It's called a Ranking video, but it's also a tips and tricks on jobs video in disguise. Take notes people! David out here telling you all how to kick butt. XD
RPGs with job systems are my absolute favorite, I always do a totally blind first run so it will be fun seeing how I did with my choices.
So you must like the early Final Fantasy, DQ III, DQ IX, the Bravely Default series, and such, maybe Phantasy Star games that has (limited) job classes.
If you can run three Sages, run three Sages.
If you can run three Gadabouts, run three Gadabouts.
Literally my team lol
@@jonathansoelle3825 2 sages + 1 Warrior (that got to 21 Mage, before class switching, so they can self-cast Oomph for huuuge physical attack) can handle any situation.
Including all the later stuff, where every other enemy casts magic nullifying and silence spells.
hero, 2 sages and an endgame-soldier with all the Abilities form every non-spellcaster class 👌
you really want at least one non-hero who can equip endgame heavy gear that sages can't, though learning all priest/mage spells THEN going soldier is technically the ultimate ideal (as long as you grind enough to have decent MP...)
Gadabout will always be "Goof-off" to 80s-90s children.
Was just thinking that lol
Always going to be jester, to me...but I will call them whatever the current game dies lol.
I’m a bit of the opposite where I prefer story driven classes like in FF IV or DQ XI over job class games. Not sure if it’s an overwhelming choice issue but I tend to stick with the basics over things like animal tamer jobs in job class games, so videos like this help in getting a better idea of the classes I’d probably ignore otherwise.
I like a mix of both, having story party members with their classes but having the ability to customize them. Like in Metaphor Re:Fantazio.
the wrangler does at least 4 times more damage against bosses than other classes and hits all enemies well too. definitely a top tier class.
At the very least they don't need Oomph. Hero with oomph and falcon slash? 280ish. Monster Wrangler? 380 with no oomph.
@@andrewhegstrom2187 my wrangler is doing 600 twice in a turn.
@@willh1655 Sadly I'm still between about 50 to 60 of the 121 monsters, but I just got Ramia so it should keep pumping up.
Yeah it pops off with Wild Side then double Monster Pile-On each turn. Easy 800-1k damage once you recruit enough monsters to scale it!
you won't get the 100 monsters tamed skill until CLOSER only having the FInal dungeon left anyways.
The female merchant looks just like Bulma, in the Pilaf arc of Dragon Ball... Neat!
Makes sense: Bulma was always flaunting her _wares_ in the original. 😄
@@Mr_Darren_Payneisn't she like 15 during that time?
@@ereviscale3966 Yeah, about 15 or 16, and very little shame.
and IRC Goku is around 8 or 9 in the Original Dragon ball.
Um… funny thing about Quest and Ball resemblances…
@ 10:06 "But keep in mind, the series is still finding its footing."
I agree, Dragon Quest is only 38 years old. Give it some time & they will get it figured out. LOL! :)
Doing a blind run right now with Hero, Priest, Mage, and Monster Wrangler. It's gonna be really fun what classes I'll choose at the end, cause they'll really pack a punch. The game has been really fun so far
Job classes are fun, but I think I prefer storyline characters whose job matches their background. So for me personally: DQ4 > DQ3. Is that a controversial opinion?
I would have preferred a mix. DQ III classes with DQ IV characters and story line.
I think it's fine to prefer one over the other. I prefer storyline characters, but I also really love that job class style games exist.
I don't think it's controversial, I agree to an extent. I'm not a fan of how you can change to any job, I would prefer a system where the guy who spent his entire adulthood honing his body and skill with a sword doesn't change to a mage because hey Alltrades Abby allows it! Now a soldier turning into a paladin turning into a .... then yeah the progression of similar classes makes sense. That said, this game really doesn't have a story line characters outside of the hero, unless they changed it in this version, so picking your characters at the beginning is fine, but again I'm not a fan of being able to swap to radically different classes just so you can min-max skills. The upside is you can play it how you want, something I do in DQ6, I'll have "Carver" stay as primarily warrior class characters again advancing to stronger versions, and "Barbara" stays magical, etc.
Isn't DQ XI kind of like DQ IV in away? The characters are set in their classes, we see a bit of their story as the game goes on, and their classes match their backstory.
