You could take advantage of the fact that the shavings disappear in resin to suspend objects. I think I remember you trying to encase a rose in resin? Something like that might shift around less during the pour if the empty space in the mould is packed with these shavings.

I know nothing about resin, but to me that seems like a brilliant idea.
i was thinking something like that! the first thing that came to mind for me was just using the shavings in clear resin projects as a filler, but this is similar and way more interesting.
Few downsides of using shavings like that is: It’s prone to tons of air bubbles on the shavings crevices, another is it might have different light refractions. The first one can be solved by vacuum, while the second one is unavoidable if it happens but it could be intentionally integrated into certain works

First thing that came to mind seeing the result was lampshades, I think if the light refracts through them well enough it could end up with some really interesting patterns.
Just about to comment this. That could look amazing. Could even go for a galaxy pattern. Using a mixture of different pigments. Black and un tinted for stars.
My idea was similar except to make big blocks of it and put some high lumen output LED's in there as sort of a night-light kind of thing
Yes! I think it looks like lava and would make a sweet volcano lamp shade or LED night light.
Or a fritted-stained-tiffany glass lampshade would be beautiful!
That's a great idea! Like he said, the fact that the resin becomes kind of moldable means there's different potential uses, definitely light would be cool

Have you ever tried colored resin shavings in a clear resin? Thats the mix Ive always wanted to see. I feel like the shavings would go mostly clear, but the dye in them would produce that interesting patterning with a lot lower % of shavings, and a lot less messing arround.

Yes, thats the mix I've wanted to see since the last time he mixed resin shavings into a project. Coloured shavings in clear would surely... *not*.... disappear???? 🤔 Would they?? 🤔🤷🏻♀️ Fun to find out though. And, yes, totally agree - glowing/luminous shavings even better!
It'd basically be like putting tinsel in resin. Been done before but you can get interesting results. Especially so long as you get all the air out if you do a full pour rather than just a coating like this.
Very interesting concept, icicle Christmas ornaments would probably look good using this ?
What if there was long thin(ish) aluminium strands in the resin strands , this might give it enough purchase to twist and hold it together????

I've seen makers use colored resin shavings in clear resin and wind up with ghostly whisps of color throughout their pieces too. That might be something to try too.

@@basedbane787 Bens Worx did it and maybe Pohl barn I can't remember exactly which other channel did it. The results are a little unreliable, but still somewhat interesting.
You can definitely pulverize the shavings further and use them as a filler/thickening material. Colored shavings encased in clear would look cool
That makes a lot of sense. If the clear shaving disappear in clear resin, then you don't need to pour as much resin for the next project.
Seeing how the bottom of that bowl looked, it feels like you could make a really cool Geode effect. Press the outside and edges so they are smooth, but allow the middle to remain rough, maybe even spiking it up a bit by hand before it cures. The inside would have a nice crystallized look, and if it’s done in a simple half circle mold, it’d appear like a geode that’s been broken in two. Could even use a different color mix of shavings in the center to create a more accurate and cool crystal illusion, perhaps purple for amethyst, or white/clear for quartz.

This is a great POC. You can not only add shavings to resin projects, but using them as a texturing and coloring shortcut. I was expecting you to add clear resin and vacuum out the bubbles. I'd be interested in seeing a video of that.
Epoxy shaving snowball ornaments maybe? Mix the shavings with a little bit of white tinted epoxy and cram them into sphere moulds.
Might be interesting to see how an LED looks encased in the shavings too. Light up Christmas ornaments.
I always hate to suggest it since it's easier said than done, but this might be a good case of coating a balloon in the mix and popping the balloon after it cures. At the very least, press them into snowflake-shaped molds.
That mat idea is so brilliant. What a lovely way to repurpose what would have otherwise been waste. Worst case scenario, the pieces from the mat don't work like you'd think, and you throw them away, which is what you would have done anyway. I like it.
Immediately my thought is to use it to make a never-melt snow cone 😂 more practically, maybe an ice bucket? Like for keeping bottled drinks on ice? It could be amusing to have bottled/canned drinks on ice inside of what looks like a snow cone

Packing the shavings more loosely after mixing them with colored resin, letting that mass cure, and submerging it in clear resin might make for an interesting blank to turn. Probably best to use a vacuum chamber during that last part.

