In 1969 I had flown to Honolulu to meet my husband that was on R&R from Vietnam. It was October. He was "short" and coming home in December, which would have been his 21st birthday. As he was boarding the plane back to Vietnam this song came on. I watched his plane fly off as long as I could see it. On November 8, came the knock on the door saying my husband was on a helicopter that went down in the jungle, and all 6 people were MIA. Their bodies were recovered in 1973 and returned home to America. I will never forget this song and the meaning it had that day.

My husband and I were married in 1968, he had served in Vietnam. After we were married his new job required that he traveled a lot. This song came to mean so much to both of us. Denver has perfect pitch. Nobody could do justice to this slow little tear jerking melody. But, Peter Paul and Mary got the song from Denver and recorded first, and it's a good sounding song from that trio. My mom and dad ate at a buffet restaurant and John Dutchendorf was sitting a few tables away. Nobody was bothering him at all. He and mom happened to go to the buffet at the same time. They struck up a conversation and John came to mom's table to sit and talk and eat a plate because he was alone, and he said, because he was lonely. My mom could cheer anybody up, and he gave her a hug before going back to his own table. Lovely day for all 3 of them.

I remember seeing him in concert in Ames, Iowa at the Hilton Coliseum. I think it was 1974, and I was nine or ten. I had, and still have the LP Annie's Song and two other LP's. My wife and I had tickets to see him in the early to mid 90's at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. I bought the tickets I think in February; I remember it was cold and I walked the skyways back to my office many blocks away. I was devastated when he passed that year. If I hadn't been as hard up for cash I would have kept the tickets instead of getting my money back. So sad when his plane went down in the ocean just off shore. We had a friend who was a part of Windstar and got to meet him. It is sad when the gifted pass, especially when they are still unselfishly giving their gifts to the world.
Whats the point in voting when its rigged? 2008 and 2012 we had dead people voting, 2016 it was the Russians and 2020 has reached levels never seen before in a US election. Doesn't matter who you vote for it will always be some rich person who could give two shits about the middle class. Every 4 years we are promised change but once they get into office its back to business as usual, with small tokens given to the people that voted for them. You're literally better off just not caring about it and save yourself the stress and time. Life it too short to worry about things that are out of our control.
It's the same people who hire both parties and all politicians they can pay off our blackmail to get what they want. They control the media so you get brainwashed and they blacklist all real news and give you one sided half cocked tales to make you react how they want. The war is nothing but theater for them and we are all cattle and cannon fodder.
19th August - my late grandfathers birthday 1972 - the year my mother was born my two favourite people in the entire universe. Cass Elliot and John Denver - my all time favourite musicians ever. and of course, leaving on a jet plane is most favoured. this video means an awful lot to me
And flying on an Airplane, everybody dressed like they were going to church and were all well mannered and enjoyable to chat with. Kids well behaved. Cause if you misbehaved, dad would open the door the aircraft and throw you out for embarrassing the family.
This is the best version of this song by far, recorded, live, or sung by others. Cass and John’s voices are pure heaven. Gives me goosebumps every time I listen.
Cass Elliot is now past 80 years and John Denver will turn 80 next year if they were both still here with us. The passing of time is an amazing thing. It is hard to believe that John and Cass Elliot sang this song in a duet 50 years ago.
Hearing these two gorgeous voices in harmony is transcendent. Cass Elliott and John Denver (and I have to add Karen Carpenter to the short list as well) had the purest, clearest, most natural voices of their generation. Tears well up every time... R.I.P. to all.
Everyone mentions his voice and songwriting talent, but I’d forgotten just how talented a guitarist he was. Listening to this and Rocky Mountain High from the Wildlife Concert, he was a very skilled player.
The Wildlife Concert version of Rocky Mountain High has to be one of the best things I've ever heard. His voice during that concert was probably the finest its ever been. RIP John Denver
Listen to the ending of "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" and you can hear he's got *actual* fiddle music at the end. Well, he could be playing it on his guitar, I suppose. But it certainly sounds like a real fiddle. All this time I thought that song was just *about* playing the fiddle.
