No. Have you never studied the history of skateboarding? Probably not since it's cool to be ignorant now a days. Anyway, a "varial" was originally a trick done on vert and it was essentially a shove it (not really popped at first, infact Tony Hawk even says in an interview that before Rodney Mullen did flat ground ollies, "ollies" on vert were more like a scooping of the tail rather than a pop) Anyway, the varial was a shove it where you caught the board with your hand and put it back under your feet. Not sure of the exact point when varial kickflips became the standard name but kickflip to indys were a popular vert trick in the early 90's so I'm guessing at some point some one combined the original varial with kickflip to indy and then eventually people did them on the street without a grab. Hope that answers your question.

It was one of the first tricks I learned when I was young that made me feel accomplished. Like my first step into manhood or something xD It will always have a special place in my heart.

I hate this generation of skaters.. Were anything unoriginal thats done over and over again in competitions are the only "cool" tricks. Those and little 6 inch crooked grinds.. WOW that must take some serious balance! Back in the early 2000s, us old timers called that kiss the rail. Man, its just been invaded with the $100 Nike wearing douches that complain when they get their clothes dirty. Now creativity and skill has been replaced with 'steez'.. Go and watch the tilt mode skate video on youtube and you will have a different view. It's nothing like all the other vids where the bar tries to get set higher and higher. But even though there having great fun making this skate video doesn't mean that the skating sucks. There is some sweet and big tricks without the tough guy crap so go and enjoy...

I think people hate on the varial kickflip because it's actually HARDER to do down stairs then a 360flip... And usually people focus on 360flips so when someone does a varial kickflip in a game of skate, they are illprepared and take a letter.... jajajaj theyre mad.

The mask is based off of the movie V for Vendetta, and the mask in that movie was based off the Spaniard Guy Fawkes.

I just learned varial heel and then varial flip today. Im 32 and Ive been skaying for 48 days and i think theyre cool. Anyone who does any flip over a gap or stairset is doing a cool trick, period.

I disagree. Everyone does tre flips and backside kickflips. Varials are unpredictable for me so I land primo sometimes. You can make that trick the shit man. With anything. Be unique. Instead of learnin tre flips learn to 360Hardflip or 360 Inwardheel

I'll always love the varial just because when I was young, maybe 10-11, I learned the kickflip and varial the same day and they were the only flip tricks i could do for a long while. I quit skating for a long time and when i started again early this year I landed a varial and tre before landing a kickflip

I think this is to be taken light heartedly however I've never heard of this stigma and I'm 25 been skating since I was 14. Now I snowboard. Anyone reading this you must must must ensure that when skating , snowboarding whatever it is YOU enjoy, you keep it that way. I’m amazed the joke went over so many people’s heads after the half dozen or so Guy Fawkes (a historically significant person) references being mistaken as the basis for the Jim Carrey comedy The Mask (which was clearly done purposely for comedic effect).

Dude for real man. Lots of skaters are like that now days. I try to be myself as a skater. I don't wear typical skater clothes and I geek out my board with my own designs on he bottom. Heck yesterday, I just got back from the gym and went straight to the skate park with my dorky exercise gear on. Skating is meant to be fun and showing YOUR OWN creativity.

I can attest to this stigma from wayyyy back in the early 90s. I learned kickflip, then varial flip, then never would do them and only as a "joke". Why? Was never really explained to me other than it's the combination of the 2 quintessential easy tricks a beginner may learn Pop shuv it and kickflip 🤷♂️

Absolutely hilarious, and even more so for people thinking this is serious.
This is a little unrelated to the video, but just something I thought of while thinking about "ugly tricks." I think the reason that people think that cool tricks are ugly or bad is because not enough people do them or practice them. If you only see a trick done by someone who's really bad at it, its gonna look bad. I hear some people say that bonelesses are ugly but I personally think they're really cool. The boneless kind of falls in that category where it's a really cool trick but it's swarmed by beginners who don't know how to do it well and then it looke ugly. Double flips is kidna the same. The main time you see people trying them is when they're trying to look good but in reality have no idea how to do them.
Honestly, I learned kickflips, then tried to learn 360 flips. Skipped varial kickflips. I learned switch kickflips. Never bothered with varial kickflips. Ever. That's just how it is. I still don't know what a pressure flip is.
Its when you get the board to flip using the foot you pop with by applying pressure to a specific part of the tail. Look them up. They're neat and fun to do! :)
