I was absolutely hammering straight drives with a single plane set up , tilt , 12 inch behind ball inside takeaway with a short backswing yesterday (7hcp) but I even was hitting it straight and hard into the wind with short takeaway tilt etc

I met Moe Norman at the Deer Creek driving range in Ajax, Ontario. He was by himself, and no one at the range recognized him. I stood and talked with him for an hour while hit balls. A very memorable evening for me.

When I left High School (1971) I was a mediocre golfer with the conventional golf setup they taught. I started changing to a single plane swing and improved a lot. In the late 80's I started working at a golf course and the pro changed me back to the conventional setup and swing. WOW what a disaster for a while, eventually I went back to the single plane swing with better success. After a few accidents and being unable to play, I just started again this year after 10 of not being able to play, I find myself going back to the conventional setup and swing, disastrous. Thank you for these videos they are helping me get back on track.

You had my attention the minute I saw your bag and the OU head over. You instructions were clear and precise and makes prefect sense. I am left handed, playing right handed. I struggle with alignment to the point of pure frustration, but I love this game so much I will never give it up. To further that statement, I was invited all comp to go to two different Pro tournaments and I told both people, if I had time to watch, I had time to play. I am now 73 and still have the same philosophy. Good luck and keep showing those guys the right swing. Served 65-68 US ARMY 82 ABN / VM 1968

Todd Graves is the real deal - his passion for teaching Moe’s Swing is tremendous. He, his brother Tim and the entire group at GGA are exceptional at supporting my journey to learning the SP System - high quality products and terrific instruction. The Golf School was superb and I’m hitting the ball so much better. There is no instant pudding - you have to put in the ‘practice with a purpose’ but it works!

I want to learn hybrid swing Mo Norman and is it forgive me I forgot the name. Jimmy Seventos🤔🤔🤔🙏🙏🙏. Looks like perfect swing for me and I can tell by looking it would feel more natural compared to conventional swing techniques. I have a fused wrist on my right hand my dominant hand. I can recall purchasing a four day pass to watch the Canadian Open being played in Hamilton, Ontario, years ago. On my way to round one, I heard that there was a free clinic at a driving range about 2miles from the site of the open, being given by Moe Norman. I decided to stop and watch him hit golf balls. I cannot tell you who won the tourney, or if I even saw any golf at the Open, but I can tell you that for four days I saw Moe Norman hitting golf balls. It was so strange that every so often, the Open would call the driving range to remind the pros that they had to leave the driving range to tee off at the Open. They were as enthralled with him as I was.

Don't be so hard on yourself Todd, Moe said in one of his film interviews that no one could ever swing like him, he was self taught and that he is a one off, in which he was! I envy you in you being allowed inside Moe's circle and looking at most of the videos of Moe - you are with him! I am sure Moe himself made mistakes when he first went about his swing, would he admit that? We will never know, but one thing he did get wrong was someone was able to copy his swing and that was YOU! Thank you ever so much Todd for keeping Moe's name and golf swing alive to this day and forevermore! What we need now is a pro to win the masters with the use of Moe's swing, wouldn't that be an honor in highlighting Moe's presence here on earth

The is the first time I’ve had someone explain the setup positions and why they are creating a single plain swing. Nicely done. I went out and hit 250 balls mostly paying attention to the hand shaft relationship at setup. And had a great ball striking session. Not sure I’d copy all his positions but that hand shaft relationship was a good start.

Golf is all about one thing, and one thing only - consistency. I started the SPS last year, and my consistency shot through the roof! I restricted myself to just my tee shots, and my shots were not necessarily long, but nice and straight with a little fade at the end. This year I will incorporate the SPS to my iron shots, and hopefully the same consistence that I have with my tee shots will be in my approach shots. I'm very pleased with the results I'm getting with the SPS, and I look forward to continuing my single plane journey.

Even Ben Hogan said in his book, that you have to understand that the club is the extension of your arms. Eventhough his swing was more like the "PGA tought swing", he got it right.
When you truly realize that the club is the extension of your arms, there is no oher way to hold the club like Moe Norman did.
Just figured this out several weeks ago after struggling for almost 10 years.