Can it be 50 years??? God, I’m so glad these videos are available. They mean so much to me to be able to hear where I’ve come from; where I’ve been. Thanks John, Thanks Cass. You are missed and remembered!
I remember watching this on the Hoffman TV in my parents living room. Was only 5 years old but remember everything. The location of the TV-the corner it was in, the windows, etc.
spent years being mad at him for dying like that, and so young. I pray everyone finds enough forgiveness to share. it took me long enough. (I can't judge those who still place blame.) now, at last, I can enjoy hearing him again. and I do. God bless and keep you.🙏✝️🕊💜

I was a high school senior in 1969. My girlfriend and I were headed to separate colleges. I remember saying “goodbye” to her and then heading to a small pond where I sat on the edge and cried. On the way from her house to the pond, this song came on the radio. I will never forget it. Thank you, John. Thank you, Mama Cass. While the version on the radio was sung by Peter, Paul, and Mary, this TH-cam video brought back a flood of memories, all wonderful, all part of the fabric of my life.
Have you ever re-united with your girlfriend from 1969, whether it was by mutual consent or just by chance???? Or even just met up as friends??? I hope you did, whether it was romantic or just friendship.
My husband was drafted at 18 years old we had just gotten married three children later oh bunch of grandchildren 54 years of marriage year 2022 life’s been sweet God bless all our military men and women many stillServe many did not return remember our lessons learned in Vietnam God bless everyone WAR is Hell
I learned to never talk about this because people never believed me, and it was much easier to keep it to myself than try to convince strangers. Years ago my mom worked in a music venue, and she met Cass Elliot, and they became friends enough that she stayed in our house sometimes and even sang in our living room. I was pretty young and didn't know she was famous even when I saw her on TV sometimes. My mom was inconsolable when Momma Cass died. I finally understood what famous even meant and that she was in fact famous when they were talking about her death on the radio and TV. Johnny & June Cash also came to our house once in a while, and I remember meeting them for breakfast with my mom. I now know what magic touched my life all those years ago and how lucky I was indeed. Hearing these voices all these years later always gives me goosebumps.
No song since 1974. (There was so much great stuff up until '74, and then (almost) nothing...I'll never understand how we went from this to Justin Beiber.)
Always drives me crazy that many see Denver as a dork or a lightweight. He is (was) super-talented, multi-faceted, this song being an example with such an epic pre-chorus and chorus.
I guess I need to read try to what they just said I love to his music and I think he was extremely talented and I missed new songs that he will never write at least in this life
He was also a very generous performer. Never minded sharing the stage. My very favorite of his is a song he recorded with Russian singer Alexander Gradsky called What Are We Making Weapons For.
I turned 21 in 1969 in Vietnam. This song has special meaning to me. I met my wife that year she wrote to me that whole year and we met when I returned. 50 years of marriage three children 7 grandchildren. Great memories.

He truly was a gift as was Cass Elliot. Both gone too soon and too young
51 years later still enjoying this song
What kind of magical music would both of these wonderful artists have produced if they were still with us ? I believe they would have been superb !
Mama Cass talking about the importance to vote. Yes, do it this November!! RIP Cass Elliot & John Denver. They are so missed today.
They really appeared to like each other. I wish things were that simple today.
@@KrolKaz At least until this year they pretended to not be communists.....soon we will be flying the CCP flag
It's the same people who hire both parties and all politicians they can pay off our blackmail to get what they want. They control the media so you get brainwashed and they blacklist all real news and give you one sided half cocked tales to make you react how they want. The war is nothing but theater for them and we are all cattle and cannon fodder.
She gave a strong message.
Mama Cass could easily make that same speech today in 2020, maybe we've not learned much in nearly 50 years?
@Just Looking
But look at all the Americans quite rightly moaning about Trump now - many of whom didn't vote.
voting in federal elections is a false hope ...shits bought and paid for
Leon WP so true
steve O I’m
Wow! My exact thought!!