Not at all! Story based classes & well rounded characters are super enjoyable, but so is creating your own party, it’s a throwback to the roots of gaming in my opinion, and a return to roots of DQ so I definitely love them both
Ultimately, the best classes for casuals are thief and monster wrangler. These allow you to find the treasures and monsters as you play the game and both are very strong in the early game. Odds are the 3rd character for beginners should be a cleric that focuses on healing.
Swapping classes will actually make the game slightly harder without grinding, but this allows for the opportunity to swap cleric to sage if desired.
If I made a tier list, I'd probably go with 1. Cleric, 2. Thief, 3. Monster Wrangler, 4. Sage. 5: The Rest, 6: Gadabout
Thanks for this! When I get the game, all this advice will definitely be considered. Have a blessed day everyone!
Every single vocation is SO much more fun, varied and balanced in this version than any other version of the game BY FAR and they ALL bring so much to the table for later multiclassing now instead of just stats and maybe one or two vaguely interesting utility spells like all non-spellcasters used to... I love them all in this game so much ;_;
My team is Hero and three Priests. Priests are surprisingly strong fighters in this game too.
The class change idea was really cool for it's time, but if you crunch the numbers it only makes sense to change 1 or maybe 2 characters to sages. Everything else is basically wasting your time.
Although I have been tempted to make the ultimate party:
Hero
3 x Pilgrim all spells -> Wizard Lv99 -> Fighter Lv99
The only problem is that would be extremely grindy and totally unnecessary.
(In the words of the Ben/Fred Savage meme) "Do it!" 😂
Been waiting for this one! Job classes are fascinating and so fun to compare to each other.
The classic David venom for the Gadabout was worth the wait alone!
LOL, it's so useless
I rarely think job class customization adds to a game. Sometimes it really works, but I usually prefer more defined characters. I wouldn't want to make Cecil Harvey a monk or a blue mage. His class is tied to his identity and character arc, and that's the type of storytelling I prefer. But, again, there are some games that do benefit from it.
I also don't tend to replay a lot of games, so I can recognize that raises the value for others.
I agree, and excellent reference btw. (Love FF4l HOWEVER, keep in mind this was 1988. This kind of customization for a home console rpg and these gameplay mechanics were mind blowing at that time...
DQ eventually leaned into your sentiment with the very next game as DQ4 has actual developed party members with their own stories and a defined role/class, but 3 really paved the way for not only this series, but a lot of jrpgs that came after.
People that felt the way you did was the only concern I had with this game adapting to modern times. Most players these days want more story driven games with characters whose backgrounds/motivations they can learn, but this was before that time.
I actually think DQ4 would have been the better game to remake in this style, but I understand the original trilogy NEEDED to be touched up more than the others
i likd what FFX did. Kind of had set roles for your charcaters initially but deeper into the game allowed you to learn skills and stats from other characters, like you could make Wakka a black mage or Rikku a damage dealer.
Always good with guides from people who actually play the games they talk about- I will use this when I finally play DQ3 remake.
If there's one merit that Gadabouts have, it's that their Luck stat is SPECTACULAR. Given that (according to the in-game hints) Luck helps base your overall damage, chance to Crit, and ability to dodge bad statuses, having high Luck pass down to whatever a Gadabout will become is a nice thing to have. That said, the class should only be picked if you want a challenge early on (and I'm using one now since this is the upteenth time I've played this game, and I wanted to try something different this time around).
Where my Bards at
Love the analysis of them. I've held off playing 3, waiting for this remake and I love the vocations. I think they did a great job of giving all of them something that makes them useful, even if it's out of combat. My favourites at the moment are priest and merchant!
Couldn't agree more!
Gadabout's last ability they learn is huge for Sages as it ramps up their spell damage. Painful to get to mid-40s on a Gadabout but if you are min-maxing or going for achievements it is nice to have.