  • @nicksellens272

I'm an 18 handicapper with the ability to hit it long off the tee, but with no consistency. Right, left, you name it. It ruins my game. With this mind, I spend some time studying Todd's videos and today I tried it out. I went straight into a practice round with no range time and probably did five single plan swings off the tee. Each time they got better and straighter and I ultimately hit my last one really pure and dead straight. Followed it up with a nice, flush 3 wood. It felt really good off the club - a different sensation from other good shots I played. For me, it was important to give myself some forward momentum through the ball. I love the fact that this is a formula. Can't wait to get out there and try it again. Thanks Todd!

I thought Moe emphasized the business zone of the swing. The only thing that really matters is the 2 -3 feet before contact and after contact. That is why not everyone uses the Moe swing. Other people find it easier to get high velocity and in the correct slot in a different manner. Todd is saying there is only one "easiest way". He may be correct, not sure.

    • @ToddGravesGolf
      @ToddGravesGolf  ปีที่แล้ว +1

There are many ways to get a job done (speed and impact) but biophysically, there are also easier ways. This is what I am referencing. Less body movement, Less stress, less shaft lift, Less rotation to get the same job done. Consistency is a factor too.

I would have been so much better player/teacher. I just couldn't translate Moe's version years ago with the VCR tapes. How you "simply" explain it now, has made me a more consistent player/teacher and shoot my lowest scores ever in the low 70's and I am 57 years old. Thanks to you I enjoy the game more now than when I was in my 20's and set a Guinness World Record. Even my miss hits still have me putting for birdies. Thank you so much for a new love of the game in only a couple of months of "completely" changing to a one plane swing :)

I never in my wildest dreams thought I could break 80. Wallah! For some strange reason just to vary up my game I would go back to conventional style 🤷‍♂️ At the end of the day, the goal is to get the ball in the hole with the least amount of strokes!

Then I paid for professional PGA golf lessons. I was shown on screen a current PGA pro golfer Adam Scott. I was then told that is how the game of golf is played. I figured the PGA pro knows better than me. So I practiced and went in for lessons and tweaks. Today I am a carnival attraction as the one and only human pretzel man. Coming to your town this fall.

All that time that Mo was hitting golf balls he was figuring out one thing...
He felt the best and most simple and efficient physical positions of the body to strike a golf ball perfectly. The two plane swing is practically impossible. Definitely not as repeatable as the Moe Norman swing. That's because most swing takes out all of those impossible variables. He knew the best way to strike the golf ball because he could feel it due to his physical positions. His results speak for themselves. Long and straight down the middle of the Fairway. Miss you Mr Norman!

Wow! This is a life-saver. I'm a beginner and just took my first 4-weekends of lessons but have been so frustrated with the inconsistencies that Todd Graves describes at his website, that I was at the point of giving up. While looking for golf instruction, I ran into the Single Plan Solution. Took and followed the Moe Norman swing (indoors) for a test. Took 7 swings and have yet to miss and had a natural feel or source of power built into it; I cannot wait to try this next time I'm on the driving range. Why is this "common sense" swing not the norm?

  • @natgolfpro1
    @natgolfpro1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

He hit 1000's of balls getting his swing to where he wanted then perfected his moves through a lot of trial and error. He didn't have a model to look at. What's being done by Todd is he's giving you the model without all the trials and tribulations that Moe went through. Moe basically re-invented the wheel to this way of swinging the club. Why tinker when most or I'd say a majority of golfers tinkering with their swing have no idea what exactly they're doing? It's like anything out in the real world, if it works consistently and is efficient then why try to re-invent the process? Is this swing for everyone? YES!! If you're willing to have an open mind and do the drills and compare yourself to the model.

