On a hot summer day you can explore this feature in comfort. Some parts of the crack are pretty deep and provide a natural cooling effect. It was fun walking south to see where the crack ended.
@@aCarrotsSoul Yep 7 and 8 were special. Exploring the worlds was so exciting. So when making outdoor exploration videos it only made sense to use them.
Very kind thank you. I guess I need to put myself out there in order to do something like that. There are a lot of things I don't like about youtube, but it seems to be the only place I can get people to watch the videos so I stay here. At the moment I don't put too much effort into all of this. I just make a video when I feel inspired. A lot of hours go in but it goes by in a flash with the creative fun that it is to me.
Matt, I consider your videos to be on the level of Nick Zentner's, among other geology type videos. You are a reliable source of geology facts without being overwhelming, or pandering to the less intelligent. When looking for videos about Oregon Geology I look through your content first!
@@MattCookOregon I am a native Oregonian, and many of the places you've covered are familiar to me. I have often wondered about the geology of Oregon. Never did take geology in university, but I still want to. Your videos sure scratch that itch.
I've never seen it from the air nor have I gone North. Another great video of a place I've been giving me more insight on the site. Couple good geocaches in the area also.
So happy to see another Matt.Cook.Oregon video. As a small land owner in Christmas Valley, I visited with a many generation local that mentioned Crater lake water showing up near Ana reservoir. That just came to mind as you mention the ash from Crater lake being at the floor of Crack in the ground. The water is believed to travel in underground lava tubes etc. Maybe that fact or myth would worthy of a video someday?
I saw some real cheap land in Christmas valley for sale recently, man that was tempting. Seems pretty far for Crater lake water to show up but ya never know. There is definitely some underground water that farms tap into at Christmas valley. I never covered anything Crater lake on video. Party cause no dogs, and then so many others have already covered it I dont see the need to.
Nice vid!! Got a camping spot near there we've been camping on for over 20 years. Heard from a couple local old timers that there is a crystal geode cave somewhere in that crack in the ground.
@@MattCookOregon Sometimes ya just have to stick with what you know, but also that's what most of us enjoy about your videos. Your touch so to say. Cheers!
If you go with your kids during mid-late summer, show them beforehand what stinging nettles look like (sort of like mint, with pretty flowers at times). There are some in and in shady places around the crack. Touching those things can be very painful for quite a while. Nice video overview, and definitely an interesting place to explore, plus a little hike that gives you a nice shot of cool air on hot desert days.
Good idea. Lots of dangers like rattlers too. For some reason I ignored safety in this video which is unusual for me. Guess I don't want to cover the same things every video.
@@MattCookOregon Rattlers were my #1 Concern for Kody. I would much prefer I got bit then he, so I really lead and sheltered him, keeping him close. We really took our time there, much enjoyed, and the town as well.
Great video Matt! Your production is always very inspiring. I have always enjoyed the crack in the ground. I also like seeing all the sage on the lava flow! Nice time to visit, the area looked very green for central Oregon on this trip. Really enjoyed this one!
That is great to hear thank you. I am not often inspired with videos or ideas. I keep wanting to change it up but somehow I get excited enough to do another.
Another stellar video, I love your passion and the geology nerdery. I'd love more deep dives around the Mt hood/Hood river area (I live up here and fly R/C and snowboard/hike/bike) Would love to share some hidden spots
I am sure you don't want me covering your hidden spots! I don't hang around hood too much but keep meaning to do something there as it would be popular.
Wonderful video! You are right - the surrounding area is also interesting and beautiful. My very favorite spot is out and across the graben/sink to the east of the crack: you can see how the whole area collapsed into a slight “bowl”… Thanks for posting this peaceful depiction of my backyard!
Nice work Matt. I enjoyed visiting Crack in the Ground more than I expected...photos and videos I had seen did not do justice to how impressive this feature is. Appreciate learning the geological origins. Nice drone work too. I never realized the crack went all the way up to that lava flow.
Thank you. We almost connected on this one. One of these days we just gotta go for it and see what happens. Resulting in some Frankenstein video that may actually be cool.
