When and Why to Upgrade Cameras | Would I Buy The R5 MK II?

  • Watching typical TH-cam camera reviews often make photographers feel like they always need the latest and greatest gear. Often what you are using is perfectly fine. I was taught early on that "you will know when you outgrow your gear". I still agree with that - its only necessary to buy new bodies or lenses when you start to feel the limitations of what you own. In this video I talk about my upgrades through the Canon lines of EOS cameras over the years as a lesson. Would I buy a Canon EOS R5 MK II?

    The last Cannon I had was an AE1, what a glorious unit to use. For some reason I moved from that to a Pentax K30 which I still use.. Such a shame they are not around anymore..

      Pentax is still around - they are owned by Ricoh and still making dslr’s.

      Love that you talked about the limiting factor being the photographer, the lens or the camera! Fantastic video! The only cameras I have I bought off everybody else. I have an Olympus 5 something m2, a Canon 5dii and my newest a Nikon d800. I got the d800 because I inherited a 24-70. The only thing that matters is the hand and experience of the photographer (30 plus years here) and the glass. But gd new stuff blows my mind and is incredible! More for video than stills, but that's just a temporary thing.

    Tim, Nice video! You make valid points. Here is my journey so far. I was a Minolta film shooter. Digital came out at the same time that my girls started playing youth softball and I bought an Olympus something or other and started sharing sports photos. I was discovered by a local newspaper and my journey as a newspaper sports photographer began. To be brief, I upgraded to a Canon Rebel and like yourself, quickly discovered its limitations. Next was the Canon EOS 1D, then a Canon EOS 1D MII X (in order to have a second body and not swap out lenses). I used that camera for, what, 14/16 years now? I am no longer shooting professionally but still shooting, "normal stuff" I guess you could call it and I upgraded to the Canon EOS R6 mark II with a lens adapter because I own too many quality, fast, L lenses. I love this camera, and I'm glad I made the move but look how long it took !

      Very cool - thanks for sharing! The EF lenses work so perfect with the adapter no reason to give them up. I know you saw my 70-200 vid but I was out again today and it blew my mind. Isn't it crazy how good mirrorless is when you get used to it? When I pick up my DSLR it feels like a noisy, relic now!

    Pleasantly surprised! Thought I was in for a biking video, then realized this is a new channel. Photography and cycling are my passions too. Keep it up, please.

      Thanks! The bike channel used to have a lot of photography but as the pandemic took off so did the bike videos. So I created this channel so I could still make some photo content when I feel like it. Cheers!

    I just found your channel and I really like it. Your comment on skipping at least one generation on new models is a principle I've used for some time. It works really well for cell phones too. As a hobbyist I've found if you can make the most of what you have in gear is sufficient for the quality of images you are trying to achieve, then you don't need anything new. When your needs exceed that capability is when to start looking. I'm not a fanboy of Canon but like you, it's what I started using and continue to do so. I started with a Canon EF film SLR (showing my age) and now have an R5 upgrading from a 5DS. If Canon comes out with a R5S someday, it will be mine. If not, then maybe a medium format.

      I'm wondering if at this point they are waiting to fill up the line-up(R1, R5 II) before releasing a high MP camera or if they have decided it is just too niche to be worth their time?

    • @jimbruton9482
      @jimbruton9482 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@fitzwaterphotography9971 I know it's more complicated but generally higher MP with a backlit or stacked sensor means better dynamic range. IMO better dynamic range will never be too niche.

      Thanks! I've been full time in a mid/small sized market for about 10 years so I do feel like I have some practical advice to share. I watch and learn from the high-end, big city fancy guys too - but I don't think that is how most photographer actually live or make gear purchases. Cheers!

    Hey Fitz, I just upgraded my wife from a Rebel T6 to an M50 for $350 because she wants to start taking her photography more seriously. Was that a good choice in your opinion? I also picked her up a Canon 70-200 f/4 (she specifically requested a Canon 70-200 lol) and Sigma 17-50 2.8 for her upcoming world travels. How did I do?

      do those lenses need adapters? I didn't know they made those lenses for their m mount cameras

      @@DayumMarq nah they didn’t make them in m mount but the M50 I bought came with an adapter.

      It sounds like you did great! 70-200s are awesome and I loved the 17-50 range back when I had it. The M series didn't sell that well here in the US but they loved them in Japan. I hope she loves them!
