    Pogacar looks much wiser then at the TDF. When Jonas attacked he stayed in this wheel and didn't do any work and when everything came together he attacked when Jonas tried to recover from his attack. Very strong performance today but it will be interesting to see how he will do at stage 7 when the final climb is much longer than today.

    I am Slovenian .. living here in small town Mengeš,near some 15km to Roglič and 8 km to Pogačar .. yeah Slovenia is small 20.000 km2 with 2.1 mil people living here. And when Pogacar is running here on the local hill .. my wife with the electric bike said I had no chance :) - of course. But fortunately for Slovenia Pogacar is pure talent, he could be one of the goats. On other hand Roglic living on other side of the hill .. suffer a lot in his life, sacrifice everything what is connected in his body for results. Shows us a poor battle mind against body pain. Winning Olympic Gold last year . Whenever I bike there I feel so proud.

      It's a hangover from Le Tour 2020, when Pog would literally run out of domestiques and nuke the field solo because everyone underestimated him. It's a bit of a different story these days, as the team is obviously more tactical, in this case making the call to not burn the whole team for the bonus seconds to then better set up Großschartner and Pog for the final assault.

    Pog is racing much smarter and being patient. JV was able to isolate him at the TdF last year. When it’s 1v1 or team vs team, Pog will come out ahead because he’s the difference maker

    • @Rahbekkk
      @Rahbekkk ปีที่แล้ว

      Pog is doing the exact same thing as last year tho. Won Tirreno with around two minutes to Vingegaard, won PN this year with around 2 minutes. Pogacar is peaking for the Ardennes classics. Vingegaard pacing his form to peak at TdF. But I do hope to see a full UAE squad at the tour this year. Pog was severely crippled by his team being decimated by covid last year.

    I think that Jonas and Jumbo hopefully learned a valuable lesson today. The stage today is almost tailor made for Pogacar's strengths, and it would always have been difficult not to lose any time here. It looked to me that he was over confident and should never have attacked early on climb, and should just have paced the climb to the top, instead of trying to close the gap once it was there. Oh well, this is now over. The rest of the race is just to determine the 2nd and 3rd podium spots.

  • @doctornrsfnly
    @doctornrsfnly ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This race shows how the UAE tactical decision making has inproved since the TdF and how much TP himself has matured and become a more canny racer..
    The smart tactical move to focus on intermediate bonus seconds to lessen the Impact JV's monster TTT squad powered by 2 TT World champs.
    The inclusion of Much stronger mountain domestiques (Bjerg, Grosschartner) to pace and Pogacar's improved discipline to use them for the entire stage and STILL pick up bonus seconds where he can.
    Was especially impressed by Pogacar NOT attacking with Jonas even though he clearly had the lega to do so. He realised that if he waited, he could attack later with better results and win by a bigger margin.
    And then when he snapped to Gaudu's wheel without giving Vingegaard any draft whatsoever and then measured his effort to ensure max bonus seconds.
    Pogacar KNOWS that he is the best rider in the race as he was in the TdF (next to an extra-terrestrial WvA)
    Tadej got smoked in the TdF because he was not the best RACER, and he has improved on his patience, his racing discipline and his tactical decision making...
    And he is still stupid fast especially uphill..
    All this without an altitude camp!

    I personally don't really think we should focus on this climb too much. It was just a bit more than 6k and these type of climbs suit Pogacar really well. He's more explosive and I think he can hold bigger power for shorter in comparison to Vingegaard. I think when there's a longer, more steady climb at a slower pace Vingegaard is the better climber.
    Also I think Jonas knew this was his first chance since the tour to show his form and was a bit in panic when Pogacar went for the bonus seconds (I'm referring to Jumbo Visma's documentary where they say Jonas was really sensitive and insecure).
    Either way, great ride from Pogacar but I think we will have to wait untill there's a stage with a longer climb, a better team for Jonas who can help to counter Pogacar's attacks and when Jonas is a bit more calm.
    Looking forward to stages 7 and 8 though, should be nice!

    It’s early days and this is race is just a tune up (and wake up call) for all the teams. Today UAE had an excellent plan which was to put extreme pressure on all teams (especially TJV) starting long before the bonus sec climb and not letting anybody least of all Jonas get any rest physically or mentally and almost certainly to not be fully fueled with calories.
    That last climb showed Pog as a great tactician taking the opportunities presented by the attacks of Micheal and David to test the real situation of every GC rider and then to ride off into the distance.
    A huge psychological blow.

