I am a bit confused. My wife and are are visiting Manchester shortly, staying near St. Peter's Square.
We will then travel over to Liverpool, leaving from Victora Railway Station
Using Google Maps, taking the pink 'tram' from St Peter's Square it says to get off at Exchange Square, then walk to the station. This seems strange, surely the tram goes to the station. Funily, if I reverse the route, it does show the tram starting at Victoria and ending at St. Peter's

Google maps does do that because there are multiple different pins on Manchester Victoria rail station.
You were correct, the fastest way to get to Victoria from St Peter's Square is catching a tram to Rochdale or Shaw via Exchange Square two stops. You can also catch trams to Bury or Victoria. :)

@@brianmorrison9168 No, you can ride a tram from St Peter's to Victoria Station. Should take around 6 minutes.