Tv was so great back then. Glad I am old enough to remember watching this what it originally aired. Music in the USA back then was amazing. ☮️💟
19th August - my late grandfathers birthday
1972 - the year my mother was born
my two favourite people in the entire universe. Cass Elliot and John Denver - my all time favourite musicians ever. and of course, leaving on a jet plane is most favoured. this video means an awful lot to me
John Denver is just about the finest American troubador who ever lived.
American Icon. Patriot.
The most clear, soothing, beautiful voice of any contemporary American singer.
I'd say King George tops the list though.
@@motarded4214 not sure about that.............James Taylor ?................Don McLean?
Townes Van Zandt...?
john denver the voice of an angel and this from a man who loves punk rock and rock
Love the well-mannered audience. No annoying cell phones, no hooting and hollering. I miss those times.
Amen❣️
And flying on an Airplane, everybody dressed like they were going to church and were all well mannered and enjoyable to chat with. Kids well behaved. Cause if you misbehaved, dad would open the door the aircraft and throw you out for embarrassing the family.
Me too
Have you ever looked at a Beatles concert? Hooting and hollering was definitely a thing back then.
Respect
Such an effortless performance that outshines anything you’ll see on today’s stage.
He left on a plane then joined the angels in heaven to sing forever.
It's 2020 (under lockdown) and this song hasn't aged a bit! Such a gem.
footcandy except we can’t get on a jet plane :(
sky kangs
John has an amazing unique voice..never really saw it before..pure class
I'm with you. ;)
☝️
This is the best version of this song by far, recorded, live, or sung by others. Cass and John’s voices are pure heaven. Gives me goosebumps every time I listen.
Two huge stars together. Very nice.
When John raised his guitar to let those last few notes ring in your ears, legendary artists.
Both of these souls are so dearly missed...........RIP Cass and John.
1969 I was 5
So many beautiful spirits died young like Mama
💔
I was wounded at the battle of chew-lie this song helped me recover!!
One of thr purest most beautiful voices ive ever heard, love them.both
God Bless Both
John Denver & Cass Elliot are lights that our world needs now. 😔
Very well said , we need all the help we can get 😞
I was born 31 years after this performance and grew up with this as a lullaby… John Denver is so deeply missed 💔 🎵 ❤️
I love their voices blending together here ❤
Both John and Cass had voices like angels!! Bet that's where they are now ....singing with the angels!! RIP JOHN AND CASS
Singing with the angels… that’s a pretty visual and I’m sure it’s true💖
Cass Elliot is now past 80 years and John Denver will turn 80 next year if they were both still here with us. The passing of time is an amazing thing. It is hard to believe that John and Cass Elliot sang this song in a duet 50 years ago.
For sure
John ,Cass Eliot and KAREN CARPENTER toghether, very special.
@@michaelverbakel7632 like yesterday, for me
Hearing these two gorgeous voices in harmony is transcendent. Cass Elliott and John Denver (and I have to add Karen Carpenter to the short list as well) had the purest, clearest, most natural voices of their generation. Tears well up every time... R.I.P. to all.
Country roads jhondenver
😢
Sweet Mama Cass and talented Mr. Denver .... both gone to soon ... ❤... RIP
Hey how are you doing today?😊
"All my bags are packed..." My God what I would do to have us feel like that again.
hits hard knowing what was to come for John.
The harmonizing is amazing. No frills just talent.
Hello Susan, how are you doing?
I so miss John and Cass!! ❤
Everyone mentions his voice and songwriting talent, but I’d forgotten just how talented a guitarist he was. Listening to this and Rocky Mountain High from the Wildlife Concert, he was a very skilled player.
Oh yes, and don't forget his playing in 'Annie's Song'
The Wildlife Concert version of Rocky Mountain High has to be one of the best things I've ever heard. His voice during that concert was probably the finest its ever been. RIP John Denver
Chris.....I agree
Listen to the ending of "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" and you can hear he's got *actual* fiddle music at the end.
Well, he could be playing it on his guitar, I suppose. But it certainly sounds like a real fiddle.
All this time I thought that song was just *about* playing the fiddle.
@@julistarling8382 *he* is playing the fiddle. Look up a live version, they all show him playing the fiddle for that song
Can it be 50 years??? God, I’m so glad these videos are available. They mean so much to me to be able to hear where I’ve come from; where I’ve been. Thanks John, Thanks Cass. You are missed and remembered!
