, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Arcane, Blood, Void, Time, Spirt, Water, and maybe Starcaller? Not including Summoner classes. Even through Starcaller and Time was label support in this video, which I guess make sense too. What Asmongold said about having specs is one answer, you could do like Fire, Ice and Earth or Blood. However, looking at WoW specs can be good, but they can be a horrible nightmare at the same time. I played mage the whole time I played WoW and personally loved Fire for the most part, but at times because of balancing issue or gearing choices it was either the best spec or was the worse. So unless you can make everything balanced as best as balance can be without having it where everyone is going to play only Arcane because if gives the best dps or party utility vs playing like Earth or Frost. I would almost not want specs or at least just don't have talent trees and base dmg off of spells and more simple style gearing verses the way WoW makes you have to spec the best abilities that give the most dps while saying you have choices and then roll on gear because all the stats are the same, but it has Crit instead of Haste. As Crit is your most important stat.

Example: you buy a sword, which you can then equip any of a number of sword based abilities on (kind of like Path of Exile's weapons and skill gems). They would also be able to pull a lot of the existing abilities from league for this.
      At that point, the classes would just be different starting stats / gear, but you could then build your own ability set from there.

    I think the Riot MMO could learn a LOT from using the classes in some of the earliest seasons of TFT. Figure out those really broad stroke vibes that lots of heroes can fit into. For instance, Brawler, Knight, Guardian, Ranger, Sorcerer, Elementalist Shapeshifter, Blademaster, Assassin, Gunslinger. Then they just layer the flavor on top from there via a spec or "source of power."
    So like a Gunslinger could be the class, but you could be a Void, Hextech, Pirate, or Sentinel Gunslinger. You can sorta already imagine where the different champs from the game fit into that and then go from there. Supporting all that from the jump is a lot, so if you keep it clamped to maybe 2 specs for each class then it's really easy to layer on additional specs later

    After considering this, I think Riot should make everything class related respeccable, and probably have some kind of regional deity you can choose to worship, but each region has certain class specs, so you could create a character in a particular region knowing exactly the classic kind of character from there, or you could be an Ionian who wants to maybe starts as a warrior, but then travels elsewhere to learn alchemy, or gun tech, or elemental magic. And you should be able to re-spec or learn new skills exclusive to certain trainers, or things like that. rather than picking something you can't change at character creation. Each skill you learn can be listed under their 4 base class types: warrior, jungler, mage, and support, then you can mix and match or focus on one.

    Necrit poorly explained the Vastaya, hence the discrepancy with him differentiating between the Minotaurs and the Vastaya. In the old lore the Vastayashai'rei (the ancestors of the Vastaya) were magical animals, however in the new lore the Vastayashai'rei have always been a humanoid race, their magical connection to the spirit realm gave them unique animal traits and nature magic and the Vastaya inherited a diluted version of these features.

    • @nezothgarone2319
      @nezothgarone2319 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      also the statement on one of the xayah and rakan stories, that some vastaya can actually choose what animal feature to have and to a degree how to have it too, that gives A LOT of flexibility for the vastaya in the mmo and potentially custom characters with different options based on origin or unlocked regions.

    • @brunomeyer5352
      @brunomeyer5352 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I undersood, there IS a difference between them. Vastaya ancestors are MAGIC animal f*ckers, where Minotors (and some others) are just straight up from normal animals

    in terms of the class selection why not just make the specialization tied in with the locations. If you select warrior, you start as something vanilla, then when you reach (maybe lvl 10) you have the option to select a warrior specialization by travelling to the relative location. for example, if you want to be a vanguard, create a warrior hit (whatever requirements), travel to demacia, do the demacian specialization quest and become a vanguard warrior

    I haven't played Minotaurs until shadowbane, and I have to tell you that it's everything it's cracked up to be. You're big, you're stacked, you swing a big unga bunga axe, things die. Although I'm hoping this mmo will have big guns. The plus of super strong in a civilized context is that instead of swinging an axe, you are a weapons platform. Why run up to your target and hit it when you can just go brrrrrrrrrr

    You were actually right the first time about the minotaur, you just didn't have the reason why right. It was Poseidon, he sent a white bull to King Minos who promised to sacrifice the bull. Once seeing the bull, he refused, which angered Poseidon, so he had the king's wife fall in love with it as punishment.

    Nobody mentions ESO with it's "faction" system.
    Picking a faction just sets your main city, which there are 3, if you want to PVP, you just queue for PVP.
    In the open world, you can play with anyone regardless of faction.
    EDIT: ESO's class system as well, where every class can be a damage dealer, tank, or healer, every class has a physical damage or magic damage "spec".
    So, yes, ESO would make a very good model for the class and race system for World of Runeterra.