I was going to suggest that, or pouring resin over it while it slowly rotates, like crafter do with those epoxy resin tumblers, would allow it to be built up and potentially smoothed out.
What if you made a lamp that looked like shaved ice? I assume the texture would have some really cool light diffusion. Or maybe a glow in the dark powder mixed in? You could possibly get a spacey nebula kind of result with a section of this in a pour

Shavings from dyed resins, maybe especially all the neon stuff that glows in a blacklight(that pops under normal light too) like the Turn in the Dark video(the video immediately before this, this is exactly what I thought of)....all those inserted into a mold then filled with clear resin.
That would be cool for an up-close view, mostly transparent but with these whisps of color that's not from dye swirled in wet resin, but from the shavings being previously dyed.
I’ve actually done this with jewelry! I’ve made small tests that I didn’t like, but then just added them into something larger and usually added in some more inclusions. The hard resin acts as a stop for the other stuff you put it and accentuates the 3D nature of what you’re doing. I would totally use that stuff as a bulk scaffolding for larger pieces I want to keep separated or make sure that something like glitter stays suspended rather than sinking!
As a person who recommended one of those mats to you on Instagram I'm glad you got one! Might as well get some useful tools out of leftover resin

Looks like other people have had the same thought but my mind goes straight to a snow cone lamp or string of lights! Especially if you could get the resin to pool towards the bottom like how gravity pulls the syrup down to the bottom of a snow cone.
I personally would love to use that bowl to hold wrapped candies in like Starbursts and Jolly Ranchers. Stuff that the resin can't contaminate, but that does look like a candy bowl to me!
I'm honestly really love the textured look it gave it. I think you should try using just and upside down bowl as a form and packing a shavings onto it and then letting it cure.
i think the texture would make really interesting stained glass panels. it would catch the light in really fun ways.
I can't tell if if I've been watching you for way too long, or not nearly long enough because I definitely expected that joke at :50 to just be the entire rest of the video. Not sure what that says about me.
I like the idea of coloured shavings in clear resin. How about making 2D art pieces, placemats or coasters? Maybe simply embossed with your logo as a promotional item. It would be fun to have a coster made from the savings of a specific project and help support the channel at the same time.
I have been watching for quite some time and I think it would be a fun idea to use the resin shavings how you did with this to make pen blanks or jewelry pieces. They have fun colors and it would be interesting. Besides that you could do glow in the dark resin shavings in clear shavings and really see how well they hide after mixing and still be able to see them afterwards.
I assume this was filmed before all the comments on the last video about reusing the UV pigmented resin shavings, still curious to see how that'd work, hopefully they'd appear as suspended ribbons of glow in the blacklight color
I really need to see the blacklight reactive shavings from last video cast in some clear/translucent resin! I feel like that would be a super cool effect

I'd be curious how those shavings turn out in some dice or something. I see other folks using glittery substances for cool effects, but I wonder if this can provide an interesting aesthetic as well.
I'd think dice would be tricky because you'd have to make sure there wasn't any difference in density.
@@FranNyanits all resin, the dye has almost no effect on density! Easiest way to put things in dice is to make them out of the same kind of resin. No balancing issues whatsoever!
@@idyllicart1 Not talking about the dye, thinking more about any density changes that the process of being shaved off may have introduced. You'd have to be very thorough with the pressure pot to insure every tiny spot air might have been introduced in the shavings has been filled and that all possible air voids would similarly be negated. Which would very much negate the effect gotten in this project (unless going with a different color to get some sort of swirl effect.) Just doesn't seem like a good match.

You said it yourself that it looks like a snowcone and I agree. I think a cute project might be making a whole bunch of tiny little colored and uncolored (white) snowcones and putting LED lights in them.
Would make for great Christmas/Holiday lights or something for summer to put outside in a garden.

