The curse of living a long life is to see people you admire and respect leave this world.....peace be with you sweet lady....the world is a little darker without your bright light....
I lost a dear friend last week. Every time we lose someone, a relationship ends, and that branch of life of our life ends. The longer we live, the fewer branches we have!! 😢
I graduated from high school in 1972. But, I was a Melanie fan since the 9th grade. Actually, what caught my attention was the song, I Don't Eat Animals. I know Melanie is no longer a vegetarian, and I'm not either, though I was for 12 years. But, I still love her and her music.
We were sitting around a campfire in Finland in 1973. Everything was dark around us and then someone turned on the radio. The Nickel Song with Melanie and Me And Bobby Mc Gee with Janis Joplin was playing. I'll never forget that, because I was high up north with my German girlfriend-the time didn't matter and lots of mosquitoes were flying. I was in a sauna for the first time even with a lake .This year I was back in Finland after 50 years-more south and when I came to Germany I heard the "Nickelsong" on TH-cam .I got a little sad because my youth with which I associate this song is over and my girlfriend, my later wife, died of cancer. When the tracks played, I cried.
I went into the Army in April '69, four months before Woodstock. When I heard Melanie for the first time, I fell in love with her and her music. I got married in 1976, and our first child was a little girl. The first name I thought of was Melanie, and my wife agreed. I am so tankful for her and the woman she's turned out to be.
I am an old man now...I guess.... But if I could be reborn...and live my life again: I would do everything in my power to capture the heart of this fabulous woman. To hear she has passed has broken my heart....... Another piece of devastation to me. Another....
I was fifteen in 1970 and my conditioning gave me great optimism for the future. Now I wonder what the hell happened and just feel a deep disappointment. Notice today there are no protest songs even though things are worse, odd.
🕯Rest in peace, Mel.🕯 You made a musical impression on our age. Tough to do, in a fickle industry where women were stigmatized & often dismissed. Thanks for songs that will always remind us all of what seemed like simpler times. ♡
Dear sweet Melanie, I was just 12 years old in 71 when I first heard this wonderful song and went and bought the 45 to play on my harmony kardon lp player. Thanks for such wonderful MEANINGFUL songs. I'm so sad that God called you home A few weeks ago. This world is a bit orphaned now without your lovely folk songs. Rest well dear Melanie 😢❤
I was shut away in a an old stately home wiv locks & keys & rules & regs,a home 4 naughty girls & boys, but there was an old record player that no-one else seemed interested in...& Thankfully a Melanie ,a Dylan, The animals , Wishbone Ash, & a few earlier Albums...I was allowed 2hrs at a stretch to indulge myself in some Melanie , tbf They truly kept me going...I think I learnt every word..xx
I often think her songs were dismissed as lightweight or twee, but they really do have a depth and urgency that hasn't aged with time along with lyrics that are just as relevant today as they were 50 odd years ago . A more innocent age of wide eyed wonderment that this world badly needs more of today. RiP Melanie 🙏
That a fact so many great entertainers/musicians are leaving this world for heaven. Makes me listen to their music that much more. Sometimes shedding a few tears too.
@cawilson5357 same here. I get so absorbed in the many works of each one and listen continuously. God bless them all and many thanks for the wonderful performances they left for us!! 💔
Lord, this sweet lady will truly be missed.❤She was so beautiful. It just affirms how old I'm getting! Growing up in that time period, I remember going around with one of her hits stuck in my head. " I got a brand new pair of roller skates. You got a brand new key." R.I.P. my dear lady.
I knew it! Thought that was hers! Loved that song. I was 11 in 71. I don't remember this one but we roller skated with our church youth group all the time. Now I have to go add that to my faves. Thank you🙏🏼🥰🛼
Just learned of her leave-taking. Beyond sad, I loved her music- her passing marks the end of an era for me as we were nearly the same age. I will miss this gentle soul.
This song reminds me of a perfect trip that I took to Clearwater and Clearwater Beach back in 1972 because that is when I first heard it. We were driving along and this cute, bouncy, little song came on the radio and it seemed appropriate because the area was full of parking meters and Melanie singing about having a nickel fit right in. It would be cool to live there and I look forward to driving along the Clearwater Beach causeway while listening to beautiful Melanie melodies! 🙂
So many amazing female singers back then... Janis, Grace, Sandy Denny, Ann Wilson of Heart, Melanie could match every single one of them. This woman and her music will live forever ❤️
I'm a teenager all over again listening to her songs. My friends and I would sing this and so many other songs when we'd be camping in the Adirondacks, the 1000 Islands and all over upstate New York and the surrounding areas.
Her and Janis Joplin are my 2 favorite female singers ever. Rest in peace my darling. I lived a bit more than 100 miles from you and didn't know it. I love you.
Last year I met a woman who had been named after her because her mother had been a fan of Melanie's. And so she could tell her mother she had met another Melanie fan: me!
A song doesn't have to be so heavy that it can carry the weight of the world. Sometimes a song can be light yet so deep that it stands on its own for many years and decades. The Nickle Song is one of those.
RIP Melanie. Your voice was so definite and distinctive. Thank you for your music and your contributions to humanity through your fabulous songs! Beautiful People and Lay Down are supreme. Brand New Key and your magnificent version of Ruby Tuesday were excellent!🕯️
Such a beautiful lady. Fantastic singer-songwriter. I met her after a gig in Manchester about 15 years ago and she was so sweet, signed all my albums as well.
Always loved this beautiful lady's voice and she definitely had one. She along with many other artists that i grew up with are leaving us much too often. I'll play her music a lot more now to honor this gem!!!
I was at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970/71 where I heard Melanie for the first time!! Oh my goodness. When I got home I went to town and bought her LPs. Brilliant.
These songs performed brilliantly by Melanie are just as great today (2023) I was enchanted by her talent and charm the first time I heard her singing years ago and admire, respect and cherish this lovely lady today, praying that she’s enjoying being one of the worlds most beloved musicians!
Am listening to this over 2 years in a global pandemic and a war and attack on Ukraine. This song is even more relatable today. Thank you to Melanie for writing this beautiful song. Melanie gives me hope that the world we live in can still be a beautiful place amongst these difficult times. 💖
First time hearing this, despite being born in the 70s. This song has a surprisingly deep meaning despite the simple sound to it. It is intriguing to watch her as she sings it, wondering just what experiences she's seen. Good song.
I named my first daughter Melanie after I saw Melanie in concert in Tasmania and a friend sang a Melanie song in 2018 at my daughters funeral service 😢❤

What a voice - can't find this talent today.
1971 I was 15. I remember her music. Very popular musician. She’ll be missed
Who knew she was still living ?
1956 was a good year. Thanks be for video. I never saw her like. She carries a lot of love with her
I was born in 1969, but can remember my dad playing all her songs. My dad passed away in 2019 still loving her songs.
Best year to be born.
@@Anthony-w7i5g Close guess youngster but that'd be 1966 (old enough to know hippies, young enough not to be one 🤪)

Killer voice and Bambi eyes 😍
She can fill up the stage, just herself and her guitar. That's a true performer.
@Genna Tuelz - If a person is blind & has good hearing, does it matter the physical size of the performer?
@Genna Tuelz Do you really think she's fat? Or is that a slang for 'AWESOMELY BEAUTIFUL'?

Fifty years later, this song is still relevant. Aside from the angelic voice, Melanie's insight is my favorite part of her music.
This is great, I thought no one could get close to as good as Nana Mouskouri's version of this song but Melanie did, WOW!
It'll be relevant for 150 to 500 more years or so.