I’m doing it now and the way my own gadabout has bought my demise in boss fights should be studied 😂
Monster Wrangler is my main dps with that double action monster summoning, also helpful for monster arenas ofc
I am still laughing at the the Star Ocean Second story character ranking. Opera ranking "B!tch is a house!" 😂
Another hidden benefit of Martial Artists compared to Warriors: their early game equipment is CHEAP and/or free. A good Martial Artist can do as much or more damage with a CYPRESS STICK as a warrior can with a Copper Sword. (In fact, the Copper Sword REDUCES their attack power LOL). Also, it gives you a reason to go after the Golden Claw in the pyramid, which is essentially free (if you can survive the trial to keep it), and is going to be best-in-slot for them for most of the mid-game.
On Dracky mode you can't DIE if NOT I had to use like 3x LV 60+ party members BEFORE takign those claw out to NOT use up 99 healing items in your bag besides the Golden Golems that you'll need to farm for 800,000+ Gold FOR the 2nd POST game dungeon has the Golden Claws to STEAL if you steal more then 4 sell the rest for like 6000 each.
Worth pointing out with the Thief that there are a few monsters that do react to sight, so Snoop doesn't work, but Invisibility does for them. I noticed a few after I started the Orb hunting quest.
This video was so informative. It helped me decide who I want to bring on my team! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks! I was interested in the new balancing but I didn’t want a huge deep dive before I got my actual claws into the game
Really appreciate the advice for Monster Wrangler. He already started as a Thief.
Thanks David. Please keep the dq3 guides coming.
I've reached alltrade Abby but I'm not sure when to change classes.
As fast power leveling becomes easier I'd like to maximize stat growth with minimal diminishing returns from losing half on class reset (assuming I understand how it works)
This is great. I would also love to see a video on recommended party combinations for beginning and post level 20.
I think because leveling up refills mp, mages now are better pre-20 to get some AoEs for a fighter and some utility spells
ugh as soon as the heavenly flight song began at @3:50 i had huge pangs of nostalgia
I watched highspirits beat Zoma yesterday and the monster rangler was his main damage dealer. Good stuff.
As always, you deliver everything and more! I now understand why my mage is trailing behind so much. Time to class change.
Gadabout has another secret: their last ability to learn lets you get an Oomph, but for magic.
Thanks for this David, suggest time stamps as people may come back and that’d be helpful :)
Although I enjoy games with set job classes for each character a bit more, I still love the job system in games that have it. It adds so many options and makes each play through different.
I went with Warrior, Thief, Mage then made my mage a Sage, my Thief a Warrior, and my Warrior a Martial Artist and the game has been smooth sailing since.
Monster Wrangler surprised me in a great way and imo you are underrating it. Gets one of the best new buffs in the game with Wild Side and Monster Pile-On scales with the amount of monsters you recruit. Very easy 1k damage per round once you get to the bosses that matter and even if you hate MW, you can change to one of other classes and pop off with Wild Side.
thanks for the amazing video david, it inspired me for my next video topic!
Glad it was helpful!
this is my first DQ game and i'm loving it.
Ive beaten DQ3 twice and I've never used a Gadabout. I decided to use one for my run in the HD-2D version and its giving me so much life. Nothing better than a party member that randomly shits their pants mid battle
love your channel David! hope you get to 100k quickly
I hope so too!
Nice! Can't wait till my Martial Artist gets to level 47! He's already at level 35 and i haven't even got the ship yet.
I thought I was the only one to power level before getting ship. I’m currently working gadabout tilll he gets all abilities at the abbey. He sucks so bad at fighting 😅
@@mastrblastrr I do this everytime. Switch between jobs to get all the best abilities then ultimately get 2 sages and a wildcard that are just loaded with abilities. A little bit of early game grinding pays off big time later.
Due to the high cost of that 100% critical hit skill STEAL Mad cap helms MP cost reduction IF yound find a BODY armor that also reduces MP costs POST game stick both IT and the Mad caps and that 100% Critical hit move goes from its high 68 MP cost to about about a MORE Managable 24 MP uses which then you can use with 400+ MP to kill even MORE Liquid medal slimes in the post game.
While part of me was sad to see thieves no longer being absolute powerhouses because of agility being factored into defense in the older versions, it was good for balancing.
I also liked that luck got added to the crit% formula.
New class-specific equipment actually made the merchant quite good. I kept one around until level 37, and he was quite good in battle. I'm also rolling in dough right now in part thanks to him finding extra gold so frequently after battles (over 130,000 gold, and I'm not even at Baramos yet).