    I think Pog is a bit angry about the Tour. This is a bit of payback. Still early doors so no worries for all. Pog seems to not be able to stop himself but he has to ride tactically better than last year. Pog needs to stop the wasting energy. I think he's on too good form, too often. He needs to chill a bit. I'm sure Jumbo will be ready. Jonas is in quite good condition; he's got loads of time to get it together. As far as Matthews not challenging Pog in the sprint, they say Pog and Matthews train together in the Monaco and are pretty good Buddies. As far as form, then VDP shows how form can come back in a pretty short time. All to play for at the Tour :)

    GC for this race is over but I wouldn't read this stage as indicative of what will happen in the TdF.
    I think Jonas cracked because something went amiss -- hunger, dehydration, or some sort of bug. It was a 7km climb, average 7%, and max 9%. Even if he cannot close the gap to Pogacar, he is not going to be overtaken by three next-level GC riders unless something very unusual went wrong on that day.

    • @MDP1702
      @MDP1702 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonas just isn't good at this short of climbs/stages, too short and too "easy" regarding climbs. Moreover Pog is consistent throughout the year, but Vingegaard seems to need to peak more (likely to do with unsustainable low weight).

    • @rossmurray6849
      @rossmurray6849 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MDP1702 It's not poor form. A week ago Jonas crushed Rohan Dennis in an ITT and a long way back to third. There's no explanation for Mader and others catching and passing on a climb that short and easy. It was just one inexplicably bad day and I remain very confident he'll finish in the top two of the TdF.

    • @MDP1702
      @MDP1702 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rossmurray6849 That doesn't necessarily mean Jonas is good, it also can mean that Dennis just isn't great either, which isn't impossible this being his last year and early season. And the opposition in Gran Camino was really weak.
      Jonas has shown weakness vs other climbers in the past when he isn't great/at tour shape. He was only 16th in Lombardia last year, also wasn't spectacular in Basque or Tirreno. He only really looks much better than the other climbers when he really peaks.
      Also he spend unnecessary energy in that first attack of his, likely already putting some nails in his legs and then he blew up trying to follow Pog. Without that first attack or trying everything to follow Pog and blowing up, he'd be with or in front of Mäder imo. Once you blow up, your're done and won't achieve the performance you'd have done just setting a regular pace.
      Lastly, short and easy climbs are actually the worst kind for Vingegaard.
      This doesn't say anything about what will happen at the TdF, we'll see a completely different Jonas then. Though personally I always have kept Pog as the favorite for this TdF unless Roglic goes too.

    • @rossmurray6849
      @rossmurray6849 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MDP1702 Yes, the opposition in Gran Camino was really weak, but as I said, it was, "a long way back to third." Dennis beat all of the rest by 24 seconds, then Jonas beat by him another 35 seconds, in a short (18km) and flat ITT.

    • @MDP1702
      @MDP1702 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rossmurray6849 And again doesn't matter, it is the opposition that counts, for all we know top ITT riders would take another minute. The 3rd rider only once rode top 10 in an ITT higher than .1, so not exactly a good measuring stick, especially early in the season.

    To me Jonas looked ill. Something were wrong for sure because when he attacked with 4.3km he looked fine and was waiting for the counter from Pogacar. So Gaudu bridges and then attacks them both and I was expecting Jonas to follow along with Pog. Then when POGACAR bridges to Gaudu, something went BOOM with Jonas, like his lungs were filled with mucus. His breathing look laboured as Pog just flew away from him. Also, look at Jonas after he crosses the line, he looked DEAD. No way he could give up that much time on that 7km single digit climb.

    destroy:
    - end the existence of (something) by damaging or attacking it
    - ruin (someone) emotionally or spiritually
    - defeat (someone) utterly
    - kill (a sick, savage, or unwanted animal) by humane means
    Nothing from the above happened, Pogacar won a stage race by a margin to Vingegaard. Vingegaard as a pro is very well alive, he did not get ruined, did not lose utterly (completely and without qualification; absolutely), and he got not killed.
