Hell Hole: Dangerous secret canyon in Oregon

  • Hell Hole is a secret spot in Oregon. This hidden canyon goes up to 200 feet deep, and only 20 feet wide. Hell Hole is hard to find and for good reason. The hole is very dangerous and should not be entered without helmets, first aid, climbing gear, etc. After a quick introduction I let the visuals do the talking for the rest of the video.

    This is why I like TH-cam. I can safely tag along without fear of falling or being trapped. I can sip my beer and watch you guys show me a place I know I'll never see in real life. Thank you for sharing... it was awesome.

      I agree, although I don't sip beer. I also like train trips. Been up and down the West Coast a dozen times and haven't gotten tired of it yet. Also been across the US from Florida to Alaska, and from the East Coast to California. Different vibes from these videos, but the idea is the same - staying safely home and enjoying someone else's trips.

      @MattCookOregon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks dude good to hear from you. I love how lightweight and small the spark is, also less to risk than a $1000+ drone. Quality is acceptable, could be better. I really think having something that does 60fps would be nice with all the motion drones do. So ya if I had to get one now I may go with the mavic air. I would recommend spark as a first drone to people for sure though. I have been rocking the chest strap with a go pro hero7 black lately, absolutely love it. I tried out the 4k60fps on this trip, ended up using the batteries too quick with 3 hours of endless bushwacking and missed out on a lot of the climbing footage haha.

    Not trying to be a troll or anything, but what is so dangerous about it? It looks like a larger version of the Great Channels of Virginia, which I hiked back in I believe 2013. I have a video of it.
    Is the Hell Hole dangerous because of potential rock slides or just the remoteness of the area? Maybe the camera just doesnt pick up on how steep it really is... Regardless, it really is a beautiful place that you filmed there. Thanks for sharing.

    • @MattCookOregon
      @MattCookOregon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am basically trying to respect what others have done when posting about this place. A few rescue missions took place here in recent years. The main danger is constant falling rocks. The area is also very remote and off trail. There were 3 parts that needed ropes. I am sure some 'tough guys' did it without ropes, some of them did not make it out though.

    • @whatnot987
      @whatnot987 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I appreciate you not giving directions to this very special place. I've been doing my part to keep it as little known as possible, but that of course didn't prevent someone before me sullying the place by leaving their plastic water bottle behind. Seriously, folks. If you go, please try not to leave any evidence.

      Thanks. I have a bit of guilt covering this over the big well known landmarks I usually do videos on. Off the path places like this are how I usually spend my time when not doing videos. I like to at least show a bit of the rougher stuff as that is more me. On our way in there was a trail of pieces of paper every 10 feet to mark someone's path. Always garbage out there what can ya do but pick it up.

      @@MattCookOregon Yep. Pretty much. Hoping to make it up there again soon. This week would be perfect to escape the heat and I just bought a DJI drone and haven't really flown it yet other than to get used to the controls but finding someone who's available (and willing) has always been a bit of a challenge. I guess we'll see. Please, keep posting!

      @@jordoneaton7083 Thanks I got a big documentary coming this friday on lighthouses. This place was rough for droning. Definitely crashed my dji spark on the walls, lost control with no gps. What drone did you get? I just finally upgraded from the spark to air2s.

      @@MattCookOregon I'd heard a lot if great things about the Air2S so that's also what I went with. I almost went with the Pro 2 or the Zoom but I've seen so many people having problems with some of the features. The 1 inch CMOS sensor really sold me on it as it'll be used mostly for videography.,

      @@jordoneaton7083 Awesome. I love air2s so far. I am not the biggest droner. It is basically a 400 foot tripod to me. So all I have cared to learn is how to shoot clean video. I just took the commercial drone test this year so learned a lot from that.

    I like your videos but this disappointed me. If it’s dangerous and should be a secret then why did you go?

    • @MattCookOregon
      @MattCookOregon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because I live for adventure. OPB did a show on it. Not sure why a business gets away with it and I don't.

      @@MattCookOregon And I totally appreciate that. I am realizing that my comment seemed very rude and I should have explained what I meant more. I think it is awesome that you went and found it but my disappointment was the fact that the location was not shared. I figure if you went and justified making a video than it should be an encouraged trip to the rest of us fellow adventurers. Kudos to you and your adventurous attitude though. Keep it up with the sweet content that really showcases our state well! I wish more people made videos like you.

      @@reidmkerr It is a reasonable question to ask. Locations can be looked up pretty easily. I don't see sharing directions as an essential part of every video. Some adventures I would not recommend to most viewers, Devil's staircase, North sister, camping in 0 degrees. The goal isn't always to be a guide, but to entertain in a variety of ways.
