      It's really amazing how the human body can metabolize huge amounts of alcohol if it gets used to it. I saw a medical case of a guy who would get up every morning and drink a full 700ml bottle of whiskey before noon and he did this for years. He was a massive alcoholic with a hardly functional liver and he couldnt survive at that point without alcohol
      But also, I think a lot of people are high on something throughout the day, we just dont really think about the subtle drugs we use regularly as the same thing as the hard drugs that we dont. Caffeine, nicotine, ethanol, cannabanoids. Not to mention that we have an enless supply of virtual drugs these days, television has a very drug-like effect on the mind, and you can stop it whenever you want with no come down period at all, its very convenient way to take your mind off things

      They all drank beer or "ale" with alcohol . The water supply was the Thames and it was a sewer.

    • @nikiTricoteuse
      @nikiTricoteuse 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They all, even the children, drank "small beer" which from memory was about 2٪ alcohol. Just enough alcohol to make it safe to drink. The water was not safe and could literally be deadly. It carried typhoid fever, cholera and Hepatitis A or E and all sorts of other lovely things.

    Begs the question if that's where the expression "they've been on the sauce", referring to someone who's been drinking, came from. 😁

      Raises the question. Using 'begs the question' here is ignorant

    • @nikiTricoteuse
      @nikiTricoteuse ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FigaroHey Speak for yourself Figaro. Perhaps it depends on which country you live in. Apart from the fact l was making a joke, I've never heard anyone use "raises the question" and, it's also incredibly rude to imply someone is ignorant.

      They are right though. ‘Begging the question’ refers to rhetoric - specifically it means a circular argument.
      I think you meant “It poses the question.”

    • @nikiTricoteuse
      @nikiTricoteuse 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Knappa22 Perhaps that depends on where you're from. I stand by my original usage as being correct. As do several dictionaries.
      Definitions from Oxford Languages; Beg the question
      1. (of a fact or action) raise a point that has not been dealt with; invite an obvious question. "some definitions of mental illness beg the question of what constitutes normal behaviour"
      2. assume the truth of an argument or proposition to be proved, without arguing it.
      Merriam-Webster; Begging the question means "to elicit a specific question as a reaction or response," and can often be replaced with "a question that begs to be answered." However, a lesser used and more formal definition is "to ignore a question under the assumption it has already been answered."

    It would have been nice to know more about that special door, how did it work? It is only shown in the condition where the bumps are raised, what did it look like when they were not raised? How was the device activated, for example was it based on a manual switch that the *special occupant* had to activate, or more of a pressure plate or something similar that activated automatically? It's easy to imagine some toff forgetting to manually activate a switch and being walked in on by a servant, but the servant that is blamed, that would be unfortunate.

    • @resnonverba137
      @resnonverba137 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a studded door.

    • @breerisk3590
      @breerisk3590 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think there would have been any mechanism that raised and retraced the bumps, It could have been something they hung on the door or it may have been a permanent structure.

    • @nikiTricoteuse
      @nikiTricoteuse 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree. That said, I don't think the bumps did change but acted as a sort of braille to show that behind that door was one of the rooms occupied by a member of the household. Possibly the number and placement of the bumps indicated which room it was.

    • @theeutecticpoint
      @theeutecticpoint 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nikiTricoteuse Oh, they way they say "there IS someone on the other side.." makes it sound like it was an active device, when there is someone: the bumps are raised, when there isn't someone: the bumps aren't raised. I suppose it should be "COULD BE someone on the other side..."? Pity, with as many unique gadgets as the Victorians came up with, a device that actively warned of a room being occupied could have been interesting.
      Although having a Braille-like door bump code does also sound interesting, with Braille having only recently being invented.

    • @nikiTricoteuse
      @nikiTricoteuse 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theeutecticpoint Totally agree that it sounded as though there was some way of controlling the bumps and would love to have had a better look at it and a proper explanation. Sadly, I suspect not everyone is as interested in the actual workings of things as we are. Wasn't meaning that it WAS actual braille just that perhaps the placement and number of the bumps varied according to which door it was. I imagine that most of the servants would not have been able to actually read braille even if it had already existed when the door was fashioned. 🙂