Not in a position to rank them myself. X and the initial trilogy are the only ones I haven’t played. Wanting to roll with a cleric, wrangler, and thief to start.
Also. That goddess lady at the beginning told me that I was “selfish, but it didn’t stop people from liking me” for whatever reason. She seemed disappointed because I read a sign telling me to go left in a cave, but followed my usual instincts of going right just to see what was over there. She dropped me into a hole. It’s kinda neat how the testing area changes based on how you answer the initial questions.
New game: Take a drink every time he says "job classes"..
"I swear to drunk, I'm not God" 😂
Dw3 is the best. Yeah i call it dragon warrior. I love hd 2d remake. Its my fav rpg in years. Ofcourse the original and ff6 are tied for my fav rpgs for nostagic reason. I never felt like rpg has met their impact. Ff7 was close but ff6 and dw3 gave me such an epic high as a kid. I never played a gane with so much depth and character progression. Fav combat system which makes you use strategy even when fighting normal enemies.
This is my first DQ game ever.
been playing on Dracky mode to help me out and I’ve been having a blast so far😂
My team rn is Warrior, Priest, and Gadabout so I can get a free sage.
And eventually I’ll change my priest to a fighter.
Once you beat the game. Ditch the Hero at Patty's party planning place. Get everyone in your party to learn Critical Claim from the Martial Artist class... After that. I definitely recommend a Party of..
Warrior
Martial Artist
Thief
Sage
But only... ONLY after you've collected all the monsters. A monster Wrangler in your party will ensure that recruitable monsters won't run ever. If you're going for the completionist route at least. The thief in the end game can steal AMAZING gear at the end of battles, and even more seeds than normal. The Hero has great spells, and what have you, but they end up falling behind the other classes once you start changing jobs to get skills, and stats.
I could do that but since you CAN set the hero to Auto Battle mode its not really needed to replace him/her in the post game.
It's mainly due to their limited skills. Some of the post game bosses. You're going to want everyone to have access to the best skills possible, and Sadly Hero is lacking in that category. During the normal game they're great~! But once you get to that point... You'll find making a new maxed out character to be beneficial.
But Due to Dracky mode = you can't realy die It's not really need besides I'm already at the final dungeon NOT post game at like 65 hours Hero lv 99 all my others about HALF that but before beating the final boss I want my other 3x Non hero's TO be at lv 99 before I eventually kick OUT the Hero party member and spend ANOTHER 60+ hours leveling them up.
I started with Mage, Thief and Wrangler. Mage classed to Sage, and Thief to Warrior. I'm not sure if I want to keep Monster Wrangler the same for the whole run or reclass it to Martial Artist once it has Beast Mode.
Love your analysis here. I wish I had picked a priest instead of a mage
Glad you enjoyed!
You and me bro, got it on switch for the feels since they were always a Nintendo game!
Hey David :) Gadabout and Merchant is still bad, I would have put mage above merchant because at least they can use poison needle and assassin's dagger for metal killing. Rescuing 50 monsters gets you one of the best rings in game.
Sylvando is a Minstrel not a Gadabout
It's really not that different might as well be the same thing
@ uh they are very different
Minstrels are Jack of all trades classes
I was surprised how much i loved the fighter class over the mage! Really enjoying the game it just makes me feel like a kid again and the music is wonderful! I hope Dragon quest 4 thru 6 will get the same treatment the first three games are getting. As much as i love this game i do really miss having my party have dialogue & personalities, with their own struggles and backstory! Also David what would you like to see done in the new Dragon quest game that has not been done before?!
So it wasn't just me who thought the mage was made of paper. I like the class but I changed mine into a martial artist. Just wasn't worth it with how easily he died.
Definitely planning a 2 Sage/2 Melee (hero and debating the other). Said melee non-hero started as a Priest so I can have emergency healing on all four characters.
