So sad... My husband went to high school with Melanie. She gave a concert and would always walk with a guitar on her back. As for me, being French born and now living on Melanie's territory in New Jersey, this is with this song we remember Melanie, for the French line "ils ont changé ma chanson." RIP and thank you.
Elle est super craquante quand elle prononce ces quelques mots en français avec son accent américain. C'était une grande artiste. Nul doute qu'elle charme dès à présent les anges avec sa voix et sa guitare.

I’d spent years of being sexually abused by Catholic Brothers and a Priest at a NSW Australian boarding school and under the dreadful pressure of a Mum who had Narcissistic Personality Disorder. I made the decision to leave Australia for a Government job in Australian administered Papua New Guinea. Melanie’s song voiced words that spoke to how my life (not song) had been wrecked and gave me inspiration that I could make “everything alright”. I did. It took many years, study and professionally qualified, before I reached happiness., Lived around the World but happily back in Australia now. In my 70’s now and still listening still listening to and loving Melonie’s songs! Thanks Melonie!

For me, a teen in the era of this song, it still is about that era. There was no dominant style. We had folk, we had rocknroll, we had jazz, and so on. No one knew where it would go. That was a special time.
This is the first I've heard this song. My boyfriend recently passed and I've been cleaning out his things. In the closet was a box of letters from his first real girlfriend in 1970, and a few written by him that were never sent - of the break up/ it won't work variety. One contained the line "Look what you've done to my song!" (Yes, I read some of the letters). That one line summed up pages of love and grief. Glad to have found it on TH-cam.
Dear Melanie, I can remember when this song was released in South Australia, I worked at Levi Strauss then as a young boy. When this came on the "wireless" everyone, all 200 people knew every word and mouthed it along with you singing. Thank You for making my day. Cookey, Australia.
I am so heartbroken to have just heard of Melanie's passing. A brilliant songwriter and singer. Your music was part of my childhood, Melanie....such great memories...rest in peace sweet angel.
Hi Melanie. Warm greetings from Australia 🦘 Thank you for the memories. Lay Down was also a classic. You are and always will be a STAR. I hope you're well. God bless you Melanie.
@@jon2849 thank you Jon. She died too young. How uncanny. I only just plugged into Melanie Safka last night via TH-cam. She died 24 January at 10pm. It is 25 Jan today as I write this. It’s a comfort to know that many from the current generation are discovering all this wonderful art. And, as much as their contemporary music is a part of their modern lives, the artistry, storytelling, vocals and musicianship of our generation’s stars is making quite an impact, and many converts, to genres they’d never have known, but for their reactions. It’s a pleasure to relive these performances and share their excitement upon first-hearing.
Chris Bradley It is not silly it is truth. Democrats are very destructive. Just look at how much better we are today under Trump in spite of all the lies from Democrats. They have become bat shit crazy.
@Mrs T Right. That's the problem - plastic bags. If we could just make them go away. Why I think Republicans and Democrats would love each other again. Muslims and Christians - they'd be dancing partners. Rich and poor people would share the same neighborhoods. Men and women would see eye to eye on every issue.
@@TheBeingReal sorry but I can't identify with that comment. Back then times were probably way better for me because of my young innocent age. You must be pretty old or I should say older than me. I don't have those harsh memories you must have.
Franaflyby Pretty old...lol. All relative, but I was prob 11. Remember well watching the evening news listing off names of dead soldiers every night. Lay Down, Brand New Key, Beautiful People, Look What They’ve Done to My Song, etc. Wow! Such unique songs! Haunting melodies, sung with such a passion. There was a fascinating innocence, and childlike quality about the music. Watching her sing, Melanie sparkles with those beautiful eyes. Honestly, it’s like musical, and visual perfection! No gimmicks, no simulating sex, no diversion from a talentless act( we know who they are). Just mesmerizing talent.

What Melanie is singing about is the Hellywood 'elite' who run the music industry. These gifted musicians sign a contract with stipulations that the words to their music may be edited (or replaced) by the satanic filth using double entendres that are subliminally influencing ALL who listen. They are damned. I feel for these musicians...they were tricked/seduced into signing these agreements for fame & fortune. She most likely was given this song by these creatures to 'tell us' what they've done and are STILL doing. Just one example: "Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard" by Paul Simon...is essentially putting foot tapping music to words about PEDOPHILIA.!!! Now, they are devouring our children right before our eyes! Jesus is on His Way! (Thank God)
@@gigicoyle4245 I understand that. I'm the art type who's had his work bastardized by locals. I saw Melanie perform at the Turning Point many times. She was always with her husband Peter and son Beau. She didn't seek fame or fortune, but she left at her mark with everyone she met. I remember one night a fan yelled out to sing "Angel of the Morning" and she said that it was Juice Newton's song. not hers and she sang it anyway. How many shows have you attended where you could talk to the talent and they respond back to you with kindness??
Rest in peace sweet soul. You gave us smiles and tears as we sang your songs with you.❤🙏🎶
If u can keep from crying, u r made of stone. Melanie, sweet princess, rip 1/24/24
I'm 68 years old and Melanie has always been one of my favorites. Beautiful lady, and beautiful voice too.

