Very true. If you're often preoccupied, you do not mostly notice others.

Now it’s 12 after this event and it is still fascinating! I’ve been working with my clients on their EQ for years with great results. Emotional Intelligence is worth developing. And unlike with IQ we can change a lot.

As a person with Asperger's Syndrome, I have had to learn to converse with others "from scratch." One of the things I learned was that others were more happy to be with me if I asked them questions and focused on their answers. All the while listening, I think of more questions to ask and so on. Basic, I know, but this is essentially what this gentleman is saying.

I watched this talk with great interest. I agree with everything Dr. Daniel Goleman said. However I am disappointed that Dr. Goleman never once mentioned extending the compassion to non-human sentient beings who suffer tremendously at the hands of humans. For example, Dr. Goleman spoke about making compassionate choices when shopping and he gave an example of buying a T-shirt and it's effect on the ecology. I agree with what Dr. Goleman said and I would apply the exact same logic when purchasing animal products, particularly meat, egg and dairy. I encourage Dr. Goleman to expand his compassion to the non-human sentient beings and bring such examples into his future talks.

I agree with you. I worked in downtown Atlanta when I was 18 - 20 and would try to get to know the homeless people there, sometimes eating and smoking with them. I had 2 knives pulled on me by homeless people and one homeless guy tried to attack me during those 2 years, some of them were just crazy and dangerous.

People need to start directing these talks to the ones in power the ones at the top making life extremely hard to just survive let alone help another individual. I place this problem squarely in the lap of those who control wealth and power. They have no rules they break every rule they give us then here comes this bull about taking it up the ass with a smile. Not all of us are in positions to help anyone and that doesn't make it our fault either or that we are bad.I'm really tired of deceit

He is mistaken. High IQ is actually correlated with high levels of emotional sensitivity in most cases. The upside is compassion. The downside is that when that type of person experiences negative emotions they tend to be as much more intense as all the fun emotions. More likely the killer was just pathologically angry towards his victims.

In my book, empathy applies to eating habit too, the same way society increases their consumerism level they do with food and do it the worst way as possible. The animals are tortured, slaughtered and finally killed, so why we keep doing this even realizing that is wrong and we don’t need it to survive? Empathy?!!!!

The use of the word Machiavellian here misconstrues Machiavelli's ideas. They're far more reasonable and focused on the truly pragmatic than the ideology of a sociopath.

Alexander Colon the word Machiavellian is referred to as a person capable of doing anything to reach its goal, suppressing any kind of empathy he/she is feeling.
A sociopath on the other hand is a person uncapable of feeling empathy.
The use he made of that word is proper for the context as he was making a list of socially unstable people.

"It has NEVER been proved to work" Geez, do you seriously know anything about Maslow or did you simply google him and come to your own asinine conclusions? As for people going against the pyramid structure, he also explains through his work why this occurs also, that value systems can take precedent in the mind and thusly change the structure somewhat. Your point however is moot as we are not discussing survival nor glory but the simple action of helping another.

  • @notimelikethepresent4739
    @notimelikethepresent4739 17 ปีที่แล้ว

Lol, this is news to this psychologist? Maslow's hierarchy of needs incorporates this, we first think or ourselves, safety, security, etc and then after all of that is taken care of we move to more philosophical concepts, such as helping others.
Some do go against this, but for the vast majority this is the way the mind works.

I love TED talks, but it is humorous to see how many thumbs down someone can get if a comment is issued that is in any way negative. Get a grip people, just because they are in TED doesn't mean they are the best or brightest, merely that they have an interesting take on something.