I hear ya man.
I remember this when I was just a little kid in the school bus the nuns would make us sing this best time of my life
I'm just seeing this now, for the first time. Sitting here with my oldest brother. We are amazed
I remember watching this on the Hoffman TV in my parents living room. Was only 5 years old but remember everything. The location of the TV-the corner it was in, the windows, etc.
Cass is a poet posing as a musician.
spent years being mad at him for dying like that, and so young.
I pray everyone finds enough forgiveness to share.
it took me long enough.
(I can't judge those who still place blame.)
now, at last, I can enjoy hearing him again.
and I do.
God bless and keep you.🙏✝️🕊💜
Their harmony brought me to tears; absolutely beautiful! Both Cass and John gone way too soon.
Me too.
And me.....
I'm a57 old man and that song brought tears to my eyes wow what a great song and what a great performance RIP Moma Cass and RIP John Denver you to are greatly missed
Damn...what excellent harmony she sings...what a voice !!
Aww John Denver! Love this amazing musician and Cass Elliot is superb as always. Amazing and wow! ❤❤
48 years later, and still so relevant. RIP Mama Cass and John Denver.
Its more than 38 right?
48, to be exact.
oops lol correcting it, thank you
It’s kinda amazing how there’s literally no difference between his studio/live voice
He was the same in concert. Amazing
I remember listening to this on 8 trac tape when i 7 in 1971 on green portable player still remember that
John Denver was so masterful as a guitarist. This performance with Mama Cass is just gorgeous.
Did you marry her?
Did you marry her
Thank you for asking. Our high school relationship did not blossom into marriage. Nevertheless, she is a person who I will remember forever.
Have you ever re-united with your girlfriend from 1969, whether it was by mutual consent or just by chance????
Or even just met up as friends???
I hope you did, whether it was romantic or just friendship.
That sucks man, I’m in my garage drinking a 5th for you 😢.. Cool song tough..
BEAUTIFUL HARMONY BETWEEN THEM ❤️
Hey how are you doing?
I remember Calypso came on the radio at work a few days before he died 😢 2 beautiful voices and talents.
First time iv heard this version & glad i did.
The harmonies. Pure and imperfect. Mama Cass and John Denver deserved more years and we needed a whole album of them together.
My husband was drafted at 18 years old we had just gotten married three children later oh bunch of grandchildren 54 years of marriage year 2022 life’s been sweet God bless all our military men and women many stillServe many did not return remember our lessons learned in Vietnam God bless everyone WAR is Hell
Hello Margie, how're you doing today I hope all's well with you??
One word..
Beautiful
Very sorry for these kinds of loss.
God bless you and will heal the wounds in your heart
Wish we could go back. Nothing about today's world feels real.
Never have i read such truer words x
Me too. That’s very true! I play guitar because of John Denver and some other people. I miss him.
Susan Johnson wow!! That's incredible x
its john carpenters movie They Live if you haven't seen it check it owt, its hella cray cray
hey Susan how's the bakingshop
Wow. How blessed are you to have such gifted beings in your home and life. 💖
Nice.
Wow!
Lucky indeed, just smile!
proof? pics?
Gawd I was so in love with him when I was 16 !!!
Hey how are you doing today?😊
I have had this song stuck in my head for years.
No autotune needed for these two!...
So perfect!
I don't think any song recorded in the last 20 years could go up against this beautiful song
No song since 1974. (There was so much great stuff up until '74, and then (almost) nothing...I'll never understand how we went from this to Justin Beiber.)
Wow, GREAT harmony with these two.
Beautiful rendition
Hello Peggy, how are you doing?
Always drives me crazy that many see Denver as a dork or a lightweight. He is (was) super-talented, multi-faceted, this song being an example with such an epic pre-chorus and chorus.
I mean. He was funny looking and dorky but that doesn’t make him less talented
Yes!
You're a dork. John Denver is an Icon!!!
Two pure voices in perfect harmony. No earpieces just natural talent. A rare moment caught on camera. So sad that they are no longer with us.