My monster wrangler was doing 900 damage a turn to baramos. That class is overpowered if you catch monsters
Warriors and Martial Artists have MP now!!! ❤❤❤
Gotta hard carry / invest clown class. If you can drag him into late game, he becomes a beast when he turns into sage. Clown class is a burden but its worth it. Otherwise, i think every class except mage is good. Mage could be good but even with armors and defense seeds he still gets killed by 1 atatck. Mage is not very good but the martial artist is a great class. Those top numbers critical are delicious. Merchent and thief are ok fighters with lots of financial money utility. Lasty, on draconian you need to farm for hours for gold snd exp best to get a boomerangs set up for random trash and a single stroke damage build for bosses. Goodluck all.
Can you make a guide for Party/Job leveling guide. Like an example would be Merchant > Mage > Warrior or something like that but for all 4 party members
Job class rankings with David
You've been warned by one NPC from the starting area, about Gadabout the they are dead weight.
My God! I can’t wait to play this. I beat Refantazio, now I’m on Mario and Luigi BrotherShip. What I notice about DQ6 when the Gadabout is training I just put him as the back up members so he doesn’t mess my main party up. 😂
I did the same thing! Lol
@ yeah! I’m really loving all the older DQ’s I didn’t get a chance to play. 1-6 is on mobile devices.
Same here Especially since DQ6 has that 1 well that has LV 40+ enemies in it a INFINITE JOB class level cap of 99 but using Gadabout their in MAIN party their is really a bad idea.
While you can't DIE In DQ3's Dracky mode nearly ALL the OTHER DQ games starting with the 4th one have Required can't WIN and boss fights ones where your HP MUST hit zero so if those DQ games everv get a Dracky/can't DIE mode it would have to NOT work for can't win and must DIE boss fights.
DQ7 has at least 3 of those.
Ironically; even though the mage is kinda underwhelming in this game, this is probably the most balanced version of DQ3 at least in terms of classes.
I changed my Gadabout to sage. Can you also use the words of wisdom to change a mage to sage. Is it worth it to have 2 sages?
You can and it is!
Had to stop for a sec and laugh at the name you gave the Gadabout.
I prefer promotions over job classes.
Home-office software developer is a great job class. No adventuring skills though.
Another great/excellent video for this new RPG game.
Was thinking of making a new file pretty soon but been having trouble with what classes to have in the start of the game. Thanks for telling me the merchant can use whips and boomerangs. Was going to Cleric to have a good healer with the Martial Artist and Merchant; but now I am considering what you told about how good the Monster Tamer is with all his/her potential. Plus, making him/her into a Saga with double actions (might want to remind me how you get that ability) is pretty awesome and makes him/her many times more useful. Thanks for all the tips!
Just wondering, what you suggest I change my merchant into class wise once I get all HER spells/abilities? Thinking of changing my monster Tamer to a sage of course and maybe my martial artist to a Cleric to have a Stronger, faster and hard-hitting healer, unless you think otherwise since you don't recommend one in late game, even with great healing abilities.
Last thing. I learn in another video that having a monster tamer to be able to heal before/after getting the Gold Claws in the Pyramid makes the journey more tolerable.
I just have 1 question: In DQIX you can see the abilities the classes learn in the menu, are you able to do that with this game?
I would have to disagree with the merchant just because I'm playing on the hardest difficulty . Not only does he summon an inn but he summons a priest wherever you are . Also on hard you get less gold and when you use him he sometimes collects extra gold after battles . I'd say he's essential if playing hard mode but hard mode only
I beat the GBC port of the game with a Soldier/Warrior and 2 Sages. Does that still work for this version?
I started with Hero, Mage, Priest, Monster Wrangler... But in the opening hours monster wrangler didn't have any abilities, so i swapped in the Thief and kinda stuck with that so far ~15 hours
I’m running a Monster Wrangler, Warrior and Thief right now
I’m currently running a Warrior, Mage and Priest. Any suggestions for second and third upgrade paths for each? I was thinking Thief for my Warrior, Sage for Mage and Fighter/Martial Artist for Priest? Help! Already at Alltrades Abbey.
Really surprised you put monster wrangler at 6, but I get your rank list because of the utility of the other classes you rated higher. Still though, monster wrangler I Find easily outputs the most damage single target, assuming you have been recruiting all the monsters on the way.