I kinda like how they look, even just as a filler it makes some sense. the optical qualities worsen but not everything need be a shiny see through type object. the polished shiny stuff often seems "liquid" or watery. but this really does gives a sense of density, like it is something frozen and solid.

Hey Peter! First, love the video as always, it’s always a good day when a PB video drops. Second, I’ve been suggesting this throughout the years in the hopes that you’ll see it. Here’s my take on what you should do with the leftovers. Make a mold of your hands or your head, something that can accept resin over time, fill it with your leftover resin from each project. You can use the shavings from each project to help give the resin some texture and at the end you’ll have a nice memorial of sorts to display that represents all your hard work. Hope that helps!
I have been reusing resin "shavings" and different blocks and pieces leftover from cups and buckets for many years!
Great usage of a previously useless waste product!(biproduct now!)

I only do small resin projects as a hobby, but when I have shavings and little dried flecks etc, I like to throw them into pendant molds or 3D molds (like spheres or eggs etc) and make what I call "psychedelic" or "daydream" pieces. I also sometimes chuck little molded charms/shapes in too. You can sit and look at them, turning them to see all the different shapes, colours, patterns. Some will even glow in the dark depending on what random bits are in there. No two are ever the same, and everyone I've given them to, has loved them as a type of fidget item.
It reminds me of adding colour to desiccated coconut. I like to put scraps into the next project helps make the resin go a little further and if you have drips and bits in different colours it can make interesting designs.

Our former church used to do a bake sale fundraiser for charity around Easter time every year. My wife would dye coconut with food color to make colorful nests for jellybeans "eggs" for the tops of her best-selling cupcakes. Colored dried resin shavings reminds me a lot of dyeing batches of dried coconut flakes. Add in enough coconut and eventually you get nice pastel colors. Resin flakes seems very similar.

Food Safe, Mica powdered translucent blue resin(the yellow becomes greenish, the red more purple) in the bowl mold, in a vac/pressure chamber as makes sense. You'd have the hot colors of red and yellow, moderated by the traditional "color of water" blue. In a way it's yin and yang itself. Hot and Cold. Fire and Water. Blended for the sake of beauty.
Then turn finish and polish it to a ridiculous degree, coat it to be food safe, and use it like a REAL bowl!

Reminds me of those weird crumbly lamps from the early 2000's. I would encase it in clear resin so you can keep the look but it still be usable.
when you first mixed the red resin with the shavings the texture and colored reminded me of Shisha tobacco, the consistency and the texture since the tobacco leaves are coated in reddish molasses. Secondarily at the end of the video, I think the popsicle description was spot on. Super great videos, loved it as always.
It definitely has summer vibes with the colouring, but I can easily picture that texture with some blues, purples, and whites for the winter season to make ornaments or other similar items. Outside of snow or shaved ice, it really looks like it would have a texture similar those light-up, "melted jelly" fake Jack-o'-lanterns.

Wow, watching this process reminded me a lot of some decorations my mom used to put up for different holidays. I have come to learn they are called plastic popcorn decorations (many examples pop up if you google those words). One of the things I remember about them is one side was flat and the other side was very coarse, like the edges and the bottom of the inside of this bowl. My idea is to get a few colors of this shavings in resin made up, and then try to make a picture out of them on a flat surface. It would be interesting to see you try to recreate them with this new shavings in colored resin!

This is basically the principle of making fiber glass objects. Shavings combine with resin, the possibilities are really endless. You could make a chair, a handle bar, anything as long as you have the rough shape of what you are trying to build
honestly such an underrated material idea because it's actually quite practical, i'd imagine it'll save a lotta money on new resin being able to use old shavings as a thickener or as a form of texture.
at the very least it would clear the concense from waste
I Fully Support this Resin is a type of plastic and not just throwing it away to be Toxic somewhere else is good to see.
That bowl looked really cool! Maybe you can try using the shavings to make a landscape scene or something? Can also use up any wood pieces you have to make a frame, fill with some different coloured shavings, then top the front off with a clear resin pour. (I was thinking maybe you can use those mini canvases art and craft stores sell, but Im not sure if the heat from the curing resin would set the canvas on fire or burn a hole through it). Can't wait to see what other ideas you come up with!

