  • This is one of the two battles in the movie Red Cliff.
    There are some dialogues subtitled in french, but you don't need to understand french to enjoy this battle.
    /!\ Warning, this is a spoiler if you haven't see the movie /!\
    Cao Cao sent warriors to fight Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang's troops... But this was an ambush, and the Cao Cao's warriors won't appreciate the strategy of Zhuge Liang.
    Enjoy ;)

    A brilliant strategy, provided that you have five times as many men as your opponent, an infinite supply of huge metal shields, all of your soldiers are perfectly coordinated, and the enemy commander is a complete idiot.

      I would put it even more harshly :D it's total BS. The amount of practice that your soldiers must do before mastering this would be tremendous, and tactical flexibility ... But all chinese kung-fu flicks are fantasy and fairy-tales. For this reason I find them really boring.

      I came here solely just for a rant. Yes, i dont understand why the enemy armies politely and willingly entered the formation through the gap instead of just charging through the wall.
      I mean they are riding a literal horses and the shield wasnt even as high that could prevent horses from jumping over it.
      What made me more furious is that the enemy just taking a walk in the park after entering the formation. I mean why dodnt they even tried to fight the enemy which literally didnt do anything as well

      The realistic strategy would be the one used at waterloo. Wellington's army used box formation with bayonets sticking out. Marshal Ney's cavalery could only circle the formation while being shot at.

  • @Cookiesdiefrombehind
    @Cookiesdiefrombehind 10 ปีที่แล้ว +548

    This battle is so different in the novel. The formation was supposed to be in a forest, as I recall and visibility was very low. Also, it was on a much larger scale so the enemy could not actually spot the formation. Whenever the charging cavalry wanted to exit the forest there would be pikes and shields guarding the exit. This was because the troops were all hidden within the trees and the lookouts would signal them with drums and flags.

    The scale of Chinese battles were often much larger than other cultures, life was cheap and a 10000 men is considered a small force but that is actually 2 full Roman legions in comparison to western counterparts. So that formation may span a huge distance and not easily seen by the enemy commanders. Also it is not easy to flank the army because of the distance, visibility, and the circular shape of the formation. A well trained force with good commanders and tacticians employing battle formations makes big differences, and during the warring years, all men were born soldiers. Its not an uncommon thing to have battle formations, happens all over the world. Just a few of these are more exaggerated.

    1. No, horses not crashing into a shield formation isn't a strange thing. Horses won't run into obstacles if they have a free way to go, like happens in this sequence. This tactic dates back to ancient egypt (actually first battle recorded in human history, Ramses II vs the hitites).
    2. Yes, this is most likely a lame depiction of what happened in reality. If not regarding the tactic itself, at least one could think that the horsemen would... You know... Attack them meanwhile waiting to see what happens.
    3. They don't attack because they are carrying swords. Straight swords. On fucking horseback. Good lord.
    Veredict: The basic tactic isn't magic at all. But empires of all periods of history (starting with the very same Ramses II that used this tactic for the first time) have greatly exaggerated their victories, to the point this looks way, way, way too effective on the chinesse part, and too moronic on the other guys (mongols? And they don't have bows?) part.

    You forget the times. Tactically it wasn't something you left in the open, that's why they created a dust cloud to conceal themselves as the enemy rushed in, how smart the commander was is irrelevant if you're able to bait them effectively. The formation leaves you with little choices because you either run and get volleyed by arrows or risk continued assault. Shields were also a dime a dozen. And chain of command makes it so coordination perfect and easy, hence the drumming to signal officers.

    • @thecreator4296
      @thecreator4296 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Regardless of the time, if the enemy commander is not stupid, they don’t go charging in without attacking anything. This formation was not obscured either. The shields are not particularly difficult to knock down with one person behind each, and you would be able to push them down on horseback.

    If you had smaller shields, and remember not everyone had one. It was more common to have a spear opposed to a sword and shield because a spear was cheaper. These tower shields are cheap to make though because of the fact that there is little shaping that needs to be done, it's just a block of metal. All that aside you still have no idea what's waiting for you, and that is granted you can knock the guy back. They tended to force these shields into the ground to make them harder to knock down.

I mean also who's to say also that the ENEMY will then send out heavily armored shield units or even armored cavalry in response to your cavalry and all the while when the enemy are free to spam-shot arrows from bow-happy archers eh? Though now that you mention it - back to this comment I had made - then again the other way to break through the formation is to use flaming missiles and projectiles fired from giant cross-bows or perhaps catapults which I'm sure would have been available by then given catapults would have been used since ancient times even prior to the 3 Kingdoms ... although the problem would be that the enemy could also have catapults set up, cavalry or even sappers to try to disrupt the catapult crew - but still fired from a healthy distance and firing spamfuls of flaming missiles or oil - even if you use shields to block it - I'm sure given the fact if the shields were metallic and metal being a good conductor of heat PLUS the impact of the projectile slamming down onto you....

    • @drafezard7315
      @drafezard7315 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      HeirofGojira91 Well they do use catapults near the end of the film and it certainly breaks through their formations then. I think the issue is to move heavy artillery such as this takes a long time to move and Cao Cao (in the film at least) is some what impatient to win the war. Not to mention that they would have to set up the catapults and they didn't know that they were going into battle until it was too late due to it being an ambush and such. Lastly if either or both of them were using some form of artillery I'm sure they would of used different tactics/formations anyway.

Such as the opponent seeing the formation and thinking ‘well, they obviously want me to go into those gaps...so I won’t’. A good cavalry charge would break it up in no time. A simple 5 man deep ring would be more effective.
      I think this was based off a formation called the 8-gate something or other, but there’s no actual historical attestment/description of what it looked like or how it was used. I’d take any mentioned of such complex formations with a grain of salt.

    this is the only film i have ever seen where the horses take arrows as well as the men so it has more authenticity than most hollywood films