My current party is the
Hero: Paragon
Merchant: Tough Cookie
Mage: Genius
Priest: Vamp
found merchant early especially is really useful for the extra gold, will probably turn the merchant into a thief and mage into a sage and Priest i am not sure yet. I know 3 sages is the OP meta but it is kinda boring.
I guess either a Martial Artist, Warrior or a Monster Wrangler. Unless you plan to turn your Merchant/Thief to a Wrangler later on.
@@doodlebugfour7070 I know you need a merchant for one of the quests in the game where you build a town but after that I'll turn them into something a bit better
@@edmundblackadder2741 You'll be missing a unit for awhile, better to create and deploy a second merchant for the task so your Thief won't be behind in levels.
@ ah good idea
Hi. At what level does mage and priest learn all their magic spells? I want to get all spells before changing classes. Thanks
LV 38 White Magic LV 40 black magic and LV 40 IF using a Sage.
Not going to lie, I prefer the standard staring group.
Guys new player here and I need advice on which classes to change to. I started my playthrough with a Thief, Mage, and Priest. Any recommendations?
You could make the Mage into a Warrior once you get buffs like Oomph and if your thief has good enough mp and wisdom make them a sage and have priest become a martial artist.
@ thanks man!
I'd put Merchant much higher, like bellow of Hero, cuz abillity to summon a shop is such a useful skill while you're on field travelling.
Great tips anyway.
Hi David thanks. I'm nervous to play this :) I don't remember the original but I know I played it at some point...
Any thing i should know about switching classes? Can i have characters that learn everything?
Yea but it’s a huge grind. You won’t be doing anything like that until you get easy access to Liquid Metal slimes.
There’s also not much of a reason to do so. If you wanna get the trophy for all learned abilities, just have each character go through 3 distinct jobs
Thanks for this guide. My mage was getting demolished in two hits no matter what I do. Glad to know it's just how the class is. Do you plan on making a guide for which class is best to upgrade from? Like is it better to upgrade a warrior to a martial artist? I'm thinking about doing that with mine and upgrading my mage to a better class.
If I could subscribe twice I would
Everyone gets so much MP mage spells barely cost anything.
Maybe it's my personality for my MA, but I feel like he started to fall off drastically after the Boss Troll fight. Physical skills don't seem to hold a lot of weight compared to magical, and he hasn't been pulling a lot of crits, lately. Hopefully things improve with him soon, dood.
Also, I reclassed my female Thief into a Mage (reclassing her back soon; I LOVE the female Thief), and she's the fastest attacker on my team. She also has the Dupli-Hat equipped, so she's been a leading force in quickly clearing mobs and ultimately the best party member in my entire party.
I wonder if dragon quest 12 will have the monster coliseum?
Wonder if the gbc guide would at least work for the mini medal sude quest. Then again I'm having a hard time finding the game locally 😭
What are those slimes on the Switch box and where can I get some?
I picked Gadabout cause I thought I could handle it....suprisingly not that bad to me
So from what i can gather the Mage and Priest got shafted, Though i didn't plan on taking them to the end game any how as my mage will either end up as a Thief or Warrior and my Priest will either end up as a Thief, Merchant or Martial artist. Once i'm done with the Monster Wrangle he'll be changed into a sage.
They're good for the beginning of the game, but they shouldn't be taken into the end game at all
I had found the priest and martial artist kinda underwhelming pre level 20. The mage still was useful with boom and blizzard
The Gadabout is really a pain in the u know what lol. I got one at level 30 but I’m not gonna take him on any dungeon or boss fight soon. 😂
What level does warrior get metal slash?
SADLY NOT until lv 39 when its going to be practically useless.
Disappointed with Monster Wrangler. The damage is decent but their overall stat pool (esp their HP) is weak
I always thought that Sylvando was a Luminary, ala DQ9, not a Gadabout.
The Hero is the luminary
@davidvinc That's what makes Sylvando such a great mentor to the Hero. Are the Luminary and the Hero different classes canonically? They do seem to be. I think Luminary was only a class in DQ9. I like to imagine that the Luminary learned most of his pep powers from Sylvando; especially since two thirds of all of the DQ11 pep powers belong to the Hero.
DQ9 Luminary was originally called Superstar in the Japanese version. And I feel the original name made more sense.
