Moe Norman shows his Master Move, Vertical Drop, Coin Drill. Golf swing instruction

  • SEE PART 1 of 2 of this VIDEO AT • 1994 Moe Norman golf s...
Moe Norman shows what he believed to be the most important part of his golf swing. The transition, vertical drop, master move, horizontal tug. He also talks about his coin drill.
This video is shared with the permission of the PGA of America who filmed this in 1994. The Q&A is from PGA member Craig Shankland who has released this at no charge to the public by allowing it to be uploaded here online.
This video is for all the Moe Norman fans out there. It is not instruction, and I no longer teach Moe's Golf swing. In my opinion, there are much easier ways to swing a golf club. The best advice that Moe ever gave me was "Swing like you, not like me".

That group of balls on the ground was from his previous range session. He just walks out on the range and hits them back and forth.

Stop copying Moe's golf swing when he was 60+ years old!!! When Moe was in his 20s and 30s he had a full turn and used his body almost violently. That is when he played his best golf. This don't turn crap is how they teach his swing today which is VERY sad. Those copying this old swing LOSE a ton of distance. Swinging more like Bryson dechambeau does is where the fun is at. Hit it both far and straight. Setup for impact swing is what saved my golf game. That is also close to Bryson's swing.

    • @robertnunn2093
      @robertnunn2093 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Agreed!!! Setting up on the impact plane helped me far more than Moe's swing ever did. I feel like it is just a normal golf swing and only the setup is different. Those teaching Moe's swing just want to make it as difficult as possible so that people will buy every device and video they come out with. I also like that I do not feel that I look so different when setting up. My friends did not notice that I was doing anything different except for hitting the ball better!!

AT, I politely disagree about the losing distance part.... I highly recommend anyone taking a look at Kirk Junge's learninggolf.tv his teachings definitely helped me, that being said I am definitely more "Moe" in my approach then Bryson... my CH speed is awesome and any loss or gain in distance on my golf shots is negligible...to say that Moe doesn't turn in the above video is simply incorrect. Good luck and I reiterate anyone looking to improve, should take a look at Kirk's material.

Feel vs Real is very easy to mock when you see someone else but do it yourself and then film it and you won't understand your body anymore! I considered myself to be quite in tune with my body and my feel was that I was doing something so incredibly awkward and my hands were straight above my head when literally they were around my waist!!
Moe Norman was a professional golf player - one of the 0.1% of all golfers. He hit 90% fairways during his career! That is insane and most likely by all eye witness and professional accounts he hit 9% in the first cut and 1% was a "bad" shot.
He once hit a ball over a bridge on purpose in order to carry the water his ball otherwise would have gone in... Let that sink in for a moment. This was not a hacker with tall tales, this was a pro on the circuit with media coverage and people around him. Despite the mockery he got for obviously being a bit "different" - his ability spoke for itself, when Tiger Woods and Nick Faldo called him the best ball striker they've ever seen, why would they lie? They have no reason to stroke his ego!
The first time I watched him I was also like, this is an obvious joke, but when you read the stats and see the facts, it becomes even worse but then you get over your cognitive dissonance and see that if it wasn't for him being so abused because of how different he was especially in a very alpha male dominant era previously in the PGA, he would have been regarded as one of the best ever to play the game and surprising that people who actually did see him play and followed him including major golf stars, do hold him in that regard!

  • @62Sketch

Great ball striker and mad respect for Moe, but it's always interesting to hear guys describe what the feel like they are doing vs what they are actually doing. He talks about no, or very little hip turn. Everything about his swing is pretty compact. I'd say he has a decent amount of hip turn for his compact swing.

230, Moe hit it 250 off the bridge, one bounce & came to rest total of 325 yards with a persimmon wood driver. Moe would play you for your house, cars, wife, bank account, 9 holes in the dark 1 ball. He'd be in your bed before the sun came up & you would still be looking for your first tee shot. He would hit a flagstick 150 yards away 20 to 30 times in a row & let you choose the club. Moe once hit 1,500+ balls in a 7 hour time span, all of them landing inside a 20 yard radius. Greatest ball striker of all time.

Moe was remarkable - his confidences as a golfer was remarkable, as a person off the course he felt life was imposed upon him - that's my best guess He mentioned one time how he would, as a pre-teen caddie in Canada, sleep in the first hole bunker and be ready to "catch the first loop at sunrise." Whilst he says his hips hardly moved at all, he is referring to the takeaway.
And he hasn't really explained the second part of his Master Move, which is a Master Move.
The club falling back and the butt end of the grip point out whilst exaggerated creates a massive amount of unpacking of power. The butt then goes left and up and it does it very very quickly that is in a small amount space, this pulls the club head along the toe line then it is flung out, like from 3 o'clock - to the centre of the clock- then out 10 o'clock. WHUMP. Striking down and from the inside. Try switch some short wedges then work up. WHUMP.

I recently adopted Moe's left foot movement, it really has a stabilizing effect on my swing, I strike ball more accurately. Yesterday despite my left knee injury, with Moe's footwork, I managed to walk the 18 holes, and shot a nice 82. I didn't has presssure on aching knee as the move doesn't require a knee twist. Flexibility in the body pivot is one of the keys to a consistent repeatable swing.

The movement is minimal compared to average. Watch closely you will see how his right hip resists moving out towards the ball on the downswing. It pauses and then gets pulled around by the club after impact. You will see many top players who have this hip pausing move, most notable today might be McIlroy on the PGA and Ko on the LPGA. This controlled hip move makes the swing more itself controlled which you can see with Mo. He looks absolutely rock solid stable and in balance all the way to the finish. Impressive.

Don't be insulted by my imagined scenario here. I don't know if Moe's game would be competitive today, and don't get me wrong, he was a genius for finding what worked best for him, and overcoming adversity. Key parts of the "modern" swing emphasize the moves he explains. But I can't help but amuse myself by imagining this scenario-- at some point after the midpoint of the session, the interviewer says, "So tell me Mr. Norman, are you the only person in the world who hits a golf ball this way"?
Then again, I'd bet 50/50 odds it wouldn't even phase him--"Yes sir, I'm the only player in the world to hit a golf ball this way. Straight as a string, every time".
    Either outcome is hysterical.

That's one of the worst swings ever. Too much to mention everything why. But one important reason, he's standing too far from the ball. The only way to hit it straight from that posture is to block the ball. I know from in person experience, Moe could hit it straight, but was very short. Maybe 250 with the driver. Which good player wants that? None. It's much better to stand closer to the ball, as close as you can without feeling crowded, and feel flat on your feet in balance. Look at Nicklaus, he stood very close to the ball and had an upright in balance swing. He was the best golfer I ever saw. Moe was mentally retarded, he didn't know much, says one thing, does the opposite, just hit 1000s of balls until he could hit it straight by habit. But to be a good golfer you must hit it far and straight! I have seen many golfers on the tours that hit it better than Moe. LOL