@@HAL-9000. Ich antworte in deutsch: Melanie kam in mein Leben und Herz ❤ in einer aufregenden Zeit, da war ihr Song und ihre Performance das was ich brauchte. Die Sängerin ist so authentisch.
ditto - I was lucky to see her at the Royal Albert Hall in the 70s
I just read the news, and I am sitting here crying listening to Melanie as if I might lose her if I don't. I know, though, that she will never be forgotten, and I say farewell but not goodbye. RIP dear lady.
I loved her singing in the early 70s and I still love her voice today! Thank you for your music.
Timeless and beautiful. 'If the people are buying tears, then I'll be rich someday'. Thanks Melanie x

Rest in peace sweetheart. God bless you. Thank you for the music.
Thank God we have clips like this! I'm sure that she's singing loud and proud in the heavenly choir😇
I remember this when I was a kid and now to hear it again is a little piece of heaven. What a voice!
For me, a teen in the era of this song, it still is about that era. There was no dominant style. We had folk, we had rocknroll, we had jazz, and so on. No one knew where it would go. That was a special time.
R.I.P. Melanie, sweet-beautiful songbird, thanks for the music
🥀🕊️🎶
God bless the soldiers.from down under .served with them in vietnam war
What sweet memory!!
Awesome
Yes, but we had the New Seekers version, more likely.
What a beautiful picture you have painted with your beautiful words . ☮️
RIP at 76
@@jon2849 thank you Jon. She died too young. How uncanny. I only just plugged into Melanie Safka last night via TH-cam. She died 24 January at 10pm. It is 25 Jan today as I write this. In any case, she was beautiful. If only we could all have that spirit. Take care and good luck. Big year for US elections in 2024. She won't miss that!

RIP Melanie, the sweetest voice of the early 70s.
No..definitely not..Jaquie MCshee of Pentangle had the purest female voice ever.
True, I'm keeping the vinyl for my granddaughters when they are old enough to understand it...
Hearing this song and seeing Melanie brought back why I was in love with her in 1971.
Copy that! Beautiful people, where have they gone...
me too, real love

Chris Bradley Democrats are really destructive.
@@mikewhite9818 Hmmm.... let me ponder that one for a moment Mike. Yep, that meets all the criteria of a fatuous comment.
Chris Bradley It is not silly it is truth. Democrats are very destructive. Just look at how much better we are today under Trump in spite of all the lies from Democrats. They have become bat shit crazy.
@@mikewhite9818 Sure... Blame the Democrats. 🤯🤣😂🤣
Brings back good times. Back when life wasn't so hard.
Franaflyby yup. Vietnam. Gas crisis. Cold War.
Gas prices skyrocketing (again relative to the times...).
Not harsh memories, just reality of the times. Most people remember the past fondly. We all remember the good and avoid the ‘bad’.

Not, perhaps, one of the greatest guitar performances of all time... BUT certainly one of the most fabulous vocal performances of all time! And certainly a classic video of one of the truly great live musical performances of all time! 'Onya Melanie! Love you forever! 😁
Technical prowess is not the point of music.

We now have tears for Melanie. May she rest in peace and the perpetual light shine upon her.
God she was great. Her vibrato is insane.
I love her and her voice - so gorgeous, lush, and strong - but that vibrato isn’t my jam. I know some folks just have the rapid-fire kind…but my ear doesn’t care for it. Also don’t like super-slow vibrato ala Callas. LOL sorry…it’s literally just personal taste. 😁
Pure talent, loved from the 60's to 2020's. OMG we are getting old. Thank you for the music. xx ❤
Me too😁...I was nearly 7 when a conglomerate album called "Summer of 72" came out.
I’m only 51…discovered her in 1989 and fell in love with her voice and message. We need more of her today in this troubled world. Goodbye and farewell sister!!
I Just got word that she has passed away.

Singers like Melanie, Joni Mitchell, and Linda Ronstadt are few and far between. The greats!
Women to emulate
There was a style then, like this, which came and went. I never thought I'd ever heard some of these things again but here they are.
Karen Carpenter
Also Mary Hopkins, Mary Ann Faithful, Judith Durham, and others I cant remember them all.
@@UncaDave Out of those, Judith had the most amazing voice. Hopkins and Mary Anne Faithful were terrific stylists. If you look at other genres you can include Peggy Lee, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin.
The cutest singer ever How could anybody not love her?
Find a French pop singer, Alizee in her prime, the song is Jen Ai Marre, she's dancing while singing in all black with two guitar players, quite possibly the prettiest woman I ever saw.

If you like singing and you say you are shy,
Well just sing and to hell with what anyone else thinks about your singing,
It’s not their life it’s yours to enjoy and do whatever you want with it,
Do you tell people how to enjoy their life,
You only live once and it’s a very quick life so enjoy it the way you want to.
If you have a beautiful voice sing to your hearts desire.
Let your voice keep your mums memory alive. Big love to you :)

This Lady is awesome, no if's or buts.
I'm 39yrs old and this is the 1st time I've heard this song. Wow does it ever cut deep.😢 ❤
Right? I heard this over and over in the 70's from a friend of mine's dad and it STILL haunts me! I love this song.
What I, personally don't get (and never will) is why a Korean war vet found this so interesting that he'd play it over and over to the point of me recalling it all these years.
