This is my first time playing any DQ game and honestly my first JRPG. I’m about 6 hours into this game… and I’m literally blown away.. neglecting my wife and kids to keep playing. The sound and music, along with the visuals are top notch. Can’t say that enough. I don’t like Pokémon games and I know there are similarities here but having faster battle speed and managing the different abilities, even clothes, swapping weapons etc to enhance your party… I love this type of strategy. Very cool game. I’ll certainly be checking out Octopath I & II and looking forward to DQ 1 and 2 remakes next year. Dragon Quest has a new fan..

Haven''t played a game that's given me a similar feeling w/ the story either. How the world and characters change over time will really hook you in. You will feel genuine powerful emotions. And you just get HOOKED. Combat was fun and never felt like a grind (it introduced a monster capturing mechanic that inspired Pokemon) Even on mobile it's wonderful.

I just recently (as in this month) bought EVERY single mainline DQ game excluding 10.
I’m currently playing 5 and its amazing. I saw a youtube video on it a few months ago and have been trying to track down a reasonably priced copy. Luckily I finally hit the eBay jackpot and found a seller who sold me 4,5,6,7, and 8 for the DS/3DS for less than half price of what my local retro game store had them for.
I also got the pixel remasters of 12&3 on switch and I already owned 11 on xbox. I also bought 8 for the ps2 a few months ago but haven’t started it yet.
And I also got my copy of 3 HD-2D.
But yeah, that single video on the story of 5 got me hooked on the whole series. I’m loving it so far.

Agreed. DQ5, 8, and 11 are top tier JRPGs. 5 was the first Dragon Quest that had a really compelling story IMO, especially in comparison to how basic the ones on the NES were. It was a shame that DQ5 wasn't localized officially in the West until many years after it came out because by the time it was ported and released in English it was an outdated game. Dragon Quest could have been a much more successful series in the West if DQ5 had come out on the SNES. I played it on SNES emulator once there was a complete fan translation and was blown away by how much the DQ series had leaped forward between 4, and 5.

I really liked this remake. One thing to mention to perhaps make the battling a little easier, if you leave/set your party members Tactics to “Follow Orders”, you can manually control them…BUT if you leave them on any of the AI settings they can react dynamically during the turn. So rather than having to anticipate healing or waiting until the next turn to resurrect or cure a status effect, your characters will automatically cure/heal in the same turn if they haven’t yet acted.

There was no real internet back then so I remember using a strategy guide. I still have that paper guide as a relic of the past. That being said, I agree with Matty, I don't have the time of my childhood to grind to level up my heroes. Nice to hear that there is an easy mode to just go through the game easier. I may get it now cause of that. Sounds cool to relive this game and eventually dragon warrior 1 and 2. What I would give to see Final Fantasy VI or Xenogears get this kind of treatment. Dragon Quest III is cool but it's been re-released so many times that part of the novelty of this doesn't really hook me as much as it was seeing something genuinely obscure and cool like Live a Live getting this treatment two years ago. The whole idea of taking these legacy games and giving them these makeovers though is still something I'm really happy Square's continued to invest in and I hope they do touch more of their SNES and early PlayStation stuff. Even games like the Zenithian trilogy (Dragon Quest IV-VI) would look superb with this art and I hope the suggestion of the other Erdrick games getting a similar update implies that's on the cards

When you play it without a guide you miss some nuance I feel. Without a guide you don’t know what reclassing does, and therefore you don’t know who to focus on. There are two classes specifically that are story related in a way. One you can lose forever if you dont know what’s going on, and the other you could be stuck with a terrible unit for most of the game without knowing they become OP. Yes I realize you can just hire someone at any time. But they will be severely under leveled. It doesn’t matter until the final dungeon, which requires a very good team. To sprint to the boss without using too much MP or healing items.

@ I disagree. I think knowing you’ll need a merchant later and not starting with one and losing him forever is something everyone should know. Also starting with a “joker” knowing he will eventually be a sage is also important. Game also has stuff like illusory walls everywhere.

Originally played Dragon Quest III when it was called Dragon Warrior III on the game boy colour. Then I played the SNES version... Probably 4 times. Then the... awful Mobile version of the game, and now this beauty. Dragon Quest III Is very much a self insert kind of RPG. You make your own party. You make your own head canon for them. You build your team to be an unstoppable force against evil.
This game is peak Old School. No filler. No bombardment with cutscenes that never end. Stat, and gear progression that you can tangibly feel. Exploration that greatly rewards you with loot, and experience. My only real complaint with this version has been... The world map... It's nice that it's in 3-D sure. But I can only see what's in front, or on the sides, and travelling by ship, or air is annoying because of it. Anytime you need to head south. You can't see where you're going. Aside from that. Still the same game I love.

