I know a couple people have mentioned the dust and silicosis so I thought I’d add in the same warning for if you decide to do anything with clay or things with clay dust! Idk what you’d use it for but in ceramics one of the first things they tell us is to be careful when cleaning up dust cause the particles are really fine and get into the lungs really easily so I thought I’d share just in case!
I've been getting art therapy (don't know the english term) for over a year now and none of the therapists have ever mentioned that the dust is dangerous. Some people even sanded their dried clay pieces.. Kind of concerning that hobbysists take more safety precautions than therapists 🤔

I will say that we are told that people who are exposed to it for short amounts of time are typically fine as long as the studio is well ventilated but it gets into the air very easily so if you’re someone doing it for a career it’s dangerous no matter what. For the future if you’re sanding ceramics I would highly recommend that you wear some kind of protective mask and use a vacuum to catch most of the dust for both you and the people around you!

I think brownies done differently could’ve worked. I think you’d need to bake them, then let them completely dry out, maybe even with a dehydrator and then cast them the same way you did the bricks. Either way your end result looks amazing
I think it’d be super cool if you used the stabilizing resin to get the bricks a bunch of different colors and then cast them in clear, white, or black

For your next project could you do some kind of up cycled piece of trash that would look cool I resin as a handle etc? I like the idea of using things that would have otherwise been binned and turning them into art

Firebricks usually have a lot of aluminum silicates and oxides in them so they're pretty abrasive, no wonder it was taking metal off your bandsaw and turning tools. btw, Aluminum oxide is usually what's used in sanding/polishing tools and compounds because of how hard it is.
Not a fan of the brownie handle, but what a great idea to try again with the brick. The red you chose is really pretty, and it looks very useful. I may have to get my lathe back out and try some projects. Thanks for the inspiration!
Ah yes, I remeber the fire brick from Grant's desktop furnace. Never thought it would work so well with the resin, I was totally expecting the birck pieces to float.

This combination makes me think of dice for some reason, i think a set like that would be amazing! Although any dice set you'd think up would look so cool
Not sure if you know this or not but I'd be careful about that coloring you get on your HSS tools. The machinists I've worked with have always said that coloring is the steel getting to hot and when it starts to take on color is the same time it'll start to lose it's hardness from being treated.
This is why it isn’t recommended to sharpen on a grinder, they are too fast and then the steel easily gets to hot. (Which destroys the hardening, which leads to softer steel and the user having to resharpen the whole time rather than using a sharp tool and being happy) Better sticking to a machine with lower rpm like a Tormek or simply do it by hand. In this case he probably didn’t need to regrind the shape of the tool, only sharpen the edge, and that can be easily done by hand. Although personally I do prefer a low rpm machine. Cause I’m lazy. And there’s great jiggs. But mostly lazy.
HSS will be absolutely fine even turning blue. HSS can handle temperatures of over 450°C dark blue temper is around 300°C. It's a common misconception carried over from carbon steel tool days. Even if the very edge has lost its temper even removing 0.1mm on the next grind would expose properly tempered steel as the heat wouldn't have penetrated very far
Also, idea. Make a tall square mold. Get some branches and cut them to shape, then stack them in the mold like jenga pieces. Pour in colored resin and turn it. I bet itd look neat.
If I recall correctly part of the reason firebrick works so well for what it's used for is because it's got a very high amount of air inside the mixture, which becomes trapped air once the mixture hardens and trapped air is an amazing insulator. That would be why it's so easy to cut and break.

Very cool idea! What about making something with marbles in resin? I've never seen that before and could make an awesome effect with all the different colors of the marbles.
I think this would look really cool as a single solid piece of brick impregnated with resin rather than a bunch of smaller floating chunks, specifically because of how well the resin penetrated and how good that texture looks. If you can consistently get the resin to penetrate deep into the brick, ensuring that when you turn it down there won't be any exposed dry brick, it'd make for some really cool surfaces. Maybe a bowl?
Not surprised to see the firebrick soak up the resin. It's a lightweight brick made of alumina, zircon, and silicon carbide, with a whole lotta air. It's basically heat resistant materials and air pockets that give it it's insulation abilities.
Nice work man. Kinda figured that the resin would go deep into the fire brick as i kinda knew that there would be air pockets in it to keep the heat of the furnace(sp) in the furnace. If you want to due another brownie dip it, dehydrate/freeze dry the brownie first before the stabilizing it.
I 100% think the brownie handle could work well. If you freeze dried it first you could replace all the water with stabilizer. Also could work with other foods and candies.

Aluminum oxide, which they put in a lot of fire bricks, is very abrasive. You might want to deep clean.

Idk how well it would work out, but maybe you could also add some dark chocolate chips to it too?
He could have used a freeze dryer for removing all the water out of the finished brownies before casting.
Or brake up the brownies like Peter did with the firebrick with white resin to make it look like brownies and cream.

Fire brick is fun to work with. It cuts like butter and turns all your cutting tools into butter knifes.
