I know right! If the resin is the same density as water 1 gram = 1ml. One US tablespoon is ~15ml and that looked like 2 tablespoons, or basically a fluid once of resin. Unless resin is 50% lighter than water, that scale is way off! Plus it said "-31g" when he removed the cup, I doubt that paper cup weighs 31g if the resin was only 17g. Get a new scale! (or try replacing the batteries) That one has been dropped or damaged. Cheap scales usually use springs to determine weight and can be easily broken. If it's a true digital scale take it to get repaired. You'd get more accurate results by stacking coins on a ruler balanced on a brick....
This may be a long shot. But, I'd like to see you try to make a guitar out of resin. I have seen acrylic guitars before, however there rather expensive. You wouldn't have to craft a neck for it. Just the body. I think you have the skills to conquer
depending on the style, this could be really interesting.....(imaging a clear body tinted faintly blue, with little plastic fish and octopi or other critters embeded in it.. ) Would take a LOT of resin though.....
Tim Hyatt i mean any style would be cool. Could put anything on the resin. Skulls. Candy... Anything. I thought to keep it on the "cheap" side, buy a squire or equally beginner guitar. Make a crude mold of the body and cast. The soldering and re assembly would be simple. However the routing would be a challenge. But replacement necks are sort of inexpensive . so any, body style would do as long as the neck i mounted properly to the body. There would have to be a piece of metal somewhere for a ground to connect to..it can be done.

I love it! After I started watching your videos I looked up resins and I started working with UV resin. It's great for small projects such as jewelry, keyrings and small plates and boxes. Anyway seeing the mother of pearl reminded me of what I did with some pieces of abalone that I had laying around. I broke them up into tiny pieces to use in my resin jewelry. I'm disabled and can't work but when I start making resin jewelry pieces it brings me joy. Thank you for inspiring me.

That "smaller scale" project probably took him several days. Unfortunately, when he cuts the process down to fit in a TH-cam video, it makes it looks so much more simpler than it is in real life.
both pens are absolutely gorgeous. definitely something to keep in a collection of favorite things or as a keepsake for forever after the ink runs out.
Absolutely stunning & I love that there is no waste of the stunning material. I'd love to see other materials cast in the same kind of cost effective way. Crushed mussel shells have a similar pretty ethereal look but is a bit cheaper I think & has some stunning blues running through it so that would be interesting to see how it would work out. 🐚💙

Totally. What you want to do is use the highest grit you can after the turning. Since I'm a mediocre turner that is about 200 or so. That sandpaper will remove the tool marks and replace them with even scratch marks. The next grit will just replace the last set of scratches with a finer set. Then so on and so forth. It is theoretically possible to start at the high grit and get even marks, but it would take A LOT longer and more pads. Moving through the grits is much faster.
It turned out really beautiful. I work in a high-end mall that has a fancy pen store, and what you made today is definitely on par with the pans they sell there for $30-$40. Really love it, and it is a great way to use the medium without 'wasting' any more than necessary. I'm glad you have some more for later projects.
Came out really looking nice. I could see this technique being useful for a LOT of things beyond the mother of pearl......fine glitter or powders comes to mind as first but I could see doing intricate wraps with paper stripes - maybe finding a chinese finger puzzle, pulled tight to fit snugly to the brass tube and then glued, and resin'd (resin-ated?? lol) before turning down to size...
Kitchen scales like that usually only have an accuracy of about +/- 10g, putting them on a squishy silicone mat also won't help too much. They did turn out pretty awesomely though so whatever!

Just thought you'd like to know, it's because of you I had the courage and confidence to repair a wooden sculpture tonight. My brother broke it. It's one of my mom's favorites and she'd already had a REALLY bad day and neither of us wanted to tell her it broke. So I grabbed some wood glue from the garage, taped it up (cause I have no clamps) and hid it in my room to dry. I'm about to go put it back and my mom will never know (or at least won't notice until she feels like looking closely at it and sees the seam) So thanks!
I’ve always liked the contrast between large scale and small scale projects, large scale there’s more work to do, but in a sense there is more room for error, if you mess up, but have lots of detail, the mess up is a lot less noticeable, small scale projects let you focus all the detail to a tiny spot, you can’t really mess up without it being inevitably more noticeable, but if you get a flawless finished project, the effort stands out a lot more, and I live how this channel does both.
Great video Peter, and excellent choice of book, Name of the Wind is one of my all time favorite books, although as a series it's a bit of a letdown because the third book is taking forever to be written/released.

I suggest a laboratory balance rather than a kitchen scale, they’re more expensive but generally more accurate.

Do you use clear molds? Bc my colored molds dont cure correctly. But my clear ones do.

Normally resins that are measured by weight you mesure part A and part B individually to reduce the stress induced in doing exactly what you did lol
