    Love the series Lisa and enjoyed the style of your video where there is music at the beginning and end and professional commentary throughout. Thank you for making the tutorial videos. I live in Cairns, Queensland, Australia and there is no cold wax workshop available.

    I am taking my first cold wax/oil workshop.... resulting in watching a lot of videos. Thank you for your generous offerings. It’s fun just to watch. One concern I do have is seeing you use your fingers a lot for blending. As tempting as this is do you not have some concerns about the oil?

    • @LisaBBoardwine

      Katharine, so glad you are taking a workshop! Thank you for watching my videos, I hope they help you on your journey. As far as wearing gloves, I always tell my students-take care of your own health first, if you worry about having paint and solvent on your hands- by all means wear gloves. I have worn gloves from time to time, but I paint a lot with my fingers and you cannot get the same results with gloves -as with your fingers. I am constantly cleaning my hands as I work, although you may not see it in the filming. But do what you feel is best for you!

    I have really enjoyed watching your process Lisa. On the Marabu crayons since they are water soluable would Tim Holtz distress crayons also work?

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patricia, Thank you very much for watching my videos! The Marabu are water soluble and dry within 24 hrs, I have not used Tim Holtz but if they set up(dry) I am sure they would also work. After the Marabu set up, I cover them with a coat cold wax.

    Hi lisa! I just recently discovered cold wax thanks to your amazing videos! I’ve been using acrylics and inks for a few years and got interested In encaustics by chance, but felt it was I bit much with all the melting and such. I’ve just this weekend purchased some wax medium and gesso board and plan on jumping in! I’ve watched videos from several artists, but yours resonate the deepest!
    Do you have any advice on color palettes and mixing and blending? Do you use traditional color theory, or some variation, or does the cold wax technique you use tend to allow for more freedom, as it appears to me?
    Many thanks!

      Kevin, So glad you are giving the oil/cold wax a try! I use different palettes, just depending on what I am feeling on any given day. I definitely use color theory, but I do paint very intuitively and this is a very freeing medium! I enjoy color mixing and find a lot of joy in mixing paint! My thoughts are just paint! Then paint some more! Have fun!!

    I think I am going to have trouble! I liked your first one and I think I will be afraid to keep on going and change it. How long does it stay wet enough to move things around?

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Louise for tuning in! It will stay wet/tacky for a several days, depending on how temperatures and the air are in your studio, and how much wax you mix with the paint. Then you can always “Add another layer” to reactivate it!!😁

    do you need to varnish or protect cold wax and oil painting?

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Helen, you do not have to varnish these works, however, Gamblin makes a product called GamVar that comes in Gloss, Satin and Matte finishes if you decide you want to add a varnish. or you can go over the dry painting with a coat of clear cold wax, then lightly buff it as a varnish too. It is an individual decision as to whether or not you want to varnish these works. Thanks so much!!

    How do you clean your stencil?

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cookie,I don't always clean them between uses, (which I should do) but when I do clean them I usually wipe them with a with a wet one, or gamsol on a paper towel.

    Beautiful! Curious as to how you finish your edges after you remove the blue tape?

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nancy, I like the edges left natural. I have sometimes covered them with a clear coat of cold wax, or you can gesso them and paint them, stain them or continue the painting around the sides. So many ways to treat the sides!Thank you for watching !!

    Are you painting on a canvas? Birch panel? Also, how do you “ finish” a cold wax and oil painting? Can you varnish it as usual?

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tara, I usually paint on cradled hardboard or birch panels, covered with gesso. Since you are building each layer of paint with oil paint mixed with cold wax, there is no need to varnish a finished painting, however you can "varnish" with a layer of clear cold wax after the piece is dry. Gamsol also makes a product called GamVar -if you want a shinier finish.
