- We finish the repair on maybe the most common problem on the interior of the BMW Z3, the sagging glove box. Please watch until the end for some important lessons learned that will save you some time and hassle.

UPDATE: The bracket I used disappeared off the internet. This one is similar price, 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon, has similar comments to the one I bought:

You were absolutely right in your conclusion, it took me 5 minutes to fix the sag, I just removed the 4 phillips that hold the cover that houses the crush plate, 2 more phillips that hold the hinge which dropped the lower attached rectangular knob and then I pried it open with an plastic prying instrument (don't like to scratch or break stuff if I can avoid it), that exposed the heavy crush plate, 4 phillips removed that one and Voila! sag gone, still I pushed the existing bar with my hands upward to try and bend it back straighter, put it back together and no sag. I will come back next week and install the reinforcement plate I bought in case I want to put something a little heavy ever in the glove box, don't want it sagging then, but for my outing tomorrow, it looks great!

Please try removing the crash plate and tightening all the screws first before you dismantle everything!! You might save yourself a ton of work!

Thank you! Try taking out the plate first from the glovebox door, and tighten all the screws you have access to first- this may solve your problem and save you some hassle- if not, buy the bracket.

I've now owned my Z3 for 20 years and the glove box is still in as new condition aka not sagging. My wife on the other hand not so lucky. So what is the root cause of a sagging glove box? Weight and heat would be my guess.
The removal of that armor plate looks like a good place to start, that will certainly lighten the load. How much do you think that submarine plate weighs?
The first thing I did when I bought my car was to remove the BMW owners book from the glove-box, that thing alone probably weighs close to 5 lbs. Not knowing anything about sagging glove boxes years ago removing that book might have saved me an afternoon down the road. Anyways looks like you got her fixed, carry on...
Just went to the garage to find it and weigh it. Couldn't find it! Damn garage. Guessing 4-5 pounds. About the same as the book! The crash plate was added to comply with our Federal regulations. The bracket to support the box was left unchanged- too much weight for the bracket basically.
I weighed the submarine plate. It is 2.0 lbs.

Couple years. It is fun to drive but this interior is a nightmare to do anything and just too uncomfortable to live with compared to the M3

@@MomentofZed yesterday I did all new wheel bearings and struts on my M3. Piece of cake.!Today I only had to do this glove box fix and diff fluid change on the Z. I wouldn’t wish this glove box fix on my worst enemy. I gave up trying to drop glove box completely. Maybe because it’s been sagging so long….. nothing lines up

I fixed my sagging by taking out the 2.0 lb submarine plate in the glove box door. Its four screws and the latch mechanism. My plate just fell out because the screws were all broken. It's amazing how heavy that makes the door which causes the sagging, the door is light now. I bent the sagging part back into position and tightened all the associated screws to it. No more sagging box and took about 20 minutes to do. I did not take pics along the way, wish I had now, but this is pretty well documented on the forums and videos out there. I posted a short video on the removal of submarine plate in the BMW Z3 group on facebook. Depending on how bad your original sagging plate I would try this first as you don't have to take the box out and risk collateral damage to the box, vent ducting, etc. putting in the reinforcement plate.
You're right on and that is my goto when asked. That should fix 90% of any issues without risking more damage.
Bro, thanks again for all you do! But I wanna ask, is there a better way? I don't honestly want to take the crashplate out, it's kinda there for a reason. Debatable if that's a good reason or not but lol
I'm thinking there's gotta be a way to just possibly re-enforce it somehow that you might have seen?
Check out part one. There is a reinforcement. But if your passenger wears a seat belt the plate is superfluous.
@@MomentofZed My reasoning behind it is more on the side of just trying to keep the car as original as possible. My passenger always wears their seat belts bc I'm not tolerating that dashboard light or any possible dinging noise from Alexa 🤣

Did you happen to see a fuse box in there when you had the glove box out?
Can't remember seeing one. But it was a while ago.
@@MomentofZed thanks for replying. I’m trying to track down all fuses and relay locations and heard there might be some behind there but don’t want to take it all apart yet.
@@z-man7883 ill try to double check for you. That project was somewhat of a struggle so was only focused on not breaking anything else 😄
That crash plate at the start of the video didn't look very safe! Great video!

Why didn't you show how you connected the straps at the top. That's my situation; and I don't to disassemble the whole thing. The Bentley guide is useless for this; and the metal clips don't want to fit on the plastic parts of the strap. Any thoughts?
Here's what I would do:
1. Remove the anti-submarine crash plate if you haven't already (WITHOUT removing the glovebox from the car)
2. Lower the glovebox enclosure without removing it (see my suggestion at the end of this video).

@@MomentofZed Well, that seems more complicated than it should be. The issue is how they connect at the top not the bottom; but I'll try it. My next issue is the burned out bulbs behind the fan speed and the temp. selector. Looks like taking out the radio, undoing the screws on either side and pushing the tabs on the top flange should do it. Bulbs are$13 bucks each. Yikes! Have you ever done this? Maybe I should film it and send it to you.
@@tonerapture2717 I have to do it soon- not for burnt out bulbs, but for a sticky temp selector. I was going to wait to do that along with sending the radio out for repairs (potentially). You definitely have to remove the radio, let me look into the rest. Bulbs are expensive; the side marker bulbs (super tiny) were $5 each, replaced mine when I tried to do the gasket for the middle brake light.
And now for your next project might I suggest you replaced the original sound system, if you haven't already.
Don- I have to replace the (commonly) broken sub-woofer, that will be a video. Believe it or not, I know it doesn't have Blu-tooth, etc. I know it doesn't sound great, but I may repair and keep the original head unit. I like the way it looks, the controls are logical and I don't have to take my eyes off the road to use them. Plus, I still own CDs! We'll see... Thanks for watching!
@@MomentofZed I can relate to old school approach. However, after doing the whole works in stages, the biggest improvement was replacing the floor well speakers with Kicker DSC50s. Of course, it was easier with the glove box removed but I'd do that again without hesitation.
I love the way it turned out, incredible sound. I put about $400 into the new system. Replaced the HK power amp too. I pulled the ported sub-woofer and replaced it with a set of Pyle mid bass speakers.
@@idahoflyfishingadventures5244 Sounds like a reasonable project. I'm not really against any of that- certainly I'm not against new speakers- that's invisible anyways.
@@MomentofZed good luck playing CD's with that suspension. The changer in my trunk goes bonkers over even a small bump. It's pretty useless. What I did was buy an $8 cassette adapter so now I can play my ipod endlessly or play music from my iphone while it charges.

Think this only happens with the original butt z3s. The wide body seems to have an updated glovey!

Wide body? Is that the M Roadster version?