Just what the doctor ordered. I have been using MY OWN version of your method for years and for some time it worked well. I was able to pull it off with my variations (which I have been adding to as things have gone south.) For example, I have never had an explanation of why Moe kept his clubhead behind the ball so, I didn't do it. (Now I completely understand why.) Lately, however, my swing has fallen apart because I have been tinkering with it and not following the method precisely. This is just the advice I needed at exactly the right time. Before I discovered this video today I had in desperation pulled out my copy of The Single Plain Solution DVD and am starting from scratch doing everything by the numbers including the PVC drill and everything you have recommended. It took some courage for you to stand up in this video and I respect that a great deal. Thanks,

  • @TeddyCavachon

Looking at Moe’s swing from the standpoint of the F = 1/2(Mass x Velocity^2) striking force how it different from convention was setting up at address with maxed out ulnar deviation in both wrists, getting maxed out radial deviation in the downswing then releasing it fully back to maxed out ulnar deviation again which whips the club head mass around the dropped hands in a way that exponentially increases striking force and ball compression. He gripped the club in a way that it allowed the wrists to hinge into radial deviation (lag) but only release the lag back to the way he aligned face square to where he wanted the ball to release off the face to target. His grip abruptly stopped the whipping action of the club just long enough to trigger the explosive release of the compressed ball off the face-why his shots sounded distinctly different than those with the conventional sweeping lagging swing-with it difficult to see because it happens so fast and raising the back foot keeps the body and club head moving . Two other golfers whose swing I studied used a similar technique to release the ball off face straight to target: Harry Frankenberg (Count Yogi) and Ben Hogan.

I believe in one of Moe's last videos he discovered for himself that all I really needed to think about was to simply swing the club with his hands and arms and the rest of his body followed in a natural sequence.
100 percent agree with what you are saying. I now stretch my arms more in front of me to check on my grip. If the club head toe is pointing to the sky and does not role as I am stretching my hands and arms in front of me; I am ready to simply place the club head squarely to the ball as I bend first from my hips then my knees. I then simply swing the club with my hands and arms.
Repeatedly doing the above simple steps; my impact to the ball has become more consistent then ever. Do I look like Moe when I swing? No. Nevertheless at 72 I am very happy with the results. Cheers

I just set up and turn from the bottom with rear leg planted into the ground and continue doing this till I can't go any further - nothing to do other than correct grip and set up / keeping the tilt at 15% all the way through till you have hit the ball then through and back up. All from the bottom using your legs - a body turn both ways!!! Moe always has said I never change my hand position nor do I the body does everything the rest is automatic. Is easy. The short game is the same taking the club up for different heights. Moe played by heights.

DeChambeau and Steve Stricker are two well known PGA pros with single plane swings; however, neither of those fit the Moe Norman model.
Except for the bend in her knees, long drive champ Sandra Carlborg's single plane setup looks the closest to Moe's. And just like Sandra, Moe could hit it over 300 yards.
Besides giving you the best shot at becoming a good, consistent, ball striker, the other major advantage of Moe's swing, which Todd surprisingly doesn't even mention, is superior ergonomics. Unlike so many pros with conventional swings (including some of the young guys), Moe never had an issue with his back or knees. No surgeries. Swing correctly and you should be able to play as long as you like without ever hurting yourself. (If you are seriously interested in getting it right, become a Gold member and send in videos.)

      Was it this poem?:
      What is Happiness?
Golf is happiness, for happiness is achievement.
      The father is motivation.
      The mother is encouragement.
The fine golf swing is truly achievement.
Man may lie, steal and cheat for gain, but that will never gain a golf swing.
To gain a golf swing, man must work. Yet it is work without toil.
It is exercise without the boredom.
It is intoxication without the hangover. It is stimulation without the pills.
It is failure, yet its success shines even more brightly.
It is frustration, yet it nourishes patience.
It irritates, yet its soothing is far greater.
It is futility, yet it nurtures hope.
It is defeating, yet it generates courage.
It is humbling, yet it ennobles the human spirit. It is dignity, yet it rejects arrogance.
Its price is high, yet its rewards are richer.
Someday it is a boy’s pastime, yet it builds men.
It is a buffer for the stresses of today’s living.
It cleans the mind and rejuvenates the body.
It is these things and many more for those of us who know it and love it.
      Golf is truly happiness.

    A brief story:
    I've subscribed to Golf Digest
almost 40 years now. I first heard about Moe from a Golf Channel infomercial on Natural Golf. They said Moe was the straightest ball stryker ever. I never heard of this guy who I thought was just an old has been from the past. In Dec. of that year ,1995 , GD. did a lengthy feature artical about Moe . I never read the artical and threw the issue away once I was done with it. Big mistake. Wish so much I still had that issue now for keep sake. If I knew then what I know now I would have driven up to Kitchener Ontario from Mich. to Rockway Golf club just to watch him hit balls on the range.