    Dracky Quest? 😅😅😅
As for me, the normal difficulty already felt too easy, and even in Draconian Mode, I managed to get to the second kingdom *solo* and believe it or not, I barely had to grind (the most I did was search every nook-and-cranny inside dungeons and the encounters I had was enough to get me levelled up properly for the next area.
I'm just 13 hours into the game and I'm now in the Faerie Village (level 12). I died once though against 3 Prestidigitators (got too careless in the Path of Promise. I should've fully healed every after battle during that part when going solo).
In the original, you wouldn't even be able easily get to the second village (Reeve) solo without buying all the strongest equipment from Aliahan and stuffing your hero with herbs!
Dracky Quest for someone who's into turn-based JRPGs? I dunno... 🤔
If it's just the music, visuals, coziness you're just after, you might as well just install a trainer (if you're on PC) or watch someone else play through it.
It's either you still haven't understood how combat works or are just spoiled by other turn-based JRPGs with turn order display

Here's a tip from a 20+ years DQ veteran: if you ever feel like you have to GRIND, look for the metal slimes. They've been a systemic trope in every single mainline and spin off DQ game since the very beginning and they are there for a reason :)

This is a completely valid way to enjoy dragon quest my only advice is to keep it a normal and just set the tact’s to control every character. There is no shame in this and the game is meant to use tactics. Dragon quest is both simple and hardcore at once. It can be breezy but when you play it on hard and get to late game content you realize that the battle system is actually one of the best most well thought out well balenced in any rpg ever and is literally perfect but it’s only revealed under necessity.
Play on normal use tactics to control all the characters start using your inputs once the game gets harder. Also search every pot and barrel the slot machine aspect of searching the world is one of its biggest charms

Matty, it’s a sign of maturity to say ‘This is how I want to enjoy a game’ when it comes to difficulty or style, and it’s a good thing for people like yourself with a platform to share your experience and to tell others, that is ok. Having said that, having just started this game, once I ground out 4 levels straight up, I found for me the pacing is going quite well so far. I restarted the game and spent time researching stat growth and party builds, prior to that my experience was very similar, I went to the first dungeon and was getting owned. Anyway, thanks for sharing and being authentic, found your channel this year and enjoy the content.

This review is honestly really helpful, I've always been curious about Dragon Quest ever since I got Fortune Street as a kid, used to go to gamefly and look at various games and DQ... 9 I think was the one I saw. I forgot about the series for many years, kinda got back into shortly before hero's reveal for smash, but I'm hesitant to dive in cuz I've never been fond of rpgs and the idea of grinding sounds miserable, but you saying you put it on easy and it became pleasant, really convinced me so thank you. For me DQ works not because I got into it early, but BECAUSE it's simple, "hero good, dark lord bad, save the world" type of plot, and it's always a good time. There's charming and interesting characters, fun enemy designs, a lot of exploring, it's just a good time. DQ doesn't need more, and one of the main reasons I'm actually worried about DQXII is because they keep saying how they're gonna change things, how it's gonna "grow up", etc. I feel like DQ has already grown up with DQIII. Really, it's just timeless. Trying to make it into some more cinematic, grand, deep, provocative, etc. experience would just change the series in like a bad way. The series does not need that. But those worries are for later, I absolutely love DQIIIHD, and I'm sure the other two will be just as enjoyable. So, even if the series goes off the rails with XII, at least I'll always have these.

just saying the new post game requires A LOT of farming
    normal postgame:
    - a super long dungeon where bosses spawn as normal enemies
    - beat a superboss in under 15 turns, 7 times
after that the new postgame dungeon appears:
    - requires 110 monsters tamed
    - requires all kinds of jnique equipment found
    - requires 25 elfin elixir (you give them to an NPC, so you can tuse them)
    - a dungeon where everyone not using axes or whips insta dies and barely does damage
    - a dungeon where everyone not using claws or staves insta dies and barely does damage
(both those dungeons have super annoying bosses as well using omniheal, poof and thwack)
    - a new superboss to beat in under 25 turns
i didnt inform myself so after going in and the NPC telling me the dungeon rules i said to myself, fuck that i aint building entirely new characters just for a postfame dungeon, and set on easy

I really really wanted to like this. I've only played two Dragon Quest games before, 9 when I was a kid and 11 more recently and liked them both. I was really excited to dive more into the Dragon Quest series but man, I'm finding this game hard to enjoy. The grind is just so excessive, the random encounter rate is so high, so many encounters are with enemies that will buff their defence repeatedly, or lower your accuracy, or summon more enemies over and over, or heal themselves. Every 5 steps I get interrupted by an encounter that feels like it takes so much longer than it should like fighting a metapod spamming harden in a Pokemon game. I turned the difficulty down, too, but the combat still bothered me because I would think "What's the point if I can't even lose?" I wish there was another difficulty option that negated the grind without making fights completely unlosable. If there was I'd probably really like this game. The visuals are great, the music is great, the story is simple but pleasant. It's thoroughly charming, but it has this massive unavoidable black mark in the middle of it that's really affecting my enjoyment.