I've been waiting for a video like this pretty cool. If you try it again maybe you could add the colored shavings to the mold without pressing them down and filling the voids with black resin after they set
Maybe if you colored the resin shavings with one kind of additional resin and then used those colored shavings in a clear or translucent lighter-colored resin. To create some interesting patterns that could yield some really cool results.
Like resin shaving dyed purple and left to partially dry and then stuff them into a mold with yellow resin. Or even do color mixing optical illusions where the internal shavings are colored with blue on the resin shavings and yellow as the main resin color so that the blue shavings look green 🤔

I saw the Murder Bowl mould and knew this was going to be fun to watch. And then you said you forgot mould release. The Murder Bowl legacy lives on! I actually really like the look of the finished bowl, though--lots of fun possibilities.

This video gave me an idea, ala murder bowl:
A light fixture with a cylindrical shade made of the blackest resin you can make, infused with clear resin shavings (could mix up the density of shavings).
I think that would be something to try!

I bet this plus some metal could make a really interesting sculpture. Barring that it could be used to make interesting light up Christmas ornaments.
When you were mixing it in the bowl it reminded me of the colored plastic straw they put in Easter baskets .
it could be really fun to suspend some of the shavings from your previous video in some sort of molded bowl like this one, make it look like glowy flakes are sprinkled throughout the piece. i imagine it'd look almost a peculiar kind of opalescent, though of course not exactly iridescent unless you were to do some additional resin trickery

I can see that making a cool lamp shade, or lighting cover of some kind.
There's something a little bit crystalline to that texture, which makes me agree it would be interesting with light shining through it. The fact you can so precisely mould the dyed strips interests me too. It suggests you could get more deliberate with your patterns.

Interesting! Makes me think of some cool combos you could do, like maybe purple shavings (like a dark purple so it shows up) in a black resin or something.
As others have said, this seems good for lighting shrouds. Could do cylinders, globes, etc, i bet you would get nice mood lighting
I think it'd be cool to make a blank out of this and then after it dried try to fill it with either full resin or stabilizing resin to give it more rigidity, and then see if you could actually make something out of it. You could do small little layers of it stacked on top of each other too and make micarta with different colors. Maybe if the other two don't work you could put little threads of carbon fiber in while you're mixing it.
I'm sure cleaned up and polished with something to give it some more strength, that pattern would look super cool.
The other thing is, since they come out clear anyway, you could just straight up add shavings to resin projects to give you "more" resin to work with and to cut down on the waste product. If you figure out how much volume x amount of shavings adds to resin you could use x amount less on each project and save yourself some resin and some cash.
That looks sooooo cool. What if you put more resin in after you get the shavings set so it can fill the scattered spots. You know I think that could make a really cool shaved ice, ice cream scoop handle also. Love ya peter you do amazing work Brotha 👍🤟🤘
I’m thinking lamp shade, object to cover a light source to create cool patterns. Candle cylinder for electric candles. The light would be amazing.
Now pour some clear resin back in the mold, put the hardened piece back in, pour a little resin into that, stick the plastic bowl back in, then pour more resin in between them to top it off, and you should have a nice, solid piece to finish off a beautiful bowl...
What I love about your channel is that you post a lot of failures just to try stuff. Not a lot of creators do that and I really love the "for science!" mentality
It reminds me of those old plastic holiday decorations that have a popcorn like look & feel
You could try mixing alcohol inks directly into the shavings. Then mix those into clear epoxy. That would be kinda cool looking. I have seen projects where they add chunks of epoxy pieces they have messed up and added those into the mold.
When I was a kid, there were these “make your own bouncy ball“ kits, they would have like this weird material that you would mix with water and then put it in the mold. The way the resin shavings look Reminds me a lot of those.