Brilliant stuff this Todd and very interesting. I've followed Shawn Clemet on TH-cam for the last 2 months and I've never hit the ball as well or as easily. A lot of it is similar although it's 2 planes and he teaches setting up tilted and bracing against the left leg which is bent at impact. Also, picking your target and staying "with it" through impact as long as possible. He also keeps it very very simple and natural, like skimming a stone or cutting grass. This helps the lower body do the weight transfer without any thought. Interestingly I always feel like I want to keep my hands and arms straighter at address rather than simply hanging down. I think Shawn also says that the modern game and techniques have been very misleading.

I think what your getting at is what he Felt, Feel and Real are not the same, what it feels like is not what it looks like on camera. You have to FEEL the golf swing, Moe said it best when he said "He feels like his club is still square 22" past the ball" we know that is just a feeling and he makes numerous comments like this. We have to try and feel what Moe was thinking in his mind, that's the Secret to understanding someone elses swing.

Just watched another video you had breaking down the swing planes and how conventional golfers change them. This has been what has been driving me nuts, I've been trying for the last few years to take the club back exactly as I bring it forward, because if you're not going to bring it forward the same way you bring it back why even start with the club at the ball, why not just start at the top of the backswing like a baseball player.
Is this why so many people seem to have the toe up at address, because they are changing their swing plane during their swing so that the club is actually level at contact? I always set up with it level, since I'm trying to go forward the same way I went back and get to the same place, and I wanted it level when I got the ball.

I’m hitting the ball in the middle of the fairway and everything I’m doing is working so much better than what I had been doing before. All I can say is if you’re not satisfied with your golf game try this what do you have to lose? It took me years to try this because it looks so silly and you know what even if it does I don’t care because I am playing awesome as a matter of fact, the last round I played I hit from the white tees instead of the senior tees and I still scored really well ….. So don’t believe me give it a try and see what happens

Good video, but a few questions left unanswered. Moe's palm grip required him to use clubs with the proper lie angles, and those lie angles were not the same for all clubs. Moe himself mentioned this, as he explained adjusting his various clubs using a vice, and couple of 2X4s. Also his clubs had thicker grips, with alot less taper than most of the grips available today. On another note, the pga put out a memo on Moe's swing, saying it was a viable swing, that should not be over looked. Problem was, no one back then knew how to teach it. Moe owned his swing. Hogan was the only other golfer to totally own his swing. Like I said, good video, but it was Moe's swing, that fit him, and probably no one else.

    • @ToddGravesGolf
      @ToddGravesGolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Jack. Nice name. Makes me discount everything you said here. Other than that, you are incorrect in almost every one of your assertions. 1) Moe's lie angles were not all the same - this is false. 2) Moe's grips were not thicker. I showed this in his video here: th-cam.com/video/NbtwprWqDCk/w-d-xo.html.
Who cares what the PGA says - seriously and whatever memo they put out about Moe should probably be ignored since they don't understand the first thing about Moe.
Regarding a swing that only fit Moe - tell that to the thousands of people who have benefited from learning it. It works for many not just Moe.

You are right, right, right, right, right, right, and, this is why the tour pros lose their swing time to time. It's too complicated and too damn hard for the body to repeat. It's why so few people can do it. I wasted 45 years trying to perfect the conventional swing for nothing. Switching over I had reluctance because I didn't want to look like I had a stupid swing on the course. Now I play golf. Single plane and shock my partners.

Great video! I just have a question, will the one plane swing generate a lot of clubhead speed and be able to hit it far? cuz the one plane swing restrict hip rotation for better stabilization of the lower body, so how would that make you bomb a drive 300+ yards? It looks mainly just using the torso to swing the club. I'm just curious, if you can respond that'll be great!

I have been working on this swing for a few months now… I am actually hitting the ball farther now, and IMO it is because when I hit the positions as shown in the graves videos, it allows me to swing faster while remaining in control for a good strike. The rear foot down with flexed knee + tilt definitely stops me from pulling shots with fast swing speeds.
